Abstract:After the Fukushima Daiichi accident, the need to review and investigate the phenomena under severe accident conditions increased. Many international experimental programs were conducted and developed. At Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the QUENCH program was conducted. QUENCH-20 test is one of the latest tests in the QUENCH test matrix and it is the first test equipped with a BWR fuel assembly bundle. It was conducted to investigate the degradation processes of BWR bundle under severe accident conditions and to evaluate hydrogen generation due to Zr, stainless steel and B4C oxidation processes. The modelling of the QUENCH-20 test is challenging to all severe accident codes, due to asymmetric geometry, non-uniform temperature distribution and oxidation processes (exothermic reactions). In this article, the RELAP/SCDAPSIM code was used to evaluate the physical phenomena occurring during the QUENCH-20 test. To realistically reflect physical phenomena 3 different modelling approaches were developed. The article discusses the calculation results of all modelling approaches, in addition to their cons and pros. A better agreement with experiment results was received using the modelling approach where absorber blades were modelled using the SCDAP component “PWR control rod” and fuel channel box, water wings and water channel box were modelled using SCDAP “Shroud” component. This approach can evaluate the hydrogen generation from Zr, stainless steel and B4C oxidation processes. This modelling approach could be applicable to the experiments where the evaluation of B4C oxidation and heat transfer to surrounded components should be evaluated.
