Abstract:Context was an unconscious and latent way of thinking in ancient Greece.As a paradigm in contemporary philosophy,context has developed into the three paths: philosophy of language(including analytic philosophy,especially the ordinary language school of philosophy and Continental Ontology),knowledge of contextualism and ontology of context.Whether context is treated as a cognitive model of human beings or an academic theory or a pursuit of the ultimate,it is laden with ontic and ultimate pursuit.Therefore,it is quite advisable to analyze context in the three levels: ontology,epistemology and methodology,so as to build a metaphysical system for philosophical context.

Abstract:Context is a rich concept and is an elusive concept to define. The concept of context has been studied by philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and recently by computer scientists. Within each research community the term context was interpreted in a certain way that is well-suited for their goals, however no attempt was made to define context. In many areas of research in computer science, notably on web-based services, human-computer interaction (HCI), ubiquitous computing applications, and context-aware systems there is a need to provide a formal operational definition of context. In this brief survey an account of the early work on context, as well as the recent work on many working definitions of context, context modeling, and a formalization of context are given. An attempt is made to unify the different context models within the formalization. A brief commentary on the usefulness of the formalization in the development of context-aware and dependable systems is included.

Abstract:This paper aims to analyze the application strategies of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cognitive Linguistics emerged as a prominent theoretical framework, providing new theoretical support for English teaching. This paper first introduces the basic concepts and principles of Cognitive Linguistics. Then, it discusses how Cognitive Linguistics can be applied to promote vocabulary acquisition, including the use of prototype, conceptual metaphor and image schema. Based on the literature review and analysis, this paper further examines the significance of context and collocation in vocabulary learning. Finally, it summarizes the advantages and challenges of the application of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. This paper highlights the significant role of Cognitive Linguistics in vocabulary teaching and provides new insights and methods for future English teaching.

Abstract:This study explored the influence of context in translation by comparing the choice of words in the novel Luotuo Xiangzi translated respectively by Shi Xiaojing and Howard Goldblatt while they were translating “nao”. The results indicated that choice of words in translation could be influenced from three perspectives: linguistic context, situational context and cultural context. Thus it is essential for translators to properly understand the linguistic context and situational context , as well as to know the cultural background and explain it to the readers while it’s necessary.

Abstract:In recent years, thematic context has become a hot topic in foreign language teaching. The General Senior Secondary English Curriculum Standards (2017 Edition, Revised in 2020) lists the thematic context as the first element of the curriculum content, and emphasizes that all language learning activities should be carried out in a certain thematic context. However, in the actual English teaching, some teachers are out of context and only focus on the one-way transmission of knowledge in the textbook, regardless of whether students really understand and use it. Teaching English reading is not just about transferring knowledge, but about putting students in situations to find and solve problems. This paper discusses and analyzes some current researches, and proposes some optimization strategies for English reading teaching based on thematic contexts. In the teaching of English reading, teachers should teach the whole unit based on a certain thematic context and guided by rich reading materials and methods, so as to cultivate students' comprehensive ability and cross-cultural awareness.

Abstract:The cultural translation view considers translation as a cross-cultural communication activity. The paradigm and thinking of translation will also have profound changes in different cultural contexts. It can be seen from modern translation studies that the translation circle has paid full attention to the cultural differences between the two languages, and due to the profound influence of culture, translators have gradually formed their own unique and personalized cultural understanding and translation concepts in translation practice. Starting from the influence of cultural context on Chinese-English translation, this article explores the cultural context in Chinese-English translation combined with practical work experience, and the understanding and practice of translation activities under the cultural translation perspective.

Abstract:Hands-off data-driven learning is a data-based, student-oriented learning model characterized by inquiry and discovery. English context vocabulary teaching is the key to English teaching in colleges and an important indicator to evaluate the quality and level of college English teaching, which is a language teaching paradigm focusing on the language environment. Combining the two approaches can give students a more realistic, practical, and meaningful language learning experience. This paper analyzes the vocabulary learning level of two non-English major undergraduate classes at Southwest University of Political Science and Law before and after the application of the context experiment. The positive effect of context vocabulary teaching in the control groups is verified by comparing and analyzing the influence of context teaching based on hands-off data-driven learning on their scores and learning results between the experimental and control groups. It shows that the combination of context in English vocabulary teaching with hands-off data-driven learning can help to improve students’ ability to understand, absorb, and apply English vocabulary.

Abstract:Contextual information plays an important role in many computer vision tasks, such as object detection, video action detection, image classification, etc. Recognizing a single object or action out of context could be sometimes very challenging, and context information may help improve the understanding of a scene or an event greatly. Appearance context information, e.g., colors or shapes of the background of an object can improve the recognition accuracy of the object in the scene. Semantic context (e.g. a keyboard on an empty desk vs. a keyboard next to a desktop computer ) will improve accuracy and exclude unrelated events. Context information that are not in the image itself, such as the time or location of an images captured, can also help to decide whether certain event or action should occur. Other types of context (e.g. 3D structure of a building) will also provide additional information to improve the accuracy. In this survey, different context information that has been used in computer vision tasks is reviewed. We categorize context into different types and different levels. We also review available machine learning models and image/video datasets that can employ context information. Furthermore, we compare context-based integration and context-free integration in mainly two classes of tasks: image-based and video-based. Finally, this survey is concluded by a set of promising future directions in context learning and utilization.

Abstract:Interpretation of natural language is inherently context-sensitive. Most words in natural language are ambiguous and their meanings are heavily dependent on the linguistic context in which they are used. The study of lexical semantics can not be separated from the notion of context. This paper takes a contextual approach to lexical semantics and studies the linguistic context of lexical atoms, or "sticky" phrases such as "hot dog". Since such lexical atoms may occur frequently in unrestricted natural language text, recognizing them is crucial for understanding naturally-occurring text. The paper proposes several heuristic approaches to exploiting the linguistic context to identify lexical atoms from arbitrary natural language text.

Abstract:Context is an indispensable "background knowledge" of intercultural communication.Proper acts of communication are dependent upon context adaptation.Communicative competence is cultivated not only through the mastery of the linguistic techniques of the target language,but also through the profound insight into communicative culture.Only by understanding the deep culture of the target language can we theoretically disclose the reasons for complicated acts of communication,avoid varied "cultural mistakes" and "pragmatic inappropriateness" and foresee communicative behavior in advance and its probable outcome.

Abstract:A number of existing information retrieval systems propose the notion of query context to combine the knowledge of query and user into retrieval to reveal the most exact description of user's information needs. In this paper we interpret query context as a document consisting of sentences related to the current query. This kind of query context is used to re-estimate the relevance probabilities of top-ranked documents and then re-rank top-ranked documents. The experiments show that the proposed context-based approach for information retrieval can greatly improved relevance of search results.

Abstract:The comparative study of vocabulary is originally suggested by Ikudo Tajima.Compared with this former study of vocabulary,it is a brand-new academic field with fresh ideas.It takes a vocabulary group as an object of study.Its basic goal is to reveal cultural bases with language and to develop a new way of inter-cultural understanding and comparison.It has been known for a long time that the study of vocabulary falls behind the study of phoneme and grammar in priority.Also,the development of the study of vocabulary itself does not hold balance regarding the study of its composition unit,the single word.The study of vocabulary has already made advances and is in the lead.Furthermore,it has also yielded certain results.Regarding vocabulary,or the vocabulary group study,taking the whole parts of vocabulary of one language as an object of study is always unknown and is not taken into consideration.Comparative study of vocabulary ushers in this kind of group of vocabulary as an object of study.The vocabulary study of the meaning of vocabulary group is different from the other fields of linguistics that purely focus on the internal questions of a language.Simply solving the formal questions of a language may bring the study to completion.The reason is that to grasp the whole of the vocabulary itself is not an easy thing,much less are many questions that internal facts of a language only cannot solve.This is also the unique nature of vocabulary.Vocabulary and the facts outside the language have a close connection.It is impossible for the study of vocabulary to separate the culture that conceives the language.The phoneme and the grammar form the framework of a language and complete the expressions by the vocabulary.Therefore,the study of languages cannot be limited to phonemes and grammar.Only by the confluence of the study of vocabulary can a language unfold the whole picture.Language study cannot be limited to the internal study of language.If you do not see the relations that take its cultures,manners and customs into consideration,you cannot get to its essence.The basic nature of vocabulary lies in its quantity and meaning.The analysis of vocabulary must show these two kinds of properties.Neither quantity nor meaning only can completely show the fundamental structure of the vocabulary.When we show the quantitative property of vocabulary,we must grasp its ″meaning″.The question is that ″meaning″ is the existence that is most incompatible with the quantitative property.However,processing ″meaning″ with mathematical quantification and making comparative studies on the basis of demonstration,showing the overall system of vocabulary in a broad way,are the method suggested by comparative study of vocabulary or the ″Analytic Method of Structure of Meaning″.The comparative study of vocabulary began only about 10 years ago,but the attempts have been made in many languages.Large amounts of practices have been made in developing the theory,the methods,the setting of standards and so on.Massive data have been accumulated and a series of results have been acquired.Since 1998,ten international symposiums have been held separately in Japan,Indonesia,South Korea,Taiwan,and China.The comparative study of vocabulary that takes inter-cultural comparison and understanding as a basic goal has opened up a brand-new world.Its ideas that are different from the former have not only eliminated the biggest barrier which has prevented the study of vocabulary from advancing for a long time: the vocabulary is so large that you do not know where to begin.The use of computers has made the acquisition,analysis and demonstration of the massive data more convenient.When the question of the possibility of the study of vocabulary is solved,the conclusion obtained is also the prescriptive standards that are standardized and demonstrated.
