Abstract:Purpose: This study assessed the effects of footwear longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy and biomechanics of rearfoot striking older runners. Methods: Nine runners over 60 years of age completed two running bouts at their preferred running pace in each of three footwear conditions: low (4.4 ± 1.8 N·m-1), moderate (5.7 ± 1.7 N·m-1), and high (6.4 ± 1.6 N·m-1) bending stiffness. Testing order was randomized and a mirror protocol was used (i.e., A,B,C,C,B,A). Expired gases, lower limb kinematics, and ground reaction forces were collected simultaneously and lower limb joint kinetics, running economy (i.e., VO2), leg stiffness, and spatio-temporal variables were calculated. Results: Running economy was not different among stiffness conditions (p = 0.60, p = 0.53 [mass adjusted]). Greater footwear stiffness reduced step length (p = 0.046) and increased peak vertical ground reaction force (p = 0.019) but did not change peak ankle plantarflexor torque (p = 0.65), peak positive ankle power (p = 0.48), ankle positive work (p = 0.86), propulsive force (p = 0.081), and leg stiffness (p = 0.46). Moderate footwear stiffness yielded greater peak negative knee power compared to low (p = 0.04) and high (p = 0.03) stiffness. Conclusions: These novel findings demonstrate that increasing footwear longitudinal bending stiffness using flat carbon fiber inserts does not improve running economy and generally does not alter lower limb joint mechanics of rearfoot strike runners over 60 years. Future studies should investigate how other footwear characteristics (e.g., midsole material, plate location, and sole curvature) influence economy and biomechanics in this population.

Abstract:Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology, Ahead of Print. The bending stiffness of footwear impacts running efficiency and lower-limb work redistribution. However, studies integrating both aspects are scarce. This study aimed to examine the impact of footwear stiffness on lower-limb biomechanics, joint work, and overall metabolic efficiency. This study was performed on 12 male recreational runners to complete an experimental protocol while wearing two different running shoes with varying degrees of longitudinal bending stiffness. Paired-sample t tests were applied in this research. The stiffer footwear decreased the range of motion (ROM), angular velocity, negative and positive work of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, and ROM of the ankle joint. The running economy significantly improved with the stiffer footwear. However, no significant difference was observed in the joint work of other lower limbs. Shoes with increased bending stiffness significantly reduced the MTP joint ROM and angular velocity, thereby reducing negative power and work at the MTP joint and improving running economy for runners. This study provided relevant information for shoe designers, developers, and scientists conducting research on footwear midsole structures and designs.

Energetics and Biomechanics of Running Footwear with Increased Longitudinal Bending Stiffness: A Narrative Review

Abstract:In the wake of the quest to break the 2-h marathon barrier, carbon-fiber plates have become commonplace in marathon racing shoes. Despite the controversy surrounding this shoe technology, studies on the effects of increased longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy report mixed results. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the current literature on midsole bending stiffness and carbon-fiber plates in distance running shoes, focusing on how longitudinal bending stiffness affects running energetics and lower limb mechanics. The current literature reports changes in running economy with increased longitudinal bending stiffness ranging from ~ 3% deterioration to ~ 3% improvement. In some studies, larger improvements have been observed, but often those shoes varied in many aspects, not just longitudinal bending stiffness. Biomechanically, increased longitudinal bending stiffness has the largest impact on metatarsal-phalangeal (MTP) and ankle joint mechanics. Plate location [top loaded (an insole), embedded (in between midsole foam), and bottom loaded (along the bottom of the shoe)] and geometry (flat/curved) affect joint moments and angular velocities at the MTP and ankle joint differently, which partly explains the mixed running economy results. Further research investigating how carbon-fiber plates interact with other footwear features (such as foam and midsole geometry), scaling of those with shoe size, body mass, and strike pattern, and comparing various plate placements is needed to better understand how longitudinal bending stiffness affects running economy.

Abstract:Purpose: It has been shown that mechanical energy is dissipated at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint during running and jumping. Furthermore, increasing the longitudinal bending stiffness of the midsole significantly reduced the energy dissipated at the MTP joint and increased jump performance. It was hypothesized that increasing midsole longitudinal bending stiffness would also lead to improvements in running economy. This study investigated the influence of midsole longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy (performance variable) and evaluated the local effects on joint energetics and muscular activity. Methods: Carbon fiber plates were inserted into running shoe midsoles and running economy, joint energy, and electromyographic (EMG) data were collected on 13 subjects. Results: Approximately a 1% metabolic energy savings was observed when subjects ran in a stiff midsole relative to the control midsole. Subjects with a greater body mass had a greater decrease in oxygen consumption rates in the stiff midsole relative to the control midsole condition. The stiffer midsoles showed no significant differences in energy absorption at the MTP joint compared with the control shoe. Finally, no significant changes were observed in muscular activation. Conclusion: Increasing midsole longitudinal bending stiffness led to improvements in running economy, yet the underlying mechanisms that can be attributed to this improvement are still not fully understood.
The Impact of Running Experience and Shoe Longitudinal Bending Stiffness on Lower Extremity Biomechanics

Abstract:Purpose The impacts of shoe stiffness on running biomechanics are well-documented, while the specific effects on the performance of biomechanically distinct groups such as novice runners and experienced runners are still largely unexplored. The study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical effects of different shoe longitudinal bending stiffness (adjusted by inserting carbon plate) on the lower limb during running in novice runners and experienced runners. Methods Twelve experienced runners and ten novice runners ran at a speed of 4.47 m/s while randomly wearing shoes with either low stiffness (5.9 Nm/rad) or high stiffness (8.6 Nm/rad). An Opensim musculoskeletal model was adopted for estimating lower limb joint angles, joint angular velocities, joint moment, joint work, peak joint reaction forces during running stance phase. Results Results showed that novice runners displayed greater lower limb joint mobility and less joint moment, while experienced runners exhibited less joint mobility but greater joint moment, and higher peak joint reaction forces were observed at the knee and ankle joints. Furthermore, increased shoe longitudinal bending stiffness resulted in higher peak joint reaction forces at the metatarsophalangeal joint for novice runners while lower for experienced runners. Conclusions Novice runners may face an increased risk of metatarsal pain or stress fractures when dealing with higher shoe stiffness. This nuanced understanding of joint dynamics underscores the need for tailored training and footwear recommendations to mitigate injury risks specific to different levels of running experience.

Abstract:This study aimed to address the effects of increased longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) on running economy (RE) and running biomechanics. A systematic search on four electronic databases (Pubmed, WOS, Medline and Scopus) was conducted on 26 May 2021. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and were included. Standardised mean difference with 95% confidence intervals (CI) between footwear with increased LBS vs. non-increased LBS conditions and effect sizes were calculated. To assess the potential effects of moderator variables (type and length plate, increased LBS, shoe mass and running speed) on the main outcome variable (i.e. RE), subgroup analyses were performed. Increased LBS improved RE (SMD = −0.43 [95% CI −0.58, −0.28], Z = 5.60, p < 0.001) compared to non-increased LBS. Significant increases of stride length (SMD = 0.29 [95% CI 0.10, 0.49], Z = 2.93, p = 0.003) and contact time (SMD = 0.17 [95% CI 0.03, 0.31], Z = 2.32, p = 0.02) were found when LBS was increased. RE improved to a greater degree at higher running speeds with footwear with increased LBS. RE improved 3.45% with curve plate compared to no-plate condition without improvements with flat plate shoes. When shoe mass was matched between footwear with increased LBS vs. non-increased LBS conditions, RE improved (3.15%). However, when shoe mass was not controlled (experimental condition with ∼35 grams extra), a significant small improvement was found. These RE improvements appear along with an increase of stride length and contact time. Shoe mass, type of plate (flat or curve) and running speed should be taken into consideration when designing a shoe aimed at improving long-distance running performance.

Abstract:The influence of nonlinear bending stiffness footwear, which alters the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint bending as a function of forefoot bending stiffness, has been postulated to improve athletic performance and reduce injury risk during many sports. As the shoe moves through greater amounts of bending, forefoot stiffness should increase nonlinearly, to shift the centre of pressure forward (improving performance), while restricting forefoot bending in regions where turf toe injury may result. Recently, materials which allow for stiffness modifications as a function of forefoot flexion angle have been developed; however, the efficacy of this technology is unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to evaluate the influence of gearing technology (a variable bending stiffness shoe) on biomechanics during running and sprinting. Ten male recreational athletes performed running and sprinting in two footwear conditions consisting of an altered US 10 adidas 16.4 FXG cleat. The footwear was altered by placing carbon fibre insoles with variable (nonlinear stiffness) into the shoes creating two different conditions: Control (no insole) and the variable stiffness (varStiff) shoe (gearing insoles). Kinematic (joint angles) and kinetic (ground reaction force and 3D joint moments) data of the lower extremity were recorded during each movement. The results of the study indicate that the variable stiffness insoles did positively influence athlete lower extremity biomechanics. At the MTP joint, as running speed increased (and normal MTP bending range of motion increased), the variable stiffness insoles reduced the amount of MTP bending of the shoes and reduced the medial–lateral movement of the point of force application. Additionally, the variable stiffness insoles reduced key biomechanical injury risk variables, such as non-sagittal plane joint loading at the knee and ankle joint.
Effects of Shoe Midfoot Bending Stiffness on Multi-Segment Foot Kinematics and Ground Reaction Force during Heel-Toe Running

Abstract:We investigated how midfoot stiffness of running shoes influences foot segment kinematics and ground reaction force (GRF) during heel-toe running. Nineteen male rearfoot strike runners performed overground heel-toe running at 3.3 m/s when wearing shoes with different midfoot bending stiffnesses (low, medium, and high) in a randomized order. A synchronized motion capture system (200 Hz) and force plate (1000 Hz) were used to collect the foot-marker trajectories and GRF data. Foot kinematics, including rearfoot-lab, midfoot-rearfoot, forefoot-rearfoot, and forefoot-midfoot interactions, and kinetics, including GRF characteristics, were analyzed. Our results indicated that high midfoot stiffness shoes reduced the forefoot-rearfoot range of motion (mean ± SD; high stiffness, 7.8 ± 2.0°, low stiffness, 8.7 ± 2.1°; p < 0.05) and forefoot-midfoot range of motion (mean ± SD; high stiffness, 4.2 ± 1.1°, medium stiffness, 4.6 ± 0.9°; p < 0.05) in the frontal plane. No differences were found in the GRF characteristics among the shoe conditions. These findings suggest that an increase in midsole stiffness only in the midfoot region can reduce intersegmental foot medial-lateral movements during the stance phase of running. This may further decrease the tension of the foot muscles and tendons during prolonged exercises.
Influence of midsole bending stiffness on joint energy and jump height performance

Abstract:Purpose: A substantial amount of rotational energy is lost at the metatarsophalangeal joint during running and jumping. We hypothesized that the lost energy could be decreased by increasing the bending stiffness of shoe midsoles. The purposes of this investigation were to determine the influence of stiff shoe midsoles on changes in lower extremity joint power during running and jumping and to determine the influence of stiff shoe midsoles on vertical jump performance. Methods: Carbon fiber plates were inserted into shoe midsoles and data were collected on five subjects during running and vertical jumping. Results: The data showed that energy generation and absorption at each of the ankle, knee, and hip joints was not influenced by the stiffness of the shoe midsole. The stiff shoes with the carbon fiber plates did not increase the amount of energy stored and reused at the metatarsophalangeal joint; however, they reduced the amount of energy lost at this joint during both running and jumping. Vertical jump height was significantly higher (average, 1.7 cm for a group of 25 subjects) while wearing the stiff shoes. Conclusions: Increasing the bending stiffness of the metatarsophalangeal joint reduced the amount of energy lost at that joint and resulted in a corresponding improvement of performance.
The Effects of Increased Midsole Bending Stiffness of Sport Shoes on Muscle-Tendon Unit Shortening and Shortening Velocity: a Randomised Crossover Trial in Recreational Male Runners

Abstract:Background: Individual compliances of the foot-shoe interface have been suggested to store and release elastic strain energy via ligamentous and tendinous structures or by increased midsole bending stiffness (MBS), compression stiffness, and resilience of running shoes. It is unknown, however, how these compliances interact with each other when the MBS of a running shoe is increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate how structures of the foot-shoe interface are influenced during running by changes to the MBS of sport shoes. Methods: A randomised crossover trial was performed, where 13 male, recreational runners ran on an instrumented treadmill at 3.5 m·s-1 while motion capture was used to estimate foot arch, plantar muscle-tendon unit (pMTU), and shank muscle-tendon unit (sMTU) behaviour in two conditions: (1) control shoe and (2) the same shoe with carbon fibre plates inserted to increase the MBS. Results: Running in a shoe with increased MBS resulted in less deformation of the arch (mean ± SD; stiff, 7.26 ± 1.78°; control, 8.84 ± 2.87°; p ≤ 0.05), reduced pMTU shortening (stiff, 4.39 ± 1.59 mm; control, 6.46 ± 1.42 mm; p ≤ 0.01), and lower shortening velocities of the pMTU (stiff, - 0.21 ± 0.03 m·s-1; control, - 0.30 ± 0.05 m·s-1; p ≤ 0.01) and sMTU (stiff, - 0.35 ± 0.08 m·s-1; control, - 0.45 ± 0.11 m·s-1; p ≤ 0.001) compared to a control condition. The positive and net work performed at the arch and pMTU, and the net work at the sMTU were significantly lower in the stiff compared to the control condition. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that if a compliance of the foot-shoe interface is altered during running (e.g. by increasing the MBS of a shoe), the mechanics of other structures change as well. This could potentially affect long-distance running performance.

Abstract:Background: Running shoes with carbon plates have been identified to have positive effects on improving running performance from a biomechanical perspective. However, the specific difference between the effects of carbon plates with different longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS)on biomechanical characteristics and muscular mechanics of lower limbs in adolescent runners remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the difference in biomechanical characteristics and muscular mechanics in lower limbs during running stance phases between wearing shoes with low longitudinal bending stiffness (Llbs) and high longitudinal bending stiffness (Hlbs) carbon plates in adolescent runners. Methods: 10 male adolescent runners with a habit of daily running exercise (age: 13.5 ± 0.6 years; height: 166.3 ± 1.9 cm; bodyweight: 50.8 ± 3.1 kg; foot length: 25.4 ± 0.2 cm) were recruited and asked to conduct two times of tests by wearing shoes with Llbs and Hlbs carbon plates in a randomized order. Paired t -test and statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis were used to identify the difference in biomechanical characteristics and muscular mechanics in lower limbs during running stance phases. Result: Under the condition of wearing shoes with Hlbs, the time of foot contact significantly increased, whereas the range of motion (ROM) of hip and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) in the sagittal plane significantly reduced as well as the peak moment of ankle joint in the sagittal plane. The activations of vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, flexor digitorum brevis (flex dig brevis), and flexor hallucis longus (flex hall long) significantly increased under the condition of wearing shoes with Hlbs. According to the results of the SPM analysis, the joint angles (hip, ankle, and MTP), the net joint moments (knee, ankle, and MTP), and the muscle forces (gluteus maximus and tibialis anterior) were significant difference during the running stance phase between conditions of wearing shoes with Hlbs and Llbs. Conclusion: Running shoes with Llb carbon plates are appropriate for adolescent runners due to the advantages of biomechanical characteristics and muscular mechanics.

Abstract:Recent technologically advanced running shoes have been designed with higher stack height and curved carbon plate-reinforced toe springs to enhance running performance. The purpose of this study was to examine how curved carbon-plate reinforcement modulated mechanical efficiency at the ankle joint during the running stance phase. We prepared two footwear conditions: Non and Carbon, both had a 3D-printed midsole (40-mm heel thickness). A full-length curved carbon plate was inserted along the toe spring in Carbon. The participants included 14 non-rearfoot long-distance athletes. They were required to run at a speed of 12 km/h on a 20-m runway with both shoes. Mechanical-energy expenditure (MEE, indicating mechanical work) and compensation (MEC, indicating mechanical efficiency) were calculated in the following mechanical-energy transfer phases: concentric, eccentric, and no-transfer. Running with Carbon exhibited improved MEC and reduced MEE at the ankle joint during the concentric transfer phase than with Non. The improvement in the concentric MEC at the ankle joint indicates that a larger amount of mechanical energy is transferred from the shank into the foot segment that compensates for the force exerted by the plantar flexor muscles, which implies more mechanically efficient plantarflexion movement. As the ankle joint is the largest energetic contributor in the running stance phase, greater MEC and lower MEE and torque at the ankle joint could improve running performance. Hence, the curved carbon plate may be a key feature of advanced footwear technology.
Biomechanical Investigation of Lower Limbs during Slope Transformation Running with Different Longitudinal Bending Stiffness Shoes

Abstract:Background: During city running or marathon races, shifts in level ground and up-and-down slopes are regularly encountered, resulting in changes in lower limb biomechanics. The longitudinal bending stiffness of the running shoe affects the running performance. Purpose: This research aimed to investigate the biomechanical changes in the lower limbs when transitioning from level ground to an uphill slope under different longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) levels in running shoes. Methods: Fifteen male amateur runners were recruited and tested while wearing three different LBS running shoes. The participants were asked to pass the force platform with their right foot at a speed of 3.3 m/s ± 0.2. Kinematics data and GRFs were collected synchronously. Each participant completed and recorded ten successful experiments per pair of shoes. Results: The range of motion in the sagittal of the knee joint was reduced with the increase in the longitudinal bending stiffness. Positive work was increased in the sagittal plane of the ankle joint and reduced in the keen joint. The negative work of the knee joint increased in the sagittal plane. The positive work of the metatarsophalangeal joint in the sagittal plane increased. Conclusion: Transitioning from running on a level surface to running uphill, while wearing running shoes with high LBS, could lead to improved efficiency in lower limb function. However, the higher LBS of running shoes increases the energy absorption of the knee joint, potentially increasing the risk of knee injuries. Thus, amateurs should choose running shoes with optimal stiffness when running.

Increasing the longitudinal bending stiffness of runners’ habitual shoes: An appropriate choice for improving running performance?

Abstract:This study analysed the effects of increasing the longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) of runners’ habitual shoes on the metabolic energetic demand, lower limb muscle activation and stride spatiotemporal parameters during a prolonged running session through classical group investigation, as well as a more individualised approach. Eleven recreational male participants ran overground for 40 min at 95% of their ventilatory anaerobic threshold with their own shoes or their shoes with higher LBS (stiff carbon plate inserted under insole). The net energetic cost of running, lower leg muscle activation and spatiotemporal parameters were measured during the prolonged running. The variables of interest were analysed for 1 min in seven time intervals. There were no main effects of LBS or interaction effects with running duration on the group averaged variables. Overall, the participant-specific metabolic effects induced by an increased shoe LBS were not beneficial. Beneficial metabolic effects were more likely to occur when the increased LBS induced a decrease or no change in the ground contact time relative to their habitual shoes, as well as for taller runners. Increasing the LBS in runners’ habitual shoes did not induce systematic metabolic effects for all the runners and may not be beneficial for performance purposes if the runners’ shoe habits were too disrupted.
Effects of longitudinal bending stiffness and midsole foam on running energetics

Abstract:Background: Advanced footwear technology has become commonplace in the competitive running world. However, a systematic exploration of the effects of each of the primary components has not yet been presented. Purpose: To quantify running economy and step parameters in four different shoe conditions: PEBA shoes with plate, PEBA shoes without plate, EVA shoes with plate and EVA shoes without plate. Methods: Participants ran at 14 km/h (n = 8 males) or 12 km/h (n = 6 females) on a treadmill. The shoe order was randomly assigned for the four shoe conditions, where the participants wore each shoe twice in a mirrored order. Results: There was a significant reduction in metabolic power (1.0%) associated with the presence of a plate, as well as a similar reduction based on foam type (1.0%). However, there was no significant interaction between presence of plate and foam type. Adding a plate significantly reduced metabolic power for EVA by 1.3% but not for PEBA. PEBA foam significantly reduced metabolic power by 1.3% in shoes without a plate, but not for the shoes with a plate. Step frequency and contact time were similar between shoes and not correlated to running economy improvements. Conclusions: Starting from a baseline condition with traditional foam without a plate, either adding a plate or using PEBA foam improved running economy with a similar amount (1.3%). Adding the alternate second feature non-significantly improved running economy with an additional 0.6%. The benefit of both technologies combined (1.9%) was smaller than the sum of its parts (1.3% each).

Relationship between Connective Tissue Morphology and Lower-Limb Stiffness in Endurance Runners. A Prospective Study

Abstract:Background: The lower limb behaves like a spring compressing and decompressing during running, where lower-limb stiffness is one of the most influential factors. This prospective observational study is aimed at examining the relationship between the connective tissue morphology and lower-limb stiffness and investigating whether the barefoot/shod condition influences on such relationship. Methods: 14 male amateur runners (10-km time trial <50') were included. Data were recorded over one session, where participants ran 2 trials (i.e., barefoot and shod conditions) of 3 minutes at 12 km/h, where running spatiotemporal parameters and vertical (Kvert) and leg stiffness (Kleg) were obtained. Prior to testing trials, thickness and cross-sectional area (CSA) were recorded for Achilles (AT) and patellar tendons (PT) and plantar fascia (PF) with ultrasound. Results: Under barefoot condition, a positive correlation was found between Kleg and AT-thickness and CSA and PF-thickness; and between Kvert and AT-thickness and PF thickness. Under shod condition, a positive correlation was found between Kleg and PT-CSA and PT-thickness, and between Kvert and PT-CSA and PT-thickness. Conclusions: The results reveal a specificity of the relationship between the lower-limb stiffness and the morphology of the connective tissue. Greater tendon shows higher lower-limb stiffness when that tendon is specially demanded by the function.
Longitudinal bending stiffness does not affect running economy in Nike Vaporfly Shoes

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to determine the independent effect of the curved carbon-fiber plate in the Nike Vaporfly 4% shoe on running economy and running biomechanics. Methods: Fifteen healthy male runners completed a metabolic protocol and a biomechanics protocol. In both protocols participants wore 2 different shoes, an intact Nike Vaporfly 4% (VFintact) and a cut Nike Vaporfly 4% (VFcut). The VFcut had 6 medio-lateral cuts through the carbon-fiber plate in the forefoot to reduce the effectiveness of the plate. In the metabolic protocol, participants ran at 14 km/h for 5 min, twice with each shoe, on a force-measuring treadmill while we measured metabolic rate. In the biomechanics protocol, participants ran across a runway with embedded force plates at 14 km/h. We calculated running economy, kinetics, and lower limb joint mechanics. Results: Running economy did not significantly differ between shoe conditions (on average, 0.55% ± 1.77% (mean ± SD)) worse in the VFcut compared to the VFintact; 95% confidence interval (-1.44% to 0.40%). Biomechanical differences were only found in the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint with increased MTP dorsiflexion angle, angular velocity, and negative power in the VFcut. Contact time was 1% longer in the VFintact. Conclusion: Cutting the carbon-fiber plate and reducing the longitudinal bending stiffness did not have a significant effect on the energy savings in the Nike Vaporfly 4%. This suggests that the plate's stiffening effect on the MTP joint plays a limited role in the reported energy savings, and instead savings are likely from a combination and interaction of the foam, geometry, and plate.
Increasing Shoe Longitudinal Bending Stiffness Is Not Beneficial to Reduce Energy Cost During Graded Running

Abstract:Purpose: Carbon plates have been used to increase running shoes' longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS), leading to reductions in the energy cost of level running (Cr). However, whether or not this is true during uphill (UH) running remains unknown. The aim of our study was to identify the effect of LBS on Cr during UH running. Methods: Twenty well-trained male runners participated in this study. Cr was determined using gas exchange during nine 4-minute bouts performed using 3 different LBS shoe conditions at 2.22 and 4.44 m/s on level and 2.22 m/s UH (gradient: + 15%) running. All variables were compared using 2-way analyses of variance (LBS × speed/grade effects). Results: There was no significant effect of LBS (F = 2.04; P = .14, ηp2=.11) and no significant LBS × grade interaction (F = 0.31; P = .87, ηp2=.02). Results were characterized by a very large interindividual variability in response to LBS changes. Conclusions: The current study contributes to a growing body of literature reporting no effect of LBS on Cr during level and UH running. Yet, the very large interindividual differences in response to changes in LBS suggest that increasing shoe LBS may be beneficial for some runners.
Transverse contributions to the longitudinal stiffness of the human foot

Abstract:Humans rely on the foot's stiffness to withstand the propulsive forces of walking and running. The medial longitudinal arch (MLA) and the transverse tarsal arch (TTA) are key adaptations that increase the human midfoot's longitudinal bending stiffness. The TTA is hypothesized to increase stiffness through a cross-axis coupling between transverse tissue stiffness and longitudinal midfoot stiffness. However, we currently lack in vivo tests of this hypothesis. Such tests are crucial because muscle contraction considerably modulates MLA function and may also affect the TTA's predicted cross-axis coupling. Here we show in vivo evidence for substantial cross-axis coupling in standing human subjects. We found that longitudinal midfoot bending stiffness increased upon increasing transverse forefoot stiffness using an elastic tape (mean$\pm$standard error = $76\% \pm 19\%$, p=0.0002), thus supporting the TTA hypothesis. The cross-axis coupling could be a potential therapeutic target for some foot disorders and help augment foot stiffness for athletics.

Footwear-specific biomechanical and energetic responses to 8 weeks of training in advanced footwear technology

Abstract:While the acute effects of advanced footwear technology (AFT) on running biomechanics and efficiency have been extensively studied, the longitudinal effects of AFT use are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using advanced footwear technology (AFT) versus traditional racing flats during running workouts on relative running economy (RE) and energetic cost (EC), and explore associations between changes in footwear-specific biomechanics and performance. Thirteen competitive runners were randomly assigned Nike Vaporfly Next% 3 (VP) or Nike Rival Waffle 5 (FL) for an 8-week intervention and completed pre- (PRE) and post-intervention (POST) lab testing in both shoes. Weekly training data, including mileage, workouts, and soreness, were collected via questionnaires. Subjects ran two 3-min trials at a self-selected cross-country race pace, with sagittal plane ankle and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint kinematics and kinetics recorded and analysed. Subsequently, four 5-min trials were completed at a self-reported submaximal pace, in a randomized order, and shoe-specific RE and EC were calculated and reported as VP% benefit the percentage RE or EC improvement in VP versus FL. Pearson′s correlations were tested between RE outcomes and exploratory biomechanics – measures, and independent samples t-tests tested for group differences in shoe-specific and overall efficiency changes from PRE to POST. VP% benefit increased from PRE to POST in VP trained runners and decreased in FL trained runners. VP trained runners decreased ankle plantarflexion velocity in VP, increased ankle dorsiflexion velocity in VP, and decreased MTP plantarflexion velocity in FL. Correlations revealed several significant associations between metabolic outcome measures, and biomechanical and training variables. Metabolic data support a footwear specificity of training principle (habituation), where training in VP may enhance a runner′s ability to benefit from VP on race day. Associations reveal that this may be due to changes in footwear-specific biomechanics at the ankle and MTP joints. Future research should explore the potential mechanisms through which runners adapt to AFT to maximize their performance benefits.
