Abstract:Single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets with a thickness less than 10 nm and a lateral size larger than 20 μm have successfully synthesized via a surfactant-free hydrothermal route by employing K2Ti6O13 nanofibers prepared in advance as titanium sources. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and selected area electron diffraction, respectively. The results revealed that the single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets are dominated with (010) facets. In general, the slow exfoliation of TiO6 octahedron lamella and the fast combination of the subnitrate radicals with the Bi3+ ions situated in (010) planes induce the crystallization of the single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets. In addition, the as-prepared single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets propose a narrowed gap of ca. 2.41 eV and after modified by Pt-quantum-dots exhibit excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity. It is believed that the surfactant-free in the hydrothermal system induce more amount of surface state responsible for the narrowed gap and the excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity.
Hydrothermal Synthesis and Formation Mechanism of the Single-Crystalline Bi4Ti3O12nanosheets with Dominant (010) Facets

Abstract:Single-crystalline bismuth-layered perovskite Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets with a thickness of about 20 nm and a lateral size over several micrometers have been synthesized by a PVA assisted hydrothermal route. The as-prepared Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The as-prepared Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets have (010) dominated surface facets. Time-dependent experiments reveal that the layered K2Ti6O13 nanofibers formed in the initial stage of the hydrothermal treatment play a key role in the synthesis of Bi4Ti3O12. In the proceeding hydrothermal treatment, the Bi3+ ions substitute for the K+ ions in the layered K2Ti6O13 and peel off the TiO6 octahedron lamellae from the lattice of K2Ti6O13, which then serves as a template for the formation of lamellar Bi4Ti3O12 by reaction with the dehydrated Bi3+ ions. Finally, the lamellar Bi4Ti3O12 species crystallize and grow to single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets under the effect of the preferential adsorption of PVA on the (010) planes. In addition, the band gap and the opto-electronic properties of the single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets were investigated by measuring their UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra, respectively.

Abstract:A molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet-decorated titanium dioxide (TiO2) NRA heterojunction composite was fabricated successfully through a two-step hydrothermal approach. Microstructures and optical properties of specimens were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The gaps of the TiO2 nanorods have been filled with tiny MoS2 nanosheets, which can increase the surface area of MoS2/TiO2 NRA composite thin films. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the thin films were measured and discussed in greater detail. The appropriate hydrothermal reaction temperature of MoS2 is important for the growth of perfect MoS2/TiO2 NRA composites with significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. The photodegradation rate and k value of MoS2-220/TiO2 are 86% and 0.0105 min-1, respectively, which are much larger than those of blank TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the higher visible light absorption and the reduced recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanocrystals with the average size of ca. 12 nm had been successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal method at 180 degrees C for 2 h. The as-synthesized Bi2WO6 nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of the sample was evaluated by photo-degradation of rhodamine-B (RhB) at room temperature, which is much higher than that of the hydrothermal synthesized Bi2WO6 square plates and the commercially available TiO2 (P-25). We believed that the high photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the intrinsically small grain size and high surface-to-volume ratio associated with the Bi2WO6 nanocrystals. Abstract:Bi2WO6 nanoplates were successfully synthesized at 200 degrees C with bismuth citrate (C6H13BiN2O7 center dot H2O) and sodium tungstate dihydrate (Na2WO4 center dot 2H(2)O) as raw materials in hydrothermal environment. The phase composition and morphology were characterized by x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The average sizes of the Bi2WO6 nanoplates were ca. 300 similar to 400 nm in lateral size and ca. 30 nm in thickness, respectively, and the nanoplates were parallel to (010) planes. To completely understand the growth mechanism of the Bi2WO6 nanoplates, a series of time-dependent tests were applied, and a possible mechanism was proposed. Additionally, Rhodamine (RhB) degradation testing was carried out to investigate the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Single-crystalline chromium doped bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3-xCrxO12, x = 0.0-0.5) nanosheets with exposed {110} facets have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The Bi4Ti3-xCrxO12 nanosheets possess well-defined tetragonal shapes with landscape dimension of 100-300 nm and thickness of 10-30 nm. The in-plane surfaces of the nanosheets lies on {001}, and the side surfaces are (110) and ((1) over bar 10). Extension of the light absorption from the ultraviolet region to the visible-light region arises from the Cr 2p levels confirmed by XPS spectra. The Bi4Ti2.6Cr0.4O12 nanosheets with high stability showed the highest photocatalytic performance of H-2 evolution from water under visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, the heterostructures by using the NiOx nanoparticles tightly coupled on the surface of Bi4Ti2.6Cr0.4O12 nanosheets, exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the decrease in the recombination rate of the photoinduced electrons and holes, demonstrating that NiOx/Bi4Ti2.6Cr0.4O12 nanosheet is a promising candidate as a visible light photocatalyst.

Abstract:Bismuth titanate Bi4Ti3O12 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized using tetrabutyl titanate ((C8H9O)(4)Ti), bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)(3)center dot 5H(2)O) as precursors and KOH as mineralizer via hydrothermal reaction at 200 degrees C for 24 h. The phase formation and morphology of the synthesized powders were investigated using XRD, SEM, and TEM. The result shows that the powders were pure Bi4Ti3O12 exhibiting distinguished crystal morphologies of nanosheet and nanobelt. It is found the surface of the Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets parallels the (001) lattice plane. And the formation mechanism of nanosheet and nanobelt Bi4Ti3O12 was discussed.
Controlled Vertical Growing of Bi2O3 Nano Sheets on Diatomite Disks and Its High Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:3D stacking structures of Bi2O3 nano sheets with beta-Bi2O3-like lattice were successfully built up on natural diatomite disks by pre-controlling the surface charge of diatomite before hydrothermal treatment. Diatomite was selected due to its abundant in-situ biomasses, which provided an ideal interface position between porous diatomite and loaded Bi2O3. Three different pre-treating processes, carbothermal reduction, air calcination, and hydrogen peroxide pretreatment, have been compared in order to reveal the role of in-situ biomasses (and their products) of natural diatomite in improving the photocatalytic performance of Bi2O3/diatomite composites. The samples were characterized by DSC, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-vis, surface charge analysis, photoelectrochemical property and photocatalytic activity testing. The results show that Bi2O3/diatomite composites display highly photocatalytic activities and reliable recycling performances for both Rhodamine B and levofloxacin under visible light, due to strong interaction between Bi2O3 and diatomite revealed by XPS, UV-vis and XRD. The lattice structure of superior photocatalyst, beta-Bi2O3-like phase with interlaminar constitution water, is stabilized by diatomite carrier through hydrothermal synthesis. Suitable hydrogen peroxide pretreatment of in-situ biomasses provides ideal carbonaceous substance and surface charge level for diatomite carries, leading to vertical growth of Bi2O3 nano sheets and larger surface area of Bi2O3/diatomite composites. Hydrogen peroxide pretreatment narrows the band gap of Bi2O3 from 2.93 eV to 2.72 eV greatly, on the contrary the carbothermal reduction treatment widens the band gap to 3.32 eV instead. As revealed by capture testing, for Bi2O3/diatomite composites, the center dot OH and holes are the main active species during photocatalytic process. The best sample Bi2O3/50 degrees C-HD, which has 3D stacking structures of Bi2O3 nano sheets, displays narrower band gap and less recombination rate between photon-generated carriers.

Abstract:Visible-light-induced photocatalyst Bi2WO6 with the size of ca. 30 nm has been synthesized via a facile template-free hydrothermal method. The effects of the pH values of the precursor suspensions and hydrothermal time on the photocatalytic activities of the Bi2WO6 nanoplates have been investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared Bi2WO6 was about 8−10 times higher than that of the product prepared by solid-state reaction, which was evaluated by the degradation of RhB dye in water under visible light irradiation. Even under the illumination of a compact fluorescent lamp, the nanosized Bi2WO6 also exhibited high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets were synthesized via a facile sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-assisted hydrothermal process. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy techniques were used to investigate the phase structure, morphology and optical properties of the Bi2O2CO3 products. The SDS surfactant played an important role in the formation of Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets. As-synthesized Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation under irradiation with simulated sunlight. O2− radicals are considered to be the dominant active oxygen species in the photodegradation process.

Abstract:Bi3NbO7 single crystal nanosheets have been fabricated through a solvothermal method. The characterization results show that the phase and morphology could be controlled by adjusting reaction parameters such as urea content and pH value. Under appropriate conditions, Bi3NbO7 nanosheets with square pores can be obtained. These novel porous nanosheets are potential photocatalysts with the narrow band gap which allows to utilizing visible light irradiation for photocatalysis. The results of the photocatalytic tests exhibit the porous ones have higher activity than those nonporous ones. Abstract:Bismuth titanate (Bi12TiO20) nanostructures with different morphologies were synthesized hydrothermally using Bi(NO3)3 and Ti(SO4)2 in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG). X-ray diffraction (XRD) proved that the samples were in pure cubic phase. UV–visible diffuse reflection spectra showed the band gap of Bi12TiO20 is about 2.7eV. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis proved that the Bi12TiO20 samples have higher surface areas than samples prepared by methods reported previously. Photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) under visible light illumination was used to evaluate the photocatalytic ability of samples. The photocatalytic results showed Bi12TiO20 could degrade AO7 very efficiently and had higher photocatalytic activity than traditional N-doped TiO2. In addition, we have also discussed factors that have major effect on reaction efficiency. BET surface area played the most important role in the photocatalytic degradation of AO7. The crystallinity of the samples is another important factor which can also influence photocatalysis results.
Facile synthesis of BiFeO 3 nanosheets with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Single-crystalline BiFeO 3 nanosheets with rectangular shape and exposed {101} facets were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method with low reaction temperature and short time (130 °C for 14 h). The process has advantages of energy saving, template and surfactant free, and no additional equipment in required. The average side lengths of BiFeO 3 nanosheets are around 140 and 230 nm, and thickness is about 30 nm. As a result, the BiFeO 3 nanosheets photocatalyst reaches as high as 89% of photodegradation efficiency of rhodamine B under 180 min visible light irradiation, which is about 4.68 and 2.41 times that of BiFeO 3 powders prepared by solid-state reaction and sol–gel process respectively. The BiFeO 3 nanosheets photocatalyst also exhibits a high reusability and storage stability for the photodegradation reaction. The internal electric fields produced due to the ferroelectric nature are perpendicular to the surfaces of BiFeO 3 nanosheets, which can promote the separation efficiency of photoinduced charges along [101] direction. While the nanoscale thickness structure can shorten the separation distance of photoinduced charges along [101] direction. These two factors all greatly suppress the recombination rate of e − /h + pairs, then leading to the improved photocatalytic kinetics of BiFeO 3 nanosheets.

Abstract:A novel ternary hybrid photocatalyst Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 is fabricated by a facial one-pot hydrothermal method, through the in situ growth of Bi and Bi2O2CO3 on the surface of 2D Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid exhibits the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, evaluated by the photooxidation of methylene blue (MB) and chlorobenzene. The improved photocatalytic activity is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metallic Bi and the formation of the heterojunction among the three components in Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid. The SPR effect of Bi nanoparticles leads to the great light response ability to the entire UV-vis light. And the SPR effect of metallic Bi, combined with Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 heterojunction, also facilitates the rapid separation and transferring of the photogenerated charge carries, as well as the efficient suppression of the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.

Abstract:Surface-dispersive-type Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 heterostructured nanosheets were successfully prepared via anion exchange in a hydrothermal process with the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a precursor of CO32-. The Bi2O2CO3 nanoparticles (with diameters about 5 nm) were highly homogeneously dispersed and inlaid in the single-crystalline Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The composites with intimate interfacial contacts between Bi2O2CO3 and Bi2WO6 exhibited superior visible light photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The composite nanosheets containing 7.86 wt% Bi2O2CO3 showed the best performance and the degradation rate of RhB was 6 times faster than that with the bare Bi2WO6. The dramatic enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of the Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts can be attributed to the hetero-interfaces between Bi2O2CO3 and Bi2WO6, their intrinsically layered structure, two-dimensional morphology and the effective separation of the photoinduced carriers at the interfaces and in the semiconductors. This method can be used to design and prepare other Aurivillius heterostructured semiconductors for efficient light harvesting and energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres could be successfully synthesized in large quantities by a facile hydrothermal strategy in the presence of surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) under mild conditions. The morphology and size of as-prepared Bi2WO6 could be readily controlled by adjusting the synthetic parameters such as hydrothermal time. The probable formation mechanism of nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was discussed in detail. The hierarchical nanosheet-assembled microspheres could be constructed by orderly arranged nanosheets. The photocatalytic activity of the nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under irradiation of visible light. The brilliant photodegradation efficiency is about 98% under visible light irradiation for 50 min. The results suggest that the as-prepared Bi2WO6 microspheres have good prospects as the photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants.
