Abstract:Physical ageing is the generic term for irreversible processes in glassy materials resulting from molecular rearrangements. One formalism for describing such ageing processes involves the concept of material time, which may be thought of as time measured on a clock whose rate changes as the glass ages. Experimental determination of material time has so far not been realized, however. Here, we show how dynamic light-scattering measurements provide a way forward. We determined the material time for an ageing sample of the glass-former 1-phenyl-1-propanol after temperature jumps close to the glass transition from the time-autocorrelation function of the intensity fluctuations probed by multispeckle dynamic light scattering. These fluctuations are shown to be stationary and reversible when regarded as a function of the material time. The glass-forming colloidal synthetic clay Laponite and a chemically ageing curing epoxy are also shown to display material-time-reversible scattered-light intensity fluctuations, and simulations of an ageing binary system monitoring the potential energy confirm material-time reversibility. In addition to demonstrating direct measurements of the material time, our findings identify a fundamental property of ageing in quite different contexts that presents a challenge to the current theories of ageing.

Abstract:The paradigmatic view on the transformation of a supercooled liquid into a glass, so‐called vitrification or glass transition, and the subsequent time evolution of the non‐equilibrium glass, addressed as physical aging, relies on the exclusive role of the main α relaxation with super‐Arrhenius temperature dependence. The aim of the present review is to carefully scrutinize the wealth of recent experimental results, above all in polymeric glasses, showing the relevance of other relaxational mechanisms in both vitrification and physical aging. While the α relaxation bears dominant role in both phenomena in proximity of the glass transition temperature, Tg , a broad view on a much wider temperature range indicates that vitrification and physical aging are mediated by non‐α mechanisms of equilibration. This review also shows that a reduction of the typical time scale of equilibration can be achieved in glasses with large free interface, namely with reduced sample size. In this way, fast non‐α mechanisms of equilibration can be exploited to convey glasses to low energy states in experimentally feasible time scales, thereby attaining information on the existence of the so‐called "ideal glass" in small sized samples.

Abstract:Although it has been known for half a century that the physical aging of glasses in experiments is described well by a linear thermal-history convolution integral over the so-called material time, the microscopic definition and interpretation of the material time remains a mystery. We propose that the material-time increase over a given time interval reflects the distance traveled by the system's particles. Different possible distance measures are discussed, starting from the standard mean-square displacement and its inherent-state version that excludes the vibrational contribution. The viewpoint adopted, which is inspired by and closely related to pioneering works of Cugliandolo and Kurchan of the 1990s, implies a "geometric reversibility" and a "unique-triangle property" characterizing the system's path in configuration space during aging. Both of these properties are inherited from equilibrium; they are confirmed by computer simulations of an aging binary Lennard-Jones system. Our simulations show that the slow particles control the material time. This motivates a "dynamic-rigidity-percolation" picture of physical aging. The numerical data show that the material time is dominated by the slowest particles' inherent mean-square displacement, which is conveniently quantified by the inherent harmonic mean-square displacement. This distance measure collapses data for potential-energy aging well in the sense that the normalized relaxation functions following different temperature jumps are almost the same function of the material time. Finally, the standard Tool-Narayanaswamy linear material-time convolution integral description of physical aging is derived from the assumption that when time is replaced by distance in the above sense, an aging system is described by the same expression as that of linear-response theory.

Abstract:We employ fast scanning calorimetry to monitor the isothermal aging kinetics in glassy polymers, complemented with measurements on other glasses. Apart from following the time evolution of the glass enthalpic state, we monitor the aging kinetics of the devitrification width on heating, ΔTdev . We find that significantly below the glass transition temperature, Tg , the glass enthalpy attains equilibrium earlier than ΔTdev , which evolves at long aging times toward enhanced heterogeneity. Abstract:It is well established that glassy materials can undergo out-of-equilibrium aging, i.e., their properties gradually change over time. There is rapidly growing evidence that dense active and living systems also exhibit many features of glassy behavior, but it is still largely unknown if and how physical aging is manifested in such non-Hamiltonian glassy materials. Here we show, by means of computer simulations, that the aging dynamics of active thermal glasses is governed by a complex interplay of different relaxation mechanisms. Notably, we identify a time-dependent competition between thermal and active effects, which gives rise to an explicitly age-dependent effective temperature. As a consequence, the often-invoked mapping between an active system and a passive one with a unique, higher effective temperature rigorously breaks down upon aging. Moreover, unlike passive aging phenomenology, we find that the degree of dynamic heterogeneity in active aging systems is relatively small and remarkably constant with age. Classifying the age of a glass based on structural properties: A machine learning approach

Abstract:It is well established that physical aging of amorphous solids is governed by a marked change in dynamical properties as the material becomes older. Conversely, structural properties such as the radial distribution function exhibit only a very weak age dependence, usually deemed negligible with respect to the numerical noise. Here we demonstrate that the extremely weak age-dependent changes in structure are, in fact, sufficient to reliably assess the age of a glass with the support of machine learning. We employ a supervised learning method to predict the age of a glass based on the system's instantaneous radial distribution function. Specifically, we train a multilayer perceptron for a model glass former quenched to different temperatures and find that this neural network can accurately classify the age of our system across at least 4 orders of magnitude in time. Our analysis also reveals which structural features encode the most useful information. Abstract:Glasses are non-equilibrium, amorphous materials. They undergo glassy-state structural relaxation towards thermodynamic equilibrium. Consequently, glasses exhibit time-dependent engineering properties in a process termed physical aging. Understanding structural relaxation is important for predicting long-term material properties and useful lifetimes. Here, we highlight the influence of nanoscale confinement and interfaces on the structural relaxation of polymers. Whenever possible, we also discuss correlations or lack thereof between the well-documented influence of confinement on the glass transition temperature (T-g). How confinement might be used to engineer different aging responses in polymer glasses is also mentioned. Finally, we conclude with perspectives and future work.
Intermittent cluster dynamics and temporal fractional diffusion in a bulk metallic glass

Abstract:Glassy solids evolve towards lower-energy structural states by physical aging. This can be characterized by structural relaxation times, the assessment of which is essential for understanding the glass' time-dependent property changes. Conducted over short times, a continuous increase of relaxation times with time is seen, suggesting a time-dependent dissipative transport mechanism. By focusing on micro-structural rearrangements at the atomic-scale, we demonstrate the emergence of sub-diffusive anomalous transport and therefore temporal fractional diffusion in a metallic glass, which we track via coherent x-ray scattering conducted over more than 300,000 s. At the longest probed decorrelation times, a transition from classical stretched exponential to a power-law behavior occurs, which in concert with atomistic simulations reveals collective and intermittent atomic motion. Our observations give a physical basis for classical stretched exponential relaxation behavior, uncover a new power-law governed collective transport regime for metallic glasses at long and practically relevant time-scales, and demonstrate a rich and highly non-monotonous aging response in a glassy solid, thereby challenging the common framework of homogeneous aging and atomic scale diffusion.

Abstract:The aging dynamics of a colloidal glass has been studied by multiangle Dynamic Light Scattering, Neutron Spin Echo, X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics simulations. The two relaxation processes, microscopic (fast) and structural (slow), have been investigated in an unprecedentedly wide range of time and length scales covering both ergodic and nonergodic regimes. The microscopic relaxation time remains diffusive at all length scales across the glass transition scaling with wavevector Q as Q^{-2}. The length-scale dependence of structural relaxation time changes from diffusive, characterized by a Q^{-2}-dependence in the early stages of aging, to Q^{-1}- dependence in the full aging regime which marks a discontinuous hopping dynamics. Both regimes are associated with a stretched behaviour of the correlation functions. We expect these findings to provide a general description of both relaxations across the glass transition.

Dichotomic Aging Behaviour in a Colloidal Glass

Abstract:An unexpected dichotomic long time aging behaviour is observed in a glassy colloidal clay suspension investigated by X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering. In the long time aging regime the intensity autocorrelations are non-exponential, following the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts functional form with exponent bQ. We show that for spontaneously aged samples a stretched behaviour (\beta_Q < 1) is always found. Surprisingly a compressed exponent (\beta_Q > 1) appears only when the system is rejuvenated by application of a shear field. In both cases the relaxation times scale as Q^{-1}. These observations shed light on the origin of compressed exponential behaviour and helps in classifying previous results in the literature on anomalous dynamics.

Abstract:Physical aging is an inherent property of glassy matter, but understanding its microscopic mechanism remains a challenge particularly at the particle level. In this work, we use a confocal microscope to in-situ trace the particle trajectories in a 3D colloidal glass for 73000 s, aiming at resolving the aging dynamics. By calculating the mean square displacement of particle motions, we find that the glass aging with time can be divided into three stages: β relaxation, α relaxation and free diffusion. The system's mean square displacement at each aging state is quantitatively resolved into three contributions of particle dynamics modes: vibration within the nearest-neighbor cages, hopping between cages and cooperative rearrangement. We further calculate the particle's free volume and find that the β-to-α transition is accompanied by the temporary increase of the system-averaged free volume due to pronounced hops of particles. Nevertheless, the temporal autocorrelation of the free volume spatial distribution still obeys a monotonically stretched exponential decay with an exponent of 0.76, which is related to the sub-diffusion dynamics of cooperative rearrangements and hops mixed in α relaxation. According to the resolved vibrational displacements, we calculate the vibrational density of states of this 3D glass, and the characteristic boson peak is reproduced at low frequencies. Our findings shed insight into the particle-level aging dynamics of a real glass under purely thermal activation.

Bringing together two paradigms of non-equilibrium: Fragile versus robust aging in driven glassy systems

Abstract:There are two key paradigms for non-equilibrium dynamics: on the one hand, aging towards an equilibrium state that cannot be reached on reasonable timescales; on the other, external driving that can lead to non-equilibrium steady states. We explore how these two mechanisms interact, by studying the behaviour of trap models, which are paradigmatic descriptions of slow glassy dynamics, when driven by trajectory bias towards high or low activity. To diagnose whether the driven systems continue to age, we establish a framework for mapping the biased dynamics to a Markovian time evolution with time-dependent transition rates. We find that the original aging dynamics reacts in two qualitatively distinct ways to the driving: it can be destroyed by driving of any nonzero strength (fragile aging), whereby the dynamics either reaches an active steady state or effectively freezes; or it can persist within a finite range of driving strengths around the undriven case (robust aging). This classification into fragile and robust aging could form the basis for distinguishing different universality classes of aging dynamics.

Abstract:Glasses are out-of-equilibrium systems aging under the crystallization threat. During ordinary glass formation, the atomic diffusion slows down rendering its experimental investigation impractically long, to the extent that a timescale divergence is taken for granted by many. We circumvent here these limitations, taking advantage of a wide family of glasses rapidly obtained by physical vapor deposition directly into the solid state, endowed with different "ages" rivaling those reached by standard cooling and waiting for millennia. Isothermally probing the mechanical response of each of these glasses, we infer a correspondence with viscosity along the equilibrium line, up to exapoise values. We find a dependence of the elastic modulus on the glass age, which, traced back to temperature steepness index of the viscosity, tears down one of the cornerstones of several glass transition theories: the dynamical divergence. Critically, our results suggest that the conventional wisdom picture of a glass ceasing to flow at finite temperature could be wrong.

Abstract:The relaxation dynamics of many disordered systems, such as structural glasses, proteins, granular materials or spin glasses, is not completely frozen even at very low temperatures. This residual motion leads to a change of the properties of the material, a process commonly called aging. Despite recent advances in the theoretical description of such aging processes, the microscopic mechanisms leading to the aging dynamics are still a matter of dispute. In this Letter we investigate the aging dynamics of a simple glass former by means of molecular dynamics computer simulation. Using the concept of the inherent structure we give evidence that aging dynamics can be understood as a decrease of the effective configurational temperature T of the system. From our results we conclude that the equilibration process is faster when the system is quenched to T_c, the critical T of mode-coupling theory, and that thermodynamic concepts are useful to describe the out-of-equilibrium aging process.

Abstract:Aging amorphous polymeric materials undergo free volume relaxation, which causes slowing down of the relaxation dynamics as a function of time. The resulting time dependency poses difficulties in predicting their long time physical behavior. In this work, we apply effective time domain approach to the experimental data on aging amorphous polymers and demonstrate that it enables prediction of long time behavior over the extraordinary time scales. We demonstrate that, unlike the conventional methods, the proposed effective time domain approach can account for physical aging that occurs over the duration of the experiments. Furthermore, this procedure successfully describes time temperature superposition and time stress superposition. It can also allow incorporation of varying dependences of relaxation time on aging time as well as complicated but known deformation history in the same experiments. This work strongly suggests that the effective time domain approach can act as an important tool to analyze the long time physical behavior of aging amorphous polymeric materials. Simulations of Stellar Collisions Involving Pre-Main Sequence Stars

Abstract:In this paper, we present the results of smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations of collisions between pre-main sequence stars and a variety of other kinds of stars. Simulations over a range of impact parameters and velocities were performed. We find that pre-main sequence stars tend to ``wrap themselves'' around their impactor. We discuss the probable evolutionary state of products of collisions between pre-main sequence stars and pre-main sequence, main sequence, giant branch, and compact stars. The nature of the collision product does not depend strongly on the impact parameter or the velocity of the collision.

Abstract:Aging phenomena in complex systems have been used as an important tool to investigate the physics of complexity. In particular, aging effects in spin glasses, measured using the thermoremanent magnetization decays, have been instrumental as a probe of complex equilibrium and nonequilibrium dynamics. In this Letter, we show that aging found in spin glass materials has a finite lifetime. After the aging part of the decay has ended, we find a post-aging decay which is apparently logarithmic in nature. This decay is independent of the waiting time and part of the same mechanism that produces aging.
