Abstract:Turing Award winner Juris Hartmanis introduced in 1959 lattices of subspaces of generalized partitions ("partitions of type n"; "geometries" if $n = 2$). Hartmanis states it is "an unsolved problem whether there are any incomplete lattice homomorphisms in" lattices of subspaces of geometries. (He continues, "[I]f so how can these geometries be characterized.") We give a positive answer to this question.

Abstract:Let $L$ be a lattice. We call a congruence relation $\gQ$ of $L$ isoform, if any two congruence classes of $\gQ$ are isomorphic (as lattices). Let us call the lattice $L$ isoform, if all congruences of $L$ are isoform. G. Grätzer and E.\,T. Schmidt proved that every finite distributive lattice $D$ can be represented as the congruence lattice of a finite isoform lattice $L$. We now prove that every finite lattice $K$ has a congruence-preserving extension to a finite isoform lattice $L$.

Abstract:We study in general algebras Gratzer's notion of congruence preserving function, characterizing functions in terms of stability under inverse image of particular Boolean algebras of subsets generated from any subset of the algebra. Weakening Gratzer's notion to only finite index congruences, a similar result holds with lattices of sets. Genereralizing the notion to that of stable preorder preserving function, we extend these characterizations to Boolean algebras and lattices generated from any recognizable subset of the algebra. Our starting point is a result with related flavor on the additive algebra of natural integers which was obtained some years ago. All these results can be visualized in the diagram of Table 1. We finally consider some simple particular conditions on the algebra allowing to get a richer diagram.

Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.

Abstract:For a lattice L, let Princ L denote the ordered set of principal congruences of L. In a pioneering paper, G. Gratzer characterized the ordered sets Princ L of finite lattices L; here we do the same for countable lattices. He also showed that each bounded ordered set H is isomorphic to Princ L of a bounded lattice L. We prove a related statement: if an ordered set H with least element is the union of a chain of principal order ideals, then H is isomorphic to Princ L of some lattice L.

Abstract:For a lattice L with 0 and 1, let Princ L denote the ordered set of principal congruences of L. For {0,1}-sublattices A subseteq B of L, congruence generation defines a natural map from Princ A to Princ B. In this way, we obtain a small category of bounded ordered sets as objects and some 0-separating {0,1}-preserving monotone maps as morphisms such that every hom-set consists of at most one morphism. We prove the converse: each small category of bounded ordered set with these properties is representable by principal lattice congruences in the above sense.

Abstract:For a profinite group $G$ and a rigid analytic space $X$, we study when an $\mathcal O_X(X)$-linear representation $V$ of $G$ admits a lattice, i.e. an $\mathcal O_{\mathcal X}(\mathcal X)$-linear model for a suitable formal model $\mathcal X$ of $X$ in the sense of Berthelot. We give a positive answer, under mild assumptions, when $X$ is a ``wide open'' space. As a consequence, we are able to describe explicit open rational subdomains of $X$ over which $V$ is constant after reduction modulo a power of $p$. We give applications in two different directions. First, we prove explicit results on the reduction modulo powers of $p$ of sheaves of crystalline and semistable representations of fixed weight. Second, we focus on the sheaves of Galois representations on eigenvarieties, which are important examples of wide open spaces thanks to a result of Bellaïche and Chenevier. We give an application of our main results to the pseudorepresentation carried by the Coleman--Mazur eigencurve, which can be made explicit whenever equations for a rational subdomain of the eigencurve are given.

Towards Strong Reverse Minkowski-type Inequalities for Lattices

Abstract:We present a natural reverse Minkowski-type inequality for lattices, which gives upper bounds on the number of lattice points in a Euclidean ball in terms of sublattice determinants, and conjecture its optimal form. The conjecture exhibits a surprising wealth of connections to various areas in mathematics and computer science, including a conjecture motivated by integer programming by Kannan and Lovász (Annals of Math. 1988), a question from additive combinatorics asked by Green, a question on Brownian motions asked by Saloff-Coste (Colloq. Math. 2010), a theorem by Milman and Pisier from convex geometry (Ann. Probab. 1987), worst-case to average-case reductions in lattice-based cryptography, and more. We present these connections, provide evidence for the conjecture, and discuss possible approaches towards a proof. Our main technical contribution is in proving that our conjecture implies the $\ell_2$ case of the Kannan and Lovász conjecture. The proof relies on a novel convex relaxation for the covering radius, and a rounding procedure for based on "uncrossing" lattice subspaces.

Abstract:Given a lattice $\mathbb{L}$ and a class $K$ of algebraic structures, we say that $\mathbb{L}$ \emph{forces nilpotency} in $K$ if every algebra $\mathbf{A} \in K$ whose congruence lattice $\mathrm{Con} (\mathbf{A})$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{L}$ is nilpotent. We describe congruence lattices that force nilpotency, supernilpotency or solvability for some classes of algebras. For this purpose, we investigate which commutator operations can exist on a given congruence lattice.

Abstract:Let Γ be a graph product of finite groups, with finite underlying graph, and let Δ be the associated right-angled building. We prove that a uniform lattice Λ in the cubical automorphism group Aut ( Δ ) is weakly commensurable to Γ if and only if all convex subgroups of Λ are separable. As a corollary, any two finite special cube complexes with universal cover Δ have a common finite cover. An important special case of our theorem is where Γ is a right-angled Coxeter group and Δ is the associated Davis complex. We also obtain an analogous result for right-angled Artin groups. In addition, we deduce quasi-isometric rigidity for the group Γ when Δ has the structure of a Fuchsian building.

Abstract:Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite distributive lattices states that any finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of order ideals (lower sets) of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. This theorem can be extended as follows: A non-finite distributive lattice that is locally finite and has a $\hat{0}$ is isomorphic to the lattice of finite order ideals of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. In addition, certain ``well ordering'' properties are shown to be equivalent to the premises of the extended theorem.

Abstract:We give several characterizations of order continuous vector lattice homomorphisms between Archimedean vector lattices. We reduce the proofs of some of the equivalences to the case of composition operators between vector lattices of continuous functions, and so we obtain a characterization of order continuity of such operators. Motivated by this, we investigate various properties of the sublattices of the space $C\left(X\right)$, where $X$ is a Tychonoff topological space. We also obtain several characterizations of a regular sublattice of a vector lattice, and show that the closure of a regular sublattice of a Banach lattice is also regular.

Abstract:An FN lattice $F$ is a simple, infinite, semidistributive lattice. Its existence was recently proved by R. Freese and J.\,B. Nation. Let $\mathsf{B}_n$ denote the Boolean lattice with $n$ atoms. For a lattice $K$, let $K^+$ denote $K$ with a new unit adjoined. We prove that the finite distributive lattices: $\mathsf{B}_0^+, \mathsf{B}_1^+,\mathsf{B}_2^+, \dots$ can be represented as congruence lattices of infinite semidistributive lattices. The case $n = 0$ is the Freese-Nation result, which is utilized in the proof. We also prove some related representation theorems.
