Abstract:Recent experiments claimed that the enhancement of catalytic reaction rates occurs via the reduction of activation barriers driven by non-equilibrium (``hot'') electrons in plasmonic metal nanoparticles. These experiments place plasmonic photo-catalysis as a promising path for enhancing the efficiency of various chemical reactions. Here, we argue that what appears to be photo-catalysis is in fact thermo-catalysis, driven by the well-known plasmon-enhanced ability of illuminated metallic nanoparticles to serve as heat sources. Specifically, we point to some of the most important papers in the field, and show that a simple theory of illumination-induced heating can explain the extracted experimental data to remarkable agreement, with minimal to no fit parameters. We further show that any small temperature difference between the photocatalysis experiment and a control experiment performed under uniform external heating is effectively amplified by the exponential sensitivity of the reaction, and very likely to be interpreted incorrectly as ``hot'' electron effects.

Abstract:Our Comment [Sivan et al., Science 2019] (as well as its longer version [Dubi, Un, & Sivan, ArXiv 2019], and the supporting theoretical studies [Dubi and Sivan, ArXiv 2018]) on recent attempts to distinguish thermal and non-thermal ("hot carrier") contributions to plasmon-assisted photocatalysis [Zhou et al., Science 2018] initiated a re-evaluation process of previous literature on the topic within the nano-plasmonics and chemistry communities. The Response of Zhou et al. attempts to defend the claims of the original paper. In this manuscript, we show that the Response presents additional data that further validates our central criticism: inaccurately measured temperatures (that are lower than the actual temperature of the catalyst) led Zhou et al. to incorrectly claim conclusive evidence of non-thermal effects. We identify flaws in the experimental setup (e.g. the use of the default settings for the thermal camera and incorrect positioning of the thermometer) that may have led Zhou et al. to make such claims. We further show that the Response contains several factual errors and does not address the technical problems we identified with the data acquisition in [Zhou et al., Science 2018]. We demonstrate that both the Response and the original paper contain additional faults, for example, in the power determination and in the normalization of the rate to the catalyst volume, and exhibit misconceptions regarding the thermo-optic response of metal nanostructures. The burden of proof required by the proposal of a novel physical mechanism has simply not been met, especially when the existing data can be modeled exquisitely by conventional theory.

Abstract:Zhou et al . (Reports, 5 October 2018, p. 69) claim to have proven dominance of “hot” electrons over thermal effects in plasmonic photocatalysis. We identify experimental flaws that caused overestimation of the hot carrier contribution. As an alternative interpretation, we fully reproduce their data using a purely thermal Arrhenius law with a fixed activation energy and intensity-dependent heating.

Moreover, the authors of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.00286" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.00286">arXiv:2009.00286</a> addressed in their comments features that were not present in our paper [ACS Photonics 4 (11), 2759-2781 (2017)]. In this document we go through the comments made in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.00286" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.00286">arXiv:2009.00286</a>, which we found to be wrong and misleading.

Abstract:Sivan et al . claim that the methods used to distinguish thermal from hot carrier effects in our recent report are inaccurate and that our data can be explained by a purely thermal mechanism with a fixed activation energy. This conclusion is invalid, because they substantially misinterpret the emissivity of the photocatalyst and assume a linear intensity–dependent temperature in their model that is unrealistic.

Abstract:Several chemical reactions catalyzed by plasmonic nanoparticles show enhanced rates under visible-light-excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles. But it has been argued that there is an associated photothermal effect that can complicate the analysis and/or interpretation of the nature of the role played by plasmon excitation. This Viewpoint discusses this dilemma and provides some best practices for accounting for photothermal contributions in plasmon-excitation-driven chemistry. A classification of plasmonic chemistry into plasmonic photocatalysis and plasmonic photosynthesis is also proposed. It is argued that photosynthetic reactions, which require a Gibb's free energy input, constitute an ultimate test of the non-thermal, photochemical action of plasmon excitation.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing interest in the usage of mm-scale composites of plasmonic nanoparticles for enhancing the rates of chemical reactions; the effect was shown recently to be predominantly associated with the elevated temperature caused by illumination. Here, we study the parametric dependence of the temperature distribution in these samples, and provide analytic expressions for simple cases. We show that since these systems are usually designed to absorb all the incoming light, the temperature distribution in them is weakly-dependent on the illumination spectrum, pulse duration, particle shape, size and density. Thus, changes in these parameters yield at most modest quantitative changes. We also show that the temperature distribution is linearly dependent on the beam radius and the thermal conductivity of the host. Finally, we study the sensitivity of the reaction rate to these parameters as a function of the activation energy and interpret various previous experimental reports. These results would simplify the optimization of photocatalysis experiments, as well as for other energy-related applications based on light harvesting for heat generation.

Abstract:The debate surrounding the roles of thermal and non-thermal pathways in plasmonic catalysis has captured the attention of researchers and sparked vibrant discussions within the scientific community. In this review, we embark on a thorough exploration of this intriguing discourse, starting from fundamental principles and culminating in a detailed understanding of the divergent viewpoints. We probe into the core of the debate by elucidating the behavior of excited charge carriers in illuminated plasmonic nanostructures, which serves as the foundation for the two opposing schools of thought. We present the key arguments and evidence put forth by proponents of both the non-thermal and thermal pathways, providing a perspective on their respective positions. Beyond the theoretical divide, we discussed the evolving methodologies used to unravel these mechanisms. We discuss the use of Arrhenius equations and their variations, shedding light on the ensuing debates about their applicability. Our review emphasizes the significance of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), investigating its role in collective charge oscillations and the decay dynamics that influence catalytic processes. We also talked about the nuances of activation energy, exploring its relationship with the nonlinearity of temperature and light intensity dependence on reaction rates. Additionally, we address the intricacies of catalyst surface temperature measurements and their implications in understanding light-triggered reaction dynamics. The review further discusses wavelength-dependent reaction rates, kinetic isotope effects, and competitive electron transfer reactions, offering an all-inclusive view of the field. This review not only maps the current landscape of plasmonic photocatalysis but also facilitates future explorations and innovations to unlock the full potential of plasmon-mediated catalysis, where synergistic approaches could lead to different vistas in chemical transformations.
The photothermal nonlinearity in plasmon-assisted photocatalysis

Abstract:Understanding the intricate relation between illumination and temperature in metallic nano-particles is crucial for elucidating the role of illumination in various physical processes which rely on plasmonic enhancement but are also sensitive to temperature. Recent studies have shown that the temperature rise in optically-thick ensembles of metal nanoparticles under intense illumination is dominated by the thermal conductivity of the host, rather than by the optical properties of the metal or the host. Here, we show that the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of the host dominates the nonlinear photothermal response of these systems. In particular, this dependence typically causes the temperature rise to become strongly sublinear, reaching even several tens of percent. We then show that this can explain experimental observations in several recent plasmon-assisted photocatalysis experiments. This shows that any claim for dominance of non-thermal electrons in plasmon-assisted photocatalysis must account first for this photothermal nonlinear mechanism.

Abstract:In a recent paper~[Nature Catalysis 3, 573 (2020)], Robatjazi {\em et al.} demonstrate hydrodefluorination on Al nanocrystals decorated by Pd islands under illumination and under external heating. They conclude that photocatalysis accomplishes the desired transformation \ce{CH3F + D2 -> CH3D + DF} efficiently and selectively due to "hot" electrons, as evidenced by an illumination-induced reduction of the activation energy. Although some of the problems identified in prior work by the same group have been addressed, scrutiny of the data in~[Nature Catalysis 3, 573 (2020)] raises doubts about both the methodology and the central conclusions. First, we show that the thermal control experiments in~[Nature Catalysis 3, 573 (2020)] do not separate thermal from "hot electron" contributions, and therefore any conclusions drawn from these experiments are invalid. We then show that an improved thermal control implies that the activation energy of the reaction does not change, and that an independent purely thermal calculation (based solely on the sample parameters provided in the original manuscript) explains the measured data perfectly. For the sake of completeness, we also address technical problems in the calibration of the thermal camera, an unjustifiable disqualification of some of the measured data, as well as concerning aspects of the rest of the main results, including the mass spectrometry approach used to investigate the selectivity of the reaction, and claims about the stoichiometry and reaction order. All this shows that the burden of proof for involvement of hot electrons has not been met.

Abstract:A growing number of reports have demonstrated plasmon-assisted electrochemical reactions, though debate exists around the mechanisms underlying the enhanced activity. Here we address the impact of plasmonic photothermal heating with cyclic voltammetry measurements and finite-element simulations. We find that plasmonic photothermal heating causes a reduction in the hysteresis of the anodic and cathodic waves of the voltammograms along with an increase in mass-transport limiting current density due to convection induced by a temperature gradient. At slow scan rates, a temperature difference as low as 1 K between the electrode surface and bulk electrolytic solution enhances the current density greater than 100%. Direct interband excitation of Au exclusively enhances current density by photothermal heating, while plasmon excitation leads to photothermal and nonthermal enhancements. Our study reveals the role of temperature gradients in plasmon-assisted electrochemistry and details a simple control experiment to account for photothermal heating.

Abstract:The size dependence of the photothermal effect of palladium nanocrystals enables the selectivity of the solar powered heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to be finely tailored towards producing either carbon monoxide through the reverse water gas shift reaction, CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O, favored for small nanocrystals or to methane, via the Sabatier methanation reaction, CO2 + 4H2 → CH4 + 2H2O, preferred for larger nanocrystals. Abstract:Plasmonic photocatalysis presents a promising method for light-to-matter conversion. However, most current studies focus on understanding the relative importance of thermal and non-thermal effects while their synergistic effects remained less studied. Here we propose an index, termed overall light effectiveness, to capture the combined impact of these light effects on reactions. By systematic variation of the thickness of catalyst layers, we isolated both thermal and non-thermal contributions and optimized them to achieve maximum light enhancement. We demonstrate the approach using a carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction on titania-supported rhodium nanoparticles as a model reaction system. It shows a generalizable potential in the design of catalyst systems with optimum combinations of heating and light illumination, especially with broadband light illumination such as sunlight, for achieving the most economical light-to-matter conversion in plasmonic catalysis.

Abstract:Plasmonic effects including near-field coupling, light scattering, guided mode through surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET), and thermoplasmonics are extensively used for harnessing inexhaustible solar energy for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Recently, plasmonic hot carrier-driven photocatalysis has received additional attention thanks to its specific selectivity in the catalytic conversion of gas molecules and organic compounds, resulting from the direct injection of hot carriers into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the adsorbate molecule. The excellent light trapping property and high efficiency of hot charge-carrier generation through electromagnetic surface plasmon decay have been identified as the dominant mechanisms that promote energy-intensive chemical reactions at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, understanding the electromagnetic effects of plasmonics and distinguishing them from chemical effects in photocatalysis is challenging. While there exist several reviews underlining the experimental observations of plasmonic effects, this critical review addresses the physical origin of the various plasmon-related phenomena and how they can promote photocatalysis. The conditions under which each plasmonic effect dominates and how to distinguish one from another is also discussed, together with the analysis of the photoconversion efficiency. Finally, future research directions are proposed with the aim to accelerate progress in this field at the interface between chemistry and physics.
Plasmon-Enhanced Catalysis: Distinguishing Thermal and Nonthermal Effects

Abstract:In plasmon-enhanced heterogeneous catalysis, illumination accelerates reaction rates by generating hot carriers and hot surfaces in the constituent nanostructured metals. In order to understand how photogenerated carriers enhance the nonthermal reaction rate, the effects of photothermal heating and thermal gradients in the catalyst bed must be confidently and quantitatively characterized. This is a challenging task considering the conflating effects of light absorption, heat transport, and reaction energetics. Here, we introduce a methodology to distinguish the thermal and nonthermal contributions from plasmon-enhanced catalysts, demonstrated by illuminated rhodium nanoparticles on oxide supports to catalyze the CO2 methanation reaction. By simultaneously measuring the total reaction rate and the temperature gradient of the catalyst bed, the effective thermal reaction rate may be extracted. The residual nonthermal rate of the plasmon-enhanced reaction is found to grow with a superlinear dependence on illumination intensity, and its apparent quantum efficiency reaches ∼46% on a Rh/TiO2 catalyst at a surface temperature of 350 °C. Heat and light are shown to work synergistically in these reactions: the higher the temperature, the higher the overall nonthermal efficiency in plasmon-enhanced catalysis.

Abstract:Plasmonic photocatalytic reactions have been substantially developed. However, the mechanism underlying the enhancement of such reactions is confusing in relevant studies. The plasmonic enhancements of photocatalytic reactions are hard to identify by processing chemically or physically. This review discusses the noteworthy experimental setups or designs for reactors that process various energy transformation paths for enhancing plasmonic photocatalytic reactions. Specially designed experimental setups can help characterize near-field optical responses in inducing plasmons and transformation of light energy. Electrochemical measurements, dark-field imaging, spectral measurements, and matched coupling of wavevectors lead to further understanding of the mechanism underlying plasmonic enhancement. The discussions herein can provide valuable ideas for advanced future studies.

Abstract:A range of chemical reactions occurring on the surfaces of metal nanoparticles exhibit enhanced rates under plasmonic excitation. Recent analyses based on Arrhenius law fitting have argued in favor of a purely photothermal mechanism of enhancement and suggested the lack of an involvement of hot electrons. However, there is a caveat as shown here: under certain scenarios, it is practically impossible to distinguish between a photochemical (non-thermal) effect of plasmonic excitation and a purely photothermal one using a phenomenological Arrhenius fitting of the reaction rates alone.
