Abstract:Based on a fixed point theorem by Shi and Ye for amenable group actions on dendrites, we show that if X is a Peano continuum having the property that for any there are only finitely many circles in X with diameters , then there exists no expansive polycyclic group action on X . As a corollary, we obtain that local dendrites and Peano continua containing no -curves admit no expansive polycyclic group actions.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact metric space and $G$ a finitely generated group. Suppose $\phi:G\rightarrow {\rm Homeo}(X)$ is a continuous action. We show that if $\phi$ is both distal and expansive, then $X$ must be finite. A counterexample is constructed to show the necessity of finite generation condition on $G$. This is also a supplement to a result due to Auslander-Glasner-Weiss which says that every distal action by a finitely generated group on a zero-dimensional compactum is equicontinuous.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group with no finitely generated subgroup of exponential growth. We show that every action of $G$ on a countable set preserving a linear (respectively, circular) order can be realised as the restriction of some action by $C^1$ diffeomorphisms on an interval (respectively, the circle) to an invariant subset. As a consequence, every action of $G$ by homeomorphisms on a compact connected one-manifold can be made $C^1$ upon passing to a semi-conjugate action. The proof is based on a functional characterisation of groups of local subexponential growth.

Abstract:This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth $4k$-dimensional orientable closed manifold, and assume that $M$ has at most two non-zero Pontrjagin numbers which are associated to the top dimensional Pontrjagin class and the square of the middle dimensional Pontrjagin class. We prove that the signature of $M$ being equal to $1$ and the $\hat{A}$-genus of $M$ vanishing cannot hold at the same time except $\dim M=8, 16$. As an application, we claim that the dimensions of oriented $S^1$-manifolds with exactly three fixed points are only $4, 8$ and $16$, and the rational projective plane whose dimension is greater than $16$ has no smooth non-trivial $S^1$-action.

Abstract:A subgroup of is Möbius-like if every element is conjugate to an element of . In general, a Möbius-like subgroup of is not necessarily (semi-)conjugate to a subgroup of , as discovered by Kovačević (Trans Am Math Soc 351:4823–4835, 1999). Here we determine simple dynamical criteria for the existence of such a (semi-)conjugacy. We show that Möbius-like subgroups of which are elementary (namely, preserving a Borel probability measure), are semi-conjugate to subgroups of . On the other hand, we provide an example of elementary subgroup of satisfying that every non-trivial element fixes at most 2 points, which is not isomorphic to any subgroup of . Finally, we show that non-elementary, non-locally discrete subgroups acting with at most N fixed points are conjugate to a dense subgroup of some finite central extension of .

Harmonic measures and rigidity for surface group actions on the circle

Abstract:We study rigidity properties of actions of a torsion-free lattice of $\operatorname{PSU}(1,1)$ on the circle $S^1$. We follow the approaches of Frankel and Thurston proposed in preprints via foliated harmonic measures on the suspension bundles. Our main results are a curvature estimate and a Gauss--Bonnet formula for the $S^1$ connection obtained by taking the average of the flat connection with respect to a harmonic measure. As consequences, we give a precise description of the harmonic measure on suspension foliations with maximal Euler number and an alternative proof of rigidity theorems of Matsumoto and Burger--Iozzi--Wienhard.

Abstract:Given an $S^1$-manifold with isolated fixed points, some recent papers are concerned with the relationship between the least number of fixed points and the characteristic numbers of this manifold, and their proofs have some similar features. The main purpose of this short survey article is, by using the language of equivariant cohomology, to present a unified method to deal with such problems, of which the related known results are direct corollaries.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a regular curve and $n$ be a positive integer such that for every nonempty open set $U\subset X$, there is a nonempty connected open set $V\subset U$ with the cardinality $|\partial_X(V)|\leq n$. We show that if $X$ admits a sensitive action of a group $G$, then $G$ contains a free subsemigroup and the action has positive geometric entropy. As a corollary, $X$ admits no sensitive nilpotent group action.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.
