Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanocrystals with the average size of ca. 12 nm had been successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal method at 180 degrees C for 2 h. The as-synthesized Bi2WO6 nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of the sample was evaluated by photo-degradation of rhodamine-B (RhB) at room temperature, which is much higher than that of the hydrothermal synthesized Bi2WO6 square plates and the commercially available TiO2 (P-25). We believed that the high photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the intrinsically small grain size and high surface-to-volume ratio associated with the Bi2WO6 nanocrystals. Abstract:The synthesis of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) multilayered disk which was constructed by oriented square nanoplates was easily realized via a simple surfactant-free hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to investigate the as-obtained product. The results indicated that the three-dimensional (3D) Bi2WO6 multilayered disk was constructed by self-assembly of square nanoplates via a perfect oriented manner. The formation mechanism of the product was carefully investigated on the basis of the results of time-dependent experiments. In addition, studies of the photocatalytic property demonstrated that the as-obtained Bi2WO6 could exhibit excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB).

Abstract:As a visible light–driven photocatalyst, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted widespread attention and shown great potential in photocatalysis. To further enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 under visible light irradiation, several methods have been employed to optimize the properties of Bi2WO6, including morphology control, doping, and surface modification. Bi2WO6 nanomaterials of diverse morphologies, such as nanoplates, nanoparticles, hierarchical microspheres, and ultrathin or porous nanostructures, have been synthesized to achieve large surface area or exposure of high activity crystal facets. The doping of ions can narrow the bandgap to improve light absorption at long wavelength, whereas surface modification by π-conjugated materials, quantum dots, and other general semiconductors can promote the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the combination of photochemical and electrochemical technologies exhibited great prospect with fast charge migration rate. Finally, as an example of the various applications of Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction by Bi2WO6 is systematically reviewed.

Abstract:Novel Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. XRD, Raman spectra, XPS and SEM were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of the samples, then the structure-dependent optical properties, photoelectric behavior and photocatalytic activities were investigated, and the structure-property relationship was also discussed. The results show that doping Nb5+ can increase the oxygen vacancies in the Bi2WO6 lattice and reduce the optical band gap of Bi2WO6. The oxygen vacancies also act as electron traps, which promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Hence, compared with the pure Bi2WO6, the as-prepared Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for removing contaminants in water such as rhodamine B and tetracycline.

Abstract:Herein, flower-like Bi2WO6/BiOCOOH heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by one-pot method. Morphological characterizations had demonstrated that the Bi2WO6 nanoparticles were tightly anchored on the surface of BiOCOOH, which indicated that the successful synthesis of the Bi2WO6-BiOCOOH photocatalysts. Compared with pure BiOCOOH and Bi2WO6, the Bi2WO6/BiOCOOH photocatalysts had exhibited a red shift in absorption edge and enhanced visible light absorption. EIS, PL and photocurrent response results suggested that the form of the Bi2WO6-BiOCOOH heterojunction facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. Furthermore, the photoactivity of Bi2WO6/BiOCOOH were evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) under the simulated sunlight irradiation. The results manifested that the W/Bi-2 photocatalyst exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, which TC was degraded by 88 % within 75 min and CIP was degraded by 90 % within 90 min. The improvement of photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the decrease in the composite rate of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Radical trapping experiments and EPR results indicated that holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (·O2–) were dominant during the degradation of TC. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed based on the band structures of BiOCOOH and Bi2WO6.

Abstract:The formation of type II heterostructures is proved to be an effective method to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this report, a surface functionalization method using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as the surface functionalizing agent was adopted for the fabrication of Bi2WO6/MS (M = Cd and Zn) heterostructures. The composition and microstructures of the as-prepared heterostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-prepared Bi2WO6/CdS and Bi2WO6/ZnS heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) as compared to pure Bi2WO6, CdS, ZnS nanoparticles and Degussa P25. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared heterostructures may relate to the effective electron-hole separation during the photocatalytic process. A series of scavengers (benzoquinone for O-2(center dot-), ammonium oxalate for h(+), AgNO3 for e(-), and t-BuOH for (OH)-O-center dot) were employed to investigate the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic process. The results clearly indicate that the photogenerated holes are the main active species during the photocatalytic process.

Abstract:The nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres could be successfully synthesized in large quantities by a facile hydrothermal strategy in the presence of surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) under mild conditions. The morphology and size of as-prepared Bi2WO6 could be readily controlled by adjusting the synthetic parameters such as hydrothermal time. The probable formation mechanism of nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was discussed in detail. The hierarchical nanosheet-assembled microspheres could be constructed by orderly arranged nanosheets. The photocatalytic activity of the nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under irradiation of visible light. The brilliant photodegradation efficiency is about 98% under visible light irradiation for 50 min. The results suggest that the as-prepared Bi2WO6 microspheres have good prospects as the photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:WO3-Bi2WO6 heterostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method using WO3 nanorods and Bi(NO3)(3) solution as raw materials. The Bi2WO6 nanosheets uniformly anchored onto the surface of the WO3 nanorods. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was assessed for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol under solar light irradiation. The WO3-Bi2WO6 heterostructures showed higher photocatalytic activities than pure WO3 and Bi2WO6. As the content of Bi2WO6 increased, the photocatalytic activity of the WO3-Bi2WO6 heterojunction was enhanced and the optimal sample was WO3-Bi2WO6 with a nWO(3) : nBi(3+) mole ratio of 5 : 3. The efficient separation of electron-hole pairs because of the staggered band potentials between WO3 and Bi2WO6 may account for the higher photoactivity of WO3-Bi2WO6 hybrid structures. Radical scavenger experiments indicate that holes (h(+)) and superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) were the main active species for RhB degradation during the photocatalytic process.
Formation of Bi2WO6 Bipyramids with Vacancy Pairs for Enhanced Solar‐Driven Photoactivity

Abstract:In order to improve the photoactivity, many attempts have focused on increasing the exposure of highly reactive surfaces on crystals. However, the connection between the reactive surfaces and enhancement is still elusive. Herein, Bi2WO6 nanostructured bipyramids with a large fraction of {100} facets are fabricated by the solvothermal method. The formation of "Bi-O" dimer vacancy pairs on the {100} high-energy facets is responsible for the reduction in band gap and the decrease in the recombination of photo-excited charge carriers, which is unambiguously confirmed by the positron annihilation spectra (PAS), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and theoretical calculations. The effective separation of electron-hole pairs and the narrowing bandgap significantly improve the photoactivity of Bi2WO6 nanobipyramids, especially under solar light irradiation. These findings can be applied broadly to the design and fabrication of energy efficient and robust catalysts.

Abstract:A novel ternary hybrid photocatalyst Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 is fabricated by a facial one-pot hydrothermal method, through the in situ growth of Bi and Bi2O2CO3 on the surface of 2D Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid exhibits the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, evaluated by the photooxidation of methylene blue (MB) and chlorobenzene. The improved photocatalytic activity is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metallic Bi and the formation of the heterojunction among the three components in Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid. The SPR effect of Bi nanoparticles leads to the great light response ability to the entire UV-vis light. And the SPR effect of metallic Bi, combined with Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 heterojunction, also facilitates the rapid separation and transferring of the photogenerated charge carries, as well as the efficient suppression of the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.
Full-spectrum Responsive Photocatalytic Activity Via Non-Noble Metal Bi Decorated Mulberry-Like BiVO4

Abstract:Due to its appropriate bandgap(～2.4 eV)and efficient light absorption,bismuth vanadate(BiVO4)shows promising photocatalysis activity.However,the charge carrier recombination and poorelectron transmis-sion often induce poor photocatalytic performance.Herein,we report a new method to in-situ synthesize non-noble metal Bi decorated mulberry-like BiVO4 by a two-step calcination process.Comprehensive characterizations reveal that non-noble metal Bi nanoparticles grown in-situ on BiVO4 result in the red-shift of the absorbance edge,greatly extending the light absorption from the ultraviolet into the near-infrared region.The surface plasmon resonance excitation of Bi nanoparticles and synergetic effects between Bi and BiVO4 effectively improve the photocatalytic efficiency and promote the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs in mulberry-like BiVO4.Density functional theory(DFT)calculation results further verify that the electrons are transferred from Bi to BiVO4 and the formation of·OH radical in Bi/BiVO4 is attributed to the lower simulated free energy,which supports our experimental outcomes.This work provides a novel strategy to enhance light absorption and promote efficient solar utilization of photocatalysts for practical applications.
Photocatalytic Performance Enhanced Via Surface Bismuth Vacancy of Bi6S2O15 Core/shell Nanowires

Abstract:Core/shell structured Bi6S2O15 nanowires with surface bismuth defects are fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal method. The UV photocatalytic activity of the defective Bi6S2O15 nanowires is about 4 times as high as that of pure Bi6S2O15 nanowires. The light response range of Bi6S2O15 nanowires is greatly expanded from 370nm to 450nm via surface bismuth-vacancy. The main oxidative species transform from holes (h+) to the superoxide radical (O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) owing to the great changes of the electronic structure of vacancy Bi6S2O15. Surface bismuth vacancies elevate the conduction band (CB) and introduce impurity states above the valence band (VB) of Bi6S2O15. The higher potential of CB benefits for the production of superoxide radical (O2−) and the hydroxyl radicals is result from the surface hydroxide radical defects formed with the introduction of surface bismuth-vacancy. The enhancement in photocatalytic performance is attributed to the high separation efficiency of photoinduced electron–hole pairs due to the broadening of the valence band (VB), and the extending of photoresponse is result from the narrowing of energy band gap owing to the rise of the valence band maximum (VBM).

Abstract:Facilitating charge-carrier separation and transfer is fundamentally important to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor materials. Herein, two-dimensional hexagonal WO3 nanoplates were synthesized by a two-step route: rapid evaporation and solid-phase sintering. The as-prepared WO3 exhibits an enhanced activity of photocatalytic water oxidation compared to bulk monoclinic WO3 . The electron dynamics analysis reveals that a more efficient charge-carrier separation in the former can be obtained, the origin of which can be attributed to an increased number of surface defects in hexagonal WO3 nanoplates. This work not only presents a novel and simple method to produce two-dimensional hexagonal WO3 nanoplates, but also demonstrates that surface defects and two-dimensional geometric structures can promote the charge separation, which may be extended to the design of other efficient photocatalysts.

Effects of Mo Replacement on the Structure and Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Performances of Bi2wo6 Photocatalyst

Abstract:Phase-pure Bi2MoxW1-xO6 (0 <= x <= 1) photocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts had an Aurivillius crystal structure and showed special anisotropic growth. The optical absorption spectra of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 were red-shifted monotonically as the value of x increased. On the basis of theoretical calculations, the introduction of Mo atom into Bi2WO6 could reduce the conduction band level of Bi2WO6, so the band gap energy was reduced. The curvature of the conduction band became smaller with an increase in the Mo content due to the different electronegativities of Mo 4d and W 5d. The photocatalytic activities determined by rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were significantly improved as compared with Bi2MoO6. The higher efficiency of Bi2WO6 was attributed to more effective photoelectron transfer in the conduction band with larger curvature. The photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation (lambda > 450 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were much higher than that of Bi2WO6. The mechanism was discussed on the basis of the cystal structure, morphology, and electronic stucture. This work provides a strategy for developing active photocatalysts with more utilization of visible light.
Customized Ultrathin Oxygen Vacancy-Rich Bi2W0.2Mo0.8O6 Nanosheets Enabling a Stepwise Charge Separation Relay and Exposure of Lewis Acid Sites toward Broad-Spectrum Photothermal Catalysis

Abstract:Designing robust photocatalysts with broad light absorption, effective charge separation, and sufficient reactive sites is critical for achieving efficient solar energy conversion. However, realizing these aims simultaneously through a single material modulation approach poses a challenge. Here, a 2D ultrathin oxygen vacancy (Ov)-rich Bi2W0.2Mo0.8O6 solid solution photocatalyst is designed and fabricated to tackle the dilemma through component and structure optimization. Specifically, the construction of a solid solution with ultrathin structure initially facilitates the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, while the introduction of Ov strengthens such separation. In the meantime, the presence of Ov extends light absorption to the NIR region, triggering a photothermal effect that further enhances the charge separation and accelerates the redox reaction. As such, photoinduced charge carriers in the Ov-Bi2W0.2Mo0.8O6 are separated step by step via the synergistic action of 2D solid solution, OV, and solar heating. Furthermore, the introduction of OV exposes surface metal sites that serve as reactive Lewis acid sites, promoting the adsorption and activation of toluene. Consequently, the designed Ov-Bi2W0.2Mo0.8O6 reveals an enhanced photothermal catalytic toluene oxidation rate of 2445 µmol g-1 h-1 under a wide spectrum without extra heat input. The performance is 9.0 and 3.9 times that of Bi2WO6 and Bi2MoO6 nanosheets, respectively.
