Abstract:Aging dynamics in glassy systems is investigated by considering the hopping motion in a rugged energy landscape whose deep minima are characterized by an exponential density of states. In particular we explore the behavior of a generic two-time correlation function Pi(t_w+t,t_w) below the glass transition temperature T_g when both the observation time t and the waiting time t_w become large. We show the occurrence of ordinary scaling behavior, which includes normal aging and subaging, and the possible simultaneous occurrence of generalized scaling behavior. Which situation occurs depends on the form of the effective transition rates between the low lying states. Employing a ``Partial Equilibrium Concept'', the exponents of the aging and the asymptotic form of the scaling functions are obtained both by simple scaling arguments and by analytical calculations. The predicted scaling properties compare well with Monte-Carlo simulations in dimensions d = 1-1000 and it is argued that a mean-field type treatment of the hopping motion fails to describe the aging dynamics in any dimension. Implications for more general situations involving different forms of transition rates and the occurrence of many scaling regimes in the t-t_w plane are pointed out.

Abstract:In glassy materials aging proceeds at large times via thermal activation. We show that this can lead to negative dynamical response functions and novel and well-defined violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, in particular, negative fluctuation-dissipation ratios. Our analysis is based on detailed theoretical and numerical results for the activated aging regime of simple kinetically constrained models. The results are relevant to a variety of physical situations such as aging in glass-formers, thermally activated domain growth and granular compaction.

Abstract:We study the off-equilibrium relaxational dynamics of the Amit-Roginsky $\phi^3$ field theory, for which the mode coupling approximation is exact. We show that complex phenomena such as aging and ergodicity breaking are present at low temperature, similarly to what is found in long range spin glasses. This is a generalization of mode coupling theory of the structural glass transition to off-equilibrium situations.

Abstract:Physical aging is an inherent property of glassy matter, but understanding its microscopic mechanism remains a challenge particularly at the particle level. In this work, we use a confocal microscope to in-situ trace the particle trajectories in a 3D colloidal glass for 73000 s, aiming at resolving the aging dynamics. By calculating the mean square displacement of particle motions, we find that the glass aging with time can be divided into three stages: β relaxation, α relaxation and free diffusion. The system's mean square displacement at each aging state is quantitatively resolved into three contributions of particle dynamics modes: vibration within the nearest-neighbor cages, hopping between cages and cooperative rearrangement. We further calculate the particle's free volume and find that the β-to-α transition is accompanied by the temporary increase of the system-averaged free volume due to pronounced hops of particles. Nevertheless, the temporal autocorrelation of the free volume spatial distribution still obeys a monotonically stretched exponential decay with an exponent of 0.76, which is related to the sub-diffusion dynamics of cooperative rearrangements and hops mixed in α relaxation. According to the resolved vibrational displacements, we calculate the vibrational density of states of this 3D glass, and the characteristic boson peak is reproduced at low frequencies. Our findings shed insight into the particle-level aging dynamics of a real glass under purely thermal activation.

Abstract:The atomistic mechanisms occurring during the processes of aging and rejuvenation in glassy materials involve very small structural rearrangements that are extremely difficult to capture experimentally. Here we use in-situ X-ray diffraction to investigate the structural rearrangements during annealing from 77 K up to the crystallization temperature in Cu44Zr44Al8Hf2Co2 bulk metallic glass rejuvenated by high pressure torsion performed at cryogenic temperatures and at room temperature. Using a measure of the configurational entropy calculated from the X-ray pair correlation function, the structural footprint of the deformation-induced rejuvenation in bulk metallic glass is revealed. With synchrotron radiation, temperature and time resolutions comparable to calorimetric experiments are possible. This opens hitherto unavailable experimental possibilities allowing to unambiguously correlate changes in atomic configuration and structure to calorimetrically observed signals and can attribute those to changes of the dynamic and vibrational relaxations ({\alpha}-, {\beta}- and {\gamma}-transition) in glassy materials. The results suggest that the structural footprint of the {\beta}-transition is related to entropic relaxation with characteristics of a first-order transition. Dynamic mechanical analysis data shows that in the range of the {\beta}-transition, non-reversible structural rearrangements are preferentially activated. The low-temperature {\gamma}-transition is mostly triggering reversible deformations and shows a change of slope in the entropic footprint suggesting second-order characteristics.

Abstract:With a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation, the aging of the two-dimensional dynamic Ising and XY models is numerically studied. Starting from a disordered state, the systems are quenched to critical temperature Tc and then evolve according to dynamics of model A. By calculating the autocorrelation function A(t,t′) we observe the aging phenomenon for both spin systems. Then, relatively accurate values of the dynamic critical exponent λc and z are estimated. Especially, we confirm that for the two-dimensional XY model, there is a strong logarithmic correction to scaling in the dynamic relaxation starting from a completely disordered.

Abstract:The aging dynamics of a colloidal glass has been studied by multiangle Dynamic Light Scattering, Neutron Spin Echo, X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics simulations. The two relaxation processes, microscopic (fast) and structural (slow), have been investigated in an unprecedentedly wide range of time and length scales covering both ergodic and nonergodic regimes. The microscopic relaxation time remains diffusive at all length scales across the glass transition scaling with wavevector Q as Q^{-2}. The length-scale dependence of structural relaxation time changes from diffusive, characterized by a Q^{-2}-dependence in the early stages of aging, to Q^{-1}- dependence in the full aging regime which marks a discontinuous hopping dynamics. Both regimes are associated with a stretched behaviour of the correlation functions. We expect these findings to provide a general description of both relaxations across the glass transition.

Abstract:Linear response functions of aging systems are routinely interpreted using the scaling variable $t_{\rm obs}/t_{\rm w}^\mu$,where $t_{\rm w}$ is the time at which the field conjugated to the response is turned on or off, and where $t_{\rm obs}$ is the `observation' time elapsed from the field change. The response curve obtained for different values of $t_w$ are usually collapsed using values of $\mu$ slightly below one, a scaling behavior generally known as \emph{sub-aging}. Recent spin glass Thermoremanent Magnetization experiments have shown that the value of $\mu$ is strongly affected by the form of the initial cooling protocol (Rodriguez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 037203, 2003), and even more importantly, (Kenning et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 057201, 2006) that the $t_{\rm w}$ dependence of the response curves vanishes altogether in the limit $t_{\rm obs} \gg t_{\rm w}$. The latter result shows that the widely used $t_{\rm obs}/t_{\rm w}^\mu$ scaling of linear response data cannot be generally valid, and casts some doubt on the theoretical significance of the exponent $\mu$. In this work, a common mechanism is proposed for the origin of both sub-aging and end of aging behavior in glassy dynamics. The mechanism combines real and configuration space properties of the state produced by the initial thermal quench which initiates the aging process.

Abstract:We investigate the structural relaxation of a soft-sphere liquid quenched isochorically (ϕ = 0.7) and instantaneously to different temperatures Tf above and below the glass transition. For this, we combine extensive Brownian dynamics simulations and theoretical calculations based on the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory. The response of the liquid to a quench generally consists of a sub-linear increase of the α-relaxation time with system's age. Approaching the ideal glass-transition temperature from above (Tf > Ta), sub-aging appears as a transient process describing a broad equilibration crossover for quenches to nearly arrested states. This allows us to empirically determine an equilibration timescale teq(Tf) that becomes increasingly longer as Tf approaches Ta. For quenches inside the glass (Tf ≤ Ta), the growth rate of the structural relaxation time becomes progressively larger as Tf decreases and, unlike the equilibration scenario, τα remains evolving within the whole observation time-window. These features are consistently found in theory and simulations with remarkable semi-quantitative agreement and coincide with those revealed in a previous and complementary study [P. Mendoza-Méndez et al., Phys. Rev. 96, 022608 (2017)] that considered a sequence of quenches with fixed final temperature Tf = 0 but increasing ϕ toward the hard-sphere dynamical arrest volume fraction ϕHS a=0.582. The NE-SCGLE analysis, however, unveils various fundamental aspects of the glass transition, involving the abrupt passage from the ordinary equilibration scenario to the persistent aging effects that are characteristic of glass-forming liquids. The theory also explains that, within the time window of any experimental observation, this can only be observed as a continuous crossover.

Abstract:Disordered systems generically exhibit aging and a glass transition. Previous studies have long suggested that non-reciprocity tends to destroy glassiness. Here, we show that this is not always the case using a bipartite spherical Sherrington-Kirpatrick model that describes the antagonistic coupling between two identical complex agents modeled as macroscopic spin glasses. Our dynamical mean field theory calculations reveal an exceptional-point mediated transition from a static disorder phase to an oscillating amorphous phase as well as non-reciprocal aging with slow dynamics and oscillations.

Abstract:We use X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy to investigate the structural relaxation process in a metallic glass on the atomic length scale. We report evidence for a dynamical crossover between the supercooled liquid phase and the metastable glassy state, suggesting different origins of the relaxation process across the transition. Furthermore, using different cooling rates we observe a complex hierarchy of dynamic processes characterized by distinct aging regimes. Strong analogies with the aging dynamics of soft glassy materials, such as gels and concentrated colloidal suspensions, point at stress relaxation as a universal mechanism driving the relaxation dynamics of out-of-equilibrium systems.

Abstract:The mean-field dynamics of a particle in a random, but short range correlated potential, offers the opportunity of observing both aging and driven stationary regimes. Using a geometrical approach previously introduced by the author, we study here the relation between these two situations, in the pure relaxational limit, i.e. the zero temperature case. In the stationary regime, the velocity(v) -force(f) characteristics is a power law, while the characteristic times scale like powers of v, in agreement with an early proposal by Horner. The cross-over between the aging, linear-response regime and the non linear stationary regime is smooth, and we propose a parametrisation of the correlation functions valid in both cases, by means of an "effective time". We conclude that aging and non linear response are dual manifestations of a single out-of-equilibrium state, which might be a generic situation.

Abstract:The aging effects of a 'diffusing glass', a single elastic string diffusing in a two-dimensional disordered media assisted by thermal noise are studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We find for the first time convincing numerical evidence of non-trivial aging effects both in the linear response against transverse force and the associated correlation function. Our results retain some important predictions of the conventional dynamical mean-field theory (MFT) but also reveal remarkable differences from it.

Abstract:Many complex and disordered systems fail to reach equilibrium after they have been quenched or perturbed. Instead, they sluggishly relax toward equilibrium at an ever-slowing, history-dependent rate, a process termed physical aging. The microscopic processes underlying the dynamic slow-down during aging and the reason for its similar occurrence in different systems remain poorly understood. Here, we reveal the structural mechanism underlying logarithmic aging in disordered mechanical systems, through experiments in crumpled sheets and simulations of a disordered network of bi-stable elastic elements. We show that under load, the system self-organizes to a metastable state poised on the verge of an instability, where it can remain for long, but finite times. The system's relaxation is intermittent, advancing via rapid sequences of instabilities, grouped into self-similar, aging avalanches. Crucially, the quiescent dwell times between avalanches grow in proportion to the system's age, due to a slow increase of the lowest effective energy barrier, which leads to logarithmic aging.

Abstract:It is well established that glassy materials can undergo out-of-equilibrium aging, i.e., their properties gradually change over time. There is rapidly growing evidence that dense active and living systems also exhibit many features of glassy behavior, but it is still largely unknown if and how physical aging is manifested in such non-Hamiltonian glassy materials. Here we show, by means of computer simulations, that the aging dynamics of active thermal glasses is governed by a complex interplay of different relaxation mechanisms. Notably, we identify a time-dependent competition between thermal and active effects, which gives rise to an explicitly age-dependent effective temperature. As a consequence, the often-invoked mapping between an active system and a passive one with a unique, higher effective temperature rigorously breaks down upon aging. Moreover, unlike passive aging phenomenology, we find that the degree of dynamic heterogeneity in active aging systems is relatively small and remarkably constant with age. Abstract:With Monte Carlo methods, we simulate dynamic relaxation processes of the two-dimensional XY model at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition temperature and below, starting from both ordered and disordered initial states. The two-time correlation function A(t',t) is measured, and aging phenomena are investigated. The power-law correction in the spatial correlation length xi(t) for relaxation with an ordered initial state and the logarithmic correction for relaxation with a disordered initial state are carefully analyzed. The scaling functions of A(t',t) are then extracted.

Abstract:The aging behavior of polymer glass, poly(methyl methacrylate), has been investigated through the measurement of ac dielectric susceptibility ata fixed frequency after a temperature shift $\Delta T$ ($\le $ 20 K)between two temperatures, $T_1$ and $T_2$. A crossover from cumulative aging to non-cumulative aging could be observed with increasing $\Delta T$ using a twin temperature ($T$-) shift measurement. Based on a growth law of a dynamical coherent length given by activated dynamics, we obtained a unique coherent length for positive and negative $T$-shifts. The possibility of the existence of temperature chaos in polymer glasses is discussed.

Abstract:AbstractWe employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the relaxation properties of the two-dimensional Coulomb glass in disordered semiconductors and the three-dimensional Bose glass in type-II superconductors in the presence of extended linear defects. We investigate the effects of adding non-zero random on-site energies from different distributions on the properties of the correlation-induced Coulomb gap in the density of states (DOS) and on the non-equilibrium aging kinetics highlighted by the density autocorrelation functions. We also probe the sensitivity of the system’s equilibrium and non-equilibrium relaxation properties to instantaneous changes in the density of charge carriers in the Coulomb glass or flux lines in the Bose glass.

Abstract:Understanding the atomistic mechanisms of relaxation dynamics in metallic glasses remains a longstanding challenge. Here, using microsecond time scale molecular dynamics simulations, three main relaxation stages in metallic glasses are identified. At about 0.6T g , chemical composition plays a dominant role in the relaxation, manifested by stress accumulation and only minimal variations in structure. As T g approaches, the confluence of structural heterogeneity and chemical composition leads to the decoupling of relaxation mechanisms. At this temperature, the relaxation results in a structure with a lower energy state and a lower level of stress. In the supercooled liquid regime, an extensive increase in the number of closed-packed icosahedral clusters is responsible for accelerated structural relaxation while their packing frustration leads to the accumulation of intrinsic residual stresses in the glass. The atomistic origin of these dynamic relaxation modes is discussed in terms of structural, chemical composition and stress variations.
