Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) was hybridized by Bi2WO6 via a hydrothermal method. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results reveal that an intimate interface between C3N4 and Bi2WO6 forms in the heterojunctions. The UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra show that the resulting C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions possess more intensive absorption within the visible light range in comparison with pure Bi2WO6. These excellent structural and spectral properties endowed the C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. Significantly, the optimum photocatalytic activity of the 0.5C(3)N(4)-0.5Bi(2)WO(6) heterojunction for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) was almost 3 and 155 times higher than those of either individual C3N4 or Bi2WO6. The possible photocatalytic mechanism with superoxide radical species as the main active species in photocatalysis is proposed on the basis of experimental results. Moreover, the heterojunction depicted high stability and durability during six successive cycles.

Abstract:In this work, Bi2WO6 hollow microspheres containing oxygen vacancies (OVs-BWO) was synthesized by a solvothermal template-free method. Raman, EPR and XPS spectra provide sufficient evidence for the existence of OVs in the material. Its activity toward photocatalytic nitrogen fixation was evaluated. Experimental results showed that the OVs-BWO with a BET surface area of 80.5 m2?g- 1 exhibited the ammonia yield of 106.4 ?mol?gcat - 1 under simulated sunlight for 2 h, which is ca. 18 times higher than that of equal-area nest-like Bi2WO6 without oxygen vacancies. The enhanced activity is mainly attributed to the metastable electrons within the subband (i.e., defect energy level) induced by oxygen vacancies to ? anti-bonding orbitals of N2 with a manner of the non-radiative transfer, leading to the activation of nitrogen molecules. The activation and hydrogeneration processes of nitrogen at active site of OVs-BWO were studied by DFT calculation and the possible mechanisms were proposed. The sub-band extends the light absorption region of OVs-BWO to 700 nm. Transient photocurrent response showed that the sub-band electron excitation accelerates the transfer of charges and hinders the electron-hole recombination. It can be perfectly reused five times when air and nitrogen are used as nitrogen sources, thus the OVs-BWO hollow microspheres offer a promising alternative for efficient N2 fixation under ambient conditions.
Synthesis of Bi2WO6 Nanoplate-Built Hierarchical Nest-like Structures with Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate hierarchical nest-like structures built by higher order nanoplate alignment have been successfully synthesized by a facile and economical method in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The formation mechanism and effect of reaction time on the products were investigated. In addition, studies of the photocatalytic property demonstrate that the as-synthesized Bi2WO6 structures show excellent photocatalytic activity exposure to visible light irradiation. Furthermore, we first explored the electrochemical property of the Bi2WO6 nanostructure as an electrode in a lithium ion battery. Therefore, the preparation and properties studies of Bi2WO6 structures suggest potential future applications in photocatalysis by sunlight and as an electrode candidate in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped bismuth niobate (N-Bi(3)NbO(7)) hierarchical architectures were synthesized via a facile two-step hydrothermal process. XRD patterns revealed that the defect fluorite-type crystal structure of Bi(3)NbO(7) remained intact upon nitrogen doping. Electron microscopy showed the N-Bi(3)NbO(7) architecture has a unique peony-like spherical superstructure composed of numerous nanosheets. UV-vis spectra indicated that nitrogen doping in the compound results in a red-shift of the absorption edge from 450nm to 470nm. XPS indicated that [Bi/Nb]N bonds were formed by inducing nitrogen to replace a small amount of oxygen in Bi(3)NbO(7-x)N(x), which is explained by electronic structure calculations including energy band and density of states. Based on observations of architectures formation, a possible growth mechanism was proposed to explain the transformation of polyhedral-like nanoparticles to peony-like microflowers via an Ostwald riping mechanism followed by self-assembly. The N-Bi(3)NbO(7) architectures due to the large specific surface area and nitrogen doping exhibited higher photocatalytic activities in the decomposition of organic pollutant under visible-light irradiation than Bi(3)NbO(7) nanoparticles. Furthermore, an enhanced photocatalytic performance was also observed for Ag/N-Bi(3)NbO(7) architectures, which can be attributed to the synergetic effects between noble metal and semiconductor component.

Abstract:As a visible light–driven photocatalyst, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted widespread attention and shown great potential in photocatalysis. To further enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 under visible light irradiation, several methods have been employed to optimize the properties of Bi2WO6, including morphology control, doping, and surface modification. Bi2WO6 nanomaterials of diverse morphologies, such as nanoplates, nanoparticles, hierarchical microspheres, and ultrathin or porous nanostructures, have been synthesized to achieve large surface area or exposure of high activity crystal facets. The doping of ions can narrow the bandgap to improve light absorption at long wavelength, whereas surface modification by π-conjugated materials, quantum dots, and other general semiconductors can promote the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the combination of photochemical and electrochemical technologies exhibited great prospect with fast charge migration rate. Finally, as an example of the various applications of Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction by Bi2WO6 is systematically reviewed.

Abstract:The photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process is a crucial step toward carbon neutrality and sustainable development. The combination of polyoxometalates and metal-organic frameworks is a viable method to achieve high-efficiency photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. In this work, we employed bimetallic ZIF (BMZIF) composed of Co2+ and Zn2+ encapsulated with H3PW12O40 (PW12) as the precursor to synthesize Zn-doped Co3O4 nanopolyhedra loaded with WO3 nanoparticles. The NH3 yield of WO3/Zn-Co3O4-2 with the best photocatalytic performance can reach 231.9 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light, about 2.4 and 6.4 times those of pure Zn-Co3O4 and WO3, respectively. The rhombic dodecahedral geometry of BMZIF is still maintained in the synthesized WO3/Zn-Co3O4 nanopolyhedra, with the significant increase in the specific surface area after calcination showing better catalytic performance. At the same time, Zn doping and the formation of WO3 nanoparticles result in abundant oxygen vacancies in WO3/Zn-Co3O4 heterostructures. Oxygen vacancies can supply nitrogen with active sites for adsorption and activation and improve photocarriers' capacity for separation, which can greatly increase the effectiveness of the photocatalytic synthesis of ammonia. This work can easily synthesize the heterostructure based on n-type WO3 nanoparticles and p-type Zn-doped Co3O4 nanopolyhedra, and the beneficial combination of POMs and metal-organic framework provides new thinking for the synthesis of efficient nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts.

Abstract:Structural design and morphological control of semiconductors is considered to be one of the most effective ways to improve their photocatalytic degradation properties. In the present work, a hexagonal WO3·0.33H2O hierarchical microstructure (HWHMS) composed of nanorods was successfully prepared by the hydrothermal method. The morphology of the HWHMS was confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the synthesized product was orthorhombic WO3·0.33H2O. Owing to the unique hierarchical microstructure, the HWHMS showed larger Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface and narrower bandgap (1.53 eV) than the isolated WO3·0.33H2O nanorods. Furthermore, the HWHMS showed enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation compared with the isolated nanorods, which can be ascribed to the narrower bandgap, larger BET specific surface area, and orthorhombic phase structure of the HWHMS. This work provides a potential protocol for construction of tungsten trioxide counterparts and materials similar to tungsten trioxide for application in gas sensors, photocatalysts, electrochromic devices, field-emission devices, and solar-energy devices.

Abstract:Bi2WO6 with multilayered disc-like and 3D hierarchical nest-like architectures self-assembled from 2D nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method in EDTA-mediated processes. It was found that the morphology modulation of the as-obtained products could be easily realized simply by changing the amount of EDTA introduced into the reaction system. The stepwise self-assembly formation mechanisms for two different hierarchical architectures were proposed on the basis of a series of time-dependent experiments. The photocatalytic activities of the different Bi2WO6 samples for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) were also evaluated. Due to the unique morphology, porous structure and large surface area, Bi2WO6 nest-like architectures exhibited better activity performance than Bi2WO6 multilayered microdiscs. The present work not only presents an efficient way for the selectively controllable preparation of Bi2WO6 hierarchical structures viaself-assembly from 2D nanosheets, but also provides a step forward in the design of photocatalysts with controllable morphology and enhanced photocatalytic activities.

In this study, BiO 2-x nanosheets were synthesized through a hydrothermal process and loaded onto NaNbO 3 microcube to construct a series of BiO 2-x /NaNbO 3 heterojunctions for photocatalytic N 2 fixation. Results indicated that 2.5% BiO 2-x /NaNbO 3 had the highest photocatalytic performance. Abstract:Novel Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. XRD, Raman spectra, XPS and SEM were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of the samples, then the structure-dependent optical properties, photoelectric behavior and photocatalytic activities were investigated, and the structure-property relationship was also discussed. The results show that doping Nb5+ can increase the oxygen vacancies in the Bi2WO6 lattice and reduce the optical band gap of Bi2WO6. The oxygen vacancies also act as electron traps, which promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Hence, compared with the pure Bi2WO6, the as-prepared Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for removing contaminants in water such as rhodamine B and tetracycline.

Abstract:The synthesis and self-assembly of hierarchical architectures from nanoscale building blocks with unique morphology, orientation and dimension have opened up new opportunities to enhance their functional performances and remain a great challenge. This work represents tunable synthesis of various types of 3D monodisperse in situ N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical architectures composed of 2D single-crystal nanosheets with dominant (001) facets by a one-pot template-free hydrothermal method from bismuth citrate and ammonia solution. Depending on the concentration of ammonia solution, the morphology of N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3, including dandelion-like, hydrangea-like and peony flower-like microspheres, can be selectively constructed due to different self-assembly patterns of nanosheets. It was revealed that the ammonia played dual roles in the formation of N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 architectures. One is to hydrolyze bismuth citrate, and the other is to behave as a nitrogen doping source. The in situ doped nitrogen substituted for oxygen in (BiO)(2)CO3 and subsequently narrowed the band gap, making N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 visible light active. Due to the special nanosheets architectures, the prepared various N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 materials exhibited especially efficient photocatalytic activity and high durability for the removal of NO in air under both visible and UV light irradiation. Based on the direct observation of the growth process with respect to phase structure, chemical composition and morphological structure, a novel growth mechanism is revealed, which involves a unique multistep pathway, including reaction-nucleation, aggregation, crystallization, dissolution-recrystallization, and Ostwald ripening. The facile synthesis approach and the proposed growth mechanism could provide new insights into the design and controlled synthesis of inorganic hierarchical materials with new or enhanced properties.
Covalently Bonded Bi2O3 Nanosheet/Bi2WO6 Network Heterostructures for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:The highly efficient spatial carrier separation and abundant active sites are significant for CO2 photocatalytic reduction efficiency. Herein, an ultrathin Bi2O3 nanosheet/Bi2WO6 network heterostructure is successfully synthesized via a covalently bonded epitaxial growth strategy. Due to cosharing of the Bi-O tetrahedron between Bi2O3 and Bi2WO6, this heterostructure exhibits a compact interface, which can provide a highway for the charge transfer and then boost their separation. Moreover, the pores generated from the hierarchical structure afford abundant exposed photocatalytic active sites. Thus, the optimal Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 heterostructure (BOBWO-12) shows superior photocatalytic performance for CO2 reduction with an ultrahigh selectivity as well as the removal of RhB. Notably, the photocatalytic CO generation rate over BOBWO-12 reaches up to 17.39 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1), which is 18.0 and 4.2 times higher than that of bulk-Bi2WO6 and Bi2WO6 nanosheets, respectively, and the selectivity is of about 95.4%. Moreover, the Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 heterostructure also exhibits improved long-term stability, resulting from the firm heterointerface. Our studies present a conventient avenue to construct a high-efficiency heterostructure photocatalyst with a firm interface by the covalently bonded epitaxial growth method for CO2 reduction.

The WO3-x nanosheets (rich oxygen vacancies) display nice photocatalytic activity for N2 reduction to ammonia with a high yield rate of 82.41 μmol·gcat-1·h-1 under irradiation of visible light (420 nm), which is 3.59 times higher than that of the WO3-x nanoparticles (poor oxygen vacancies). Electron spin resonance (ESR), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and transient photocurrent responses in the N2 or Ar atmosphere experiments proved that the rich oxygen vacancies, which are induced by the nanosheet structure, could serve as active sites for the chemisorption of N2 and facilitate the electron transfer from unsaturated sites to activated N2. Moreover, based on the analysis of banding energy, the oxygen vacancies not only boosted the ability of visible light harvesting but also elevated the defect energy level to the Fermi level, further inhibiting the defect relaxation effect. The findings offer an insight into the design of the efficient photocatalysts via structure engineering and defect engineering for photocatalytic N2 fixation.
