Abstract:Doping modifications can endow BiOCl with dramatically improved photocatalytic performance via modifying the electronic structure. Here, the hierarchical Ni-doped BiOCl microflowers self-assembled by 2D nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the as-obtained Ni-doped BiOCl sample presented a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic degradation activity, totally decomposed Rhodamine B aqueous solution (15 mg/L) within 5 min under visible-light irradiation. Based on the experimental and calculated results, the introduction of Ni can narrow the band-gap and form defect energy levels simultaneously, resulted in a red shift in the absorption edge and much stronger absorption in the visible-light range. In addition, Ni-doped BiOCl exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density and a suppressed peak intensity of PL emission, indicating the efficient transportation and suppressed recombination of photoinduced charge carriers. This study sheds light on a possible application of Ni-doped BiOCl in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible-light irradiation and provides a feasible strategy to synthesis of high active Ni-doped BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I) photocatalysts.
Insights into the Enhanced Adsorption/photocatalysis Mechanism of a Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 Nanosheet

Abstract:The composite Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 nanosheet was fabricated by facile precipitation method for the first time. The results of XRD, XPS and FT-IR confirmed the successful construction of heterojunctions. Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 displayed better adsorptive and photocatalytic activity for removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with good stability. Zeta potential and BET analysis suggested that the enhancement of Lewis base sites and large surface area were the reason for the improvement of adsorptive mechanism. On the side of photocatalysis, the better charge separation and visible light utilization in Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 were confirmed by transient photocurrent response, PL spectrum and UV–vis DRS. Moreover, active species trapping experiments and ESR tests indicated that h+ and ·O2− were the main radicals in the photocatalytic system. As the formation of type II heterojunction, band structures were optimized by valence band (VB) and conduct band (CB) offset, which was depth calculated. Due to this optimization and more activity sites generated in the photocatalyst surface, a slight improvement of the ·O2− generation was displayed by quantification test. This work might provide some guidance for synergy of adsorption and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism, and rational construction of type II heterojunctions to solve ever-increasing environmental problems.

Abstract:BiOCl is known as a highly efficient photocatalyst for degradation of pollutants. However, effective methods for fabricating BiOCl nanomaterials with well-defined facets are still lacking. In this work, a facile synthetic method was developed for the fabrication of BiOCl nanodisks with exposed {001} facets. The central feature of this approach was the use of water as the hydrolysis agent and ethylene glycol as the crystal growth inhibitor agent to tune the growth of BiOCl nanomaterial. With this approach, the size and shape of BiOCl nanostructures could be effectively tuned through adjusting the volume ratio of ethylene glycol/H2O. In addition, the mechanism of the crystal growth in this fabrication process was elucidated. The as-prepared BiOCl nanodisks with exposed {001} facets exhibited an excellent photocatalytic activity towards Rhodamine B degradation under both ultraviolet and visible light irradiations. These findings shed light on the deep understanding of formation mechanisms of BiOCl nanodisks and provide an efficient and facile method for the synthesis of high active photocatalyst.

Abstract:Different bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process in different solvents. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and nitrogen adsorption. The prepared sheet-like BiOCl products showed different optical properties, BET surface areas and photocatalytic activities on the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm). More importantly, the as-synthesized BiOCl nanosheets exhibited superior photocatalytic activities compared with commercial BiOCl and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The visible-light-induced degradation of RhB over the as-synthesized BiOCl photocatalysts was mainly ascribed to the photosensitization process and their layered structures.

Abstract:BiOCl photocatalyst with excellent performance has been prepared by a simple liquid-solid phase transition method. Three BiOCl-x (x = 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) photocatalysts were obtained by changing the amount of HCl in the preparation process. The main dominant crystal planes are (001), (002), and (003). Their forbidden bandwidths are reduced to 2.81, 2.89, and 2.84 eV. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectrometry, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrometer, and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The degradation mechanism of BiOCl-x on Rhodamine B(RhB) has been investigated by quenching experiments on active materials. ·O2- was the primary degradation agent. When the dosage of HCl was 0.75 mL, the degradation effect of RhB was the best under the same experimental conditions. In visible light, RhB was almost completely degraded within 15 min, demonstrating an excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency.

Abstract:Porous BiOCl micro-flowers constructed from ultrathin nanosheets with nearly 100% {001} facets exposed were selectively prepared. The exposed {001} facets terminated with a high density of oxygen atoms and are not only favorable for the adsorption of the cationic dye RhB but also can accumulate the photogenerated electrons injected from excited RhB. These electrons can be captured by O(2) and transformed to reactive oxygen species, which possess a strong photooxidative ability to degrade the dye pollutants directly and easily. Therefore, the resultant BiOCl photocatalysts exhibit superior activity for indirect dye photosensitization degradation under visible light, with a rapid degradation rate and high photostability.

Abstract:BiOCl nanosheets with adjustable shape were fabricated by a facile solvothermal method and the photodegradation property towards RhB was further studied. Batch experiments suggest that the BiOCl synthesized using CTAB (BOC-CTAB) as an additive presents the top-flight photoactivity with ca. 99% of removal rate within 20 min under visible light and shows outstanding recyclability and photostability after 3 cycles. The enormous improvement of degradation rate can be ascribed to enhanced visible-light response, narrow band gap and rapid separation rate of charge carriers. Moreover, the trapping tests suggest that the superoxide radical anions (·O2-) are critical reactive oxidation species to boost the photoactivity. This study indicates that the BOC-CTAB can be considered as an exceptional visible-light-driven photocatalyst used in relative environment remediation.

InOCl Nanosheets with Exposed {001} Facets: Synthesis, Electronic Structure and Surprisingly High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:A single-crystalline InOCl nanosheet was synthesized by heating aqueous InCl3 solution on a Si wafer to 400 °C. The as-synthesized InOCl nanosheets are single crystalline, grow along the directions perpendicular to (0 1 0), (2 0 0) facets of the orthorhombic InOCl and are enclosed by {0 0 1} top and down surfaces. Their typical widths, lengths and thicknesses are in the range of 1.4 to 2.5 μm, 8.4 to 16.7 μm, and 42 to 71 nm, respectively. The InOCl nanosheets with exposed {0 0 1} facets show higher photocatalytic activity than Degussa P25 TiO2 for degradation of organic dyes. The calculated band structure of InOCl confirms that it has an indirect band-gap. The highest occupied orbital is hybridization of Cl 3p and O 2p states, and the In 5s state dominates the lowest unoccupied orbital. The crystal structure of InOCl is shown, and its excellent photocatalytic activity was attributed to their open crystal structure and indirect optical transitions.
Unveiling the activity origin of ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Ultrathin layered semiconductors have attracted particular attention for various photocatalytic applications, while their surface-structure changes under reaction conditions have been rarely concerned. Herein, the dynamic evolutions of surface atomic and electronic structures on ultrathin BiOCl photocatalysts were firstly explored by combining synchronous-illumination X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SI-XPS) with X-ray diffraction (SI-XRD). The related results clearly reveal that the exposed {001} facets of ultrathin BiOCl are terminated with chlorine atoms instead of generally considered oxygen atoms. Under steady states, the outward migration of chlorine atoms on BiOCl (001) surfaces resulted in the formation of Bi, Cl, and O atoms with multiple-valence states and length decrease of ClO and BiO bond within the lattice phase. Under excitation states, the surface chlorine atoms return back to the lattice phase, leading to the elongation of BiCl and BiO bonds and the valence-state normalization of Bi, Cl, and O atoms. Owing to these significant atomic- and electronic-structure changes, ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets exhibit the prominent activity enhancement (21.4 μmol g−1 h−1) for CO2 reduction to CO compare with bulk BiOCl (3.3 μmol g−1 h−1).

Abstract:A facile polyol-mediated solvothermal method was developed to fabricate BiOCl hierarchical nanostructures (HNs) with controllable morphologies. The obtained BiOCl hierarchical nanostructures were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and nitrogen adsorption. The BiOCl hierarchical nanostructures (HNs) with ellipsoid-like, sphere-like and flower-like morphologies were constructed of intercrossed nanoflakes or nanosheets. The polyols played significant roles in the fabrication of BiOCl hierarchical nanostructures, which functioned as solvents, reducing and morphology-directing agents. Importantly, the BiOCl hierarchical nanostructures exhibited excellent shape-dependent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activities for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation, which was much higher than that of 2D BiOCl nanosheets, nanoplates, commercial BiOCl and TiO2 (anatase). The highly enhanced photocatalytic activities could be ascribed to the contributions of their hierarchical nanostructures, large BET surface areas, strong adsorption capacities and superhydrophilic properties.

Abstract:Morphology and crystal facets are important factors for affecting photocatalytic performance of BiOCl. However, facile and effective methods for synthesizing BiOCl single-crystals with well-defined morphology are still lacking. In this study, square-like BiOCl single-crystalline with high exposed (001) facets was synthesized via a facile and citric acid modulated hydrothermal route (BOC(CA)). The key feature of this method is that only citric acid is used as a structure-directing agent to adjust the structure without addition of any other organic solvents and structural directing agents. Taking the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dyes as an example, the photocatalytic performance of BOC(CA) was studied and the degradation mechanism was also discussed in detail according to the photocurrent, photoluminescence results and free radical trapping experiments. This study provides not only a facile method for the preparation of highly active catalysts, but also new insights on the structure regulation of catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, Bi/BiOCl nanosheets were prepared by a rapid, cost-efficient and one-step solution combustion synthesis method using a mixed fuel (glycine and tartaric acid). Through thermometry and thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), the combustion mode and reaction mechanism are analyzed. The reducing gas produced by the mixed fuel is a necessary condition for obtaining metal Bi decorated BiOCl, and the content of Bi in the composite can be regulated by adjusting the molar ratio of Bi/Cl in reactants. In addition, under visible light irradiation, due to the SPR effect of metal Bi, Bi/BiOCl composite photocatalyst shows better photocatalytic performance, in which the highest degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 120 min is 2.6 times higher than that of BiOCl. Thus, the present study provides an economic and convenient method for the tunable synthesis of a high-efficiency catalyst for the degradation of pollutants.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Bisphenol A by Co-doped BiOCl Nanosheets under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) is a typical UV-light-sensitive photocatalyst with a unique layered structure, but exhibits no response towards visible light. This is a main limitation for its practical applications in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Among various methods to expand the light absorption region, doping modification is an efficient approach because it can tailor the band structure by forming a doping energy level without changing the layered structure substantially. In this case, the static electric field in the BiOCl crystal can be retained. Since cobalt (Co) exhibits good electrochemical properties, it is an ideal element for doping modification to expand the light absorption region and enhance the charge separation efficiency of BiOCl. In this work, Co-doped BiOCl nanosheets were prepared using a simple hydrothermal route. The doped Co expanded the light absorption region and enhanced the charge separation efficiency by forming a doping energy level in the band gap of BiOCl. As a result, the Co-BiOCl nanosheets exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic performance in degrading bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation with a degradation rate of 3.5 times higher than that of BiOCl. On the basis of the experimental results and density functional theory calculations, the mechanism of visible-light driven catalytic BPA degradation by the Co-BiOCl nanosheets was elucidated. Therefore, the feasibility of Co doping modification for BiOCl was confirmed, and a novel and efficient strategy was provided for the design and synthesis of high-performance photocatalysts.
Enriched surface oxygen vacancies of BiOCl boosting efficient charge separation, whole visible-light absorption, and photo to thermal conversion

Abstract:A simple and controllable solvothermal method was used to synthesis a series of BiOCl nanosheets with various surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) concentration. The introduction of OVs on surface BiOCl nanosheets broaden the photo-absorption to the visible-light-region, induce a remarkable photothermal effect, and enormously promote efficient charge separation. The OVs abundant BiOCl nanosheets exhibit an outstanding selective CO generation rate of 15.33 μmol·g-1·h-1 under the simulated sunlight irradiation, without any sacrificing regent, which is roughly 20.1 times higher than that of pure BiOCl nanosheets. For the degradation of Rhodamine B and tetracycline hydrochloride under visible light, the activity of OVs enriched BiOCl nanosheets is about 43 and 19.5 times higher than that of pure BiOCl nanosheets. The improved photocatalytic activity is attributed to the strong photothermal effect, the tuned electronic structure and the excellent visible light absorption induced by oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanisms, including the separation and transport of carriers, generation process of reactive species and degradation intermediates of tetracycline hydrochloride, are revealed in-depth. Hence, this work may pave the way to illustrate the function of oxygen vacancies in the semiconductor photocatalysis process.

Abstract:Single-crystalline BiOCl nanosheets with coexposed {001} and {110} facets, as well as oxygen vacancies, were synthesized using a simple method. These nanosheets have the ability to activate molecular oxygen, producing reactive superoxide radicals (77.8%) and singlet oxygen (22.2%) when exposed to solar light. The BiOCl demonstrated excellent photocatalytic efficiency in producing H2O2 under simulated solar light and in oxidatively hydroxylating phenylboronic acid under blue LED light. Our research highlights the significance of constructing coexposed {001} and {110} facets, as well as oxygen vacancies, in enhancing photocatalytic performance. The BiOCl nanosheets have the capability to produce H2O2 with a solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 0.11%.

Abstract:The use of bismuth oxyhalides as photocatalysts has received extensive interest because of their high photocatalytic activity and stability. However, available methods for the synthesis of bismuth oxyhalides with tailored morphologies, well-defined facets, and tunable band gaps are still lacking. In this work, two-dimensional BiOClxBr1-x solid solution with exposed {001} facets and tunable band gaps were synthesized by using solvothermal methods. The BiOClxBr1-x solid solution nanoplates crystallized in a homogeneous crystal structure but possessed continuously tuned band gaps from 3.39 to 2.78eV by decreasing the ratio of Cl/Br. Among the synthesized nanoplates, the BiOCl0.5Br0.5 sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for degrading RhodamineB (RhB), a typical organic pollutant, under visible light. The highest photoactivity of the BiOCl0.5Br0.5 sample was attributed to a synergetic effect of higher surface area, facets exposed, and optimized band structure. The results are of profound significance for the design of novel photocatalyst materials.
