Abstract:Ultramarathon runners are exposed to a high number of impact shocks and to severe neuromuscular fatigue. Runners may manage mechanical stress and muscle fatigue by changing their running kinematics. Our purposes were to study (i) the effects of a 110-km mountain ultramarathon (MUM) on tibial shock acceleration and lower limb kinematics, and (ii) whether kinematic changes are modulated according to the severity of neuromuscular fatigue. Twenty-three runners participated in the study. Pre- and post-MUM, neuromuscular tests were performed to assess knee extensor (KE) and plantar flexor (PF) central and peripheral fatigue, and a treadmill running bouts was completed during which step frequency, peak acceleration, median frequency and impact frequency content were measured from tibial acceleration, as well as foot-to-treadmill, tibia-to-treadmill, and ankle flexion angles at initial contact, and ankle range of motion using video analysis. Large neuromuscular fatigue, including peripheral changes and deficits in voluntary activation, was observed in KE and PF. MVC decrements of ~35% for KE and of ~28% for PF were noted. Among biomechanical variables, step frequency increased by ~2.7% and the ankle range of motion decreased by ~4.1% post-MUM. Runners adopting a non rearfoot strike pre-MUM adopted a less plantarflexed foot strike pattern post-MUM while those adopting a rearfoot strike pre-MUM tended to adopt a less dorsiflexed foot strike pattern post-MUM. Positive correlations were observed between percent changes in peripheral PF fatigue and the ankle range of motion. Peripheral PF fatigue was also significantly correlated to both percent changes in step frequency and the ankle angle at contact. This study suggests that in a fatigued state, ultratrail runners use compensatory/protective adjustments leading to a flatter foot landing and this is done in a fatigue dose-dependent manner. This strategy may aim at minimizing the overall load applied to the musculoskeletal system, including impact shock and muscle stretch.
High-intensity running and plantar-flexor fatigability and plantar-pressure distribution in adolescent runners

Abstract:Context: Fatigue-induced alterations in foot mechanics may lead to structural overload and injury. Objectives: To investigate how a high-intensity running exercise to exhaustion modifies ankle plantar-flexor and dorsiflexor strength and fatigability, as well as plantar-pressure distribution in adolescent runners. Design: Controlled laboratory study. Setting: Academy research laboratory. Patients or other participants: Eleven male adolescent distance runners (age = 16.9 ± 2.0 years, height = 170.6 ± 10.9 cm, mass = 54.6 ± 8.6 kg) were tested. Intervention(s): All participants performed an exhausting run on a treadmill. An isokinetic plantar-flexor and dorsiflexor maximal-strength test and a fatigue test were performed before and after the exhausting run. Plantar-pressure distribution was assessed at the beginning and end of the exhausting run. Main outcome measure(s): We recorded plantar-flexor and dorsiflexor peak torques and calculated the fatigue index. Plantar-pressure measurements were recorded 1 minute after the start of the run and before exhaustion. Plantar variables (ie, mean area, contact time, mean pressure, relative load) were determined for 9 selected regions. Results: Isokinetic peak torques were similar before and after the run in both muscle groups, whereas the fatigue index increased in plantar flexion (28.1%; P = .01) but not in dorsiflexion. For the whole foot, mean pressure decreased from 1 minute to the end (-3.4%; P = .003); however, mean area (9.5%; P = .005) and relative load (7.2%; P = .009) increased under the medial midfoot, and contact time increased under the central forefoot (8.3%; P = .01) and the lesser toes (8.9%; P = .008). Conclusions: Fatigue resistance in the plantar flexors declined after a high-intensity running bout performed by adolescent male distance runners. This phenomenon was associated with increased loading under the medial arch in the fatigued state but without any excessive pronation.
Quantifying Active and Passive Stiffness in Plantar Flexor Muscles Following Intermittent Maximal Isometric Contractions Using Shear Wave Elastography

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed: (i) to investigate the impact of fatigue, triggered by maximal isometric contraction exercises, on the active and passive stiffness of plantar flexors (PF), and (ii) to examine the relationship between changes in mechanical parameters and neuromuscular alterations after fatigue. Methods: A healthy cohort (n = 12; age = 27.3 ± 5.5 y; BMI = 24.4 ± 2.35 kg/m²) was instructed to perform 60 isometric contractions, each lasting 4 s with a 1-s rest interval, using an ergometer. Several measures were taken before and after the fatigue protocol. First, the stiffness of the PF-tendon complex (PFC) was quantified during passive ankle mobilization both during and after the fatigue protocol using the ergometer. Additionally, from shear wave elastography, the active and passive stiffness of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) were measured during passive ankle mobilization and isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), respectively. Finally, the peak torque and the rate of torque development (RFD) of PF were assessed during the MVC using the ergometer. Ankle muscle activities (surface electromyograph [SEMG]) were recorded during all evaluations using electromyography. Results: After the fatigue protocol, the results revealed a decline in active stiffness, peak torque of PF, RFD and SEMG activity of the GM (p < 0.001). Furthermore, significant correlation was identified between the decrease of the peak torque of PF and the active stiffness of the GM (r = 0.6; p < 0.05). A decrease in the PFC stiffness (p < 0.001) and a decrease in the shear modulus of the GM at 20° (p < 0.001) were also observed. Conclusion: Isometric fatiguing exercises modify the mechanical properties of both the contractile and elastic components. Notably, decreases in both passive and active stiffness may be critical for athletes, as these changes could potentially increase the risk of injury.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of running-induced acute fatigue on the homeostasis of the body is essential to mitigate the adverse effects and optimize positive adaptations to training. Fatigue is a multifactorial phenomenon, which influences biomechanical, physiological, and psychological facets. This work aimed to assess the evolution of these three facets with acute fatigue during a half-marathon. 13 recreational runners were equipped with one inertial measurement unit (IMU) on each foot, one combined global navigation satellite system-IMU-electrocardiogram sensor on the chest, and an Android smartphone equipped with an audio recording application. Spatio-temporal parameters for the running gait, along with the heart rate, its variability and complexity were computed using validated algorithms. Perceived fatigability was assessed using the rating-of-fatigue (ROF) scale at every 10 min of the race. The data was split into eight equal segments, corresponding to at least one ROF value per segment, and only level running parts were retained for analysis. During the race, contact time, duty factor, and trunk anteroposterior acceleration increased, and the foot strike angle and vertical stiffness decreased significantly. Heart rate showed a progressive increase, while the metrics for heart rate variability and complexity decreased during the race. The biomechanical parameters showed a significant alteration even with a small change in perceived fatigue, whereas the heart rate dynamics altered at higher changes. When divided into two groups, the slower runners presented a higher change in heart rate dynamics throughout the race than the faster runners; they both showed similar trends for the gait parameters. When tested for linear and non-linear correlations, heart rate had the highest association with biomechanical parameters, while the trunk anteroposterior acceleration had the lowest association with heart rate dynamics. These results indicate the ability of faster runners to better judge their physiological limits and hint toward a higher sensitivity of perceived fatigue to neuromuscular changes in the running gait. This study highlights measurable influences of acute fatigue, which can be studied only through concurrent measurement of biomechanical, physiological, and psychological facets of running in real-world conditions.

Abstract:Understanding the changes in running mechanics caused by fatigue is essential to assess its impact on athletic performance. Changes in running biomechanics after constant speed conditions are well documented, but the adaptive responses after a maximal incremental test are unknown. We compared the spatiotemporal, joint kinematics, elastic mechanism, and external work parameters before and after a maximal incremental treadmill test. Eighteen recreational runners performed 2-minute runs at 8 km·h-1 before and after a maximal incremental test on a treadmill. Kinematics, elastic parameters, and external work were determined using the OpenCap and OpenSim software. We did not find differences in spatiotemporal parameters and elastic parameters (mechanical work, ankle, and knee motion range) between premaximal and postmaximal test conditions. After the maximal test, the runners flexed their hips more at contact time (19.4°-20.6°, P = .013) and presented a larger range of pelvis rotation at the frontal plane (10.3°-11.4°, P = .002). The fatigue applied in the test directly affects pelvic movements; however, it does not change the lower limb motion or the spatiotemporal and mechanical work parameters in recreational runners. A larger frontal plane motion of the pelvis deserves attention due to biomechanical risk factors associated with injuries.

Abstract:Due to their excellent specific mechanical properties, closed cell elastomeric foams are the main element in the soles of running shoes to absorb repetitive shocks from strides and to release a maximum of the absorbed energy. However, these cellular materials are gradually damaged. To enhance their mechanical durability by slowing their damage kinetics, it is critical to understand their mechanical behaviour in fatigue. The objective of this work is thus to clarify the link between the microstructure and the fatigue properties of five commercial elastomeric foams used in the midsoles of running shoes. The 3D cellular structures of each foam were finely analysed using X-ray microtomography. Foam samples were then subjected to cyclic compression which were close to running conditions. During cycling, samples exhibited a rapid densification associated with noticeable decreases of (i) the stress levels required to deform them as well as (ii) the cushioning and (iii) the rebound properties. We show that the two midsoles filled with micro-sized mineral fillers present the highest specific mechanical properties during the first compression cycle and during fatigue. However, their damage kinetics and rebound properties could probably be improved by tuning the fillers-matrix compatibility. The lightest foam, being very porous and presenting process-induced tortuous cell walls, is the best cushioning system but exhibits high damage kinetics. The densest foam presents poor specific mechanical properties, but very slow damage kinetics. Its double hierarchical architecture probably prevents the occurrence of micro-cracks in the cell walls.
The influence of midsole horizontal and vertical deformation on soft tissue vibrations and bone acceleration during running

Abstract:Increased midsole deformation can limit exposure to high impact and vibration magnitudes while running. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of shoes eliciting different midsole deformation on ground reaction forces, heel impact, soft tissue vibrations and bone vibrations. Forty-eight runners performed a 5-min running task on an instrumented treadmill at a self-selected pace with four different shoes. Midsole horizontal and vertical deformations were quantified with relative displacement of seven reflective markers placed on the midsole of the shoe and tracked by eight optoelectronic cameras. Heel impacts, soft tissue and bone vibrations of lower leg muscle groups, sacrum and head were quantified with tri-axial accelerometers. Continuous wavelet transform was used to assess magnitude and frequency of the acceleration data. Linear mixed models and non-parametric one-dimensional regressions between the accelerometer data and shoe deformation were performed. Greater horizontal and vertical deformations decreased the magnitude (up to 4.6% per mm) and frequency (up to 0.6 Hz per mm) of soft tissue vibrations and bone accelerations. Accelerations of the heel, tibia, gastrocnemius medialis and vastus lateralis were more influenced than the sacrum and head. Increasing midsole deformation could therefore mitigate the risk of injury, while increasing running comfort and smoothness.
Biomechanical Response of the Lower Extremity to Running-Induced Acute Fatigue: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Objective: To investigate (i) typical protocols used in research on biomechanical response to running-induced fatigue, (ii) the effect of sport-induced acute fatigue on the biomechanics of running and functional tests, and (iii) the consistency of analyzed parameter trends across different protocols. Methods: Scopus, Web of Science, Pubmed, and IEEE databases were searched using terms identified with the Population, Interest and Context (PiCo) framework. Studies were screened following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and appraised using the methodological index for non-randomized studies MINORS scale. Only experimental studies with at least 10 participants, which evaluated fatigue during and immediately after the fatiguing run were included. Each study was summarized to record information about the protocol and parameter trends. Summary trends were computed for each parameter based on the results found in individual studies. Results: Of the 68 included studies, most were based on in-lab (77.9%) protocols, endpoint measurements (75%), stationary measurement systems (76.5%), and treadmill environment (54.4%) for running. From the 42 parameters identified in response to acute fatigue, flight time, contact time, knee flexion angle at initial contact, trunk flexion angle, peak tibial acceleration, CoP velocity during balance test showed an increasing behavior and cadence, vertical stiffness, knee extension force during MVC, maximum vertical ground reaction forces, and CMJ height showed a decreasing trend across different fatigue protocols. Conclusion: This review presents evidence that running-induced acute fatigue influences almost all the included biomechanical parameters, with crucial influence from the exercise intensity and the testing environment. Results indicate an important gap in literature caused by the lack of field studies with continuous measurement during outdoor running activities. To address this gap, we propose recommendations for the use of wearable inertial sensors.

CAN RUNNERS PERCEIVE CHANGES IN HEEL CUSHIONING AS THE SHOE AGES WITH INCREASED MILEAGE?

Abstract:Background: For those runners who utilize footwear and have a rearfoot strike pattern, the durability of the midsole heel region has been shown to deteriorate as shoe mileage increases. Purpose: The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to determine if the runner can self-report changes in heel cushioning properties of the midsole after an extended period of distance running, 2) to determine if force and plantar pressures measured in the heel region of the midsole using a capacitance sensor insole change after running 640 km, and 3) to determine if a durometer could be used clinically to objectively measure changes in the hardness of the material in the heel region of the midsole. Study design: Cross-sectional Study. Methods: Fifteen recreational runners voluntarily consented to participate and were provided with a new pair of running shoes. Each participant's running style was observed and classified as having a rearfoot strike pattern. Inclusion criteria included running at least 24 km per week, experience running on a treadmill, no history of lower extremity congenital or traumatic deformity, or acute injury six months prior to the start of the study. The ability of each participant to self-perceive changes in shoe cushioning, comfort and fit was assessed using the Footwear Comfort Assessment Tool (FCAT). In-shoe plantar pressures and vertical forces were assessed using a capacitance sensor insole while runners ran over a 42-meter indoor runway. A Shore A durometer was used to measure the hardness of the midsole in the heel region. All measures were completed at baseline (zero km) and after running 160, 320, 480, and 640 km. In addition to descriptive statistics, a repeated measures analysis of variance was used to determine if the FCAT, pressures, forces, or midsole hardness changed because of increased running mileage. Result: While plantar pressures and vertical forces were significantly reduced in the midsole heel region, none of the runners self-reported a significant reduction in heel cushioning based on FCAT scores after running 640 km. The use of a durometer provided an objective measure of the changes in the heel region of the midsole that closely matched the reductions observed in pressure and force values. Conclusion: The results indicated that runners who have a rearfoot strike pattern will have a 16% to 33% reduction in the amount of cushioning in the heel region of the midsole after running 480 km. Although there were significant reductions in heel cushioning, the experienced recreational runners in this study were not able to self-perceive these changes after running 640 km. In addition, the use of a durometer provides a quick and accurate way to assess changes in the hardness of the heel region of the midsole as running mileage increases. Increased vertical impact forces and altered running mechanics with softer midsole shoes

Abstract:To date it has been thought that shoe midsole hardness does not affect vertical impact peak forces during running. This conclusion is based partially on results from experimental data using homogeneous samples of participants that found no difference in vertical impact peaks when running in shoes with different midsole properties. However, it is currently unknown how apparent joint stiffness is affected by shoe midsole hardness. An increase in apparent joint stiffness could result in a harder landing, which should result in increased vertical impact peaks during running. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of shoe midsole hardness on apparent ankle and knee joint stiffness and the associated vertical ground reaction force for age and sex subgroups during heel-toe running. 93 runners (male and female) aged 16-75 years ran at 3.33 ± 0.15 m/s on a 30 m-long runway with soft, medium and hard midsole shoes. The vertical impact peak increased as the shoe midsole hardness decreased (mean(SE); soft: 1.70BW(0.03), medium: 1.64BW(0.03), hard: 1.54BW(0.03)). Similar results were found for the apparent ankle joint stiffness where apparent stiffness increased as the shoe midsole hardness decreased (soft: 2.08BWm/º x 100 (0.05), medium: 1.92 BWm/º x 100 (0.05), hard: 1.85 BWm/º x 100 (0.05)). Apparent knee joint stiffness increased for soft (1.06BWm/º x 100 (0.04)) midsole compared to the medium (0.95BWm/º x 100 (0.04)) and hard (0.96BWm/º x 100 (0.04)) midsoles for female participants. The results from this study confirm that shoe midsole hardness can have an effect on vertical impact force peaks and that this may be connected to the hardness of the landing. The results from this study may provide useful information regarding the development of cushioning guidelines for running shoes.
The Effects of Increased Midsole Bending Stiffness of Sport Shoes on Muscle-Tendon Unit Shortening and Shortening Velocity: a Randomised Crossover Trial in Recreational Male Runners

Abstract:Background: Individual compliances of the foot-shoe interface have been suggested to store and release elastic strain energy via ligamentous and tendinous structures or by increased midsole bending stiffness (MBS), compression stiffness, and resilience of running shoes. It is unknown, however, how these compliances interact with each other when the MBS of a running shoe is increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate how structures of the foot-shoe interface are influenced during running by changes to the MBS of sport shoes. Methods: A randomised crossover trial was performed, where 13 male, recreational runners ran on an instrumented treadmill at 3.5 m·s-1 while motion capture was used to estimate foot arch, plantar muscle-tendon unit (pMTU), and shank muscle-tendon unit (sMTU) behaviour in two conditions: (1) control shoe and (2) the same shoe with carbon fibre plates inserted to increase the MBS. Results: Running in a shoe with increased MBS resulted in less deformation of the arch (mean ± SD; stiff, 7.26 ± 1.78°; control, 8.84 ± 2.87°; p ≤ 0.05), reduced pMTU shortening (stiff, 4.39 ± 1.59 mm; control, 6.46 ± 1.42 mm; p ≤ 0.01), and lower shortening velocities of the pMTU (stiff, - 0.21 ± 0.03 m·s-1; control, - 0.30 ± 0.05 m·s-1; p ≤ 0.01) and sMTU (stiff, - 0.35 ± 0.08 m·s-1; control, - 0.45 ± 0.11 m·s-1; p ≤ 0.001) compared to a control condition. The positive and net work performed at the arch and pMTU, and the net work at the sMTU were significantly lower in the stiff compared to the control condition. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that if a compliance of the foot-shoe interface is altered during running (e.g. by increasing the MBS of a shoe), the mechanics of other structures change as well. This could potentially affect long-distance running performance.
Acute intense fatigue does not modify the effect of EVA and TPU custom foot orthoses on running mechanics, running economy and perceived comfort

Abstract:Abstract We determined whether fatigue modifies the effect of custom foot orthoses manufactured from ethyl-vinyl acetate (EVA) and expanded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials, both compared to standardized footwear (CON), on running mechanics, running economy, and perceived comfort. Eighteen well-trained, males ran on an instrumented treadmill for 6 min at the speed corresponding to their first ventilatory threshold (13.8 ± 1.1 km/h) in three footwear conditions (CON, EVA, and TPU). Immediately after completion of a repeated-sprints exercise (8 × 5 s treadmill sprints, rest = 25 s), these run tests were replicated. Running mechanics, running economy and perceived comfort were determined. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA [condition (CON, EVA, and TPU) × fatigue (fresh and fatigued)] were conducted. Flight time shortened ( P = 0.026), peak braking ( P = 0.016) and push-off ( P = 0.032) forces decreased and vertical stiffness increased ( P = 0.014) from before to after the repeated-sprint exercise, independent of footwear condition. There was a global fatigue-induced deterioration in running economy (− 1.6 ± 0.4%; P < 0.001). There was no significant condition × fatigue [except mean loading rate ( P = 0.046)] for the large majority of biomechanical, cardio-respiratory [except minute ventilation ( P = 0.020) and breathing frequency ( P = 0.019)] and perceived comfort variables. Acute intense fatigue does not modify the effect of custom foot orthoses with different resilience characteristics on running mechanics, running economy and perceived comfort.

Abstract:In a recent randomised trial investigating running shoe cushioning, injury risk was greater in recreational runners who trained in the shoe version with greater cushioning stiffness (Stiff) compared to those using the Soft version. However, vertical impact peak force (VIPF) was lower in the Stiff version. To investigate further the mechanisms involved in the protective effect of greater cushioning, the present study used an intra-subject design and analysed the differences in running kinematics and kinetics between the Stiff and Soft shoe versions on a subsample of 41 runners from the previous trial. Data were recorded in the two shoe conditions using an instrumented treadmill at 10 km.h-1. VIPF was confirmed to be lower in the Stiff version compared to the Soft version (1.39 ± 0.25 vs. 1.50 ± 0.25 BW, respectively; p = 0.009, d = 0.42), but not difference was observed in vertical loading rate (p = 0.255 and 0.897 for vertical average and instantaneous loading rate, respectively). Ankle eversion maximal velocity was not different (p = 0.099), but the Stiff version induced greater ankle negative work (-0.55 ± 0.09 vs. -0.52 ± 0.10 J.kg-1; p = 0.009, d = 0.32), maximal ankle negative power (-7.21 ± 1.90 vs. -6.96 ± 1.92 W.kg-1; p = 0.037, d = 0.13) and maximal hip extension moment (1.25 ± 0.32 vs.1.18 ± 0.30 N.m.kg-1; p = 0.009, d = 0.22). Our results suggest that the Stiff shoe version is related to increased mechanical burden for the musculoskeletal system, especially around the ankle joint.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03115437.

Effects of Foot-Strike Pattern on Neuromuscular Function During a Prolonged Graded Run

Abstract:Purpose: To study whether, during typical-level running, non-rear-foot strikers (non-RFS) or rear-foot strikers (RFS) presented a similar or different extent of neuromuscular fatigue after a prolonged graded run. Methods: Sixteen experienced male trail runners (8 non-RFS and 8 RFS) performed a 2.5-hour treadmill graded running exercise. Before and after exercise, neuromuscular tests were performed to assess neuromuscular fatigue of the plantar flexors. Biomechanical gait parameters were acquired with an instrumented treadmill, and electromyographic activity of the lower-limb muscles was collected as an index of muscle activation. Results: There were no significant time × foot strike interactions for neuromuscular (all P ≥ .742), muscle activation (all P ≥ .157), or biomechanical (all P ≥ .096) variables. Conclusions: A dominant level running foot-strike pattern did not directly affect the extent of neuromuscular fatigue during a prolonged graded run. This suggests that no ideal running foot-strike pattern exists to minimize neuromuscular fatigue during prolonged-duration races wherein cumulative uphill and downhill segments are high, such as in trail running.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the sensitivity of several movement features during running to exhaustion in a subject-specific setup adopting a cross-sectional design and a machine learning approach. Thirteen recreational runners, that systematically trained and competed, performed an exhaustive running protocol on an instrumented treadmill. Respiratory data were collected to establish the second ventilatory threshold (VT2) in order to obtain a reference point regarding the gradual accumulation of fatigue. A machine learning approach was adopted to analyze kinetic and kinematic data recorded for each participant, using a random forest classifier for the region pre and post the second ventilatory threshold. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to explain the models' predictions and to provide insight about the most important variables. The classification accuracy value of the models adopted ranged from 0.853 to 0.962. The most important feature in six out of thirteen participants was the angular range in AP axis of upper trunk C7 (RT APu ) followed by maximum loading rate (RFD maxD ) and the angular range in the LT axis of the C7. SHAP dependence plots also showed an increased dispersion of predictions in stages around the second ventilatory threshold which is consistent with feature interactions. These results showed that each runner used the examined features differently to cope with the increase in fatigue and mitigate its effects in order to maintain a proper motor pattern.

Shoe midsole longitudinal bending stiffness and running economy, joint energy, and EMG

Abstract:Purpose: It has been shown that mechanical energy is dissipated at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint during running and jumping. Furthermore, increasing the longitudinal bending stiffness of the midsole significantly reduced the energy dissipated at the MTP joint and increased jump performance. It was hypothesized that increasing midsole longitudinal bending stiffness would also lead to improvements in running economy. This study investigated the influence of midsole longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy (performance variable) and evaluated the local effects on joint energetics and muscular activity. Methods: Carbon fiber plates were inserted into running shoe midsoles and running economy, joint energy, and electromyographic (EMG) data were collected on 13 subjects. Results: Approximately a 1% metabolic energy savings was observed when subjects ran in a stiff midsole relative to the control midsole. Subjects with a greater body mass had a greater decrease in oxygen consumption rates in the stiff midsole relative to the control midsole condition. The stiffer midsoles showed no significant differences in energy absorption at the MTP joint compared with the control shoe. Finally, no significant changes were observed in muscular activation. Conclusion: Increasing midsole longitudinal bending stiffness led to improvements in running economy, yet the underlying mechanisms that can be attributed to this improvement are still not fully understood.

Abstract:High loading impact associated with heel strikes causes running injuries. This study aimed to investigate how loading impact is affected by midsole hardness and running surface type. Twelve young rear-foot runners ran at a fixed speed along an 18 m runway wearing shoes with different midsole hardness (Asker C-45, C-50, C-55, C-60, from soft to hard) and on two different surfaces (rubber and concrete). We quantified vertical average loading rate (VALR) and vertical impact peak force (VIPF). We conducted midsole × surface repeated-measures ANOVA on loading impact measures, and one-sample t-tests to compare VALR with a threshold value (80 BW·s −1 ). Midsole hardness and surface type mainly affected VALR. Although no significant effect of these variables was observed for VIPF magnitude, there were effects on time to VIPF and steps with VIPF. Several combinations of midsole and surface hardness reduced VALR below 80 BW·s −1 : Asker C-45 with both surfaces, and Asker C-50 with a rubber surface. The combination of softer midsole and surface effectively reduced loading rates as shown by increased time to VIPF and reduced VALR. Combining softer midsole and surface results in the greatest cushioning, which demonstrates the benefit of considering both factors in reducing running injuries.

Effect of fatigue on spontaneous velocity variations in human middle-distance running: use of short-term Fourier transformation

Abstract:Best performances in middle-distance running are characterized by coefficients of variation of the velocity ranging from 1% to 5%. This seems to suggest that running at constant velocity is a strain inducing an increase in physiological variables such as oxygen uptake. This study tested three questions. (l) Does velocity variability during a middle-distance all-out run increase with fatigue? (2) Does velocity variability alter the slow phase of the oxygen kinetic because of small spontaneous recoveries, compared with the same distance run at constant velocity? (3) Is a maintained average velocity over a given distance enhanced by a variable-pace rather than by a constant-pace? Ten long-distance runners performed two series of all-out runs over the distance (previously determined) which they could cover maintaining a velocity equal to 90% of that eliciting maximal oxygen consumption. In the first series ( free-pace) the subjects were asked to run as fast as possible, without any predetermined velocity profile. In the second series, the same distance was covered at a constant velocity (equal to the average in the previous free-pace run), set by a cyclist preceding the runner. Short-term Fourier transform was used to analyse velocity oscillations. Our results show that: (1) for all subjects, the mean energy spectrum did not change throughout the free-pace runs, suggesting that velocity variability did not increase with fatigue (2-way ANOVA, P=0.557); (2) the kinetic of oxygen uptake and its asymptote were not changed during the free-pace runs compared to the constant-velocity run; (3) performance was not significantly improved by free-pace average velocity [mean (SD) 4.22 (0.47) compared to 4.25 (0.52) m x s(-1) for constant and free-pace respectively, t=-0.58, P=0.57]. These results indicate that during middle-distance running, fatigue does not increase variations in velocity, and free-pace changes neither performance nor the oxygen kinetic.
