Abstract:The growing demand for electricity and the increasing size of the carbon footprint of data centers worldwide bring a severe challenge to sustainable development of human civilization. The cooling energy consumption takes up around 30–50% of the total consumption of data centers due to the inefficient cooling system. Free cooling is an effective solution for reducing the power consumption of cooling systems. This paper reviews the advancements of data center free cooling mainly focusing on configuration features and performances. Three kinds of free cooling methods, airside free cooling, waterside free cooling and heat pipe free cooling are discussed and performance characteristics of each are analyzed. Further, the criteria of performance evaluation for free cooling of data centers are summarized, and an overview of free cooling systems based on these criteria is demonstrated in order to help researchers acquire the latest developments in this area.

Abstract:The increasing energy consumption of data centers has become a global concern. Over 30% of the total energy use in a data center is consumed by the cooling system and it is necessary to reduce this consumption by efficient cooling techniques. Free cooling is an alternative method, which means utilizing natural cold source when the outdoor temperature is lower than the indoor temperature to achieve energy-saving. Thermosyphon and its integrated system have distinct advantages over other free cooling methods and have great application potential. In this paper, the states of the art are reviewed and overviews are presented for thermosyphon and its integrated system, respectively. The features of existing designs are compared and shortcomings of current studies are concluded. This paper will be helpful for researchers in this field and promote the application of this new free cooling method.
Enough Hot Air: The Role of Immersion Cooling

Abstract:Air cooling is the traditional solution to chill servers in data centers. However, the continuous increase in global data center energy consumption combined with the increase of the racks' power dissipation calls for the use of more efficient alternatives. Immersion cooling is one such alternative. In this paper, we quantitatively examine and compare air cooling and immersion cooling solutions. The examined characteristics include power usage efficiency (PUE), computing and power density, cost, and maintenance overheads. A direct comparison shows a reduction of about 50% in energy consumption and a reduction of about two-thirds of the occupied space, by using immersion cooling. In addition, the higher heat capacity of used liquids in immersion cooling compared to air allows for much higher rack power densities. Moreover, immersion cooling requires less capital and operational expenditures. However, challenging maintenance procedures together with the increased number of IT failures are the main downsides. By selecting immersion cooling, cloud providers must trade-off the decrease in energy and cost and the increase in power density with its higher maintenance and reliability concerns. Finally, we argue that retrofitting an air-cooled data center with immersion cooling will result in high costs and is generally not recommended.

Abstract:The rise in demand for cloud computing services has thrown sharply into focus the subject of energy efficiency and cooling methods. The words “green” and “computing” can often translate into commercial and production successes, vendors and consumers alike are keen to optimize the services offered through cloud data centers as much as possible. While various existing methods help in bringing down rising temperatures of servers operating in cloud data center infrastructure, most authors would agree that pushing in cold air requires energy to be fed to cooling equipment and the associated infrastructure. Based upon existing research conducted, we approached the problem in a new light—concentrating on server utilization to regulate the temperature. We introduce Mean Utilization Factor concept that allows detecting and regulating the amount of cool air that is to be channeled in and around the servers within a cloud data center to bring down the operating temperature.

Abstract:iDataCool is an HPC architecture jointly developed by the University of Regensburg and the IBM Research and Development Lab Böblingen. It is based on IBM's iDataPlex platform, whose air-cooling solution was replaced by a custom water-cooling solution that allows for cooling water temperatures of 70C/158F. The system is coupled to an adsorption chiller by InvenSor that operates efficiently at these temperatures. Thus a significant portion of the energy spent on HPC can be recovered in the form of chilled water, which can then be used to cool other parts of the computing center. We describe the architecture of iDataCool and present benchmarks of the cooling performance and the energy (reuse) efficiency.

Abstract:In order to increase data centers' efficiency and performance, a proper cooling system should be applied. This article provides a comprehensive assessment which explores current cooling optimization technologies for data centers. Standard traditional technologies like air conditioning, free cooling, and liquid cooling are investigated. Their limitations as well as proposed improvements are thoroughly discussed. The article also delves into underfloor and overhead air supply technologies, presenting their advantages and drawbacks. The review introduces novel approaches at the rack level cooling, including baffles, variable airflow management, and optimal server placement. Key findings stress the efficacy of optimized airflow systems and innovative rack-level cooling, underlining their role in reducing energy consumption and enhancing overall performance. Notably, potential energy savings of up to 67.2% compared to traditional methods are demonstrated. The adoption of advanced cooling technologies, such as direct and indirect natural cooling, liquid-cooling cold plates, submersion, heat pipe, and thermosiphon-based cooling, exhibits promising energy efficiency gains and reduced Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) values. Research into content-specific efficiency enhancements, adaptable energy-saving tactics, and all-encompassing server power consumption models is necessary. To work toward future sustainable, energy-efficient data centers, researchers should investigate how CRACs and server fans interact, find ways to integrate thermal and power management, and how artificial intelligence can be used to cool servers in an eco-friendly way.

Abstract:In the age of machine learning, cryptocurrency mining, and seemingly infinite data storage capacity enabled by cloud computing, the environmental costs of ubiquitous computing in modern life are obscured by the sheer complexity of infrastructures and supply chains involved in even the simplest of digital transactions. How does computation contribute to the warming of the planet? As information technology (IT) capacity demands continue to trend upward, what are some of the ecological obstacles that must be overcome to accommodate an ever-expanding, carbon-hungry Cloud? How do these material impacts play out in everyday life, behind the scenes, where servers, fiber optic cables, and technicians facilitate cloud services? This case study draws on firsthand ethnographic research in data centers—sprawling libraries of computer servers that facilitate everything from email to commerce—to identify some of the far-reaching and tangled environmental impacts of computation and data-storage infrastructures. It surveys a range of empirical accounts of server technicians to illustrate on-the-ground examples of material and ecological factors that permeate everyday life in the Cloud. These examples include air conditioning and thermal management, water cycling, and the disposal of e-waste. By attending to the culture of workplace practice and the behaviors and training of technicians in data centers, this case study reveals that the Cloud is not fully automated, nor is it hyperrational; emotion, instinct, and human judgment are enlisted to keep servers running. This case study closes with a speculative vignette that scales up from various local impacts to a planetary framework, sketching some of the particular ways that computation contributes to climate change and the Anthropocene.

Abstract:At present, a major concern regarding data centers is their extremely high energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. However, because of the over-provisioning of resources, the utilization of existing data centers is, in fact, remarkably low, leading to considerable energy waste. Therefore, over the past few years, many research efforts have been devoted to increasing efficiency for the construction of green data centers. The goal of these efforts is to efficiently utilize available resources and to reduce energy consumption and thermal cooling costs. In this paper, we provide a survey of the state-of-the-art research on green data center techniques, including energy efficiency, resource management, thermal control and green metrics. Additionally, we present a detailed comparison of the reviewed proposals. We further discuss the key challenges for future research and highlight some future research issues for addressing the problem of building green data centers.

Abstract:As data centers increasingly become the backbone of the digital age, managing their substantial energy consumption and mitigating heat generation are paramount. This paper focuses on direct liquid cooling as a transformative technology for enhancing energy efficiency and operational safety in high-density computing environments. Significant advancements and persisting challenges in this field have been identified by analyzing various direct liquid cooling methodologies including immersion, spray/jet, and microchannel cooling. Comparative analysis of these systems reveals their potential to substantially lower thermal resistances and improve energy utilization. Despite these advancements, the research highlights persistent challenges such as integration complexities and scalability issues. Recommendations for future research directions to improve the efficiency and ability of direct liquid cooling applications in data centers were concluded, emphasizing the need for user-friendly and cost-effective solutions, comprehensive guidelines for cooling method selection, and hybrid cooling systems. It also recommends advanced energy management strategies such as real-time power adjustment that dynamically matches energy supply with computational demand to optimize efficiency. These contributions underscore the importance of advancing data center cooling technologies to meet future demands.

Abstract:The escalating demand for computational power and data storage has led to a substantial increase in the number and scale of data centers (DCs) worldwide. Due to characteristics of high heat flux and reliable operational security, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to solve the problem of DC cooling and waste heat recovery. Direct liquid cooling technology is one of the most promising energy-saving cooling technologies due to its advantages of high cooling efficiency, low noise, and reduction of hot spots. Waste heat recovery is also one of the effective ways to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions due to higher coolant temperature. This study provides a comprehensive review of direct liquid cooling and waste heat recovery technologies for DCs that have been published in high level journals in recent years. Herein, the primary innovation and contribution of this review paper is its comprehensive coverage of advanced/emerging cooling technologies for DCs including immersion cooling and spray cooling, and its broad overview of global trends in performance, energy consumption, power density, and PUE of related systems. In addition, this review addresses the issue of heat recovery and reuse in DCs with an overview of common waste heat recovery technologies such as heating, district heating networks, cooling supply and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) are summarized and then compared and analyzed their application scenarios, advantages and disadvantages. Through the comprehensive review of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies for direct liquid cooling and waste heat recovery, this review aims to provide a thorough understanding of current landscape and future direction of sustainable and high-performance DC solutions.

Abstract:Due to the growth of communication networks, energy consumption in information and communication technology industries is increasing dramatically. Among these industries, data centers are operating with a large number of processors and other components, which, due to heavy processing and mass data transmission, in addition to consuming high electrical power, also cause high thermal losses. Since water cooling systems are used for cooling different parts of these centers as well as for cooling the electric power generation unit, these centers are among the major consumers of water and electricity resources. In this article, while examining the important factors affecting water consumption in data centers, useful methods are suggested to reduce the consumption of electrical energy and water. Optimizing energy consumption in data centers is possible in three parts: routing, servicing and use of cooling equipment. For all three parts, improvement methods are suggested in this article. For this purpose, an optimization problem is designed and an algorithm is presented to solve it. In the proposed solution, an energy-smart method based on SDN technology is used for routing, virtual machines equipped with the possibility of reducing power consumption in no-load conditions are used for servicing, and two types of water-cooled and air-cooled systems are used for cooling equipment. is used. The simulation results show that depending on the cooling system, the proposed method reduces water consumption between 24 and 32% compared to the case where the proposed solution is not used.

At the same time, with the development of new high-energy chips, the traditional cooling methods have been unable to meet the requirements of IT equipment cooling, so how to reduce the energy consumption of data centers, especially the cooling system energy consumption, and to meet the cooling requirements of data centers with high heat flux density is becoming the focus of research in the field of data centers. In order to solve the data center cooling system of high energy consumption and high heat flow density needs, immersion cooling technology came into being, this paper is mainly on the data center immersion cooling technology research and use of the current situation is introduced and explained, compared to the single-phase immersion cooling technology and two-phase immersion cooling technology cooling principle, the current state of development and use of the prospects for elaboration, while the data center immersion cooling system waste heat utilization is explored, providing readers with a wide range of data center cooling system. At the same time, the utilization of waste heat in data center immersion cooling system is discussed, providing readers with extensive and detailed background knowledge of data center immersion cooling technology.

Abstract:Traditionally, the development of computing systems has been focused on performance improvements driven by the demand of applications from consumer, scientific and business domains. However, the ever increasing energy consumption of computing systems has started to limit further performance growth due to overwhelming electricity bills and carbon dioxide footprints. Therefore, the goal of the computer system design has been shifted to power and energy efficiency. To identify open challenges in the area and facilitate future advancements it is essential to synthesize and classify the research on power and energy-efficient design conducted to date. In this work we discuss causes and problems of high power / energy consumption, and present a taxonomy of energy-efficient design of computing systems covering the hardware, operating system, virtualization and data center levels. We survey various key works in the area and map them to our taxonomy to guide future design and development efforts. This chapter is concluded with a discussion of advancements identified in energy-efficient computing and our vision on future research directions.

Abstract:The highlighted energy consumption of Internet data center (IDC) in China has become a pressing issue with the implementation of the Chinese dual carbon strategic goal. This paper provides a comprehensive review of cooling technologies for IDC, including air cooling, free cooling, liquid cooling, thermal energy storage cooling and building envelope. Firstly, the environmental requirements for the computer room and the main energy consumption items for IDC are analyzed. The evaluation indicators and government policies for promoting green IDC are also summarized. Next, the traditional cooling technology is compared to four new cooling technologies to find effective methods to maximize energy efficiency in IDC. The results show that traditional cooling consumes a significant amount of energy and has low energy efficiency. The application of free cooling can greatly improve the energy efficiency of IDC, but its actual implementation is highly dependent on geographical and climatic conditions. Liquid cooling, on the other hand, has higher energy efficiency and lower PUE compared to other cooling technologies, especially for high heat density servers. However, it is not yet mature and its engineering application is not widespread. In addition, thermal energy storage (TES) based cooling offers higher energy efficiency but must be coupled with other cooling technologies. Energy savings can also be achieved through building envelope improvements. Considering the investment and recovery period for IDC, it is essential to seek efficient cooling solutions that are suitable for IDC and take into account factors such as IDC scale, climate conditions, maintenance requirements, etc. This paper serves as a reference for the construction and development of green IDC in China.

Abstract:To expedite the achievement of energy conservation and consumption reduction in data centers, it is essential to not only utilize ambient energy effectively and maximally but also to enhance the energy efficiency of mechanical refrigeration. The synergy between free cooling and mechanical refrigeration plays a crucial role in reducing the power usage effectiveness (PUE) of data centers. This, in turn, maximizes the energy efficiency of the cooling systems, ensuring their safe, stable, and efficient operation. This paper synthesizes research on various aspects of cooling systems for data centers, including air distribution, supply and return water temperature, system components and configurations, and intelligent management. The analysis provides a vital reference for the development of environmentally friendly and efficient cooling systems in data centers.

Abstract:The end of Dennard scaling and the slowing of Moore's Law has put the energy use of datacenters on an unsustainable path. Datacenters are already a significant fraction of worldwide electricity use, with application demand scaling at a rapid rate. We argue that substantial reductions in the carbon intensity of datacenter computing are possible with a software-centric approach: by making energy and carbon visible to application developers on a fine-grained basis, by modifying system APIs to make it possible to make informed trade offs between performance and carbon emissions, and by raising the level of application programming to allow for flexible use of more energy efficient means of compute and storage. We also lay out a research agenda for systems software to reduce the carbon footprint of datacenter computing.
Energy Savings of Hybrid Dew-Point Evaporative Cooler and Micro-Channel Separated Heat Pipe Cooling Systems for Computer Data Centers

Abstract:The world has entered the Age of Big Data with large data centers consuming large amounts of energy. 30%–50% of the energy delivered to a typical data center is consumed by the space cooling system. Dew-point evaporative coolers and heat pipes both utilizing natural cold resources can significantly reduce these refrigeration costs. This paper presents two hybrid cooling systems combining dew-point evaporative coolers with heat pipes for computing and data center cooling systems. The energy-saving potentials of two these hybrid cooling systems were analysed through calculations with comparisons with a traditional vapour compression refrigeration system. The results show that the average annual coefficients of performance (COP) of the ideal hybrid refrigeration systems are 33 and 34 which leads to annual energy savings of nearly 90% compared with vapour compression refrigeration.

Abstract:The evaporation process of liquid air leads to a high heat absorption capacity, which is expected to be a viable cooling technology for high-density data center. Therefore, this paper proposes a liquid air-based cooling system for immersion cooling in data centers. The proposed cooling system not only directly cools the data center, but also possesses the capability of power generation through direct expansion of the high-pressure air, which can be utilized again to cool the data center. A mathematical model of data-center immersion cooling using liquid air energy storage is developed to investigate its thermodynamic and economic performance. Furthermore, the genetic algorithm is utilized to maximize the cost effectiveness of a liquid air-based cooling system taking the time-varying cooling demand into account. The research results indicate that the proposed system exhibits optimal levelized cost of cooling and cooling capacity, which are $0.245/MJ and 0.544 MJ/kg, respectively. In this case, the data center's pPUE and footprint density are 1.006 and 416.8 kW/m 2 , representing a 5 % reduction and a 159 % increase, respectively, compared to traditional evaporative cooling towers. Additionally, using liquid air for data center cooling can reduce noise pollution and the consumption of water. Considering the time-varying characteristics of data center utilization, understanding the dynamic thermal response characteristics of this system and implementing efficient control techniques will contribute to the further promotion of this technology.
