Abstract:In this article, we investigate the problem of panoramic image reflection removal to relieve the content ambiguity between the reflection layer and the transmission scene. Although a partial view of the reflection scene is attainable in the panoramic image and provides additional information for reflection removal, it is not trivial to directly apply this for getting rid of undesired reflections due to its misalignment with the reflection-contaminated image. We propose an end-to-end framework to tackle this problem. By resolving misalignment issues with adaptive modules, the high-fidelity recovery of reflection layer and transmission scenes is accomplished. We further propose a new data generation approach that considers the physics-based formation model of mixture images and the in-camera dynamic range clipping to diminish the domain gap between synthetic and real data. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its applicability for mobile devices and industrial applications.

Abstract:The scattering of light by dielectric particles much larger than the wavelength of incident light is attributed to diffraction, external reflection and outgoing refracted waves. This paper focuses on diffraction and external reflection by faceted particles, which can be calculated semi-analytically based on physical optics. Three approximate methods; the surface-integral method (SIM), the volume-integral method (VIM), and the diffraction plus reflection pattern from ray optics (DPR) are compared. Four elements of the amplitude scattering matrix in the SIM and the VIM are presented in an explicit form. Of interest is that diffraction and external reflection are separable in the SIM, whereas they are combined in the VIM. A feature of zero forward reflection is noticed in the SIM. The applicability of the DPR method is restricted to particles with random orientations. In the manner of van de Hulst, we develop a new technique to compute the reflection pattern of randomly oriented convex particles using spheres with the same refractive index, resulting in an improvement in the precision of the reflection calculation in near-forward and near-backward directions. The accuracy of the aforementioned three methods is investigated by comparing their results with those from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method for hexagonal particles at the refractive index of 1.3+i1.0. For particles with fixed orientations, it is found that the SIM and the VIM are comparable in accuracy and applicable when the size parameter is on the order of 20. The ray-spreading effect on the phase function is evident from the results of various size parameters. For randomly oriented particles, the DPR is more efficient than the SIM and the VIM.
Single Image Reflection Removal with Absorption Effect

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the absorption effect for the problem of single image reflection removal. We show that the absorption effect can be numerically approximated by the average of refractive amplitude coefficient map. We then reformulate the image formation model and propose a two-step solution that explicitly takes the absorption effect into account. The first step estimates the absorption effect from a reflection-contaminated image, while the second step recovers the transmission image by taking a reflection-contaminated image and the estimated absorption effect as the input. Experimental results on four public datasets show that our two-step solution not only successfully removes reflection artifact, but also faithfully restores the intensity distortion caused by the absorption effect. Our ablation studies further demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance on the recovery of overall intensity and has good model generalization capacity. Abstract:Images often suffer from low visual quality due to poor imaging conditions such as low light or hazy weather. The haze imaging model is widely used in contrast enhancement in daylight condition with haze, while the retinex model is universal for low-light conditions. Although their forms and applications are different, they can be unified into a more general form through the proposed observation. Based on this model, the authors can estimate the reflection of the scene more accurately in more complex imaging conditions. In this study, the authors propose a simple but effective method for estimating the reflection and enhancing the image contrast based on a general imaging model. To preserve the image details and control contrast, the authors introduce dark boundary and bright boundary to handle the high-light and low-light conditions, and a guided structure-preserving optimization algorithm is proposed to estimate them. After obtaining the dark and bright boundaries, the reflection is calculated and the image is enhanced accordingly. Different from previous approaches, which were designed for specific applications, the proposed method can be used for more diverse imaging conditions. Experiments show that the proposed method can be applied to many poor imaging conditions and maintain good performance.

Abstract:Reciprocity is a fundamental symmetry of Maxwell's equations. It is known that reciprocity imposes constraints on transmission, absorption, and emission. Here, we reveal reciprocity constraints on reflection. We determine the sets of all attainable reflection coefficients of n-port scattering matrices with prescribed singular values, both with and without assuming reciprocity. Their difference establishes reciprocity constraints and nonreciprocal behaviors. As an application, we examine the conditions for all-zero reflections. Our results deepen the understanding of reciprocity in optics.
Mirror-3DGS: Incorporating Mirror Reflections into 3D Gaussian Splatting

Abstract:3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has marked a significant breakthrough in the realm of 3D scene reconstruction and novel view synthesis. However, 3DGS, much like its predecessor Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), struggles to accurately model physical reflections, particularly in mirrors that are ubiquitous in real-world scenes. This oversight mistakenly perceives reflections as separate entities that physically exist, resulting in inaccurate reconstructions and inconsistent reflective properties across varied viewpoints. To address this pivotal challenge, we introduce Mirror-3DGS, an innovative rendering framework devised to master the intricacies of mirror geometries and reflections, paving the way for the generation of realistically depicted mirror reflections. By ingeniously incorporating mirror attributes into the 3DGS and leveraging the principle of plane mirror imaging, Mirror-3DGS crafts a mirrored viewpoint to observe from behind the mirror, enriching the realism of scene renderings. Extensive assessments, spanning both synthetic and real-world scenes, showcase our method's ability to render novel views with enhanced fidelity in real-time, surpassing the state-of-the-art Mirror-NeRF specifically within the challenging mirror regions. Our code will be made publicly available for reproducible research.

Abstract:This work is related to billiards and their applications in geometric optics. It is known that perfectly invisible bodies with mirror surface do not exist. It is, therefore, natural to search for bodies that are, in a sense, close to invisible. We introduce a visibility index of a body measuring the mean angle of deviation of incident light rays, and derive a lower estimate for this index. This estimate is a function of the body’s volume and of the minimal radius of a ball containing the body. This result is far from being final and opens a possibility for further research.

Abstract:A coherent definition of the reflection and transmission factors at a plane interface separating two uniaxial crystals is proposed, from the photons impulsion-energy 4-vectors conservation. This definition, different from the classical electromagnetic one, is compatible with the completely resolved extended Fermat's principle of the geometric optics for extraordinary luminous rays inside uniaxial media, and allows the exact calculation of the transmission factors at the plane interface for any practical configuration, combining all possible optical axes and anisotropy factors variations. Furthermore, this particular technique points out the existence of quasi-particles strongly associated to the photons, whose behaviour is highly correlated to the photons transmission/reflection possibilities.

Abstract:Light reflection from an optically smooth yet atomically rough film on a smooth solid substrate formed by deposition or erosion is a convenient source of information on morphology and chemical makeup of the film. We show that changes in optical reflectivity for s-polarized (TE mode) and p-polarized (TM mode) components, defined as (r(p) - r(p0))/r(p0) - (r(s) - r(s0))/r(s0) equivalent to Delta(p) - Delta(s) induced by such a film, are generally related to structural and chemical properties of such a film through a mean-field theory. Here, r(p0) and r(s0) are the reflectivities of the substrate, and r(p) and r(s) are the reflectivities when the film is added. According to the theory, Delta(p) - Delta(s) consists of a term that is proportional to the thickness of the rough portion of the film, a term that is proportional to the density of unit cells embedded in terraces, and a term that is proportional to the density of unit cells situated at step edges. The proportionality constants are functions of the overall thickness and chemical makeup of the film. We apply the theory to the analysis of a wide range of growth and adsorption experiments studied with the oblique-incidence reflectivity difference technique.

Abstract:The study of a Gaussian laser beam interacting with an optical prism, both through reflection and transmission, provides a technical tool to examine deviations from the optical path as dictated by geometric optics principles. These deviations encompass alterations in the reflection and refraction angles, as predicted by the reflection and Snell laws, along with lateral displacements in the case of total internal reflection. The analysis of the angular distributions of both the reflected and transmitted beams allows us to understand the underlying causes of these deviations and displacements, and it aids in formulating analytic expressions that are capable of characterizing these optical phenomena. The study also extends to the examination of transverse symmetry breaking, which is a phenomenon observed in the laser beam as it traverses the oblique interface of the prism. It is essential to underscore that this analytical overview does not strive to function as an exhaustive literature review of these optical phenomena. Instead, its primary objective is to provide a comprehensive and self-referential treatment, as well as give universal analytical formulas intended to facilitate experimental validations or applications in various technological contexts.

A New Slicing Method Based on The Principle of Refraction and Reflection

Abstract:To overcome the disadvantage of low contrast in the images taken with the traditional slicing method of reverse engineering, a novel slicing method of reverse engineering based on the principle of refraction and reflection of a prism is proposed to improve the contrast of the cross-sectional images. According to the reflectivity of the object, one of the illuminating methods - straight illuminating or inclined illuminating - is adopted to get the sharp contrast images of bright object in dark background, or dark object in bright background. To adjust geometrical distortions caused by the refraction and reflection of the prism, a mathematical transformation model is set up to correct the image by means of software. This method has been applied to some cases of reverse measuring. The research confirms that this new slicing method has not only the advantage of high contrast, but also the clear and reliable contours of the cross-sectional images, what's more, there is no need of contrasting filling materials. It is hopeful that this method will play a great role in the reverse measuring of mechanical parts and models.

The double reflection of rays in the Savart polariscope is analyzed and discussed on the basis of the Snell law. The double reflection formulae of the extraordinary ray and the ordinary ray are given. Abstract:In this paper we show for the first time the phenomenon of negative reflection in a simple mechanical structure. The latter is a grating of fixed inclusions embedded in a linear elastic matrix. Numerical analyses for out-of-plane shear waves demonstrate that there exist frequencies at which most of the incident energy is reflected at negative angles. The effect is symmetric with respect to a line that is not parallel to the normal direction to the grating structure. Simulations at different angles of incidence and computations of the energy fluxes show that negative reflection is achievable in a wide range of loading conditions.
