Abstract:The advent of the new millenniums witnesses dynamic changes in scientific community. Disciplinary combination and division have been more frequently observed in different fields of academic pursuit. Facing a situation like this, it is believed that a study of the relationships between the twin sciences (sociolinguistics and applied linguistics) not only promotes a more pragmatic philosophy in linguistic research but also highlights major teaching problems and encourages innovation in quality teaching on the part of Chinese EFL instructors. This paper reports on such a study, which is delineated in 6 parts. The first part relates the research focus to theoretical and practical considerations. The second part provides a diachronic survey of the two sciences. The ensuing two parts discuss the subject features and theoretical issues of the two disciplines, respectively. Problems concerning this interdisciplinary endeavor are identified and dealt with in the fifth part. Finally, the paper concludes with an emphasis on the significance of this research.

The historical development of applied linguistics is traced back to its roots in the mid-20th century, highlighting the major contributions and milestones that have shaped the field. Furthermore, the study explores the theoretical frameworks that underpin applied linguistics, behaviorism, sociocultural, connectionism, and Universal Grammar perspectives, providing a deeper understanding of the conceptual foundations of the discipline.

Current Issues in Philology and Pedagogical Linguistics

Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between applied linguistics and language discourse analysis in English language teaching. It explores the significance of these fields in enhancing language learning and teaching practices. The article discusses the theoretical foundations of applied linguistics and language discourse analysis. This study shows that applied linguistics and language discourse analysis share a close relationship as they both investigate language use and its practical applications. It is stated that it is essential to recognize the diversity of students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This can be achieved through a variety of approaches, including the use of discourse in language teaching and cultural responsive teaching. The significant contributions that applied linguistics and language discourse analysis have made to English Language Teaching, there is a strong call for continued research and implementation of these approaches in language teaching contexts. Furthermore, future research should focus on the effectiveness of different approaches and techniques in promoting applied linguistics and language discourse analysis in English language teaching.

Abstract:Applied Linguistics and Language Teacher Education is aimed at applied linguists who are interested in understanding more about the learning of novice teachers in their classes. The 21 studies in this volume provide information on the complexity of novice teachers’ learning and use of knowledge in a variety of applied linguistics classes such as SLA, Syntax, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Phonetics and Phonology, L2 Reading and Writing, Testing, and Content Based Instruction. These studies were conducted in a variety of contexts, from North and South America to Europe, Asia and Australia, and look at the preparation of teachers of English, Spanish and Chinese. Abstract:In the past two decades, how to reform ELT successfully has become a heated issue of discussion among researchers and English teachers in China. This paper suggests a geographic plus diachronic perspective of ELT studies with an aim to encourage more rational innovations in this field. To start with, it points out the important position of ELT studies and then narrows down the scope of survey by defining two conceptions of applied linguistics: a broad version and a narrow version. It goes on introducing two major paradigms in ELT studies in detail, the British tradition and the American school, followed by a discussion of existing problems and some suggestions to solve the problems.

Abstract:The aims of this paper are to analyse and compare the discourse functions of grammatical subjects used in research article abstracts in the disciplines of Applied Linguistics and Economics. The data for this study consisted of 60 research article abstracts published in 2010 and 2011 in the journals of Applied Linguistics and Oxford Economic Papers. The corpus was analysed using the classification of discourse functions of grammatical subjects established by Gosden. The analysis revealed disciplinary differences concerning the discourse functions enacted by the application of the grammatical subject. These findings add to the claim that academic writing (research article abstract writing in this study) is shaped by the writer's disciplinary background with particular reference to the use of the grammatical subject as a theme in text development.

Abstract:British and American literature is one of the mainstreams of world literature and occupies a pivotal position in the world literary arena. However, due to the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, Chinese people inevitably have to face the constraints of various factors when they appreciate, study and analyze British and American literature. In order to solve this problem, this paper attempts to make a deep analysis of the translated works of British and American literature from a cross-cultural perspective, so that readers can better understand the ideological implications and values contained in British and American literature, so that they can better appreciate art.

Abstract:Background: Provide an adequate background covering the literature review and the gap of the research with other relevant former research works. Aim: The study aims of linguistics as it relates to the instruction of the English language will be the focus of this particular piece of writing. Method: The literature review, which is more often referred to as library research, serves as the foundation for the data analysis. Throughout the process of data collecting, the comparison technique and the descriptive approach are used. Findings: The most recent results from research in applied linguistics conducted on language instruction are presented here. Teaching the English language is used as an example to integrate it with practical language teaching theory, which then allows for the creation of relevant teaching experiments. According to the experiment results, applied linguistic teaching theory may raise the students' desire for learning, which may boost the efficiency with which they acquire a second language. Finally, the theory of applied linguistics should be built on language teaching, that the method of language teaching should be modified, and that improvements should be made to the information transferred to students.

Abstract:The development of the historical comparative linguistics (HCL) in the middle of Nineteenth century presented the diversified research patterns,the fringe ones of which were etymology,linguistic paleontology and classic philology,the main one of which was the naturalism school. The fringe patterns expanded the research realm of HCL,while the main pattern brought up and practiced the main principles of historical comparative methods.This text systematizes the main patterns of HCL and gives a deep reflection to it on the basis of the exploration of historical function of every pattern.

Abstract:This paper comments on Rampton's criticisms of a position characterised by him as “Brumfit/Widdowson”. Applied linguistics is examined as a research project analogous to other “disciplines” and is shown to share a range of characteristics with them. Boundaries and models are ways of imposing metaphorical order on experiental chaos and are provisional, being discarded when their usefulness is exhausted. The need for cross‐disciplinary perspectives in language studies is imposed by the nature of an object of study instantiated in human behaviour or human mental processes. Applied linguistics distinctively models linguistic practices and is the meeting place for scholars concerned with understanding the linguistic elements of social, psychological, pedagogical, economic or any other activity or belief system. It is argued that applied linguistics shares a position intersecting with neighbouring sciences and with all other sciences, each of which demarcates its own space in contested and shared ground.

Studies on James Legge's English Translation of Traditional Chinese Classics and Reflections on the Necessity of the Interdisciplinary Approach in Translation Studies

Abstract:On the basis of a general survey of the worldwide studies on the Scottish missionary sinologist James Legge's translation of traditional Chinese classics, it is pointed out in the article that although the publications concerned now available are characterized by the strong points of different disciplines respectively, they are sometimes spoilt by the limited research range of these academic fields. More often than not, historians and researchers of philosophy and religion have been unable to probe deep linguistically into the translated texts while linguists have failed to analyze translations from the perspectives of history, philosophy or religion. This kind of research may be incomplete by nature and inevitably results in less convincing conclusions. Therefore, the interdisciplinary approach is highly necessary in translation research.

Abstract:This paper takes a meta-analysis and synthesis approach to emphasize systemic functional linguistics' contribution to translation studies. A coding book was designed to analyze 123 studies collected through email inquiry, database search, and manual examination. The paper reports on the substantive features and methodological features of the studies. Content analysis was presented on four major research themes: general translation, genre translation, interpreting, and translation training. After discussing the synthesis results, the paper is concluded with implications for future research.

Abstract:Interdisciplinary Study is a research method of comparative literature, but such comparison also has a far-ranging applied foreground for the research on Chinese classical literature. The Chinese classical idea of pan-literature, the tradition of syncretism literature, history and philosophy, and the affinity of literature and art, all these aspects provide a rather wide area for the comparison between different subjects. Thus, since the 1980s, this method developed rapidly and became the most important one among the classical literature research phenomena during that period. If connecting with the practical need of classical literature research and applying it neatly, we are sure that it will help us not only to learn classical literature's holistic characteristic well, but also to review the idiographic literary phenomenon thoroughly.

Theory and Practice in Language Studies

Abstract:In second language teaching, materials play a unique role and the demand of developing language-teaching materials has been increasing. The textbook, an integral part of language-teaching materials, to some extent dominates the contents of teaching and learning and has a deep influence on curriculum. Textbooks for extensive reading apparently highlights this feature while some kind of series adopted in universities have several shortcomings in the representativeness of the articles and their variety of the categories, etc. which makes it hard to play an active role and have a positive impact in teaching and learning process. Some teachers ignore the development of this ability and the significant contribution they can make to evaluating and selecting textbooks. Thus, the author collects basic information from one series of textbooks and analyzes it systematically, and then shows overall comments with detailed suggestions on contents as: selecting more articles from representative writers; increasing articles about history and philosophy; selecting more current articles from magazines; adding more poems and attaching more detailed introductions about the authors and reference books to read. These suggestions will provide some implication for extensive reading textbook evaluation and selection, thereby, the selected textbooks can be at the good service for extensive reading teaching and teachers can get a self-development in the process.
