Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis provides potential solutions for many energy and environmental-related issues. Recently, various semiconductors with hierarchical nanostructures have been fabricated to achieve efficient photocatalysts owing to their multiple advantages, such as high surface area, porous structures, as well as enhanced light harvesting. ZnO has been widely investigated and considered as the most promising alternative photocatalyst to TiO2. Herein, we present a review on the fabrication methods, growth mechanisms and photocatalytic applications of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures. Various synthetic strategies and growth mechanisms, including multistep sequential growth routes, template-based synthesis, template-free self-organization and precursor or self-templating strategies, are highlighted. In addition, the fabrication of multicomponent ZnO-based nanocomposites with hierarchical structures is also included. Finally, the application of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures and nanocomposites in typical photocatalytic reactions, such as pollutant degradation and H-2 evolution, is reviewed.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalides are characterized by their open two-dimensional layered crystalline structures which endow bismuth oxyhalides with high specific surface areas, large amount of surface exposed atoms and some other unique physical and chemical properties. Owing to these abundant features, bismuth oxyhalides have great potential in serving as excellent photocatalysts and electrocatalysts and have received enormous research interest in addressing serious global environmental pollution and energy shortage crisis recent years. In this review, we first discuss the superior structural characteristics of bismuth oxyhalides, comprehensively summarize the efficient strategies including metal/non-metal incorporation, modulating strain, constructing vacancies, constructing heterostructures and constructing moiré superlattice to improve the photocatalytic activities, and then introduce current progress on bismuth-oxyhalides-templated electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. At the end of this article, we propose some perspectives for the future development of bismuth oxyhalides as photocatalysts and templates of electrocatalysts, aiming at constructing superior photoelectrochemical devices and promoting this bifunctional material into industrial application.

Bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) has been shown to be an excellent visible light response, a well-defined perovskite crystal structure, and an abundance of oxygen atoms (providing efficient channels for photogenerated carrier transfer) due to their suitable band gap, effective electron migration and separation, making them ideal photocatalysts. It has been extensively applied as photocatalyst in aspects including pollutant removal, carbon dioxide reduction, solar hydrogen production, ammonia synthesis by nitrogen photocatalytic reduction, and cancer therapy. In this review, the fabrication and application of Bi 2 WO 6 in photocatalysis were comprehensively discussed. The photocatalytic properties of Bi 2 WO 6 -based materials were significantly enhanced by carbon modification, the construction of heterojunctions, and the atom doping to improve the photogenerated carrier migration rate, the number of surface active sites, and the photoexcitation ability of the composites. In addition, the potential development directions and the existing challenges to improve the photocatalytic performance of Bi 2 WO 6 -based materials were discussed.

Abstract:Bi2MoO6, an eye‐catching member of the Aurivillius family, has recently drawn extensive interest in visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic environmental remediation and energy conversion by right of its salient features such as fascinating layered structure, appropriate band potentials, nontoxicity, and excellent thermal and chemical inertness. Enormous endeavors have been devoted to breaking out of its inherent flaws to further improve its unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity. Herein, a general overview is given to summarize the recent advances in the surface/interface modification strategies for fabricating highly active Bi2MoO6‐based nanostructures. The means and mechanisms of surface and interface modifications are concluded and discussed in some detail, including morphology regulation, facet control, defect engineering, metal deposition, and semiconductor combination. Moreover, representative photocatalytic applications of Bi2MoO6‐based nanostructures are also dialectically introduced and categorized into two main types: environmental contaminant removal and renewable energy development. Herein, the current research status of Bi2MoO6‐based photocatalysts is highlighted, informing a broad range of researchers abreast of these significant fields, as well as casting a glance at the challenges and potential of this material.

Abstract:In recent years, photocatalysis technology obtain a lot of attention to solve the energy shortage and environmental pollution. As a photocatalytic nanomaterial, BiOCl and BiOCl-based photocatalysts have sparked numerous interest due to its unique hierarchical structure and electronic structure. In this review, we provide an overview of BiOCl-based photocatalysts development/design encompassing experimental studies. Specific foci include photocatalyst: (i) synthetic method (ii) growth mechanism, (iii) crystal structure and electronic structure, (iv) bandgap energies. The relationship between structure–property-performance is further elaborated. The synthesis methods, structure, basic properties of various BiOCl-based photocatalytic nanomaterials were investigate, summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the application of BiOCl-based photocatalysts in the production of clean fuels and the degradation of pollutants have proved its efficient. Finally, this review proposed some viewpoints about the development and new guidance of BiOCl-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Bi‐based semiconducting materials have received tremendous attention due to their availability, non/low toxicity, ecological friendship, rich chemical forms and good visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic performance. As compared to the commonly‐investigated trivalent bismuth(Bi(III))‐based photocatalysts, non trivalent bismuth‐based materials (NTBBMs), such as BiO2‐x , Bi2O4‐x , Bi4O7, NaBiO3, and so on, exhibit excellent visible‐light and even full‐spectrum driven photocatalytic activity as they hold narrow band gap, suitable positions of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB), and relatively redox‐sensitive structures. This review attempts to summarize the recent progress in the preparation, microstructures and modification strategies of various NTBBMs‐based photocatalysts. Abstract:Due to the process of economic and industrial development since the 20th century, humans worldwide are facing severe environmental pollution problems. The key to the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is to develop advanced semiconductor materials and optimize the photocatalytic reaction process. Bismuth molybdate (Bi2MoO6) has become an excellent semiconductor material for the degradation of contaminants due to its suitable band gap, high stability and nontoxicity. The structure and degradation process of Bi2MoO6 are briefly introduced in this review. Then the effects of modification treatment, reaction conditions, synergy with other systems and the addition of carriers on the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants by Bi2MoO6 are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges faced by Bi2MoO6-based photocatalysts in photocatalysis technology are discussed, and future development prospects have prospected. It is hoped that this review can provide insights and inspiration for the development of Bi2MoO6 in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:As a sustainable environmental governance strategy and energy conversion method, photocatalysis has considered to have great potential in this field due to its excellent optical properties and has become one of the most attractive technologies today. Among 2D materials, the emerging two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental materials mainly distributed in the -IIIA, -IVA, -VA and -VIA groups and show excellent performance in solar energy conversion due to their graphene-like 2D atomic structure and unique properties, thereby drawing increasing attention. This review briefly summarizes the preparation processes and fundamental properties of 2D single-element nanomaterials, as well as various modification strategies and adjustment mechanisms to enhance their photocatalytic properties. In particular, this article comprehensively discusses the related practical applications of 2D single-element materials in the field of photocatalysis, including photocatalytic degradation for contaminants removal, photocatalytic pathogen inactivation, photocatalytic fouling control and photocatalytic energy conversion. This review will provide some new opportunities for the rational design of other excellent photocatalysts based on 2D monoelemental materials, as well as present tremendous novel ideas for 2D monoelemental materials in other environmental conservation and energy-related applications, such as supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, solar cells, and so on.

Continuously Enhanced Photoactivity of Hierarchical Β-Bi2o3/bi2s3 Heterostructure Derived from Novel BiO2CH3 Octagonal Nanoplates

Abstract:BiO2CH3 nanoplate, a new organometallic crystal, with octagonal morphology is successfully prepared using methanol solvothermal method and further employed as template to fabricate porous beta-Bi2O3 octagonal nanoplates with a thickness of less than 50 nm. Then a series of hierarchical octagonal haystack like beta-Bi2O3/Bi2S3 hybrids with large heterointerface and small bandgaps (1.36-1.44 eV) are constructed. It is found that, different from many regular photocatalysts that suffer from shrink of photocatalytic efficiency, the photoactivities of all beta-Bi2O3/Bi2S3 heterostructures are continuously enhanced with growing test cycles, owing to the formation of Bi2O3-xSx solid solution, in which the built-in electric filed induced by lattice distortion can brings about higher e(-)/h(+) separation efficiency. The gradually increasing photocatalytic activity can reach to an up limit in about 5 photocatalytic cycles and maintain at this level, beta-Bi2O3/Bi2S3 heterostructure loaded with 20 mol% of Bi2S3 is demonstrated to be the best photocatalyst and capable of fully decomposing Rh B in 30 min. Our work provides deep insights into the nature of the inversed photocatalytic behavior and facilitates the advanced design of photocatalysts with unabated photoactivities. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has become a research hotspot due to its potential in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental purification. Nevertheless, the limited light absorption and fast recombination of photogenerated carriers hinder the further improvement of the photocatalyt-ic performance of Bi2WO6. Herein, we provide a systematic review for the recent advances on Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts. It starts with the crystal structure, optical properties and photocata-lytic fundamentals of Bi2WO6. Then, we focus on the modification strategies of Bi2WO6 based on morphology control, atomic modulation and composite fabrication for diverse photocatalytic appli-cations, such as organic synthesis, water splitting, CO2 reduction, water treatment, air purification, bacterial inactivation, etc. Finally, some current challenges and future development prospects are proposed. We expect that this review can provide a useful reference and guidance for the develop-ment of efficient Bi2WO6 photocatalysts.

Abstract:Bismuth-related nanomaterials have received much attention as potential promising photocatalysts for both solar energy conversion and environment remediation because of their efficient photocatalytic activity, high stability, low cost and nontoxicity. And their photocatalytic performances are closely related with the phase, morphology, structure, size, band gap, surface area, crystallinity, rate of the charge transfer, efficiency of charge separation and so on. This article reviews the state-of-the-art research process in nanostructured bismuth-containing photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants, photocatalytic water splitting, photo reduction and oxidation of air pollutants and heavy metal ions removal. We begin with a survey of the photocatalytic application of various single-component bismuth-related nanomaterials for environment remediation. To improve the photocatalytic efficiency of bismuth-related nanomaterials, many of the most recent advances in photocatalysis have been realized by selective control of the morphology and structure of nanomaterials or by constructing composited materials with other semiconductors or by doping with different elements, which could facilitate the transfer and the separation efficiency of the photo-generated electrons and holes and/or reconstruct the band gap of the photocatalysts. Therefore, we also discuss the current scientific and technological strategies for enhancing photocatalytic activity of bismuth-related nanomaterials.

Abstract:As a visible light–driven photocatalyst, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted widespread attention and shown great potential in photocatalysis. To further enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 under visible light irradiation, several methods have been employed to optimize the properties of Bi2WO6, including morphology control, doping, and surface modification. Bi2WO6 nanomaterials of diverse morphologies, such as nanoplates, nanoparticles, hierarchical microspheres, and ultrathin or porous nanostructures, have been synthesized to achieve large surface area or exposure of high activity crystal facets. The doping of ions can narrow the bandgap to improve light absorption at long wavelength, whereas surface modification by π-conjugated materials, quantum dots, and other general semiconductors can promote the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the combination of photochemical and electrochemical technologies exhibited great prospect with fast charge migration rate. Finally, as an example of the various applications of Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction by Bi2WO6 is systematically reviewed.

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of photocatalytic technology and the highly growing issues of energy scarcity and environmental pollution, there is an increasing interest in extremely efficient photocatalytic systems. The widespread immense attention and applicability of Nb2O5 photocatalysts can be attributed to their multiple benefits, including strong redox potentials, non-toxicity, earth abundance, corrosion resistance, and efficient thermal and chemical stability. However, the large-scale application of Nb2O5 is currently impeded by the barriers of rapid recombination loss of photo-activated electron/hole pairs and the inadequacy of visible light absorption. To overcome these constraints, plentiful design strategies have been directed at modulating the morphology, electronic band structure, and optical properties of Nb2O5. The current review offers an extensive analysis of Nb2O5-based photocatalysts, with a particular emphasis on crystallography, synthetic methods, design strategies, and photocatalytic mechanisms. Finally, an outline of future research directions and challenges in developing Nb2O5-based materials with excellent photocatalytic performance is presented.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a most important approach to addressing global energy shortages and environmental issues due to its environmentally friendly and sustainable properties. The key to realizing efficient photocatalysis relies on developing appropriate catalysts with high efficiency and chemical stability. Among various photocatalysts, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hollow-structured materials have drawn increased attention in photocatalysis based on advantages like more active sites, strong light absorption, efficient transfer of pho-induced charges, excellent stability, high electrical conductivity, and better biocompatibility. Specifically, MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials are widely utilized in photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR), hydrogen evolution (HER), nitrogen fixation (NRR), degradation, and other reactions. This review starts with the development story of MOFs, the commonly adopted synthesis strategies of MOFs-derived hollow materials, and the latest research progress in various photocatalytic applications are also introduced in detail. Ultimately, the challenges of MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials in practical photocatalytic applications are also prospected. This review holds great potential for developing more applicable and efficient MOFs-derived hollow-structured photocatalysts.

Abstract:Ultrathin 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which is the flagship of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide nanomaterials, has drawn much attention in the last few years. 2D MoS2 has been banked as an alternative to platinum for highly active hydrogen evolution reaction because of its low cost, high surface-to-volume ratio, and abundant active sites. However, when MoS2 is used directly as a photocatalyst, contrary to public expectation, it still performs poorly due to lateral size, high recombination ratio of excitons, and low optical cross section. Besides, simply compositing MoS2 as a cocatalyst with other semiconductors cannot satisfy the practical application, which stimulates the pursual of a comprehensive insight into recent advances in synthesis, properties, and enhanced hydrogen production of MoS2. Therefore, in this Review, emphasis is given to synthetic methods, phase transitions, tunable optical properties, and interfacial engineering of 2D MoS2. Abundant ways of band edge tuning, structural modification, and phase transition are addressed, which can generate the neoteric photocatalytic systems. Finally, the main challenges and opportunities with respect to MoS2 being a cocatalyst and coherent light-matter interaction of MoS2 in photocatalytic systems are proposed.

Abstract:Recently, the bismuth-based (Bi-based) Z-scheme photocatalysts have been paid great attention due to their good solar energy utilization capacity, the high separation rate of their photogenerated hole-electron pairs, and strong redox ability. They are considerably more promising materials than single semiconductors for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental deterioration by efficiently utilizing sunlight to motivate various photocatalytic reactions for energy production and pollutant removal. In this review, the traits and recent research progress of Bi-based semiconductors and recent achievements in the synthesis methods of Bi-based direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are explored. The recent photocatalytic applications development of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts in environmental pollutants removal and detection, water splitting, CO2 reduction, and air (NOx) purification are also described concisely. The challenges and future perspective in the studies of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are discussed and summarized in the conclusion of this mini review.
