Abstract:Three oscillation welding modes, namely non-oscillation mode (N-mode), circular oscillation mode (C-mode) and infinite oscillation mode (I-mode) were compared to investigate the effect of oscillation mode on porosity. A numerical model considering multiple reflections and different oscillation modes was established to clarify the bubble formation and migration process for laser welding of medium-thick Al alloy, where the effects of energy distribution, keyhole behavior and melt flow on the pores under three different laser oscillation paths were discussed. The max energy densities of N-mode, C-mode, and I-mode welding were 1466 J/mm 2 , 173 J/mm 2 , 124 J/mm 2 , respectively. In laser oscillation welding, the stability of the keyhole was improved due to the reduced effect of recoil pressure at lower laser energy input, and the periodic oscillation also weakened the spontaneous instability of the keyhole, which reduced the probability of bubble formation, the number of bubbles produced was reduced from 141 under N-mode to 121 under C-mode and 104 under I-mode. The higher linear velocity of the laser beam during oscillation welding was found to improve the stirring effect of the keyhole on the molten pool and was beneficial for bubble escape. In addition, during oscillation welding, the clockwise flow area at the bottom of the molten pool decreased while the counterclockwise flow area at the top increased, which further promoted bubble escape, compared to 44 % under N-mode welding, the bubble escape ratio increased to 55 % and 90 % for C-mode and I-mode welding, respectively. In comparison, the higher keyhole stability, longer keyhole swing distance, smaller clockwise flow area at the bottom of molten pool and more significant degassing effect of keyhole enabled infinite oscillation welding to be most effective in porosity suppression of aluminum alloy. The experimental porosity ratio exhibited a decline in sequence under N-mode, C-mode, and I-mode, while the simulation porosity ratio demonstrated a similar decline trend.
