Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.

Abstract:For electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR), metal–N sites exhibit promising catalytic activity, yet the structure–activity relationship remains largely unclear. Here we synthesize well-defined homogeneous catalysts containing four coordinating pyridine N atoms, regulate the coordination metal centers in immobilized molecular complexes, and investigate their catalytic performances in CO2RR. The resulting Co(qpy)/CNTs composite exhibit the highest efficiency. Its Faradaic efficiency for CO reaches >98% over the broad range from −0.5 V to −0.9 V (vs. RHE), with long-term stability over 100 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the larger electronic overlap between the catalytic site and intermediate can decrease the free energy change for *COOH formation. The calculation results are experimentally verified by changing the metal centers (Fe(qpy), Ni(qpy) and Cu(qpy)). This work unveils the relationship between metal–ligand coordination and CO2RR performance, and offers a strategy for the design and synthesis of high-performance catalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Electronic structure of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is critical for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis by adjusting the binding energy in oxygen-containing intermediates. However, the regulation of electronic structure has always been a challenge to improve catalytic reactivity. Herein, by introducing a heterogenous metal, the electronic structure through a direct bonding interaction to the active center atom is effectively adjusted. Partial charge transfer between the two atoms optimizes the binding energy of intermediates and reducing the energy barrier of the catalytic reaction. Theoretical calculations confirm these effects and the uniform distribution of 3d orbitals, leading to the improvement of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic reactivity. Benefiting from these attributes, the as-constructed bifunctional catalyst enables outstanding electrocatalytic performances in both oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation in various energy storage systems. The generality and expandability of this strategy is demonstrated by further successful development of other dual-metal catalysts systems with various active metals.

Abstract:Abstract Single-metal-atom catalysts (SMACs) have garnered extensive attention for various electrocatalytic applications, owing to their maximum atom-utilization efficiency, tunable electronic structure, and remarkable catalytic performance. In particular, carbon-based SMACs exhibit optimal electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) which is of paramount importance for several sustainable energy conversion and generation technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Despite continuous endeavors in developing various advanced carbon-based SMACs for electrocatalytic ORR, the rational regulation of coordination structure and thus the electronic structure of carbon-based SMACs remains challenging. In this review, we critically examine the role of coordination structure, including local coordination structure (i.e., metal atomic centers and the first coordination shell) and extended local coordination structure (i.e., the second and higher coordination shells), on the rational design of carbon-based SMACs for high-efficiency electrocatalytic ORR. Insights into the relevance between coordination structures and their intrinsic ORR activities are emphatically exemplified and discussed. Finally, we also propose the major challenges and future perspectives in the rational design of advanced carbon-based SMACs for electrocatalytic ORR. This review aims to emphasize the significance of coordination structure and deepen the insightful understanding of structure-performance relationships.

Abstract:AbstractThe design of active, selective, and stable CO2 reduction electrocatalysts is still challenging. A series of atomically dispersed Co catalysts with different nitrogen coordination numbers were prepared and their CO2 electroreduction catalytic performance was explored. The best catalyst, atomically dispersed Co with two‐coordinate nitrogen atoms, achieves both high selectivity and superior activity with 94 % CO formation Faradaic efficiency and a current density of 18.1 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 520 mV. The CO formation turnover frequency reaches a record value of 18 200 h−1, surpassing most reported metal‐based catalysts under comparable conditions. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that lower a coordination number facilitates activation of CO2 to the CO2.− intermediate and hence enhances CO2 electroreduction activity.

Abstract:: A general synthesis and the coordination environment control of single-atom catalysts (SACs) remain great challenges. Herein, a general host-guest cooperative protection strategy has been developed to construct SACs by introducing polypyrrole (PPy) into a bimetallic metal-organic framework. As a representative, the introduction of Mg 2+ in MgNi-MOF-74 extends the spatial distance of adjacent Ni atoms; the PPy guests serve as N source to stabilize the isolated Ni atoms during pyrolysis. As a result, a series of single-atom Ni catalysts (named Ni SA -N x -C) with different N coordination numbers have been fabricated by regulating the pyrolysis temperature. Significantly, the Ni SA -N 2 -C catalyst, with the lowest N coordination number, achieves very high CO Faradaic efficiency (98%) and turnover frequency (1622 h -1 ), far superior to those of Ni SA -N 3 -C and Ni SA -N 4 -C, in electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Theoretical calculations reveal that the low N coordination number of single-atom Ni sites in Ni SA -N 2 -C is favorable to the formation of COOH* intermediate and thus accounts for its superior activity.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is considered an efficient way to convert CO2 into high-value-added chemicals, and thus is of significant social and economic value. Metal single-atomic site catalysts (SASCs) generally have excellent selectivity because of their 100% atomic utilization and uniform structure of active sites, and thus promise a broad range of applications. However, SASCs still face challenges such as low intrinsic activity and low density of active sites. Precise regulation of the microstructures of SASCs is an effective method to improve their CO2RR performance and to obtain deep reduction products. In this article, we systematically summarize the current research status of SASCs developed for highly efficient catalysis of CO2RR, discuss the various structural regulation methods for enhanced activity and selectivity of SASCs for CO2RR, and review the application of in-situ characterization technologies in the SASC-catalyzed CO2RR. We then discuss the problems yet to be solved in this area, and propose the future directions of the research on the design and application of SASCs for CO2RR

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is an effective and sustainable route to achieve carbon neutrality by generating valuable fuels and feedstocks from renewable electricity. CO as one of the most economically valuable products, has been used for a wide range of applications in the synthesis of commodity and specialty chemicals. Single atom catalysts (SACs) are emerging as highly-active electrocatalysts for CO product from CO 2 RR due to high atomic utilization, adjustable coordination environment and strong metal-support interactions. Thus, the significant progresses force a comprehensive and critical summary reporting the microenvironment regulation strategies of SACs for CO 2 to CO, however, has been rarely reported. In this review, we focus on the current developed various design of microenvironment regulation strategies, including the design of metal catalytic center, the regulation of coordination environment (unsaturated coordination, oversaturated coordination, and heteroatom doping), support effect, and defect effect, to conduct the summary. It is generally believed that the change of microenvironment has an important effect on the electron distribution of the active site and the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates. Here, we attempt to reveal the essential source of single-atom catalytic activity through in-depth understanding of microenvironment regulation. And we hope to provide help for large-scale application of advanced SACs.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts, especially those with metal−N 4 moieties, hold great promise for facilitating the oxygen reduction reaction. However, the symmetrical distribution of electrons within the metal−N 4 moiety results in unsatisfactory adsorption strength of intermediates, thereby limiting their performance improvements. Herein, we present atomically coordination-regulated Co single-atom catalysts that comprise a symmetry-broken Cl−Co−N 4 moiety, which serves to break the symmetrical electron distribution. In situ characterizations reveal the dynamic evolution of the symmetry-broken Cl−Co−N 4 moiety into a coordination-reduced Cl−Co−N 2 structure, effectively optimizing the 3 d electron filling of Co sites toward a reduced d -band electron occupancy ( d 5.8 → d 5.28 ) under reaction conditions for a fast four-electron oxygen reduction reaction process. As a result, the coordination-regulated Co single-atom catalysts deliver a large half-potential of 0.93 V and a mass activity of 5480 A g metal −1 . Importantly, a Zn-air battery using the coordination-regulated Co single-atom catalysts as the cathode also exhibits a large power density and excellent stability.

Abstract:Modulating the steric-electronic configuration of metal-organic centers is key for tuning the activity and selectivity of heterogeneous reactions, especially multi-electron transfer reactions. Here, three different asymmetric metal-organic complexes with unique steric-electronic structures are immobilized on nanocarbon for an electron-transfer-controlled oxygen reduction reaction. The strong-field ligand-induced low-spin (LS) CoII creates a necessary steric configuration for regulating reaction selectivity through ligand's proton transfer ability, for which acidic diamine ligands facilitate a four-electron transfer (94%), whereas basic ligands drive a highly selective two-electron route (97%). The steric-electronic regulation of the reaction selectivity at catalytic sites is characterized using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, reaction kinetic path analysis, and density functional theory calculation. Our results indicate that an LS state of CoII with asymmetric coordination is necessary to form a unique “flytrap” structure to promote O2 capture for the subsequent proton-coupled electron transfer, which is regulated by the Brønsted acidity of coordinating ligands.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels to realize carbon recycling is a solution to the problem of renewable energy shortage and environmental pollution. Among all the catalysts, the carbon-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated metal atoms immobilized on conductive carbon substrates have shown significant potential toward CO2RR, which intrigues researchers to explore high-performance SACs for fuel and chemical production by CO2RR. Especially, regulating the coordination structures of the metal centers and the microenvironments of the substrates in carbon-based SACs has emerged as an effective strategy for the tailoring of their CO2RR catalytic performance. In this review, the current in situ/operando study techniques and the fundamental parameters for CO2RR performance are first briefly presented. Furthermore, the recent advances in synthetic strategies which regulate the atomic structures of the carbon-based SACs, including heteroatom coordination, coordination numbers, diatomic metal centers, and the microenvironments of substrates are summarized. In particular, the structure-performance relationship of the SACs toward CO2RR is highlighted. Finally, the inevitable challenges for SACs are outlined and further research directions toward CO2RR are presented from the perspectives.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis of the intrinsic electron structure (orbital structure, charge distribution, and electron spin states) of dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) from the inherent correlation between the active site and critical intermediates for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction is presented. Accordingly, systematically summarize optimization strategies for DACs including participation of synergistic atoms, regulation of central metal atoms diversity, engineering of atomic coordination environment and modification of metal‐support interaction. Electrocatalysis is a very attractive way to achieve a sustainable carbon cycle by converting CO2 into organic fuels and feedstocks. Therefore, it is crucial to design advanced electrocatalysts by understanding the reaction mechanism of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) with multiple electron transfers. Among electrocatalysts, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) are promising candidates due to their distinct electronic structures and extremely high atomic utilization efficiency. Herein, the eCO2RR mechanism and the identification of intermediates using advanced characterization techniques, with a particular focus on regulating the critical intermediates are systematically summarized. Further, the insightful understanding of the functionality of DACs originates from the variable metrics of electronic structures including orbital structure, charge distribution, and electron spin state, which influences the active sites and critical intermediates in eCO2RR processes. Based on the intrinsic relationship between variable metrics and critical intermediates, the optimized strategies of DACs are summarized containing the participation of synergistic atoms, engineering of the atomic coordination environment, regulation of the diversity of central metal atoms, and modulation of metal‐support interaction. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of atomically dispersed catalysts for eCO2RR processes are discussed.

Abstract:The coordination microenvironment of metal active sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) plays a crucial role in its performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, it remains a challenge to clarify the structure-performance relationship for CO2RR catalyzed by MOFs. Herein, a series of MOFs with different coordination microenvironments of Cu(I) sites (Cu-Cl, Cu-Br, and Cu-I) to evaluate their performances for CO2RR is synthesized. With the increasing radius of halogen atom, the CO2 adsorption capacity increases and d-band center of Cu positively shifts to the Fermi level, leading to enhance the selectivity of CO2 to CH4 conversion. Cu-I gives the highest total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.2%, with a FE of CH4 up to 57.2% and CH4 partial current density of 60.7 mA cm(-2) at -1.08 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculations reveal that the shifted d-band center of Cu site contributes to reduced formation energies of *CH2O and *CH3O intermediates, which is the potential-determining step of CO2RR and thus facilitates the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4. This study opens a new avenue for studying the relationship between the coordination microenvironment of active site and electroreduction reaction performance of MOFs.
Tuning the Coordination Environment in Single-Atom Catalysts to Achieve Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Abstract:Designing atomically dispersed metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a promising approach to achieve efficient energy conversion. Herein, we develop a template-assisted method to synthesize a series of single metal atoms anchored on porous N,S-codoped carbon (NSC) matrix as highly efficient ORR catalysts to investigate the correlation between the structure and their catalytic performance. The structure analysis indicates that an identical synthesis method results in distinguished structural differences between Fe-centered single-atom catalyst (Fe-SAs/NSC) and Co-centered/Ni-centered single-atom catalysts (Co-SAs/NSC and Ni-SAs/NSC) because of the different trends of each metal ion in forming a complex with the N,S-containing precursor during the initial synthesis process. The Fe-SAs/NSC mainly consists of a well-dispersed FeN4S2 center site where S atoms form bonds with the N atoms. The S atoms in Co-SAs/NSC and Ni-SAs/NSC, on the other hand, form metal–S bonds, resulting in CoN3S1 and NiN3S1 center sites. Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that the FeN4S2 center site is more active than the CoN3S1 and NiN3S1 sites, due to the higher charge density, lower energy barriers of the intermediates, and products involved. The experimental results indicate that all three single-atom catalysts could contribute high ORR electrochemical performances, while Fe-SAs/NSC exhibits the highest of all, which is even better than commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, Fe-SAs/NSC also displays high methanol tolerance as compared to commercial Pt/C and high stability up to 5000 cycles. This work provides insights into the rational design of the definitive structure of single-atom catalysts with tunable electrocatalytic activities for efficient energy conversion.
