Abstract:Abstract More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO 3 and tetrahedral BO 4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) with linear BO 2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11 B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO 2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO 2 were extracted from K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) containing BO 2 , BO 3 , and BO 4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.

Abstract:Borates have garnered a lot of attention in the realm of solid‐state chemistry due to their remarkable characteristics, in which the synthesis of borates with isolated [BO3] by adding rare‐earth elements is one of the main areas of structural design study. Five new mixed‐metal Y‐based rare‐earth borates, Ba2ZnY2(BO3)4, KNa2Y(BO3)2, Li2CsY4(BO3)5, LiRb2Y(BO3)2, and RbCaY(BO3)2, have been discovered using the high‐temperature solution approach. Isolated [BO3] clusters arranged in various configurations comprise their entire anionic framework, allowing for optical anisotropy tuning between 0.024 and 0.081 under 1064 nm. In this study, we characterize the relative placements of their [BO3] groups and examine how their structure affects their characteristics. The origin of their considerable optical anisotropy has been proven theoretically. This study unequivocally demonstrates that even a slight alteration to borates' anionic structure can result in a significant improvement in performance.

Abstract:Borates are favored by material scientists and chemists because of the significant electronegativity difference between B and O atoms and their flexible assembly modes resulting in abundant structures and excellent properties. For the design of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optical crystals with excellent macroscopic performance, it is crucial to choose appropriate cations and anionic groups, and microscopically reasonable assembly patterns. Herein, by introducing covalent tetrahedra ([MO4], M = Mg, Al), two new mixed alkali metals and alkaline earth metals borates, Rb3MgB5O10 and LiBaAl(BO3)2, were synthesized using the melt method and high-temperature solution method. They contain M-B-O two-dimensional (2D) layers (2∞[MgB5O10] and 2∞[Al(BO3)2], respectively) composed of isolated B-O groups ([B5O10]5- and [BO3]3-, respectively) and metal-centered tetrahedral connectors ([MgO4]6- and [AlO4]5-, respectively). Combining experiments and theoretical calculations shows that the two compounds have short cutoff edges (<200 nm) and moderate birefringences. Further analysis manifests that the isolated [MO4] covalent tetrahedra can optimize the arrangement of anion groups, guarantee the balanced optical properties of materials, and points out the direction for further exploration of novel borate structures.

Abstract:The primary goal of this review is to present a clear chemical perspective of borates in order to stimulate and facilitate the discovery of new borate-based optical materials. These materials, which exhibit structures as varied as they are complex, are needed to meet the urgent technological milestones. In the current period of rapid sociotechnological breakthroughs, the need for the rational design and discovery of novel borates with superior performance is greater than ever before. Through the sustained efforts of chemists and material scientists, more than 3900 boron-containing compounds, including borate minerals and synthetic borates, have been documented in the scientific literature. This review provides a survey of all the reported anhydrous borates and an analysis of their complex structural chemistry. State-of-the-art progress related to technological advances in borate-based nonlinear optical, birefringent, and self-frequency-doubling materials is surveyed, with special emphasis on the relationships between structural architectures and optical properties. Abstract:A case of hydrous borate with the formula of Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O was synthesized by the traditional hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the chiral P1 space group and has a unique two-dimensional 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer that is constructed by the hydrogen involved [B13O22(OH)5] fundamental building blocks (FBBs). The Ba atoms and H2O molecules are filled in the three-dimensional pore constructed by the 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer. Interestingly, Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O is the first case of hydrous borates that has the above rare [B13O22(OH)5] FBB and 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer, which enriching the structural chemistry of borate system. The diffuse reflection spectrum result shows that the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge of Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O is below 200 nm. Its second harmonic generation (SHG) response is approximately 1.0 times that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength and it is also phase-matchable. Both results indicate that the title compound is a nonlinear optical crystal for UV spectral region. Theoretical simulation calculation shows that the occupied VE states are mainly contributed by the O-2p orbitals, and therefore [B13O22(OH)5] groups are the main sources of SHG effects.

Abstract:A new borate chloride, Li2B5O8Cl, has been obtained. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B–O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B5O10], enriching the structural diversity of B–O configurations. The theoretical study indicates that the birefringence is estimated to be 0.026 at 1064 nm. Meanwhile, the structure-property relationships were analyzed through the first-principles calculation with a bandgap of 5.737 eV for GGA and 6.880 eV for HSE06, and the electronic properties of each group are analyzed by the density of states (DOS).

Abstract:Borate crystals can be chemically and functionally modified by the fluorination strategy, which encourages the identification of emerging fluorooxoborates with a structure and set of characteristics not seen in any other oxide parents. However, the bulk of fluorooxoborates have been found accidentally, rational methods of synthesis are required, particularly for the infrequently occurring poly-fluorinated components. Herein, we reported the use of bifluoride salts as a potent source of fluorine to prepare fluorooxoborates that contain rarely tri-fluorinated [BF3 X] (X=O and CH3 ) tetrahedra and eleven compounds were found. We identified the optical properties of the organofluorinated group [CH3 BF3 ] and their potential for nonlinear optics for the first time. Among these, two non-centrosymmetric components hold potential for the production of 266 nm harmonic coherent light for nonlinear optics, and more crucially, have the benefit of growing large size single crystals. Our study establishes experimental conditions for the coexistence of the diverse functional groups, enabling the production of poly-fluorinated optical crystals.
Fluorooxoborate Promoting the Exploration of Short-Wavelength Linear and Nonlinear Optical Crystals with Expected Properties and Versatile Structures

Abstract:Short-wavelength optical crystals are the key components of optical devices, but only a few crystals can be used in practical applications. In recent years, the emergence of fluorooxoborate has expanded the source of optical crystals. Herein, a series of new fluorooxoborates, α-K3B6O9F3, K1.2Rb1.8B6O9F3, K2.9Cs0.1B6O9F3, Rb2B6O9F(OH), KB3O4F2, and K5B11O18F2, were successfully synthesized in a closed system. Among them, α-K3B6O9F3, K1.2Rb1.8B6O9F3, K2.9Cs0.1B6O9F3, and Rb2B6O9F(OH) are noncentrosymmetric and show evident second-harmonic generation response (0.7–0.8 × KH2PO4). Specifically, Rb2B6O9F(OH) has a unique [B6O11F(OH)] fundamental building block composed of four different anionic units, and its shortest phase-matching wavelength is 244 nm based on theoretical calculations. The centrosymmetric KB3O4F2 has a large birefringence (0.096 at 546 nm) due to its rare one-dimensional [B3O4F2]∞ chains, and K5B11O18F2 has a unique [B11O21F2] fundamental building block that polymerizes to form the 14-membered ring channels. These results facilitate the exploration of short-wavelength optical materials in fluorooxoborates.

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Discovery of crystals functionalized by optically active units is of great significance to laser science and industry since these species have the potential for frequency conversion and light modulation. This spurred researchers on to find new optical crystals with such functionality, especially in new unexplored systems. Herein, inspired by the idea of introducing different optically active units into one structure, difluoro(oxalato)borate was defined as a new source of short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) optical crystals. Based on this, three difluoro(oxalato)borates with [BF2C2O4] bifunctional units were synthesized and characterized. Among them, NaBF2C2O4 shows a large nonlinear optical effect (1.1 × KDP), a wide band gap (E g = 4.48 eV), and a large birefringence (Δn exp. = 0.162@546.1 nm), making it a potential short-wavelength UV nonlinear optical crystal. Among them, LiBF2C2O4 and Sr(BF2C2O4)(BF4), with giant birefringence (Δn cal. = 0.317 and 0.130@546 nm) as well as wide band gaps (5.54 and 4.76 eV), were characterized as short-wavelength UV birefringent crystals. Theoretical analysis clarifies that [BF2C2O4] constructed by both π- and non-π-conjugated units shows balanced microscopic properties and that it can be regarded as bifunctional units to cause a considerable nonlinear optical effect and birefringence simultaneously. Our study confirms the feasibility of exploring optical crystals with balanced performance in the difluoro(oxalato)borate system.

Abstract:Ultraviolet nonlinear optical (UV NLO) materials have garnered significant interest for their prospective applications in advanced laser technologies. However, tailoring the desired structure in these materials remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a simple yet effective strategy for synthesizing rare-earth borates, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 (x = 2-3), by manipulating the A-site cations to induce structural evolution. Notably, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 undergoes a phase transition from the Pnc2 to the Amm2 space group by adjusting the K+ content to reach x = 2.6. Moreover, the target compounds exhibit strong phase-matching second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, ranging from 1.3 to 3.3 times that of KDP (KH2PO4), and feature short UV cutoff edges of around 204-208 nm. Additionally, the correlation between microscopic polarizability, optical anisotropy, and the structural evolution of these materials was characterized through structural and theoretical analyses. These findings highlight the potential applications of K x Na3-x La2B3O9 as UV NLO materials and underscore the viability of manipulating A-site cations to fabricate NLO crystals with desirable properties.

Abstract:A new organic–inorganic hybrid pentaborate [C6H14N][B5O6(OH)4] (1) has been synthesised hydrothermally in aqueous solution and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, DTA-TG and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, with the lattice constants of a=9.463 (2)Å, b=14.005 (3)Å, c=10.642 (2)Å, and β=93.82(3)°. The structure consists of isolated [B5O6(OH)4]− groups interlinked by protonated cyclohexylamine via hydrogen bonding. Blue photoluminescence of 1 is observed upon UV excitation, which can be further enhanced and modified to near-white emission by thermal treatment. The maximum emissions and peak shapes of 1–250°C are also tunable with various excitation wavelengths in the region of 350–470nm. This compound provides a novel example of organically templated borate materials potential for display and lighting applications.

Abstract:We discuss scanning near‐field optical microscope based on original double resonant montage of a fibre probe onto the tuning fork and proprietary electronics capable of fast and precise measurements of the resonant frequency and the quality factor of sensor dithering. Special emphasis is given on the pulsed excitation/gated detection of optical signal. This option as well as the possibility of fast scanning facilitates a lot the problem of single fluorescence centres detection. To illustrate the performance of this microscope, we present first true single‐molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer scanning near‐field optical microscope images of single CdSe nanocrystals on glass slide surface and observation of an optical ‘pseudoresolution’ of densely packed 100‐nm‐diameter transfluorescent spheres in noisy conditions.

Abstract:A new acentric barium borate, Ba2B10O16(OH)2·(H3BO3)(H2O) (1), was synthesized via a hydrothermal process. Compound 1 contains two different boron oxide units of [B5O10(OH)]6- anions and H3BO3 molecules and features 9-ring channels along the c axis in a layered structure. This barium borate is a possible deep-ultraviolet nonlinear-optical crystal for its moderate second-harmonic-generation signal and wide transparency window below 190 nm.

Abstract:Polymorphism is a subtle but important phenomenon in solid-state chemistry and material sciences. Generally, promoting the formation of a specific polymorph enables the modulation of symmetries and thus the optical properties, but the discovery of such polymorphs with tunable structures is extremely challenging. Herein, by focusing on the recently emerging fluorooxoborate system with a flexible skeleton, a series of new fluorooxoborate phases with the formula of BaBOF3 were obtained by a combined computational–experimental method. Among them, noncentrosymmetric α- and Cc-BaBOF3 phases show nonlinear optical effects and short deep-UV absorption edges, indicating that both compounds can be used as nonlinear optical materials. The small torsion and deformation in their anionic units, that is, [BO2F2] units, cause a huge difference in symmetry and thus in the nonlinear optical property. We demonstrated that the BaBOF3 polymorph with tunable structures and symmetries is a simple but perfect case to understand the influence of B–O/F interactions on creating new phases, which also enriches crystal chemistry of the species of fluorooxoborates.
