Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:Let $G$ be connected nilpotent Lie group acting locally on a real surface $M$. Let $\varphi$ be the local flow on $M$ induced by a $1$-parameter subgroup. Assume $K$ is a compact set of fixed points of $\varphi$ and $U$ is a neighborhood of $K$ containing no other fixed points. Theorem: If the Dold fixed-point index of $\varphi_t|U$ is nonzero for sufficiently small $t>0$, then ${\rm Fix} (G) \cap K \ne \emptyset$.

Fixed points of Lie group actions on moduli spaces: A tale of two actions

Abstract:In this paper, we examine Lie group actions on moduli spaces (sets themselves built as quotients by group actions) and their fixed points. We show that when the Lie group is compact and connected, we obtain a linear constraint. This constraint makes the problem of finding fixed points one of representation theory, greatly simplifying the search for such points. We obtain a similar result when the Lie group is one-dimensional. For compact and disconnected Lie groups, we show that we need only additionally check a finite number of points. Finally, we show that the subgroup fixing an equivalence class in the moduli space is a compact Lie subgroup.

Abstract:A group of bijections G acting on a set X is said with fixed points (abbreviated as gaf from the french "groupe {\`a} points fixes") if any element of G has at least one fixed point in X. The G group is said with a common fixed point (abbreviated as gag for "groupe {\`a} point fixe global") if there is x $\in$ X fixed by all elements of G. The group G is said fixating if any subgroup of G which is a gaf is automatically a gag. The article explores which groups are fixating. The situation depends on the assumptions made on the group of bijections and on the support set X. For example the group of isometries of the Euclidean space R n is fixating for n 3 but not for n 4. The case of isometries of elliptic and hyperbolic spaces is also considered, as well as that of isometries of some discrete sets. As we will see, the situation depends upon the fact whether the so-called median inequality is satisfied in the ambient space or not. Besides, some of our constructions of nonfixating groups rely on the existence of free subgroups of certain linear groups.

Abstract:We describe a group theoretic condition which ensures that any cellular action of a group satisfying this condition on a CAT(0) cube complex has a global fixed point. In particular, we show that this fixed point criterion is satisfied by the automorphism group of a free group of rank n. For the unique subgroup of index two in the automorphism group of a free group, we obtain a similar result.

Abstract:In the setting of finite groups, suppose $J$ acts on $N$ via automorphisms so that the induced semidirect product $N\rtimes J$ acts on some non-empty set $\Omega$, with $N$ acting transitively. Glauberman proved that if the orders of $J$ and $N$ are coprime, then $J$ fixes a point in $\Omega$. We consider the non-coprime case and show that if $N$ is abelian and a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $J$ fixes a point in $\Omega$ for each prime $p$, then $J$ fixes a point in $\Omega$. We also show that if $N$ is nilpotent, $N\rtimes J$ is supersoluble, and a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $J$ fixes a point in $\Omega$ for each prime $p$, then $J$ fixes a point in $\Omega$.

Abstract:We show that finitely generated groups which are Liouville and without infinite finite-dimensional linear representations must have a global fixed point whenever they act by isometry on a finite-dimensional complete CAT(0)-space. This provides a partial answer to an old question in geometric group theory and proves partly a conjecture formulated by Norin, Osajda, and Przytycki. It applies in particular to Grigorchuk's groups of intermediate growth and other branch groups as well as to simple groups with the Liouville property such as those found by Matte Bon and by Nekrashevych. The method of proof uses ultralimits, equivariant harmonic maps, subharmonic functions, horofunctions and random walks.

Abstract:We show that if X is a complete metric space with uniform relative normal structure and G is a subgroup of the isometry group of X with bounded orbits, then there is a point in X fixed by every isometry in G . As a corollary, we obtain a theorem of U. Lang (2013) concerning injective metric spaces. A few applications of this theorem are given to the problems of inner derivations. In particular, we show that if L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( őľ ) is an essential Banach L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) -bimodule, then any continuous derivation őī : L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) ‚Üí L ‚ąě ‚ĀĘ ( őľ ) is inner. This extends a theorem of B.‚ÄČE. Johnson (1991) asserting that the convolution algebra L 1 ‚ĀĘ ( G ) is weakly amenable if G is a locally compact group.

Abstract:The fixed-point spectrum of a locally compact second countable group G on lp is defined to be the set of real numbers p such that every action by affine isometries of G on lp admits a fixed-point. We show that this set is either empty, or is equal to a set of one of the following forms : [1,\pc[, [1,\pc[\{2} for some \pc<\infty or \pc=\infty, or [1,\pc], [1,\pc]\{2} for some pc<infty. This answers a question closely related to a conjecture of C. Drutu which asserts that the fixed-point spectrum is connected for isometric actions on Lp(0,1). We also study the topological properties of the fixed-point spectrum on Lp(X,\mu) for general measure spaces (X,\mu), and show partial results toward the conjecture for actions on Lp(0,1). In particular, we prove that the spectrum F_{L^{\infty}(X,\mu)(G,\pi) of actions with linear part \pi is either empty, or an interval of the form [1,\pc] or [1,\infty[, whenever \pi is an orthogonal representation associated to a measure-preserving ergodic action on a finite measure space (X,\mu).

Abstract Group Automorphisms of Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups and Partial Automatic Continuity

Abstract:Any abstract (not necessarily continuous) group automorphism of a simple, compact Lie group must be continuous due to Cartan (1930) and van der Waerden (1933). The purpose of this paper is to study a similar question in nilpotent Lie groups. For many simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, we show any abstract group automorphism is continuous "up to discontinuity due to the center and field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$." Such groups include (1) a generic simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group of type $(p,q)$ with $p$ large, (2) all twelve simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups of dimensions 6 or less except for one example, and (3) Iwasawa N-groups of simple Lie groups of rank 1, i.e., "Heisenberg groups". To our knowledge, the exception in (2) is the first nilpotent Lie group whose automorphism group is not of the type described above. In the proof for (3), we use tools from Riemannian geometry, even though the result is purely algebraic. All of the three cases are derived from one key result that gives a sufficient condition for the automorphism group to be of the type described above.

Abstract:Consider a smooth action G×M→M of a compact connected Lie group G on a connected manifold M . Assume the existence of a point of M whose isotropy group has a single element (a free point). Then we prove that there exist two complete vector field X,X1 such that their group of automorphisms equals G regarded as a group of diffeomorphisms of M (the existence of a free point implies that the action of G is effective). Moreover, some examples of effective actions with no free point where this result fails are exhibited.

In the present work we analyze the problem for different graphs that one can associate with a finite group, both reporting on existing answers and contributing to new ones.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a semisimple, simply connected, algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ with Lie algebra $\frak g$. We study the spaces of parahoric subalgebras of a given type containing a fixed nil-elliptic element of $\frak g\otimes k((\pi))$, i.e. fixed point varieties on affine flag manifolds. We define a natural class of $k^*$-actions on affine flag manifolds, generalizing actions introduced by Lusztig and Smelt. We formulate a condition on a pair $(N,f)$ consisting of $N\in\frak{g}\otimes k((\pi))$ and a $k^*$-action $f$ of the specified type which guarantees that $f$ induces an action on the variety of parahoric subalgebras containing $N$. For the special linear and symplectic groups, we characterize all regular semisimple and nil-elliptic conjugacy classes containing a representative whose fixed point variety admits such an action. We then use these actions to find simple formulas for the Euler characteristics of those varieties for which the $k^*$-fixed points are finite. We also obtain a combinatorial description of the Euler characteristics of the spaces of parabolic subalgebras containing a given element of certain nilpotent conjugacy classes of $\frak g$.

Abstract:Geometric properties of the fixed point set $Fix(f)$ of a self-mapping $f$ on a metric or a generalized metric space is an attractive issue. The set $Fix(f)$ can contain a geometric figure (a circle, an ellipse, etc.) or it can be a geometric figure. In this paper, we consider the set of simulation functions for geometric applications in the fixed point theory both on metric and some generalized metric spaces ($S$-metric spaces and $b$-metric spaces). The main motivation of this paper is to investigate the geometric properties of non unique fixed points of self-mappings via simulation functions.

Abstract:In a series of previous papers, we initiated a systematic study of semihypergroups and had a thorough discussion on certain analytic and algebraic aspects associated to this class of objects. In particular, we introduced the notion of semihypergroup actions on a general topological space and discussed different continuity, equivalence and natural fixed point properties of the same in [6]. Now in this article, we consider different kinds of representations of a semihypergroup on compact convex subsets of a locally convex space and explore equivalence relations between certain fixed-point properties of such representations and amenability of the space of almost periodic functions. Finally, we investigate how far these equivalence relations can be strengthened when in particular, we consider representations on the dual of a Banach space.

Abstract:For a circle action on a compact almost complex manifold with a fixed point, the lower bound on the number of fixed points is known in dimension up to 12 except 10. In this paper, we show that if the circle group acts on a 10-dimensional compact almost complex manifold with a fixed point, then there are at least 6 fixed points. This minimum is attained by $\mathbb{CP}^5$ and $S^6 \times \mathbb{CP}^2$. We establish this lower bound by showing that there does not exist a circle action on a 10-dimensional compact almost complex manifold with 4 fixed points.
