Abstract:A model of the laser echo signal was established considering the emission characteristics, target scattering characteristics and geometric features synthetically. The echo power equations of three typical targets (a plane, a cone and a cylinder) were deduced. The effects of different factors on the echo power were simulated and analyzed. The results show that the shape of echo waveform is affected with ultrashort pulse width. The echo power amplitude is mainly affected with detection range, BRDF and target size. The verification experiments show that as the cone half-angle and cylinder radius increases, or the tilt angle of plane decreases, the echo power increases, but the peak time and pulse width change hardly. Furthermore, a hybrid ranging method was proposed and applied to reduce ranging error based on back propagation neural network and peak detection.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric turbulence significantly affects laser transmission and echo. The size of the echo cross section and the distribution of energy are important parameters to obtain target information. In this paper, the speckle characteristics of laser echo are analyzed using field experiments with different detection distances. The energy attenuation law is observed, and the statistical law governing the cross-sectional area and energy of the echo light spot is determined based on the time variability of atmospheric turbulence. The research shows that in order to obtain stable return laser beam interference information, the current weather situation and the strength of atmospheric turbulence should be considered, and the corresponding interference region should be selected according to the detection distance. Although the size and energy of the echo cross section are directly affected by the detection distance, the variation trend remains consistent and indicates a clear statistical law that provides a strong basis for laser interferometry.

Abstract:Based on the radar equation and system noise characteristics, the maximum detection range model of a space debris laser ranging system at a 1064 nm wavelength is established, taking into account the factors of atmospheric transmission and sky background radiance. Through theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, the influencing factors of atmospheric transmission and sky background radiance are studied, and the influencing factors are normalized into the maximum detection range model by polynomial fitting. The results indicate that a high atmospheric transmission comes from a high altitude and low target zenith angle; a low sky background radiance comes from a small target zenith angle and low solar altitude angle, while the angular distance has no obvious influence on the sky background radiance. The experimental results indicate that the comprehensive accuracy of the maximum detection range model of the system is 86%, and the effectiveness of the model is verified by using a 1064 nm wavelength laser ranging for the debris target with a distance of 700–1100 km and a cross section area of 4–10 m2. The model can be used to evaluate the ability of the space debris laser ranging system at a 1064 nm wavelength.

Abstract:Space debris has been posing a serious threat to human space activities and is needed to be measured and cataloged. As a new technology of space target surveillance, the measurement accuracy of DRLR (Diffuse Reflection Laser Ranging) is much higher than that of microwave radar and electro-optical measurement. Based on laser ranging data of space debris from DRLR system collected at SHAO (Shanghai Astronomical Observatory) in March-April 2013, the characteristics and precision of the laser ranging data are analyzed and its applications in OD (Orbit Determination) of space debris are discussed in this paper, which is implemented for the first time in China. The experiment indicates that the precision of laser ranging data can reach 39cm-228cm. When the data is sufficient enough (4 arcs of 3 days), the orbit accuracy of space debris can be up to 50m.

Abstract:Space debris is a major problem for all space-active nations. Adopting high precision measuring techniques will help to produce the reliable and accurate catalogue for space debris and collision avoidance. Laser Ranging is a kind of real-time measuring technology with high precision for space debris observation. The first experiment of laser ranging to the space debris in China was performed at the Shanghai Observatory in July 2008 at the ranging precision of about 60- 80cm. The experiment results show that the return signals from the targets with the range of 900 km were quite strong with the power of 40W (2J@20Hz), 10ns pulse width laser at 532nm wavelength. The performances of preliminary laser ranging system and the observed results in 2008 and 2010 are introduced in the paper.

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence affects the transmission of laser pulses through the atmosphere. The effects mean that the peak power of the laser pulses is not stable. For laser pulses reflected by a cooperative target, the peak power instability is greater because of the double-pass propagation of the laser pulses through the same atmosphere. The atmospheric turbulence can be monitored by detecting the peak power instability of echo laser pulses. This paper presents a method for monitoring atmospheric turbulence based on a cooperative target. Comparative experiments are carried out based on using a diffuse whiteboard and a corner-cube retroreflector (CCR) as the cooperative target. The distance between the two terminals of the experimental system is 1550m. The size of the diffuse whiteboard is 60×60cm2. The bottom surface of the CCR is a circle with a diameter of 1in. and the three mirrors of the CCR are coated with silver. Experiment results show that the peak power instability of echo laser pulses retroreflected by the CCR is 28.3%. This is much larger than that diffuse reflected by the whiteboard (11.2%). This indicates that the method based on the CCR has higher atmospheric sensitivity. In addition, the peak power of the echo laser pulses retroreflected by the CCR is also much larger. Therefore, the system based on the CCR is more suitable for monitoring of atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:In order to study the target echo interference characteristics of laser echoes in atmospheric turbulent media and obtain clear and effective interference information, this paper uses the flat-top laser to establish a statistical light intensity transmission model in atmospheric turbulent media and specifically analyzes the laser transmission distance, light spot cross-section, and turbulence intensity, respectively. The research shows that in the atmospheric turbulent medium, it is the main factor that the transmission distances of the flat-top laser effects on the light intensity, and the light intensity decreases monotonically with the increase of transmission distance. The larger the turbulence intensity is, the larger the cross-section radius of the flat-top laser is. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the construction and selection of effective interference areas.
Numerical simulation of the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the laser signal

Abstract:In order to analyze the influence of atmospheric turbulence on laser signal transmission,based on the theory of random signals and stochastic processes,the signal-to-noise ratio( SNR) and bit error rate( BER) formula is derived for wireless laser communication system,the effect of the scintillation index,atmospheric structure constant and laser wavelength on the SNR and the bit error rate is explored,and under different atmospheric structure constant and different laser wavelength,the signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate with the change of transmission distance are studied by numerical simulation. The results show that: under the weak fluctuation condition,the scintillation index increase will reduce the communication quality of the system; the atmospheric turbulence has a significant impact on signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate of laser communication system. Comparison with the effect of different laser wavelengths on the system,the long wavelength laser signal can increase effective distance of the signal transmission,restrain the growth of BER and improve communication quality of wireless laser communication system.

Abstract:First, transmission equation of the laser transmitting through atmospheric turbulence channel was analyzed, ignoring other noises in the system, atmosphere turbulence was the only cause for Bit Error Rate (BER). Then, the amplitude variance and intensity variance of the laser signal were discussed, and the relationship between BER and the laser communication system was deduced. The result indicated that in the weak variance condition intensity variance should be below 0.67 for communication system with BER below 10-9; with turbulence intensity Cn 2 increasing, BER increased rapidly; adopting laser with longest wave to communicate can decrease BER effectively.

Abstract:When a platform carrying a space laser communication system moves through the atmosphere, the relative motion of the turret and the air produces fluctuations in the air density, which affects the beam propagation, and, hence, the laser communication performance. In this paper, we propose a performance analysis method for the space laser communication link to the airborne platform. By employing this method, which is based on a flow field simulation, we are able to determine the laser link's communication performance curves for various flying situations. At an altitude of 5 km and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 10 dB for the laser communication link, the bit error rate (BER) under a flight speed of 0.4 Mach is 5.1×10−4. With each 0.1 Mach increase in speed, the BER decreases by approximately 6×10−5. If the flight speed is 0.8 Mach and the flight altitude increases from 5 km to 10 km, the BER decreases from 7.26×10−4 to 1.89×10−4, but the system becomes more sensitive to changes in flight speed. Under the same flight altitude conditions, the beam spot on the downwind side is more affected by airflow, resulting in a general increase in the BER by approximately one order of magnitude, compared to the upwind side.

Abstract:Orientation information of space debris is required to improve the orbital prediction accuracy for mitigation or elimination of a significant threat to not only human space activities but also operational satellites. Obtaining orientation information is currently achievable by applying photometry, adaptive optics (AO) and satellite laser ranging (SLR) technologies. In this study, a new method is proposed based on an echo laser pulse waveform (ELPW) for the orientation determination of space debris; its feasibility was also investigated by numerical simulations. Unlike the photometry and AO technologies available just under the sun-illumination condition and the SLR technology applicable only for cooperative targets, the ELPW is achievable by using a high power laser regardless of the above measurement constraints. A mathematical model is derived to generate the ELPW, and the beam broadening and spreading due to the atmospheric turbulence is taken into account. The Gaussian decomposition based on a genetic algorithm was employed to the ELPWs in order to analyze the orientation features. It is demonstrated from the numerical simulations that the ELPWs have distinctive shapes characterizing the orientation of space debris and therefore our approach was capable of providing orientation information.

Abstract:With satellite laser communication, advantages can be achieved in high communication rate, precise beam pointing, high confidentiality, and light‐small terminal. Satellite–ground (SG) laser links also play a crucial role as trunk links. However, the SG link is influenced by atmospheric turbulence and platform vibration, these two factors will cause unstable link tracking. This paper focuses on the viewpoint of beam energy transmission, using the low‐frequency harmonic phase compensating method to establish the random phase screen. On the basis of this model, the laser beam energy distribution and the spot mass positioning error are analyzed considering turbulence taking vibration which is not considered in previous studies. The simulation results show that the spot mass center (SMC) is impressionable in strong turbulence under platform vibration, but in a weak turbulent environment, SMC is insensitive to vibration when turbulence and vibration are at the same noise level.

Abstract:Debris laser ranging (DLR) is receiving considerable attention as an accurate and effective method of determining and predicting the orbits of space debris. This paper reports some technologies of DLR, such as the high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) laser pulse, large-aperture telescope, telescope array, multi-static stations receiving signals. DLR with a picosecond laser at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory is also presented. A few hundred laps of space debris laser-ranging measurements have been made. A double-pulse picosecond laser with an average power of 4.2 W, a PRF of 1 kHz, and a wavelength of 532 nm has been implemented successfully in DLR, it’s the first time that DLR technology has reached a ranging precision at the sub-decimeter level. In addition, the characteristics of the picosecond-pulse-width laser transmission with the advantages of transmission in laser ranging were analyzed. With a mode of the pulse-burst picosecond laser having high average power, the DLR system has tracked small debris with a radar cross-section (RCS) of 0.91 m2 at a ranging distance up to 1726.8 km, corresponding to an RCS of 0.1 m2 at a distance of 1000 km. These works are expected to provide new technologies to further improve the performance of DLR.

Abstract:Atmospheric drag is an important influencing factor in precise orbit determination and the prediction of low-orbit space debris. It has received widespread attention. Currently, calculating atmospheric drag mainly relies on different atmospheric density models. This experiment was designed to explore the impact of different atmospheric density models on the orbit prediction of space debris. In the experiment, satellite laser ranging data published by the ILRS (International Laser Ranging Service) were used as the basis for the precise orbit determination for space debris. The prediction error of space debris orbits at different orbital heights using different atmospheric density models was used as a criterion to evaluate the impact of atmospheric density models on the determination of space-target orbits. Eight atmospheric density models, DTM78, DTM94, DTM2000, J71, RJ71, JB2006, MSIS86, and NRLMSISE00, were compared in the experiment. The experimental results indicated that the DTM2000 atmospheric density model is best for determining and predicting the orbits of LEO (low-Earth-orbit) targets.

Abstract:According to the generalized Huygens-Fresnel principle, we derived the analytical formula for the complex degree of coherence of the echo light field under the von Karman atmospheric turbulence spectrum condition; based on split-step beam propagation method of the turbulent phase screen and the target surface model, the fold pass propagation simulation of the laser in the turbulent atmosphere is realized, the dynamic speckle characteristics on the image plane are consistent with the experimental phenomenon. Firstly, the simulated values of the complex degree of coherence and phase structure function of the mirrored reflection echo light field are compared with the theoretical values, which verifies the correctness of the algorithm. based on this, the complex degree of coherence of the echo light field reflected by the optical rough surface is calculated and analyzed. The results show that on a double-path turbulent flow path of 1.1km, in other words, it transmits 2.2km in unfolded mode, the spatial coherence of the echo light field is very sensitive to the height root mean square. When the root-mean-square height is close to the wavelength, the coherence is seriously degraded; when the correlation length of the target surface is much larger than the atmospheric coherence length, the coherence length of the echo light field is relatively close to the set spatial coherence length; when the correlation length of the target surface is close to the atmospheric coherence length, the influence of the rough surface of the target on the beam coherence cannot be ignored; when the correlation length of the target surface is much smaller than the atmospheric coherence length, The target surface characteristics have a dominant influence on the echo coherence, the spatial coherence of the light field is seriously degraded, and the echo is close to incoherent light; Considering the smooth target reflection surface, the greater the strength of turbulence, the faster the complex coherence decreases with space. The atmospheric coherence diameter r 0 can be calculated further according to the complex degree of coherence, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the simulated and theoretical values are 0.998, which indicates that the atmospheric coherence diameter calculated by the complex degree of coherence has a high correlation with the theoretical value. This research provides a theoretical basis for the coherent detection scheme of echoes from rough surfaces in the turbulent atmosphere, The simulation algorithm extracts the target surface features by analyzing the variation of the complex coherence of laser echo signals in the turbulent atmosphere with the spatial distance, and also provides an analysis method for using the known target surface to obtain path turbulence information.

Abstract:In coherent optical communication, the application of linearly polarized light can greatly improve communication sensitivity and communication capacity. However, when a laser transmits in an inferior atmospheric layer, the polarization character is influenced by atmospheric turbulence. This study proposes a measurement experiment of the characteristics of linearly polarized light over an 11.16-km turbulent path. We also present a theoretical approach and its operation for investigating the polarization characteristics of a laser. The variations of polarization under different atmosphere link distances and turbulence intensities are also discussed. The experimental results were in agreement with the theoretical analysis results. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the effect of atmospheric turbulence on polarization direction is stronger than that of atmospheric turbulence on the polarization state. This work will benefit coherent free-space optical communication system design efforts.

Abstract:Abstract Satellite laser ranging allows to measure distances to satellites equipped with retroreflectors in orbits up to 36000 km. Utilizing a higher powered laser, space debris laser ranging detects diffuse reflections from defunct satellites or rocket bodies up to a distance of 3000 km. So far space debris laser ranging was only possible within a few hours around twilight while it is dark at the satellite laser ranging station and space debris is illuminated by the sun. Here we present space debris laser ranging results during daylight. Space debris objects are visualized against the blue sky background and biases corrected in real-time. The results are a starting point for all space debris laser ranging stations to drastically increase their output in the near future. A network of a few stations worldwide will be able to improve orbital predictions significantly as necessary for removal missions, conjunction warnings, avoidance maneuvers or attitude determination.

Abstract:The characteristics of laser transmission interference in the atmospheric turbulent medium are studied in this paper in order to obtain the target interference image with atmosphere as the transmission medium and obtain more accurate detection targets. First, the influence of the laser cross section radius and transmission distance on the laser intensity is analyzed, and thereby, the intensity model of lights transmitted in the turbulent medium is obtained. Through the combination of such model with the ideal reference light, the characteristics of atmospheric turbulent medium-based laser transmission interference are obtained. The influencing factors and the significance degree of influence of interference contrast are analyzed in detail. Studies have shown that the attenuation of laser intensity in the atmospheric turbulent medium is obvious and can be effectively adjusted by increasing the cross section radius. The laser interference contrast is also affected by the cross section radius and transmission distance; of the two, the latter has more obvious influence.
