Abstract:A new mixed-metal polyborate, Na5Li[B12O18(OH)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), has been synthesized using solvothermal method and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UVeVis spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R-3c (No. 167) with unit cell parameters of a = b = 9.6767(6) angstrom, c = 36.358(5) angstrom, and Z = 6. Its structure features unprecedented 3D framework constructed from novel honeycomb-shaped inorganic Na-O sheets with unique 12-MR sodium rings and supramolecular polyborate 2D layers of lithium-centered [B12O18(OH)(6)](6-). Abstract:A new borate chloride, Li2B5O8Cl, has been obtained. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B–O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B5O10], enriching the structural diversity of B–O configurations. The theoretical study indicates that the birefringence is estimated to be 0.026 at 1064 nm. Meanwhile, the structure-property relationships were analyzed through the first-principles calculation with a bandgap of 5.737 eV for GGA and 6.880 eV for HSE06, and the electronic properties of each group are analyzed by the density of states (DOS).

Abstract:Four inorganic-organic hybrid borates, K[B6O9(OH)(en)]·H2O (1, en = ethylenediamine), K[B6O9(OH)(1,3-dap)]·H2O (2, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), K[B6O9(OH)(1,6-dah)0.5]·H2O (3, 1,6-dah = 1,6-diaminlhexane) and [(1,3-dap)Cd@B5O8(OH)]·0.5H2O (4), were made under solvothermal conditions. 1 and 2 are isostructural and feature a 2D layer built by B6O9(OH) clusters and modified by en and 1,3-dap via B-N-C linkages. By replacing en and 1,3-dap with longer and more flexible 1,6-dah, a new type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 3 was obtained, which was composed of the same B6O9(OH) cluster layers as in 1 and 2 and 1,6-dah linkers. By replacing alkali metal K with transition metal Cd under similar synthetic conditions, another type of oxoboron cluster organic framework 4 was made in which the Cd-centered wheel cluster layers and 1,3-dap linkers were connected via Cd-N-C linkages.

Abstract:Two three-dimensional (3D) porous-layered borates, Na0.5K2.5[AlB7O13(OH)]·H2O (1) and NaKCs[GaB7O13(OH)]·1.5H2O (2), have been obtained under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1, while 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n. Compounds 1-2 contain the similar units of B7O13(OH) and AlO4/GaO4, the strict alternations of B7O13(OH) clusters and AlO4/GaO4 give to 3D open-framework layers with 8-R and 13-R channels along different directions. The shapes and orientations of channels of 1-2 are different due to their different space group. It's interesting to note that three different alkali metal ions (Na+, K+, and Cs+) are found in the different positions in 2. UV-vis diffuse reflectance analysis indicates that the both compounds show a wide transparency range with a short-wavelength absorption edge below 190 nm.

Abstract:The discovery of new borates with unique structures has always been a growing part of solid-state chemistry, especially for polyborates. Herein, a new aluminoborate, Cs3AlB6O12, has been discovered by a high-temperature solution in a vacuum system. The highly polymerized [B12O24] cluster, unlike the annular configuration in previously reported polyborates, is found in Cs3AlB6O12 for the first time. The different linkage reflected by the local symmetry in cluster makes these borates not isotypic, although the formula of [B12O24] is identical. Abstract:Three inorganic–organic hybrid gallo-/alumino-borates [Ga2B7O14(OH)]·H2dah (1, dah = 1,6-diaminohexane), K2[Ga2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5] (2, en = ethylenediamine), and K2[Al2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5]·H2O (3) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a 3D porous-layered structure built by the alternation of [GaB4O10(OH)]6–, [B3O6]3– clusters and GaO4 tetrahedra, in which the novel [GaB4O10(OH)]6– cluster is first observed. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and made by [MB4O10(OH)]6–, [B3O6(en)0.5]3– clusters and MO4 tetrahedra (M = Ga/Al); their 3D porous layers are similar to those of 1 and further bridged by en linkers through the rare B–N–C covalent bonds, resulting in the 3D inorganic–organic hybrid framework. This is the first main-group metal borate with organic molecules participating in the oxoboron frameworks through B–N bonds. Abstract:Two new bismuth hydroxyl borates, Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] (I) and Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures were determined by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, respectively. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with the lattice constants of a = 6.0268(3) Å, b = 11.3635(6) Å, and c = 19.348(1) Å. Compound II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cm with the lattice constants of a = 5.4676(6) Å, b = 14.6643(5) Å, c = 3.9058(1) Å, and β = 135.587(6)°. The borate fundamental building block (FBB) in I is a three-ring unit [B(3)O(6)(OH)](4-), which connects one by one via sharing corners, forming an infinite zigzag chain along the a direction. The borate chains are further linked by hydrogen bonds, showing as a borate layer within the ab plane. The FBB in II is an isolated [BO(2)(OH)](2-) triangle, which links to two neighboring FBBs by strong hydrogen bonds, resulting in a borate chain along the a direction. Both compounds contain [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers, and the [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers combine with the corresponding borate layers alternatively, forming the whole structures. These two new bismuth borates are the first ones containing [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers in borates. The appearance of Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II) completes the series of compounds Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)], Bi(2)O(2)CO(3), and Bi(2)O(2)[NO(3)(OH)] and the formation of Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] provides another example in demonstrating the polymerization tendency of borate groups.
Structures and chemical bonding of B6O50/−/2−: The first boron oxide clusters with five-membered ring and their structural diversity

Abstract:Based upon global-minimum searches and first-principles electronic structural calculations, we present the perfectly planar B6O50/−/2− (1–3) systems. Notably, the C2v B6O50/− (1–2) clusters mark a groundbreaking advancement as the first boron oxide clusters to feature a five-membered ring. Both structures exhibit remarkable similarity, each characterized by a central B3O2 ring surrounded by three terminal BO groups. However, a notable difference lies in the bond lengths within the B3O2 core, which are uniform in the former but uneven in the latter. Detailed canonical molecular orbital and AdNDP analyses reveal the delocalized π bonds over the B3O2 ring, affirming the π aromaticity of B6O5−. The Cs B6O52− (3) cluster showcases a chain-like arrangement with three terminal BO groups and a typical OBO group linked to a B2 core, emphasizing the crucial role of electrons in shaping the structure. Detailed chemical bonding analyses reveal the presence of dual three-center four-electron (3c–4e) π hyperbonds in 3, shedding further light on its unique bonding characteristics. Moreover, this study comprehensively extends the B(BO)n0/− (n = 1–5) series and provides valuable perspectives on their structural evolution.

Abstract:Two novel isotypic polyborate cluster compounds Na 5[MB 24O 34(OH) 12]. nH 2O (M = Cr (3+), Al (3+)) have been synthesized in a boric acid flux closed system at 220 degrees C by using gel as precursors. The structure of the Cr compound was determined by low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the Al compound was confirmed to be isostructural by powder X-ray diffraction and similar FT-IR spectra and thermal behavior. Na 5[CrB 24O 34(OH) 12]. nH 2O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/ c with the cell parameters a = 17.4549(3) A, b = 11.1976(2) A, c = 21.2403(3) A, beta = 94.644(2) degrees , V = 4137.85(12) A (3), and Z = 4. The predominant feature of the structure are the spherelike polyborate clusters [MB 24O 34(OH) 12] (5-). The M (3+) cation is located at the center of the cluster, around which four hexaborate units ([B 6O 10(OH) 3] (5-)) are tetrahedrally assembled in almost a perfect T d symmetry. To the best of our knowledge, [MB 24O 34(OH) 12] (5-) is the first example of a polyborate cluster that contains 24 boron atoms. Upon heating, the compounds show two steps of weight loss, including the loss of the disengaged water and dehydration of the hydroxy groups. The first step is reversible, retaining the structure framework. The second weight loss is continuous and irreversible.
LiB 9 O 15 ·H 2 dap·H 2 O: A Cotemplated Acentric Layer-Pillared Borate Built by Mixed Oxoboron Clusters

Abstract:An acentric layer-pillared borate, LiB9O15·H2dap·H2O (1, dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), cotemplated by organic and inorganic cations and build by mixed oxoboron cluster units of B6O138- and B3O75-, has first been made under solvothermal conditions, in which the B6O138- clusters link each other to form 2D layers containing 9-membered ring (MR) windows, while the B3O75- clusters join together to produce 1D chains that further perform as the pillars to connect neighboring layers, resulting in a 3D layer-pillared framework with 13- and 7-MR channels located by H2dap2+ and Li+ cations, respectively. Its second harmonic generation shows a response of ∼2.1 times that of KDP (KH2PO4).

Abstract:Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 features borate chains are coordinated via AgO3 into layers which are further bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 crystallizes into the centrosymmetric space group of C2/c in the monoclinic crystal system and displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 also belongs to monoclinic space group C2/c and it features borate chains with B8O8 8‐membered rings along the c axis which are further coordinated via AgO3 into 2D layers. These layers are bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two compounds were further characterized through thermogravimetric and optical analysis and density functional theory calculation have also been carried out, addressing their electronic structures.

Abstract:Enthusiasm for the exploration of nonlinear alkali metal borates remains high. Focusing on the Li-B-O-X (X = Cl and Br) system, two examples of noncentrosymmetric borates, Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, were obtained using a high-temperature solution method under vacuum conditions. Structurally, the Li3B8O13X crystals exhibit two independent alternately arranged three-dimensional B-O network structures formed by the basic building block unit B8O16. The performance measurements demonstrate their short ultraviolet cutoff edges. The theoretical calculation indicates that the BO3 units dominate the contribution to their large optical anisotropy with the birefringence, 0.094 and 0.088@1064 nm for Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, respectively.

Abstract:Structures and electronic properties of alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) are determined using the CALYPSO method for the global minimum search followed by density functional theory. It is found that the global minima obtained for the neutral clusters correspond to the half-sandwich structure and those of the monoanionic clusters correspond to the boat-shaped structure. The neutral MB12 (M = Li, Na, K) can be considered as a member of the half-sandwich doped B12 clusters, and the geometrical pattern of anion MB12– (M = Li, Na, K) is a new structure that is different from other doped B12 clusters. Natural population and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12– are characterized as charge transfer complexes, M+B122–, resulting in symmetrically distributed chemical bonds and electrostatic interactions between cationic M+ and boron atoms. The calculated spectra indicate that MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) has meaningful spectral features that can be compared with future experimental data. Our work enriches the varieties of geometrical structures of doped boron clusters and can provide much insight into boron nanomaterials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Four novel inorganic-organic hybrid cadmium borates, namely [EAH]2{(py)2Cd@[B14O20-(OH)6]} (1, py = pyridine, EA = ethylamine), [PAH]2{(py)2Cd@[B14O20(OH)6]} (2, PA = propylamine), [pyH]2{(py)2Cd@[B14O20(OH)6]} (3) and {(AImH)2Cd@[B14O20(OH)6]} (4, AIm = 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole) have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. They represent the first hybrid cadmium borates that exhibit 3D supramolecular open-frameworks with different topologies. All the networks are formed by the unprecedented Cd-centred cluster [Cd@B14O20(OH)6](2-), and further link each other via a multipoint H-bond system. UV-Vis-NIR spectral investigation reveals that these borates are wide-band-gap semiconductors. Moreover, they display strong fluorescence emission around 430 nm, making them excellent candidates for optoelectronic applications as blue materials.

Abstract:A new inorganic-organic hybrid polyoxoboroniobate {H4K2[Cu(cis-en)2(H2O)]9[Cu(cis-en)2]6[Cd2(cis-en)2(trans-en)][LiB2Nb29O86]2·79H2O} (1, en = ethylenediamine), is built from pagoda-shaped {LiB2Nb29O86} clusters, linear {Cd2(cis-en)2(trans-en)} bridging units, and copper-amine complexes. The {LiB2Nb29O86} cluster represents the first example of combining oxoboron clusters with polyoxoniobate clusters (PONbs). It consists of an unusual HPONb fragment {LiNb18O54}, a fused-ring structural boroniobate cluster {B2Nb5O13}, and a classical Lindqvist {Nb6O19} fragment. The {Cd2(cis-en)2(trans-en)} and [Cu(cis-en)2]2+ complexes link the pagoda-shaped {LiB2Nb29O86} clusters into 1D infinite ladder chains. This is the first instance of simultaneous coordination of the cis-en and trans-en ligands with a single metal cation in the inorganic-organic hybrid PONb family. Furthermore, 1 exhibits good proton conductivity.

Abstract:The first chloroaluminoborate, CsAlB 3 O 6 Cl, with innovative AlO 3 Cl tetrahedra and a perfect planar arrangement of [B 3 O 6 ] groups, was structurally designed and synthesized via chlorination of [AlO 4 ] tetrahedra. Simultaneously, the smooth introduction of the [AlO 3 Cl] group into borates initiates the development of a chloroaluminoborate and greatly enriches the structural chemistry of aluminoborates.
