Abstract:Abstract Satellite laser ranging allows to measure distances to satellites equipped with retroreflectors in orbits up to 36000 km. Utilizing a higher powered laser, space debris laser ranging detects diffuse reflections from defunct satellites or rocket bodies up to a distance of 3000 km. So far space debris laser ranging was only possible within a few hours around twilight while it is dark at the satellite laser ranging station and space debris is illuminated by the sun. Here we present space debris laser ranging results during daylight. Space debris objects are visualized against the blue sky background and biases corrected in real-time. The results are a starting point for all space debris laser ranging stations to drastically increase their output in the near future. A network of a few stations worldwide will be able to improve orbital predictions significantly as necessary for removal missions, conjunction warnings, avoidance maneuvers or attitude determination.

Abstract:Space debris is a major problem for all space-active nations. Adopting high precision measuring techniques will help to produce the reliable and accurate catalogue for space debris and collision avoidance. Laser Ranging is a kind of real-time measuring technology with high precision for space debris observation. The first experiment of laser ranging to the space debris in China was performed at the Shanghai Observatory in July 2008 at the ranging precision of about 60- 80cm. The experiment results show that the return signals from the targets with the range of 900 km were quite strong with the power of 40W (2J@20Hz), 10ns pulse width laser at 532nm wavelength. The performances of preliminary laser ranging system and the observed results in 2008 and 2010 are introduced in the paper.

Abstract:The ESA project ‘Debris Attitude Motion Measurements and Modeling’ aims to determine spin parameters–like spin period, spin axis orientation, and their evolution during time–using laser ranging, passive optical methods, and radar. This contribution will address the setup, operation and performance of the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) Station Graz, and how Graz data contributes to precise determination of attitude and attitude motion of debris targets, using both laser ranging to cooperative debris targets (usually defunct satellites with retro-reflectors) and single-photon light curve recording (also to uncooperative targets: debris without any retro-reflectors). The target sizes varies from small–e.g. cube sats–up to large targets like Envisat, in distances from a few 100 km (LEO) up to geostationary orbits (GEO), and with spin periods from a few seconds up to several 100 seconds.

Abstract:The presence of debris in Earth's orbit poses a significant risk to human activity in outer space. This debris population continues to grow due to ground launches, loss of external parts from space ships, and uncontrollable collisions between objects. A computationally feasible continuum model for the growth of the debris population and its spatial distribution is therefore critical. Here we propose a diffusion-collision model for the evolution of debris density in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) and its dependence on ground-launch policy. We parametrize this model and test it against data from publicly available object catalogs to examine timescales for uncontrolled growth. Finally, we consider sensible launch policies and cleanup strategies and how they reduce the future risk of collisions with active satellites or space ships.

Abstract:Space debris has been posing a serious threat to human space activities and is needed to be measured and cataloged. As a new technology of space target surveillance, the measurement accuracy of DRLR (Diffuse Reflection Laser Ranging) is much higher than that of microwave radar and electro-optical measurement. Based on laser ranging data of space debris from DRLR system collected at SHAO (Shanghai Astronomical Observatory) in March-April 2013, the characteristics and precision of the laser ranging data are analyzed and its applications in OD (Orbit Determination) of space debris are discussed in this paper, which is implemented for the first time in China. The experiment indicates that the precision of laser ranging data can reach 39cm-228cm. When the data is sufficient enough (4 arcs of 3 days), the orbit accuracy of space debris can be up to 50m.

Abstract:A Gaussian random-phase screen (GRPS) model is proposed to represent the low-frequency wave-front deformation in inter-satellite laser-communication links. The model is used to investigate mutual-alignment errors comprising pointing and tracking errors caused by the low-frequency deformation. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that the GRPS root-mean-square (RMS) value, pointing error, and tracking error increase with the amplitude factor and the scale length in the model. The expectation of RMS increases in the form of a linear function with and increases in the form of a cubic function with . The expectations of the pointing and tracking errors increase with increases in the expected values for and . For a specific pointing error or tracking error, the 99.5% confidence interval of the RMS of the low-frequency wave-front deformation is provided. From this confidence interval, the lower limit of the processing precision of optical antennas corresponding to certain mutual-alignment errors can be predicted. These conclusions are expected to be instrumental in designing inter-satellite laser-communication systems.

Abstract:Debris laser ranging (DLR) is receiving considerable attention as an accurate and effective method of determining and predicting the orbits of space debris. This paper reports some technologies of DLR, such as the high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) laser pulse, large-aperture telescope, telescope array, multi-static stations receiving signals. DLR with a picosecond laser at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory is also presented. A few hundred laps of space debris laser-ranging measurements have been made. A double-pulse picosecond laser with an average power of 4.2 W, a PRF of 1 kHz, and a wavelength of 532 nm has been implemented successfully in DLR, it’s the first time that DLR technology has reached a ranging precision at the sub-decimeter level. In addition, the characteristics of the picosecond-pulse-width laser transmission with the advantages of transmission in laser ranging were analyzed. With a mode of the pulse-burst picosecond laser having high average power, the DLR system has tracked small debris with a radar cross-section (RCS) of 0.91 m2 at a ranging distance up to 1726.8 km, corresponding to an RCS of 0.1 m2 at a distance of 1000 km. These works are expected to provide new technologies to further improve the performance of DLR.

Abstract:Centimetre and sub-centimetre debris fragments present a significant threat to many operational satellites in Earth orbit. When debris can be tracked, the preferred approach is collision avoidance to slightly alter the orbit of the at-risk satellite, resulting in an along-track displacement which compounds over several orbits. Although numerous strategies for active debris removal and remediation have been proposed, most such methods involve rendezvous maneuvers with targeted pieces of debris prior to some mechanical interaction. While such approaches are appropriate for removing larger objects which are potential sources of further debris, they are unsuitable for application to fragments which are too small to be accurately tracked from Earth and with which a rendezvous would be challenging. This paper investigates the use of photon pressure and ablation from space-based lasers to directly affect the orbits of small debris fragments, both to lower their orbits and lifetimes, and to reduce collision risk with operational satellites. A mission concept is studied which enables the cataloguing of debris shells of small fragments produced after breakup events, while also allowing the encountered fragments to be illuminated by a laser on board the observation satellite(s). The concept takes advantage of a laser’s ability to impart momentum at a distance by employing opportunistic interaction with passing fragments, assuming no prior knowledge of their orbits and no ability to rendezvous. The impact of the mission over a 10-year operational lifetime is simulated statistically by analysing the dynamics of typical encounters and the achievable impact on fragment orbits. The effects of off-beam-axis components of the applied Δ V and its implications for beam tracking are also investigated, along with the effects of extreme laser fluence on fragment attitude.

Abstract:Technologies for the removal of space debris fragments of artificial (man-made) origin from near-Earth space is being proposed in order to provide the security of space flights. The fundamental principle of the proposed method is based on the utilization of intense solar radiation to direct and concentrate at space debris fragments with the aim of creating a plasma braking and transferring the fragment from a circular to an elliptical orbit following its subsequent burn up in the dense layers of the atmosphere. At the same time, the generation of substantial solar radiation is facilitated by a synthesized multi-aperture optical system situated in a heliosynchronous space orbit and permanently oriented towards the Sun.

Abstract:In order to avoid collisions with space debris, the near Earth orbit must be continuously scanned by either ground- or spaced-based facilities. For the low Earth orbit, radar telescopes are the workhorse for this task, especially due to their continuous availability. However, optical observation methods can deliver complementary information, especially towards high accuracy measurements. Passive-optical observations are inexpensive and can yield very precise information about the apparent position of the object in the sky via comparison with background stars. However, the object's distance from the observer is not readily accessible, which constitutes a major drawback of this approach for the precise calculation of the orbital elements. Two experimental methods have been devised to overcome this problem: Using two observatories a few kilometres apart, strictly simultaneous observations of the same object yield an accurate, instantaneous 3D position determination through measurement of the parallax. If only one observatory is available, a pulsed laser can be used in addition to the passive-optical channel to measure the distance to the object, in a similar fashion as used by the satellite laser ranging community. However, compared to conventional laser ranging, a stronger laser and more elaborate tracking algorithms are necessary. The two approaches can also be combined by illuminating the object with a pulsed laser from one observatory and measuring the return times at both observatories. These techniques are explored by German Aerospace Center in Stuttgart using its orbital debris research observatory, in cooperation with the Satellite Laser Ranging station in Graz and the Geodetic Observatory in Wettzell. This contribution will present some of the results and plans for further measurement campaigns.

Abstract:Shanghai SLR station which is one station among International Laser Ranging Network has realized the technology of laser measurement to space debris in 2008. According to characteristics of laser echoes from space debris and the experiences of practical measuring activities, the improvements of laser system, laser detector and spectrum filter are performed for laser detection to space debris . The significant achievements have been made with the routine measurement to space debris and the measured distance is from 500km and 2600km with Radar Cross Section (RCS) of >10m to <0.5m. The development of laser measurement to space debris are underway, such as the near infrared wavelength laser signal, multi-telescopes receiving laser echoes, SNSPD technology, in order to make the better performance of laser ranging to space debris.

Envisioning an Optimal Network of Space-Based Lasers for Orbital Debris Remediation

Abstract:The rapid increase in resident space objects, including satellites and orbital debris, threatens the safety and sustainability of space missions. This paper explores orbital debris remediation using laser ablation with a network of collaborative space-based lasers. A novel delta-v vector analysis framework quantifies the effects of multiple simultaneous laser-to-debris (L2D) engagements by leveraging a vector composition of imparted delta-v vectors. The paper introduces the Concurrent Location-Scheduling Problem (CLSP), which optimizes the placement of laser platforms and schedules L2D engagements to maximize debris remediation capacity. Due to the computational complexity of CLSP, it is decomposed into two sequential subproblems: (1) optimal laser platform locations are determined using the Maximal Covering Location Problem, and (2) a novel integer linear programming-based approach schedules L2D engagements within the network configuration to maximize remediation capacity. Computational experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed framework's effectiveness under various mission scenarios, demonstrating key network functions such as collaborative nudging, deorbiting, and just-in-time collision avoidance. A cost-benefit analysis further explores how varying the number and distribution of laser platforms affects debris remediation capacity, providing insights into optimizing the performance of space-based laser networks.

Laser Ranging on Space Debris with the Changchun SLR Station

Abstract:The Changchun SLR station has upgraded to track space debris in 2014. The system operates with a 60mJ/10ns/500Hz 532.0nm laser (M<1.5) and an optical camera for closed-loop tracking. With this configuration, 466 passes of 224 different space debris targets were obtained during 19 terminator sessions, each about 1.5h. Target distances are between 460 km and 1800 km, with RCS (radar cross sections) from >15 m down to <1.0 m. Measured range had an average precision of about 1.0 m RMS. The system can be conveniently operated by one person. The presentation will introduce the technical developments and the observation results obtained. By analyzing the laser range data, range residual of about 1~2 meters is obtained.

Abstract:There is a consensus that the increasingly large number of LEO debris objects represents a major threat to both active and defunct satellites and that means a potential runaway collisional cascading. This problem urgently demands to be addressed immediately, since the number of satellites in LEO is also dramatically increasing. Many active space debris removal programs have been proposed and those based on using laser from space appear to be really promising, taking into account that one of the most challenging issues from the orbital standpoint is to guarantee the appropriate accuracy for the laser beams that are shot from space-based LEO trackers. In this work, we propose how to build up space-based laser brooms consisting of a significant number of autonomous LEO trackers aimed at performing surgical local shooting actions to deflect the most dangerous middle-size debris objects into the Atmosphere by means of laser ablation. The precision of these brooms lies in the use of the post-Newtonian equations for the computation of absolute and relative positions and velocities, as well as ranges.

Abstract:Based on the radar equation and system noise characteristics, the maximum detection range model of a space debris laser ranging system at a 1064 nm wavelength is established, taking into account the factors of atmospheric transmission and sky background radiance. Through theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, the influencing factors of atmospheric transmission and sky background radiance are studied, and the influencing factors are normalized into the maximum detection range model by polynomial fitting. The results indicate that a high atmospheric transmission comes from a high altitude and low target zenith angle; a low sky background radiance comes from a small target zenith angle and low solar altitude angle, while the angular distance has no obvious influence on the sky background radiance. The experimental results indicate that the comprehensive accuracy of the maximum detection range model of the system is 86%, and the effectiveness of the model is verified by using a 1064 nm wavelength laser ranging for the debris target with a distance of 700–1100 km and a cross section area of 4–10 m2. The model can be used to evaluate the ability of the space debris laser ranging system at a 1064 nm wavelength.

Abstract:Space debris is a major threat to the satellite infrastructure. A collision with even small particle, e.g. 1 cm of size, can cause a catastrophic event when the parent body, spacecraft or upper stage, will break up into hundreds of trackable fragments. Space debris research helps to discover, monitor and characterize these objects, identify their origin and support their active removal. Surveys with optical telescopes aim to discover new objects for cataloguing and to increase the accuracy of space debris population models. The follow-up observations are performed to improve their orbits or to investigate their physical characteristics. We will present the space debris population, its orbital and physical characteristics and we will discuss the role which the optical telescopes play in space debris research. We will also discuss the adopted astronomical techniques like astrometry, photometry and spectroscopy used in the space debris domain.

Abstract:An accurate knowledge of the satellites, space debris, and other objects orbiting Earth is critical to mission planning and avoiding on-orbit collisions. Numerous ground and space-based space situational awareness platforms have been developed to aid in the identification and tracking of these objects, collectively known as resident space objects. While space situational awareness satellites are ideal for identifying and tracking space debris, many other satellites have sensors that may be able to contribute to space situational awareness. This paper examines the feasibility of leveraging several existing sensor technologies to aid in identifying and tracking resident space objects. Specifically, we investigate how Synthetic Aperture Radars (SARs), laser rangefinders, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) devices, and laser communication devices can provide range measurements between the observing platform and the resident space object. Based on this survey, we believe that investigating the feasibility of utilizing LIDAR devices for RSO ranging is worth further study.
APPARILLO: a fully operational and autonomous staring system for LEO debris detection

Abstract:For safe operation of active space crafts, the space debris population needs to be continuously scanned, to avoid collisions of active satellites with space debris. Especially the low Earth orbit (LEO) shows higher risks of collisions due to the highest density of orbital debris. Laser ranging stations can deliver highly accurate distance measurements of debris objects allowing precise orbit determination and more effective collision avoidance. However, a laser ranging station needs accurate a priori orbit information to track an orbital object. To detect and track unknown orbital objects in LEO, here, a passive optical staring system is developed for autonomous 24/7 operation. The system is weather-sealed and does not require any service to perform observations. To detect objects, a wide-angle imaging system with 10° field of view equipped with an astronomical CCD camera was designed and set up to continuously observe the sky for LEO objects. The system can monitor and process several passing objects simultaneously without limitations. It automatically starts an observation, processes the images and saves the 2D angular measurements of each object as equatorial coordinates in the TDM standard. This allows subsequent initial orbit determination and handover to a laser tracking system. During campaigns at twilight the system detected up to 36 objects per hour, with high detection efficiencies of LEO objects larger than 1 m3. It is shown that objects as small as 0.1 m3 can be detected and that the estimated precision of the measurements is about 0.05° or 7 × the pixel scale.

Abstract:We focus on preventing collisions between debris and debris, for which there is no current, effective mitigation strategy. We investigate the feasibility of using a medium-powered (5 kW) ground-based laser combined with a ground-based telescope to prevent collisions between debris objects in low-Earth orbit (LEO). The scheme utilizes photon pressure alone as a means to perturb the orbit of a debris object. Applied over multiple engagements, this alters the debris orbit sufficiently to reduce the risk of an upcoming conjunction. We employ standard assumptions for atmospheric conditions and the resulting beam propagation. Using case studies designed to represent the properties (e.g. area and mass) of the current debris population, we show that one could significantly reduce the risk of nearly half of all catastrophic collisions involving debris using only one such laser/telescope facility. We speculate on whether this could mitigate the debris fragmentation rate such that it falls below the natural debris re-entry rate due to atmospheric drag, and thus whether continuous long-term operation could entirely mitigate the Kessler syndrome in LEO, without need for relatively expensive active debris removal.
