Abstract:Four inorganic-organic hybrid borates, K[B6O9(OH)(en)]·H2O (1, en = ethylenediamine), K[B6O9(OH)(1,3-dap)]·H2O (2, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), K[B6O9(OH)(1,6-dah)0.5]·H2O (3, 1,6-dah = 1,6-diaminlhexane) and [(1,3-dap)Cd@B5O8(OH)]·0.5H2O (4), were made under solvothermal conditions. 1 and 2 are isostructural and feature a 2D layer built by B6O9(OH) clusters and modified by en and 1,3-dap via B-N-C linkages. By replacing en and 1,3-dap with longer and more flexible 1,6-dah, a new type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 3 was obtained, which was composed of the same B6O9(OH) cluster layers as in 1 and 2 and 1,6-dah linkers. By replacing alkali metal K with transition metal Cd under similar synthetic conditions, another type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 4 was made in which the Cd-centered wheel cluster layers and 1,3-dap linkers were connected via Cd-N-C linkages.

Abstract:Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 features borate chains are coordinated via AgO3 into layers which are further bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 crystallizes into the centrosymmetric space group of C2/c in the monoclinic crystal system and displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 also belongs to monoclinic space group C2/c and it features borate chains with B8O8 8‐membered rings along the c axis which are further coordinated via AgO3 into 2D layers. These layers are bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two compounds were further characterized through thermogravimetric and optical analysis and density functional theory calculation have also been carried out, addressing their electronic structures.

Abstract:A new borate chloride, Li2B5O8Cl, has been obtained. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B–O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B5O10], enriching the structural diversity of B–O configurations. The theoretical study indicates that the birefringence is estimated to be 0.026 at 1064 nm. Meanwhile, the structure-property relationships were analyzed through the first-principles calculation with a bandgap of 5.737 eV for GGA and 6.880 eV for HSE06, and the electronic properties of each group are analyzed by the density of states (DOS).

Abstract:Based upon global-minimum searches and first-principles electronic structural calculations, we present the perfectly planar B6O50/−/2− (1–3) systems. Notably, the C2v B6O50/− (1–2) clusters mark a groundbreaking advancement as the first boron oxide clusters to feature a five-membered ring. Both structures exhibit remarkable similarity, each characterized by a central B3O2 ring surrounded by three terminal BO groups. However, a notable difference lies in the bond lengths within the B3O2 core, which are uniform in the former but uneven in the latter. Detailed canonical molecular orbital and AdNDP analyses reveal the delocalized π bonds over the B3O2 ring, affirming the π aromaticity of B6O5−. The Cs B6O52− (3) cluster showcases a chain-like arrangement with three terminal BO groups and a typical OBO group linked to a B2 core, emphasizing the crucial role of electrons in shaping the structure. Detailed chemical bonding analyses reveal the presence of dual three-center four-electron (3c–4e) π hyperbonds in 3, shedding further light on its unique bonding characteristics. Moreover, this study comprehensively extends the B(BO)n0/− (n = 1–5) series and provides valuable perspectives on their structural evolution.

Abstract:Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (B-n(-)) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B-36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B-40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln(2)B(n)(-) (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.
Structural Evolution of Boron Clusters on Ag(111) Surfaces – From Atomic Chains to Triangular Sheets with Hexagonal Holes

Abstract:Unlike graphene and other 2D materials, borophene is 2D polymorphic with diverse hexagonal holes (HHs)‐triangles ratios and the concentrations of HHs are highly substrate dependent. Here, we systematically explored the evolution of boron cluster on Ag(111) surface, B N @Ag(111) (N=1~36), to understand the nucleation of 2D boron sheet on metal surface. Our calculation showed that, with the size increasing, the structures of most stable B N clusters undergo an evolution from compact triangular lattice, such as double‐chains or triple‐chains, to the ones with mixed triangular‐hexagonal lattices. The first single‐HH appears at N=12 and the first double‐HH appears at N=27. The stability of large B N clusters with mixed structures is derived from the charge transfer between triangular lattice and the HHs, as well as between the substrates and the B N clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding on the formation of small boron clusters in the initial nucleation stage of borophene growth.

Abstract:Borates have garnered a lot of attention in the realm of solid‐state chemistry due to their remarkable characteristics, in which the synthesis of borates with isolated [BO3] by adding rare‐earth elements is one of the main areas of structural design study. Five new mixed‐metal Y‐based rare‐earth borates, Ba2ZnY2(BO3)4, KNa2Y(BO3)2, Li2CsY4(BO3)5, LiRb2Y(BO3)2, and RbCaY(BO3)2, have been discovered using the high‐temperature solution approach. Isolated [BO3] clusters arranged in various configurations comprise their entire anionic framework, allowing for optical anisotropy tuning between 0.024 and 0.081 under 1064 nm. In this study, we characterize the relative placements of their [BO3] groups and examine how their structure affects their characteristics. The origin of their considerable optical anisotropy has been proven theoretically. This study unequivocally demonstrates that even a slight alteration to borates' anionic structure can result in a significant improvement in performance.

Abstract:Doping alkali metals into boron clusters can effectively compensate for the intrinsic electron deficiency of boron and lead to interesting boron-based binary clusters, owing to the small electronegativity of the former elements. We report on the computational design of a three-layered sandwich cluster, Na5B7, on the basis of global-minimum (GM) searches and electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the Na5B7 cluster can be described as a charge-transfer complex: [Na4]2+[B7]3−[Na]+. In this sandwich cluster, the [B7]3− core assumes a molecular wheel in shape and features in-plane hexagonal coordination. The magic 6π/6σ double aromaticity underlies the stability of the [B7]3− molecular wheel, following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The tetrahedral Na4 ligand in the sandwich has a [Na4]2+ charge-state, which is the simplest example of three-dimensional aromaticity, spherical aromaticity, or superatom. Its 2σ electron counting renders σ aromaticity for the ligand. Overall, the sandwich cluster has three-fold 6π/6σ/2σ aromaticity. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the sandwich cluster is dynamically fluxional even at room temperature, with a negligible energy barrier for intramolecular twisting between the B7 wheel and the Na4 ligand. The Na5B7 cluster offers a new example for dynamic structural fluxionality in molecular systems.

Abstract:The polymorphism of borophene makes it a promising system to realize tunable physical or chemical properties. Various pure borophene phases consisting of quasi‐1D boron chains with different widths have been commonly obtained in experimental studies. Here, it is shown that, due to a substrate mediation effect, artificial long‐range ordered phases of borophene consisting of different combinations of boron chains seamlessly joined together can be achieved on Ag(100). Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that mixed‐chain phases are more stable than the pure phase, and interact only weakly with the substrate. The mixed‐chain phases with various proportions of different chains can be well separated based on the crystal direction of the substrate. The successful growth of mixed‐chain phases is expected to deepen the impact of substrate tailored synthesis of borophene.

Abstract:Boron, the fifth element in the period table, exhibits diverse bonding patterns and interesting structures due to its electron deficiency.Unlike its neighbor carbon, closed-packed boron sheet with graphene-like honeycomb lattice is unstable so that planar boron clusters usually have interior vacancies and corrugated appearance.Delocalized multicenter bonding has an important role to stabilize the 2D structures, giving rise to the concept of σ, π, …multiple aromaticity.The experimental observation of the B 36 -cluster in 2014 established the viability of boron monolayer which was named as "borophene" by Wang and Li.Recently, studies on planar CoB 18 -and RhB 18 -clusters have suggested the possibilities of metal-doped borophenes (metallo-borophenes) with potentially tunable electronic, magnetic and optical properties.In this review, we summarize recent experimental and theoretical advances in 2D pure-boron and metaldoped boron clusters, as well as their implications for borophenes and metalloborophenes as novel new boron materials.
Electronic Structure of One-Dimensional Boron Chains with Density Functional Theory Method

Abstract:One-dimensional chain structures of Bn (n = 6-16) are calculated by employing a 6-311G* basis set. The present calculations show that all the chain structures of interest have local minima with large binding energy per atom and short bond length. It is also found that many previous reported structures of B6 and B7 clusters are saddle points and the one-dimensional chain structures are the corresponding ground-state structures of B6 and B7 clusters.

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Three inorganic–organic hybrid gallo-/alumino-borates [Ga2B7O14(OH)]·H2dah (1, dah = 1,6-diaminohexane), K2[Ga2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5] (2, en = ethylenediamine), and K2[Al2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5]·H2O (3) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a 3D porous-layered structure built by the alternation of [GaB4O10(OH)]6–, [B3O6]3– clusters and GaO4 tetrahedra, in which the novel [GaB4O10(OH)]6– cluster is first observed. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and made by [MB4O10(OH)]6–, [B3O6(en)0.5]3– clusters and MO4 tetrahedra (M = Ga/Al); their 3D porous layers are similar to those of 1 and further bridged by en linkers through the rare B–N–C covalent bonds, resulting in the 3D inorganic–organic hybrid framework. This is the first main-group metal borate with organic molecules participating in the oxoboron frameworks through B–N bonds. Abstract:Borates are favored by material scientists and chemists because of the significant electronegativity difference between B and O atoms and their flexible assembly modes resulting in abundant structures and excellent properties. For the design of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optical crystals with excellent macroscopic performance, it is crucial to choose appropriate cations and anionic groups, and microscopically reasonable assembly patterns. Herein, by introducing covalent tetrahedra ([MO4], M = Mg, Al), two new mixed alkali metals and alkaline earth metals borates, Rb3MgB5O10 and LiBaAl(BO3)2, were synthesized using the melt method and high-temperature solution method. They contain M-B-O two-dimensional (2D) layers (2∞[MgB5O10] and 2∞[Al(BO3)2], respectively) composed of isolated B-O groups ([B5O10]5- and [BO3]3-, respectively) and metal-centered tetrahedral connectors ([MgO4]6- and [AlO4]5-, respectively). Combining experiments and theoretical calculations shows that the two compounds have short cutoff edges (<200 nm) and moderate birefringences. Further analysis manifests that the isolated [MO4] covalent tetrahedra can optimize the arrangement of anion groups, guarantee the balanced optical properties of materials, and points out the direction for further exploration of novel borate structures.

Triple-chain Boron Clusters: Lengthening via Phosphorus Doping and Enhancing Stability through {P} by {CH} Substitution

Abstract:This theoretical study presents novel insights into the doping of boron clusters with an increasing number of dopant atoms, ranging from 1 to 4, that preserve the integrity of the original boron framework. The triple-chain forms of clusters B10 and B16 remain unchanged upon sequential addition of P atoms, showcasing a perfect isolobal substitution of {P} by {CH}. Similarities in the number of delocalized electrons are observed between pure and doped boron clusters, alongside the subsequent substitution of {P} by {CH}. All triple-chain structures exhibit high thermodynamic stability, having low vertical attachment energies and high vertical ionization energies. The lowest-lying isomer of B16P4 has thus a triple-chain shape instead of a tetrahedral Td form as previously reported. While an AdNDP analysis confirms the number of globally delocalized electrons, it differs much from a previous interpretation. The magnetic ring current maps support a double aromaticity of triple-chain structures. Electron counting rules established for triple-chain structures are verified. Target-Oriented Synthesis of Borate Derivatives Featuring Isolated [B3O3] Six-Membered Rings as Structural Features

Abstract:Borates provide an excellent platform for investigating the optical nonlinearity and linearity of crystals as photoelectric functional materials. In our work, borate derivatives with isolated [B3O3] six-membered rings as structural features are the preferred system due to their simple functional units and excellent properties. Herein, by utilizing the target-oriented synthesis, a series of borate derivatives, A2[B3O3F4(OH)] (A= NH4, Rb, Cs) (ABOFH), K2.3Cs0.7B3O3F6 (KCsBOF), and Cs3[B3O3(OH)3]Cl3 (CsBOHCl), with novel heteroanionic groups containing [BOxF4-x] (x = 0-3) and/or [BO2(OH)] units were obtained. ABOFH, KCsBOF, and CsBOHCl construct different two-dimensional pesudolayers featuring [B3O3F4(OH)], [B3O3F6], and [B3O3(OH)3] units, respectively. Also, the optical properties and the arrangement information of these anionic groups were studied. Among the total five compounds, (NH4)2[B3O3F4(OH)] and Cs3[B3O3(OH)3]Cl3 with enlarged birefringence and sufficient band gaps were screened out as promising birefringent crystals due to the optimally aligned configuration of birefringence-active heteroanionic units. The successful results of target-oriented synthesis indicate a more profound conclusion that the borate system now has more diversified structural chemistry, and an effective strategy was proposed to modify the arrangement and species of anionic units to optimize the performance of optical crystals.
