Abstract:Single-crystalline TiO2 nanosheet array films with tunable percentage of exposed {001} facets were synthesized on FTO by a simple hydrothermal method. The effects of the hydrochloric acid concentration on morphology, crystal structure, and optical property have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscope system, and UV–Vis spectrophotometer. When the hydrochloric acid concentration increases from 4.8 to 5.2 mol/L, dense regular nanosheets tend to grow perpendicular to the substrate surface, and the percentage of exposed {001} facets is increasing from 76 to 84 %. Evolution of these nanosheet array films has accompanied by significant variations of photoelectronic and photocatalytic properties. The intensity of Raman peak E g at 144 cm−1 decreases, and the photocurrent increases when more proportion areas of {001} facets are exposed. The sample prepared at hydrochloric acid concentration of 4.8 mol/L shows the highest photocatalytic activity. This can be explained by the preferential carrier transport to different facets of the TiO2 crystal with tradeoff relation between the {101} and {001} facets, and a increasing of total catalytic sites.

Abstract:BiOCl is known as a highly efficient photocatalyst for degradation of pollutants. However, effective methods for fabricating BiOCl nanomaterials with well-defined facets are still lacking. In this work, a facile synthetic method was developed for the fabrication of BiOCl nanodisks with exposed {001} facets. The central feature of this approach was the use of water as the hydrolysis agent and ethylene glycol as the crystal growth inhibitor agent to tune the growth of BiOCl nanomaterial. With this approach, the size and shape of BiOCl nanostructures could be effectively tuned through adjusting the volume ratio of ethylene glycol/H2O. In addition, the mechanism of the crystal growth in this fabrication process was elucidated. The as-prepared BiOCl nanodisks with exposed {001} facets exhibited an excellent photocatalytic activity towards Rhodamine B degradation under both ultraviolet and visible light irradiations. These findings shed light on the deep understanding of formation mechanisms of BiOCl nanodisks and provide an efficient and facile method for the synthesis of high active photocatalyst.

Abstract:TiO2 microcrystals exposing {001} facets are of potential applications in photocatalysis; however, the photocatalytic activity is limited by micrometer sizes. Herein, we report a compositing tactic to compensate the photocatalytic activity through surface decorations with few-layer TiO2 nanobelts. Hydrothermally synthesized anatase TiO2 microcrystals exposing (001) facets were immersed in a precursor solution at 60 degrees C, on which hydrogen titanate nanobelts precipitated vertically on the surface. A subsequent calcination in air at 400 degrees C was followed to decompose titanate nanobelts to anatase TiO2 with the nanostructure maintained. The coverage of TiO2 nanobelts can be controlled by varying the immersing duration. When utilized to assist photodegradation of phenol in water under UV light illumination, the composited TiO2 exhibited a reaction rate constant 2.3 times that of the pristine TiO2 microcrystals. A synergetic effect arising from the microcrystals and surface decorated nanobelts is believed to contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Morphology and crystal facets are important factors for affecting photocatalytic performance of BiOCl. However, facile and effective methods for synthesizing BiOCl single-crystals with well-defined morphology are still lacking. In this study, square-like BiOCl single-crystalline with high exposed (001) facets was synthesized via a facile and citric acid modulated hydrothermal route (BOC(CA)). The key feature of this method is that only citric acid is used as a structure-directing agent to adjust the structure without addition of any other organic solvents and structural directing agents. Taking the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dyes as an example, the photocatalytic performance of BOC(CA) was studied and the degradation mechanism was also discussed in detail according to the photocurrent, photoluminescence results and free radical trapping experiments. This study provides not only a facile method for the preparation of highly active catalysts, but also new insights on the structure regulation of catalysts.

Abstract:Facet engineering of anatase TiO2 by controlling the {001} exposure ratio has been the focus of numerous investigations to optimize photocatalytic activity. In particular, an introduction of fluoride ions during the crystal growth has been demonstrated to be very effective and decisive in realizing the facet exposure of the crystals. However, a key role of fluoride ions in stabilizing {001} exposure and improving subsequent photocatalytic activity of anatase TiO2 remains unclear up to date. Herein, a controlled thickness of anatase TiO2 nanosheets has been realized by introducing different amounts of ethanol into a HF acid-assisted hydrothermal reaction. The thinnest nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 2.9 nm were evaluated to have the highest H-2 production rate of 41.04 mmol.h(-1).g(-1) under ultraviolet light irradiation, and the corresponding quantum efficiency was determined to be 41.6% (lambda = 365 nm). Moreover, it is proved for the first time that fluoride ions are bonded with Ti vacancies on {001} facets, and such defects are crucial for stabilizing the ultrathin nanosheets and improving their electron-hole separation, therefore leading to a highly efficient photocatalytic activity. The findings offer an opportunity to engineer facets and functionality of anatase TiO2 by controlling surface defects.

Abstract:Single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets with a thickness less than 10 nm and a lateral size larger than 20 μm have successfully synthesized via a surfactant-free hydrothermal route by employing K2Ti6O13 nanofibers prepared in advance as titanium sources. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and selected area electron diffraction, respectively. The results revealed that the single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets are dominated with (010) facets. In general, the slow exfoliation of TiO6 octahedron lamella and the fast combination of the subnitrate radicals with the Bi3+ ions situated in (010) planes induce the crystallization of the single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets. In addition, the as-prepared single-crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets propose a narrowed gap of ca. 2.41 eV and after modified by Pt-quantum-dots exhibit excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity. It is believed that the surfactant-free in the hydrothermal system induce more amount of surface state responsible for the narrowed gap and the excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Single-crystalline tetragonal perovskite lead titanate (PbTiO3) nanosheets with dominant (001) facets have been successfully synthesized by employing layered K2Ti6O13 nanofibers as titanium sources. The as-prepared PbTiO3 nanosheets were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and selected-area electron diffraction. In order to understand the formation mechanism of the PbTiO3 nanosheets, a series of time-dependent experiments were performed. Because of the substitution of Pb(2+) ions for K(+) ions, the TiO6 octahedral lamellas exfoliate from the layered K2Ti6O13 crystal structure. Then the exfoliated TiO6 octahedral lamellas as templates transform to lamellar PbTiO3 species by reacting with the dehydrated Pb(2+) ions. With hydrothermal treatment prolongation, the lamellar PbTiO3 species crystallize to single-crystalline PbTiO3 nanosheets. Moreover, the thickness of the synthesized single-crystalline PbTiO3 nanosheets can be tailored in the range of 10-50 nm by controlling the hydrothermal treatment time. In addition, the band gap and the optoelectronic properties of the single-crystalline PbTiO3 nanosheets are investigated by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence.
Controlled synthesis of one-dimensional BiOBr with exposed (110) facets and enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Novel one-dimensional rod-like BiOBr with exposed (110) facets (BiOBr-110) was synthesized by the self-sacrifice template method using glucose as the capping agent and structure-directing agent. The glucose can interact with the (001) facet of the BiOBr nanoparticles and suppress the growth of these planes, which results in the formation of ultrathin BiOBr nanosheets with exposed (001) facets. At the same time, glucose induces these ultrathin nanosheets to assemble along the [001] orientation of the BiOBr nanosheets, resulting in the formation of BiOBr nanorods with exposed (110) facets. BiOBr-110 displays better photocatalytic capability than BOBr-001 for dye degradation, which is attributed to the higher conductive band potential and narrower band gap in BiOBr-110. Additionally, BiOBr-110 has a higher charge transfer efficiency and lower charge transfer resistance than BiOBr-001. This work should offer a simple method to control the synthesis of BiOBr with exposed (110) facets.

Abstract:The use of bismuth oxyhalides as photocatalysts has received extensive interest because of their high photocatalytic activity and stability. However, available methods for the synthesis of bismuth oxyhalides with tailored morphologies, well-defined facets, and tunable band gaps are still lacking. In this work, two-dimensional BiOClxBr1-x solid solution with exposed {001} facets and tunable band gaps were synthesized by using solvothermal methods. The BiOClxBr1-x solid solution nanoplates crystallized in a homogeneous crystal structure but possessed continuously tuned band gaps from 3.39 to 2.78eV by decreasing the ratio of Cl/Br. Among the synthesized nanoplates, the BiOCl0.5Br0.5 sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for degrading RhodamineB (RhB), a typical organic pollutant, under visible light. The highest photoactivity of the BiOCl0.5Br0.5 sample was attributed to a synergetic effect of higher surface area, facets exposed, and optimized band structure. The results are of profound significance for the design of novel photocatalyst materials.
InOCl Nanosheets with Exposed {001} Facets: Synthesis, Electronic Structure and Surprisingly High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:A single-crystalline InOCl nanosheet was synthesized by heating aqueous InCl3 solution on a Si wafer to 400 °C. The as-synthesized InOCl nanosheets are single crystalline, grow along the directions perpendicular to (0 1 0), (2 0 0) facets of the orthorhombic InOCl and are enclosed by {0 0 1} top and down surfaces. Their typical widths, lengths and thicknesses are in the range of 1.4 to 2.5 μm, 8.4 to 16.7 μm, and 42 to 71 nm, respectively. The InOCl nanosheets with exposed {0 0 1} facets show higher photocatalytic activity than Degussa P25 TiO2 for degradation of organic dyes. The calculated band structure of InOCl confirms that it has an indirect band-gap. The highest occupied orbital is hybridization of Cl 3p and O 2p states, and the In 5s state dominates the lowest unoccupied orbital. The crystal structure of InOCl is shown, and its excellent photocatalytic activity was attributed to their open crystal structure and indirect optical transitions.

Abstract:Hexagonal Pd nanosheets with extremely thin thickness are synthesized in high yields by reducing the Pd salt precursor in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) containing tungsten hexacarbonyl (W(CO)(6)), citric acid (CA), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). During the reaction, W(CO)(6) spontaneously decomposes to W particles and CO, serving as reducing and capping agents in the synthesis of Pd nanosheets, respectively. We found that the use of CA and CTAB is both beneficial to promote the formation of hexagonal Pd nanosheets with stacking faults. In addition, the edge length of the Pd nanosheets can be simply tuned by varying the amount of CA fed in the synthesis. Such nanosheets can be further grown by subsequent seeded growth with as-preformed Pd nanosheets as the seeds. The Pd nanosheets with different edge lengths exhibit tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the range of 820-1067 nm, and thus hold great potential in the field of plasmon-enhanced catalysis.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile synthesis of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with exposed, chemically active {001} facets. The nanocrystals were prepared by digesting electrospun nanofibers consisting of amorphous TiO2 and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) with an aqueous acetic acid solution (pH = 1.6), followed by hydrothermal treatment at 150 degrees C for 20 h. The as-obtained nanocrystals exhibited a truncated tetragonal bipyramidal shape with 9.6% of the surface being enclosed by {001} facets. The use of electrospinning is critical to the success of this synthesis as it allows for the generation of very small particles of amorphous TiO2 to facilitate hydrothermal crystallization, an Ostwald ripening process. The morphology of the nanocrystals had a strong dependence on the pH value of the solution used for hydrothermal treatment. Low pH values tended to eliminate the {001} facets by forming sharp corners while high pH values favored the formation of a rodlike morphology through an oriented attachment mechanism. When acetic acid was replaced by inorganic acids, the TiO2 nanocrystals further aggregated into larger structures with various morphologies.
Constrained Growth of Ultrasmall BiOCl Nanodiscs with a Low Percentage of Exposed {001} Facets and Their Enhanced Photoreactivity under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Tailored crystal growth of two dimensional (2D) structured BiOCl photocatalyst is a quite challenging area and prerequisite for achieving superior photoreactivity. In this work, the constrained growth of ultrasmall BiOCl nanodiscs (similar to 65 nm in diameter) with a low percentage of exposed {001} facets (as low as similar to 59%) has been achieved through a facile hydrolysis route at normal temperature and pressure, by using sodium bismuthate (NaBiO3) and hydroxylammonium chloride (HONH2 center dot HCl) aqueous solution as the bismuth source and "four-in-one" reaction media, respectively. By means of diverse characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFF) method, it was found that hydroxylammonium chloride solution not only acts as a kind of solvent, reductant and chloride donator, but also plays a crucial role on the constrained growth of {001} facets in BiOCl nanodiscs via the two-stage growth mechanism. Additionally and more importantly, the as-prepared BiOCl nano discs exhibit superior sorption capacity and visible-light-induced photodegradation performance of Rhodamine B contaminant, to the conventional BiOCl nanosheets dominated with {001} facets. Unveiling the activity origin of ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Ultrathin layered semiconductors have attracted particular attention for various photocatalytic applications, while their surface-structure changes under reaction conditions have been rarely concerned. Herein, the dynamic evolutions of surface atomic and electronic structures on ultrathin BiOCl photocatalysts were firstly explored by combining synchronous-illumination X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SI-XPS) with X-ray diffraction (SI-XRD). The related results clearly reveal that the exposed {001} facets of ultrathin BiOCl are terminated with chlorine atoms instead of generally considered oxygen atoms. Under steady states, the outward migration of chlorine atoms on BiOCl (001) surfaces resulted in the formation of Bi, Cl, and O atoms with multiple-valence states and length decrease of ClO and BiO bond within the lattice phase. Under excitation states, the surface chlorine atoms return back to the lattice phase, leading to the elongation of BiCl and BiO bonds and the valence-state normalization of Bi, Cl, and O atoms. Owing to these significant atomic- and electronic-structure changes, ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets exhibit the prominent activity enhancement (21.4 μmol g−1 h−1) for CO2 reduction to CO compare with bulk BiOCl (3.3 μmol g−1 h−1).

Abstract:Porous BiOCl micro-flowers constructed from ultrathin nanosheets with nearly 100% {001} facets exposed were selectively prepared. The exposed {001} facets terminated with a high density of oxygen atoms and are not only favorable for the adsorption of the cationic dye RhB but also can accumulate the photogenerated electrons injected from excited RhB. These electrons can be captured by O(2) and transformed to reactive oxygen species, which possess a strong photooxidative ability to degrade the dye pollutants directly and easily. Therefore, the resultant BiOCl photocatalysts exhibit superior activity for indirect dye photosensitization degradation under visible light, with a rapid degradation rate and high photostability.
