Abstract:This paper describes the process of theoretical analysis, experimental test and computer modelling of dishwasher hydraulic filtration system. Analytical equations based on theoretical study and empirical formulas derived from experimental tests are integrated to form a computer model where the closed-loop wash cycle is simulated, critical variables are calculated in the time domain, the effects of core design parameters are evaluated. Simulation results correlate reasonably well with experimental rig test and reference dishwasher performance in broad terms at particle removal and accumulation, filter clogging and cleaning, washing efficiency and water-energy saving etc. It is shown the model can be utilized to enhance the understanding of fundamentals in hydraulic filtration systems, optimize dishwasher design and performance, and reduce product time to market. Modelling could be of great assistance in, and an inseparable part of product development even in traditionally experiment-intensive companies. Abstract:Today, with the advancement of technology, studies on machines that make human life easier have also increased. While the companies in the sector compete with each other, they work hard to design machines that make a difference and to improve customer perception. In present study, a lower spray arm mechanism was designed to increase the washing efficiency of dishwashers and to reduce the noise level during operation. The washing performance of dishwashers could be increased with long washing times and the use of chemicals. However it causes increasing water and energy consumption, as well as environmental effect. For this reason, it has been aimed to improve the cleaning performance with the help of water jet, which is defined as the mechanical effect. For this purpose, a new mechanism design with planet spray arm, which allows sweep more area in the interior volume of the dishwasher, has been realized. The washing performance of the dishwasher, in which this planet spray arm mechanism is used, has been experimentally investigated in accordance with the EN 50242 Standard. The washing performance has been improved by 6.14% and dramatic decreases in sound level were observed.

Orthogonal Optimization Design of the Compound Impeller for a New Type of Dishwasher Pump

Abstract:A new type of dishwasher pump without a pipeline system was invented for the first time to form an original sink-type dishwasher avoiding the accumulation of dirt in the hydraulic system. In order to improve the hydraulic performance of this new type of dishwasher pump with twin-volute passive rotation driven by a compound impeller, an orthogonal optimal design method was first introduced to optimize the compound impeller composed of axial cascades and radial blades. Six geometric parameters were selected as the main factors to design the orthogonal table L18(36). All impeller models were manufactured via high-precision 3D printing and tested to determine the optimal solution. Firstly, the hydraulic performance was measured using a specially designed test bench under the assumption of static-volute conditions. Then, the optimization scheme was verified in real machine experiments under the rotating-volute condition, and numerical calculations were used to assess the performance improvement due to optimization under the static- and rotating-volute conditions. The results show that the main factors affecting the pump head and efficiency are impeller outlet diameter D2 and profile line L. The optimized pump head and efficiency are significantly higher than those of the original scheme. Furthermore, the entropy production of each flow passage component of this new type of dishwasher pump is significantly reduced after optimization. Under the static-volute condition, the scheme obtained using the range analysis displays an increase of 0.3 m in the pump head and 2.99% in pump efficiency. Under the rotating-volute condition, the optimization scheme is also effective (pump head increased by 0.54 m, and pump efficiency by 7.46%). At the same time, the passive rotation speed of the twin-volute increases from 60 rpm to 70 rpm, verifying that both the optimization method is reliable and can be used when developing and optimizing dishwasher pumps.

Dishwasher improvement at ASKO - Developing a simplified test method to determine the influence of spray arm speed and pressure

Abstract:This thesis report describes how a dishwasher was modified and used as a test rig together with a new test method to find the relation between cleaning performance and the rotation speed of the spray arms as well as the water pressure. All tests were conducted using an ASKO D5900 dishwasher. First off, the tests were planned in detail. To ensure that the tests would be reliable and not overly redundant proper Design of Experiments methods were used. A simplified test method was developed that would be easier and faster to use than the standard tests currently used by dishwasher developers. When the test rig was to be built several concepts for changing rotation speed and water pressure were generated through brainstorming sessions and the use of morphological matrices based on system design thinking. Kesselring matrices were used during the final selection. The selected concepts were further developed to suit an actual implementation in the dishwasher. The test rig was built and used to implement the cleaning performance test. Several pre-tests were conducted to evaluate the test method and data analysis method. The first test was implemented and showed a trend of relation between cleaning performance and rotation speed and pressure. Performance increased as the rotation speed decreased and the pressure increased, but due to large deviations the results were not found to be reliable. The deviation of the results was too large to be conclusive by statistical standards. This was the reason for a second test implementation where influencing variables like time and temperature were more accurately controlled. Stable results were acquired during the second test, which supported the results from the first test. The prototype was then tested using European standard dishwasher test methods to determine the external validity of the test method at ASKOs facilities in Vara. Sound tests were also conducted. Finally, some tests were done at a higher pressure level using a stronger pump in order to see if the trend was continuing at even higher pressure levels. The test results showed that performance increases with higher water pressure and lower rotation speed. The cost of higher pressure is an increasing sound level. The test method proved to be reliable.

Abstract:As the regulations and consumer preferences in Europe tend to favor more energy-efficient household appliances, companies have to find innovative ways of saving electric energy during the operations of those appliances. One such method in dishwasher design is to reduce heat energy loss to the surrounding environment and reuse heat energy during the washing cycle, thus minimizing the time that heaters are operating. In this study, a numerical simulation involving computational fluid dynamics is implemented to speed up the iterative process of improving efficiency. The washing cycle has been simplified to include only the most critical moments of dishwasher work, and non-important components have been excluded. A workflow of simulations and numerical methods employed for this task is presented. The numerical simulations are compared with real-life experiments to assess their accuracy and verify boundary conditions. Geometric and washing cycle improvements are compared with the base design and show satisfactory results.

Abstract:This article presents a design scheme for a dishwashing system based on loofahs and develops a prototype. The dishwashing system contains seven parts: the transceiver device, the slag removing device, the main cleaning device, flushing device, the drying and the sterilizing device, the water supply and drainage device and the monitoring interface. We use PLC timing to control the transceiver device, which can save labor and reduce costs. The slag removing device cleans the dishes roughly using loofah brush heads. The main cleaning device contains a rotary cleaning part and a conveying cleaning part. Both of them are easy to disassemble and update; the PLC module controls the block cylinder to fix the dish, and then the conveyor belt drives the loofah cleaning belt to clean the bottom of dish, at the mean time the loofah brush head cleans the groove of dish. The flushing device rinses dishes with tap water. The drying and sterilizing device consists of a turnover part, a water absorption part and a heat drying part. Finally, we can get dry and sterile dishes. The water supply and drainage device comprises a sewage pipe, a water circulation pipe and a waste heat utilization pipeline, and it realizes the water circulation of the whole dishwashing system. The monitoring interface ensures the cleaning effect of the dishwashing system. Compared with the traditional dishwashers, the dishwashing system in this paper has remarkable energy-saving and emission reduction effects, along with great market space and promotion value at the same time.

Abstract:To improve the hydraulic performance of a new type of dishwasher pump and solve the multi-parameter optimization problem, a genetic algorithm was introduced to optimize the special design of the twin-volute structure. Six curvature radii of the twin-volute structure were defined as the optimization parameters, and 100 groups of design samples were generated based on the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method. The pump head and the efficiency were taken as the optimization objectives, i.e., to improve the efficiency as much as possible while ensuring that the head would not be lower than 2 m. The important parameters were identified via sensitivity analysis, and the optimization problem was solved in detail by using the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The results showed that the external profile of the first to the fourth section of the twin-volute structure had the most significant effect on the pump head and efficiency. The response surface method (RSM) was used to select the intervals of optimization, and a comparative simulation of the pump schemes before and after optimization was performed. The head curve did not significantly change before and after optimization. By contrast, the efficiency of the dishwasher pump significantly increased, showing an increase of 2.7% under the design point. Compared with the original model, the impeller of the optimal model pump had a lower overall distribution of turbulent kinetic energy, reduced the vorticity in the twin-volute inlet area, and increased the pressure in the flow channel. Our research results confirm that the combination of RSM and MOGA can effectively solve the problem of optimization for new types of dishwashers and can provide a reference for the development of subsequent hydraulic models.

Abstract:The design and manufacture of automatic conveyor-based dishwashers is a complex process that involves the integration of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components. The main objective of this project is to create a low cost, highly efficient, water and detergent saving based dishwasher that can handle a bulk number of dishes in a very short time. Dishwashers are designed to transport dishes automatically using a conveyor belt system. The system includes the flow of water and detergents to ensure optimal cleaning and hygiene. The manufacturing process includes material selection, creation of detailed computer aided design (CAD) models, and machine construction using precision manufacturing techniques. The result is a reliable and efficient dishwasher that can meet the needs of commercial kitchens and other high-volume food service operations. The main goal of semi-automatic dishwashers is to reduce human effort and time with an innovative simple design. The dishwasher design has been made environment friendly as well by introducing reusing of water and less consumption of detergent. The proposed dishwasher in this work is a new concept that does all the work of a traditional dishwashing i.e.; plate placing, detergent spraying, sparkling water in one wash cycle. In addition to that the dishwasher model is composed of AC gear Motors, Universal Motor, Conveyor chain and a central controller for the control of process and time delaying. This work also presents the benefits of water, time and detergent saving by using the proposed dishwasher as compared to conventional dishwashing.

Abstract:The effect of temperature, soil and surface type on cleaning performance was investigated using newly developed cleaning rig in which the flow characteristic of cleaning solution was a falling film generated by impinging jet. The most common types of foods in dishwashers (spinach, egg yolk, milk, potato puree, minced meat, black tea, and margarine) were studied as soils and the main materials used in household utensils such as stainless steel, glass, porcelain, and plastic were tested as cleaning surfaces. The physicochemical properties of food components and surfaces had a major role in the development of soil-soil associations and the soil-surface interfacial interactions. It was observed that the strength of those interactions was determinant factor of soil removal mechanism which could be resulted in either by cohesive failure or both adhesive and cohesive failure. Regardless of soil type, when the temperature increased, better cleaning scores were obtained since the cleaning solution easily penetrated into soil which led to swelling of soil and reducing interfacial forces. Cleaning performance of soils was modeled using the results of 140 experimental points in Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The optimum temperature was determined for all surface-soil combinations as 56 °C, at which the cleaning scores were the closest to the cleaning performance at 70 °C. Moreover, it was observed that the experimental results of the cleaning at the optimum temperature were similar or better than the values estimated with the model. This study would be useful to develop an understanding on governing factors of cleaning which can be used in optimization of the cleaning process for energy efficient dishwashers.

Abstract:Optimizing the energy efficiency of household appliances is crucial to appliance manufacturers, energy suppliers, governments and, almost importantly, consumers. For the reliable cleaning of normally soiled dishes, consumers can save energy by using Eco-programs instead of Intensive- or Auto-programs, but this means that they have to accept cleaning times of up to 4 h. Consequently, the acceptance for these programs is not very high, despite consumers' high willingness to save energy and water. Short-cycles that run for less than 55 min and use equal to less energy on average than Eco-programs have a high consumer potential. However, according to manufacturers, these are rather designed for lightly soiled or pre-treated dishes. Considering the Sinner's circle, the cleaning result depends on the interaction of temperature, time, mechanics and chemistry, so we investigated the extent to which using a commercially available detergent, thus fully exploiting the "chemistry" component of the Sinner's circle, can save time, temperature, water and, most importantly, energy in the end. Our results show that there are Short-program combinations using a commercially available detergent that reliably clean normally soiled dishes in less than 55 min and typically 30–40 min with significantly lower energy consumption than average Eco-cycles.

Abstract:Energy efficiency of a dishwasher has been mostly affected by performance of a dry duct. Thus, air flows in a dry duct, especially depending on its shape, should be investigated to improve the power efficiency when operating the machine. In order to analyze the phenomena experimentally, a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) has been used, and then the flow inside the dry duct has been predicted by the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in this study to determine the appropriate design. The determined shape has been confirmed by the developed flow visualization technique so that the energy efficiency of the dishwasher can be improved.

Abstract:The present invention discloses a waterway circulation system for dish-washing machines, which includes washing chamber, first filtration unit, washing liquid circulation unit, first storage unit, second filtration unit, second storage unit, washing liquid discharging unit. In the circulation system of this invention, when the residue reach the first filtration unit, enter into blade position, and they are smashed by the blade. Part of the bigger residue will stay in the first storage unit, and directly be discharged of the dish-washing machine when the wash liquid discharging unit acts; some smaller residue will enter into main watercourse through filtration net of water inlet. Additionally, second water outlet is provided on the main watercourse, mixture of residue and water enter into the close area formed by filtration grid and filtration grid cover, then the residue flows into the second storage unit of wash liquid discharging unit through the residue collecting mouth, and will be evacuated when discharging water.

Abstract:Size-based particle filtration has become indispensable in numerous biomedical and environmental applications. In this study, bioinspired by the filter-feeding mechanism (lobe filtration) of manta rays, we designed a U-shaped biomimetic gill rake filter that combined lobe filtration and Dean flow to filter monodisperse suspensions, bi-disperse suspensions and yeast cells. Compared with other equipment using the inertial focusing technology, our equipment can perform high-throughput (up to 8 mL min-1) and high-efficiency filtration of particles (maximum filtration efficiencies of 96.08% and 97.14% for 10 and 15 mu m monodisperse suspensions at the optimum flow rate of 6 mL min-1). The complex velocity field of the micro-fluidic flow within the filter is numerically simulated, and in combination with experiments, a threshold for the flow rate is identified. When the inlet flow rate exceeds the threshold value, the efficiency of particle filtration is increased rapidly. Afterwards, by analysing the filtration mechanism, we develop three novel filtration processes. The equilibrium positions of the particles and yeast cells in the main channel are close to the outer wall at high flow rate, which diminishes the likelihood of particles and yeast cells entering the side channel. This configuration establishes a self-cleaning mechanism, ensuring prolonged and efficient operation of the filter with high-throughput processing. Furthermore, the influence of the filter lobe angle and channel width on the filtration efficiency and outlet flow rate ratio are explored, and an optimisation plan is prepared. Size-based particle filtration has become indispensable in numerous biomedical and environmental applications.
Design Optimization of Mechanical Valves in Dishwashers Based on the Minimization of Pressure Losses

Abstract:Energy savings, albeit very small, are of great importance for devices whose use has become indispensable. In this study, an optimization based on sustainability and energy saving was aimed at designing the valve used in a white goods company's mass production of dishwashers. One significant factor that affects the overall efficiency of a dishwasher is pressure loss within the mechanical valve system. By optimizing the system, it is possible to minimize pressure loss and increase overall efficiency. To this end, 4th-order Bézier curves, which are used to model the blades of the impeller, were obtained using MATLAB R2023a software. Using Bézier curves, solid models of impellers with different blade profiles and numbers were created with SOLIDWORKS 2021 software. Fifty different models with six different blade numbers and five different materials were considered. In the numerical analyses, pressure losses were determined using ANSYS Fluent 2023R2 software. In addition to numerical analysis, blades were produced using the additive manufacturing method, and outlet pressures were measured experimentally. The experimental results were compared with the computational fluid dynamics analysis findings to evaluate the performance of different impeller designs. To determine the optimal design, the design of experiments and response optimizer approaches are applied, which enables the systematic evaluation of different design parameters. Furthermore, using numerical results, an artificial neural network model was created, and efficiency was predicted for the optimum parameters. Experimental and numerical results show that the optimum blade design enables the least pressure loss.

Abstract:Competition remains fierce within the dishwasher industry, mirroring the ongoing rivalry in all household appliance sectors. The influence of fresh regulations and advancements in technology has spurred a multitude of research endeavors. In the context of household dishwashers, it is widely recognized that the primary focal points are centered on washing efficiency, drying capabilities, water consumption, and energy efficiency. The effectiveness of the hydraulic system within the machine plays a pivotal role in determining its washing prowess, water usage, and energy performance. This research focuses on the examination of the geometry of the diverter element's cover within the hydraulic system of a dishwasher. The diverter and its associated cover, crucial components of the hydraulic circuit, underwent a comprehensive analysis utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Subsequent to the analysis, efforts were made to enhance their performance, encompassing both experimental and numerical approaches. As a result of optimizing the diverter cover's geometry, a notable reduction of 26 ml in water volume within the reservoir was achieved, along with a substantial improvement in pressure loss, amounting to 20 mbar. Subsequent tests conducted with the improved design showcased a remarkable increase in flow rate, measuring 8.1% at 2400 pump revolutions per minute and 8.9% at 2800 pump revolutions per minute.

Abstract:Abstract Open adsorption systems using water as adsorbate, zeolite as adsorbent and air as heat and mass carrier can be used for heating, cooling and thermal energy storage (TES). In an adsorption cycle air is dehumidified, so drying processes are a promising field of application. The objective of the work presented was to reduce the energy consumption of a dishwasher by means of an open adsorption system. The water heating phase of the main washing cycle has been used to desorb a packed bed of zeolites. The common water heating phase before the drying of the dishes has been omitted and replaced by an adsorption phase in which the dishes are dried by hot air. In this context the adsorption system was used as a thermally driven heat pump and a thermal energy storage system. The energy consumption is reduced by 25 % compared to a conventional dishwasher.

Abstract:To reduce particle accumulation on a traditional planar-linear screen, a novel screen with sliding fingers and ladders was designed by numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. The dispersion behaviors of particles under the action of sliding finger and ladder were analyzed using the CFD-DEM (Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method). The effects of traditional and novel screens on the airflow distribution, particle motion and particle dispersion were investigated. The results indicated that the novel screen enhanced the airflow velocity and discharge in the traditional cleaning unit. This screen made the grains penetrate the sliding fingers, and the impurities were thrown behind the screen. It improved the particle accumulation on the traditional screen. The comprehensive dispersion degree of particles perpendicular to the entire novel screen surface was 8.14% higher than that with the traditional screen. The comprehensive dispersion degree of particles along the entire novel screen surface was higher by 6.87%.
Design optimization of the porous baffle in a disinfection contact tank for high efficiency

Abstract:Disinfection contact tanks facilitated in urban water treatment plants suffer from low hydraulic and mixing efficiencies, which may result in high chemical and energy usage to yield the required disinfection levels. Porous baffle design can effectively remedy the adverse effects of solid baffles by creating momentum exchange between neighbouring chambers with controllable porosity in the flow direction. Although previously developed baffle has been proved to enhance the efficiency of the contact system, porous baffle design has not yet been optimized. A simulation-optimization framework is developed by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and employed for single and multi-objective optimization of the porosity. The optimized design of tripartite baffle improved hydraulic and mixing efficiencies by 50% and 56%, respectively. The integrated optimization framework developed in this study can effectively be used for the multi-objective optimization of porous baffle in the design of disinfection contact tanks.
