Abstract:Hodgkin's and Reed-Sternberg (H-RS) cells are morphological hallmarks of Hodgkin's disease (HD). So far, several characteristics frequently seen in H-RS cells from different origins have been described, such as the high expression of Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1), the elevation of NF-kB activity, and the aberrant expression of molecules such as CD15, CD30, and CD99. Despite extensive studies on the nature of H-RS cells, the molecular mechanism by which H-RS cells are generated remained elusive. Recently, the forced down-regulation of CD99 was reported to induce typical H-RS phenotypes in vitro in a B cell line. Furthermore, it was revealed that LMP1 markedly reduces the CD99 expression at the transcriptional level. Since the presence of LMP1 is known to be associated with the H-RS cell formation, the data provide a possibility of linkage between LMP1 and HD via CD99, thus suggesting that, at least in part, the loss of CD99 may play a critical role in the pathogenic sequence to the formation of H-RS cells in HD. In this review, the role of CD99 in the generation of H-RS cells and its molecular mechanism will be suggested.

Abstract:Especially in the context of current greenhouse effect and energy shortage, the development of various catalysts to catalyze CO2 resource utilization is an attractive field. Recently, the yolk-shell catalyst solves the problems of coking and sintering and further provides confinement effects as well as improved stability. In this mini-review, the development status of carbon, silicon-based yolk-shell structured catalysts for hydrogenation of CO2 to formate/formic acid, and CO2 dry reforming of methane are introduced. The latest research progress of catalysts and active metals commonly used in these reactions is reviewed, as well as how to provide superior performance in these reactions. In addition, the properties of customized yolk-shell structure and the effect of pore size change on CO2 hydrogenation and dry reforming reaction will be briefly described. Furthermore, the effect of space restriction and how to enhance the performance of the yolk-shell structure nanoreactor are also discussed. We firmly believe that this mini-review will stimulate more research in the catalysis community, especially to advance the design of yolk-shell catalytic materials, and ultimately achieve sustainable development of the carbon cycle.

Abstract:Electrochemically converting CO2 to value‐added fuels over metal nanomaterials has great potential due to their intrinsically‐high reactivity, and superb physiochemical, and structural stabilities. It is thus quite imperative to deeply understand the crystal orientation, surface structure, surface crystallography, surface modification, and many associated effects benefiting from the specific metal nanostructures, as well as, the relationships of specific nanostructure‐property‐activities. Electrochemically converting CO2 (CO2 reduction reaction(CO2RR)) to value‐added fuels is an advanced technology to effectively alleviate global warming and the energy crisis. However, thermodynamically high energy barriers, sluggish reaction kinetics, and inadequate CO2 conversion rate as well as poor selectivity of target products and rapid materials degradation severely limit its further large‐scale application, which highlights the importance of high‐performance electrocatalysts. Metal nanomaterials, due to their intrinsically high but still insufficient reactivity, selectivity, and stability, have been brought to the forefront and have lead to many reviews from various points of view. However, reviews which comprehensively unravel the importance and excellence of specific metal nanostructures and their associated properties for CO2RR are quite limited. To bridge this gap, various specific monometal and bimetal nanostructures are summarized, with an emphasis on the deep understanding of crystal orientation, surface structure, surface crystallography, surface modification, and many associated effects benefiting from the constructed specific metal nanostructures as well as the intrinsic relationships of specific metal nanostructure‐property‐CO2RR activities. Finally, the challenges and the perspectives to advance CO2RR are proposed to pay particularly more attention to architecture evolution during CO2RR with in situ/operando techniques, high‐throughput theoretical computations, and facile synthetic strategies with high yield and production for scale‐up applications.

Abstract:The balance of the carbon cycle is destroyed by the increasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the Earth's atmosphere, which limits the sustainable development of human beings. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 under ambient conditions is an effective method to solve this issue by converting CO2 to value-added chemicals or fuels. In recent years, metal nanoclusters (NCs) and single atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in electrochemical energy conversion. In this review, we mainly focus on the electrocatalytic properties of noble metal and transition metal catalysts at a sub-nanometer or single-atom scale, with special attention paid to their catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the catalytic mechanism towards different products. Their main advantages and challenges are also highlighted. The purpose of this review is to give a comprehensive understanding and inspire further exploration of more effective catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 provides a sustainable way to mitigate CO2 emissions, as well as store intermittent electrical energy into chemicals. However, its slow kinetics and the lack of ability to control the products of the reaction inhibit its industrial applications. In addition, the immature mechanistic understanding of the reduction process makes it difficult to develop a selective, scalable, and stable electrocatalyst. Carbon-based materials are widely considered as a stable and abundant alternative to metals for catalyzing some of the key electrochemical reactions, including the CO2 reduction reaction. In this context, recent research advances in the development of heterogeneous nanostructured carbon-based catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 are summarized. The leading factors for consideration in carbon-based catalyst research are discussed by analyzing the main challenges faced by electrochemical reduction of CO2 . Then the emerging metal-free doped carbon and aromatic N-heterocycle catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 with an emphasis on the formation of multicarbon hydrocarbons and oxygenates are discussed. Following that, the recent progress in metal-nitrogen-carbon structures as an extension of carbon-based catalysts is scrutinized. Finally, an outlook for the future development of catalysts as well as the whole electrochemical system for CO2 reduction is provided.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are an important environmental issue that causes greenhouse and climate change effects on the earth. Nowadays, CO2 has various conversion methods to be a potential carbon resource, such as photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photo-electrocatalytic. CO2 conversion into value-added products has many advantages, including facile control of the reaction rate by adjusting the applied voltage and minimal environmental pollution. The development of efficient electrocatalysts and improving their viability with appropriate reactor designs is essential for the commercialization of this environmentally friendly method. In addition, microbial electrosynthesis which utilizes an electroactive bio-film electrode as a catalyst can be considered as another option to reduce CO2. This review highlights the methods which can contribute to the increase in efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) processes through electrode structure with the introduction of various electrolytes such as ionic liquid, sulfate, and bicarbonate electrolytes, with the control of pH and with the control of the operating pressure and temperature of the electrolyzer. It also presents the research status, a fundamental understanding of carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanisms, the development of electrochemical CO2R technologies, and challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract:The use of fossil fuels leads to significant CO2 emissions, thus highlighting the importance for investigating the utilization of CO2 for generating high-value chemical products toward achieving the dual-carbon goal. CO2 can be efficiently used in synthesizing valuable organic compounds through C-C, C-O, C-H, and C-N bond construction, with reduction technologies effectively converting CO2 to organic carbon sources. Therefore, the research in developing environmentally friendly catalysts for efficient and renewable CO2 conversion holds great importance. New materials for catalytic conversion include zeolites, activated carbon, graphene, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), ionic liquids, semiconducting photocatalysts, single-atom catalysts (SACs), and dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). The proper research and use of these materials can aid in the quest to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. This Review focuses on the utilization of single-atom catalysts (SACs), ionic liquids (ILs), dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), and carbene-metal catalytic systems in CO2 conversion. The potential for new materials in catalyzing the conversion of CO2 is examined by analyzing various common chemical carbon sequestration methods, ultimately providing possible research directions for effective solutions to climate and environmental pollution problems. On the basis of the high reaction rate and high treatment efficiency of the catalyst for the catalytic conversion of CO2, the Review focuses on the simpler and more economical synthesis method of the catalyst itself and the wider application prospects.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to value-added products has attracted overwhelming attention considering its environmental significance and economic benefit. However, because of the kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of CO 2 , great challenge still remains on its efficient activation, which is well-accepted as an uphill reaction that requires substantial energy inputs. This mini-review summarizes the state-of-the-art CO 2 activation strategies, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and other emerging catalytic techniques, for instance, coupling photo with thermal field. Moreover, the advantages, disadvantages, and potential products are discussed. Furthermore, CO has many industrial applications, such as being an important feedstock in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Therefore, recent research progress and challenges in CO 2 catalytic conversion to CO are highlighted in this mini-review by comparing different techniques with an outlook on the development of catalysts.

Abstract:The increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration has caused many environmental issues. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been considered as a promising strategy to mitigate these challenges. The electrocatalysts with a low overpotential, high Faradaic efficiency, and excellent selectivity are of great significance for the CO2RR. Carbon-based materials including metal-free carbon catalysts and metal-based carbon catalysts have shown great potential in the CO2RR, owing to the tailorable porous structures, abundant natural resources, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. In this review, various carbon materials including graphene, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, porous carbon, and MOF-derived catalysts, etc., for the CO2RR have been summarized. Particularly, recent progress in terms of the mechanism and pathway of CO2 conversion has been comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are proposed.

Abstract:Processes for the conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals are highly desired as a result of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere and the subsequent elevating global temperature. However, CO2 is thermodynamically and kinetically inert to transformation and, therefore, many efforts were made in the last few decades. Reformation/hydrogenation of CO2 is widely used as a means to access valuable products such as acetic acids, CH4, CH3OH, and CO. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 using hetero- and homogeneous catalysts recently attracted much attention. In particular, molecular CO2 reduction catalysts were widely studied using transition-metal complexes modified with various ligands to understand the relationship between various catalytic properties and the coordination spheres above the metal centers. Concurrently, the coupling of CO2 with various electrophiles under homogeneous conditions is also considered an important approach for recycling CO2 as a renewable C-1 substrate in the chemical industry. This review summarizes some recent advances in the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals with particular focus on the metal-catalyzed reductive conversion and functionalization of CO2.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) powered by renewable energy is an attractive sustainable approach to mitigate CO2 emissions and to produce fuels or value-added chemicals. In order to tackle the challenges related to selectivity, activity, overpotential and durability, transition metal-based catalysts have been widely investigated in the last decades. In an effort to bridge the gap between the fields of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, this review aims to survey the main strategies explored for the rational design of a wide variety of different metal catalysts, ranging from molecular systems to single-atom and nanostructured catalysts. Transition metal complexes containing heme and non-heme ligands have been selected to discuss the recent advances in the understanding of the structure-function relationship in molecular homogeneous catalysis as well as to summarize the main approaches proposed for the heterogenization or confinement of molecular catalysts on conductive surfaces. The main strategies to minimize catalyst cost are also presented, leading to atomically dispersed molecular-like M-Nx moieties embedded on 2D conducting materials. The superior performances of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and the structural similarity with their molecular analogs, suggest that transition metal catalysts containing well-defined sites may be intrinsically more active and selective towards CO2 conversion than the bulk heterogeneous materials. Finally, design approaches for metal nanoparticles (NPs) based on size, shape, and support tuning are summarized and compared to novel strategies based on the interaction with surface-bonded organic molecules. The studies herein presented show that the basic principles in molecular catalysis and organometallic chemistry can be effectively used to design new efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The rapidly rising concentration of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the atmosphere as a result of human activity poses serious threats and alarming situations not only to humans but also to our environment. Within the context of this agenda, electrochemical CO 2 reduction to value-added chemicals is one of the most effective approaches to lowering environmental CO 2 concentrations. However, this approach requires highly robust electrocatalysts; therefore, in the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the demand for the synthesis and development of efficient electrocatalysts. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials, having high porosity, large surface area, stability, and chemical tunability, have been extensively studied as an emerging class of electrocatalysts for CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). In this article, we reviewed the fundamentals of CO 2 RR, including its mechanism and activity descriptors, and current developments in MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO 2 RR are described along with their underlying chemistry. Finally, we explore the current difficulties and potential future developments of MOFs for CO 2 RR. It is intended that this review will aid in the development of ever-more effective MOF-based materials for CO 2 abatement and raise awareness of the need for additional work to be done in order to explore MOFs' potential for tackling important environmental sustainability challenges. Particularly, ligand engineering in MOFs remains an important topic for developing a highly efficient CO 2 RR catalyst.

Abstract:The rapid increase of the CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere has resulted in numerous environmental issues, such as global warming, ocean acidification, melting of the polar ice, rising sea level, and extinction of species. To search for suitable and capable catalytic systems for CO2 conversion, electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) holds great promise. Emerging heterogeneous carbon materials have been considered as promising metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR, owing to their abundant natural resources, tailorable porous structures, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. They exhibit remarkable CO2RR properties, including catalytic activity, long durability, and high selectivity. Here, various carbon materials (e.g., carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, diamond, nanoporous carbon, and graphene dots) with heteroatom doping (e.g., N, S, and B) that can be used as metal-free catalysts for the CO2RR are highlighted. Recent advances regarding the identification of active sites for the CO2RR and the pathway of reduction of CO2 to the final product are comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, the emerging challenges and some perspectives on the development of heteroatom-doped carbon materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are included.

Abstract:The CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising technology for converting CO2 into chemicals and fuels, using surplus electricity from renewable sources. The technological viability of this process, however, is contingent on finding affordable and efficient catalysts. A range of materials containing abundant elements, such as N, C, and non‐noble metals, ranging from well‐defined immobilized complexes to doped carbon materials have emerged as a promising alternative. One of the main products of the CO2RR is CO, which is produced on these catalysts with selectivities comparable to those of noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, other valuable products, such as formic acid, hydrocarbons, and alcohols, have also been reported. The factors that control the catalytic performance of these materials, however, are not yet fully understood. A review of recent work is presented on heterogeneous nitrogen‐containing carbon catalysts for the CO2RR. The synthesis and characterization of these materials as well as their electrocatalytic performance are discussed. Combined experimental and theoretical studies are included to bring insight on the active sites and the reaction mechanism. This knowledge is key for developing optimal catalyst materials that meet the requirement in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability needed for commercial applications.

Abstract:Since decades, the global community has been facing an environmental crisis, resulting in the need to switch from outdated to new, more efficient energy sources and a more effective way of tackling the rising carbon dioxide emissions. The activation of small molecules such as O2, H+, and CO2 in a cost-and energy-efficient way has become one of the key topics of catalysis research. The main issue concerning the activation of these molecules is the kinetic barrier that has to be overcome in order for the catalyzed reaction to take place. Nature has already provided many pathways in which small molecules are being activated and changed into compounds with higher energy levels. One of the most famous examples would be photosynthesis in which CO2 is transformed into glucose and O2 through sunlight, thus turning solar energy into chemical energy. For these transformations nature mostly uses enzymes that function as catalysts among which porphyrin and porphyrin-like structures can be found. Therefore, the research focus lies on the design of novel porphyrinoid systems (e.g. corroles, porphyrins and phthalocyanines) whose metal complexes can be used for the direct electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to valuable chemicals like carbon monoxide, formate, methanol, ethanol, methane, ethylene, or acetate. For example the cobalt(III)triphenylphosphine corrole complex has been used as a catalyst for the electroreduction of CO2 to ethanol and methanol. The overall goal and emphasis of this research area is to develop a method for industrial use, raising the question of whether and how to incorporate the catalyst onto supportive materials. Graphene oxide, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon black, and activated carbon, to name a few examples, have become researched options. These materials also have a beneficial effect on the catalysis through for instance preventing rival reactions such as the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) during CO2 reduction. It is very apparent that the topic of small molecule activation offers many solutions for our current energy as well as environmental crises and is becoming a thoroughly investigated research objective. This review article aims to give an overview over recently gained knowledge and should provide a glimpse into upcoming challenges relating to this subject matter.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) represents an efficient approach to achieving carbon neutrality and simultaneously generating clean energy. However, the strong stability of CO 2 molecules and the diversity of products pose significant challenges. As an emerging material, bimetallic catalysts have been widely reported for their unique advantages, such as tunable electronic structures, suitable adsorption/desorption of CO 2 and intermediates, and optimizable d -band centers of active sites through bimetallic synergy. These catalysts provide a remarkable platform for converting CO 2 into high value-added chemicals. This review comprehensively summarizes recent research advances in bimetallic catalysts for CO 2 RR. Firstly, the challenges associated with CO 2 RR, including activity and selectivity are analyzed, followed by a discussion on the unique advantages of bimetallic catalysts. Next, their synthesis strategies are categorized into dual-atom site catalysts (DACs), bimetallic nanoparticles and nanoclusters, binary metal semiconductors, and layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Additionally, advanced characterization techniques of bimetallic catalysts and their applications in CO 2 RR are thoroughly introduced. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the application of bimetallic materials are highlighted. This review aims to provide inspiration for CO 2 RR into high-value chemicals and shed light on the research of bimetallic materials.
