Abstract:When it comes to electrophoretic deposition, suspension stability is the key parameter that determines the outcome of the process, and influences the quality of the green and subsequent sintered products. As such, we utilized stable colloidal precursors to improve the electrophoretic deposition of superconducting MgB 2 coatings on copper. It was found that the stability of MgB 2 particles in acetone can be enhanced through the addition of iodine which resulted in the zeta potential increasing to 57.5 mV from 23 mV that of control. Through stabilization, the deposition yield out of dilute suspensions is significantly improved which is attributed to the enhanced electrophoretic mobility of the particles. Subsequent heating experiments showed that a brief soak at 800°C can improve the T C and superconducting transition of the deposited coating. In the early phase of heat treatment, the coalescence of MgB 2 particles was initiated which helped eliminate superficial cracks. Further soak induced recrystallization and aggregate growth but also increased the MgO concentration to an appreciable level which eventually suppressed superconductivity.
