Abstract:Objective Lidar is an active detection tool for detecting the distance and physical information of a target through an echo signal after laser irradiation. There are several researches on single-point lidar echo at home and abroad. When compared with single-point lidar echo, full-waveform lidar echo can carry more echo information. However, there are few studies on the echo equation of the full-waveform lidar. In this study, based on the traditional lidar equation, we derive the general formula of the multitarget lidar echo equation and analyze the effects of laser irradiation area and incident angle on the echo through simulation, which is verified by the proposed experiment platform. Methods The goal of this study is to determine and validate the effect of laser irradiation area and incident angle on the echo of the full-waveform lidar. First, a Lambert body with a reflectivity of 99% was used as the target. Then, a horizontal sliding platform and a rotating platform were combined to control the horizontal and rotating motions of the target. The combined platform, laser, and receiving device were installed on the guide rail to obtain echoes for different irradiation areas and incident angles (Fig. 5) . Owing to the problem of field of view angle (Fig. 6) , we first collected the fixed distance to fully irradiate each target using laser to obtain a single objective function echo. Then, the peak value of the echo waveform was fitted with the simulated single target echo peak value. The theoretical echo waveform was then compared with the experimental echo waveform after a series of echoes were obtained through moving and rotating targets. To demonstrate the correctness of the theoretical formula, the relative error was calculated by subtracting the theoretical echo's peak value from that of the experimental echo. Results and Discussions The simulation results show that the larger the laser-irradiated area of the target, the greater the waveform amplitude ( Figs. 2 and 3 ), and the larger the tilt angle of the target, the smaller the waveform amplitude (Fig. 4). When the abscissa difference between waveform peaks exceeds the single waveform echo pulse width, the average relative error is 4.586% ( Figs. 8, 10, and 11 ). When the abscissa difference between waveform peaks is less than the single waveform echo pulse width, because of the voltage overshoot in the receiving circuit, the average relative error is 10. 673% ( Figs. 9, 12, and 13 ). After removing the voltage overshoot using a new receiving circuit, the average relative error is 5.307% (Figs. 15-18). Conclusions Based on the traditional laser echo theory, the multitarget laser echo power equation is deduced and simulated and the effects of target laser irradiation area and incident angle on the waveform echo are examined. A multitarget detection experimental platform is built to validate the accuracy of the echo equation, and the effect of circuit overshoot on multiwaveform research is verified through experiments using various receiving circuits, which provide a calculation model for full-waveform decomposition and inversion. Following are the conclusions that can be drawn from the simulation and experiment. The target irradiation area is directly proportional and the laser incidence angle is inversely proportional to the echo peak. For the receiving circuit with voltage overshoot, the experimental results show that when the distance between multiple targets is large, the abscissa difference of the waveform peak in the echo waveform is greater than that of the single waveform pulse width and the average experimental relative error is less than 5%. When the distance between multiple targets is less, the abscissa difference of the waveform peak in the echo waveform is less than that of the single waveform pulse width, the experimental relative error increases, and the average value is more than 10 Yo . After using the new receiving circuit to eliminate the voltage overshoot, the experimental relative error is reduced and the average value is less than 6% . It is demonstrated that improving the receiving circuit' s overshoot or fitting overshoot can improve the accuracy of full-waveform echo decomposition.
