Abstract:We establish an S1-equivariant index theorem for Dirac operators on Z/k-manifolds. Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an $S^1$-equivariant index theorem for Spin$^c$ Dirac operators on $\mathbb{Z}/k$ manifolds, then combining with the methods developed by Taubes \cite{MR998662} and Liu-Ma-Zhang \cite{MR1870666,MR2016198}, we extend Witten's rigidity theorem to the case of $\mathbb{Z}/k$ Spin$^c$ manifolds. Among others, our results resolve a conjecture of Devoto \cite{MR1405063}

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Abstract:We prove several rigidity theorems for elliptic genera associated to Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional spin manifolds. We also prove an equivariant odd index theorem for Dirac operators with involution parity and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch vanishing theorems for odd dimensional spin manifolds.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for pairs of integers to arise as the weights at the fixed points of an effective circle action on a compact almost complex 4-manifold with a discrete fixed point set. As an application, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a pair of integers to arise as the Chern numbers of such an action, answering negatively a question by Sabatini whether $c_1^2[M] \leq 3 c_2[M]$ holds for any such manifold $M$. We achieve this by demonstrating that pairs of integers that arise as weights of a circle action, also arise as weights of a restriction of a $\mathbb{T}^2$-action. Furthermore, we discuss applications to circle actions on complex/symplectic 4-manifolds and semi-free circle actions with discrete fixed point sets.

Abstract:In the present paper, we consider an action of the circle group on a compact oriented 4-manifold. We derive the Atiyah-Hirzebruch formula for the manifold, and associate a graph in terms of data on the fixed point set. We show in the case of isolated fixed points that if an abstract graph satisfies the Atiyah-Hirzebruch formula, then there exists a corresponding 4-dimensional oriented $S^1$-manifold.

Abstract:Given an $S^1$-manifold with isolated fixed points, some recent papers are concerned with the relationship between the least number of fixed points and the characteristic numbers of this manifold, and their proofs have some similar features. The main purpose of this short survey article is, by using the language of equivariant cohomology, to present a unified method to deal with such problems, of which the related known results are direct corollaries.

Abstract:Let the circle group act on a 6-dimensional compact oriented manifold $M$ with isolated fixed points. The fixed point data of $M$ is the collection of signs and weights at the fixed points. To classify such a manifold $M$, the fixed point data is an essential information. Under an assumption that each isotropy submanifold is orientable, we classify the fixed point data of $M$, by showing that we can convert it to the empty collection by performing a combination of a number of types of operations. We do so by proving that we can successively take equivariant connected sums of $M$ at fixed points with $S^6$, $\mathbb{CP}^3$, and 6-dimensional analogue $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ of the Hirzebruch surfaces (and these with opposite orientations), to a fixed point free action on a compact oriented 6-manifold.

Abstract:Kennard, Khalili Samani, and Searle showed that for a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus acting on a closed, positively curved Riemannian $n$-manifold, $M^{n}$, with a non-empty fixed point set for $n$ large enough and $r$ approximately half the dimension of $M$, then $M^n$ is homotopy equivalent to $S^n$, $\mathbb{R}\mathrm{P}^{n}$, $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, or a lens space. In this paper, we lower $r$ to approximately $2n/5$ and show that we still obtain the same result.

Abstract:We formulate and prove an index theorem for loop spaces of compact manifolds in the framework of KK -theory. It is a strong candidate for the noncommutative geometrical definition (or the analytic counterpart) of the Witten genus. In order to specify an "appropriate form" of the index theorem to formulate a loop space version, we formulate and prove an equivariant index theorem for non-compact S1 -manifolds with a compact fixed-point set. In order to formulate it, we use a ring of formal power series.

Abstract:Let the circle group act on a compact oriented manifold $M$ with a non-empty discrete fixed point set. Then the dimension of $M$ is even. If $M$ has one fixed point, $M$ is the point. In any even dimension, such a manifold $M$ with two fixed points exists, a rotation of an even dimensional sphere. Suppose that $M$ has three fixed points. Then the dimension of $M$ is a multiple of 4. Under the assumption that each isotropy submanifold is orientable, we show that if $\dim M=8$, then the weights at the fixed points agree with those of an action on the quaternionic projective space $\mathbb{HP}^2$, and show that there is no such 12-dimensional manifold $M$.

Abstract:In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhang. We use the index to define a notion of K-homological Dirac induction, and show that, under conditions, it satisfies the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete finitely generated group. Let $\hat{M}\to T$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant fibration, with fibers diffeomorphic to a fixed even dimensional manifold with boundary $Z$. We assume that $\Gamma\to \hat{M}\to \hat{M}/\Gamma$ is a Galois covering of a compact manifold with boundary. Let $(D^+ (\theta))_{\theta\in T}$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant family of Dirac-type operators. Under the assumption that the boundary family is $L^2$-invertible, we define an index class in the K-theory of the cross-product algebra, $K_0 (C^0 (T)\rtimes_r \Gamma)$. If, in addition, $\Gamma$ is of polynomial growth, we define higher indeces by pairing the index class with suitable cyclic cocycles. Our main result is then a formula for these higher indeces: the structure of the formula is as in the seminal work of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with an interior geometric contribution and a boundary contribution in the form of a higher eta invariant associated to the boundary family. Under similar assumptions we extend our theorem to any $G$-proper manifold, with $G$ an étale groupoid. We employ this generalization in order to establish a higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index formula on certain foliations with boundary. Fundamental to our work is a suitable generalization of Melrose $b$-pseudodifferential calculus as well as the superconnection proof of the index theorem on $G$-proper manifolds recently given by Gorokhovsky and Lott.
