Abstract:Formic acid (or formate) is suggested to be one of the most economically viable products from electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. However, its commercial viability hinges on the development of highly active and selective electrocatalysts. Here we report that structural defects have a profound positive impact on the electrocatalytic performance of bismuth. Bismuth oxide double-walled nanotubes with fragmented surface are prepared as a template, and are cathodically converted to defective bismuth nanotubes. This converted electrocatalyst enables carbon dioxide reduction to formate with excellent activity, selectivity and stability. Most significantly, its current density reaches ~288 mA cm−2 at −0.61 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode within a flow cell reactor under ambient conditions. Using density functional theory calculations, the excellent activity and selectivity are rationalized as the outcome of abundant defective bismuth sites that stabilize the *OCHO intermediate. Furthermore, this electrocatalyst is coupled with silicon photocathodes and achieves high-performance photoelectrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Synchronous Coupling of Defects and a Heteroatom-Doped Carbon Constraint Layer on Cobalt Sulfides Toward Boosted Oxide Electrolysis Activities for Highly Energy-Efficient Micro-Zinc-air Batteries

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen electrocatalysis reactions on cathodes significantly suppresses the energy efficiency of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, by coupling in situ generated CoS nanoparticles rich in cobalt vacancies (VCo) with a dual-heteroatom-doped layered carbon framework, a hybrid Co-based catalyst (Co1-xS@N/S-C) is designed and synthesized from Co-MOF precursor. Experimental analyses, together with density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, demonstrate that the facilitated ion diffusion enabled by the introduced VCo, together with the enhanced electron transport benefiting from the well-designed dual-heteroatom-doped laminated carbon framework, synergistically boost the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of Co1-xS@N/S-C (ΔE = 0.76 V), which is much superior to that of CoS@N/S-C without VCo (ΔE = 0.89 V), CoS without VCo (ΔE = 1.23 V), and the dual-heteroatom-doped laminated carbon framework. As expected, the further assembled ZAB employing Co1-xS@N/S-C as the cathode electrocatalyst exhibits enhanced energy efficiency in terms of better cycling stability (510 cycles/170 hours) and a higher specific capacity (807 mA h g-1). Finally, a flexible/stretched solid state micro-ZAB (F/SmZAB) with Co1-xS@N/S-C as the cathode electrocatalyst and a wave-shaped GaIn-Ni-based liquid metal as the electronic circuit is further designed, which can display excellent electrical properties and long elongation. This work provides a new defect and structure coupling strategy for boosting the oxide electrolysis activities of Co-based catalysts. Furthermore, F/SmZAB represents a promising solution for a compatible micropower source in wearable microelectronics.

High current CO2 reduction realized by edge/defect-rich bismuth nanosheets

Abstract:CO2 electroreduction has been regarded as an appealing strategy for renewable energy storage. Recently, bismuth (Bi) electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their excellent formate selectivity. However, many reported Bi electrocatalysts suffer from low current densities, which are insufficient for industrial applications. To reach the goal of high current CO2 reduction to formate, we fabricate Bi nanosheets (NS) with high activity through edge/terrace control and defect engineering strategy. Bi NS with preferential exposure sites are obtained by topotactic transformation, and the processes are clearly monitored by in-situ Raman and ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Bi NS-1 with a high fraction of edge sites and defect sites exhibits excellent performance, and the current density is up to ca. 870 mA·cm−2 in the flow cell, far above the industrially applicable level (100 mA·cm−2), with a formate Faradaic efficiency greater than 90%. In-situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra detect *OCHO, and theoretical calculations reveal that the formation energy of *OCHO on edges is lower than that on terraces, while the defects on edges further reduce the free energy changes (ΔG). The differential charge density spatial distributions reveal that the presence of defects on edges causes charge enrichment around the C-H bond, benefiting the stabilization of the *OCHO intermediate, thus remarkably lowering the ΔG.

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi)-based nanomaterials are highly efficient electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR), which still have huge scope for synthesis optimization and performance improvement. In this work, we develop a fast ultrasound-assisted galvani replacement reaction to synthesize two-dimensional metallic Bi metallene (Bi ML) with an ultrathin thickness of 1.5 nm, high surface area, and abundant atomic defects. The electrochemical characterization shows that Bi ML can achieve a faradaic efficiency of ∼94% for the CO2RR to formate, accompanied by good stability. Density functional theory calculations show that the atomic vacancy can change the electronic structure of the surrounding atoms, which contributes to the selectivity enhancement of the CO2RR for formate production. This work provides an efficient method for the rapid large-scale preparation of high-performance Bibased two-dimensional nanomaterials for the CO2RR.

Abstract:Bismuth-based materials have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO(2)RR) 2 RR) to HCOOH. However, it remains challenges to meet the practical application requirements and identify the active sites of bismuth-based catalysts in eCO(2)RR. Herein, bismuthate (MBi2O4, M = Ca, Cu, Zn) derived nanosheet-like electrocatalysts with metal-modified edge defects are developed. During electrochemical processes, MBi2O4 pre-catalyst undergoes surface reconstruction to expose more active Bi0 0 sites and to form abundant metal-modified edge defects, which facilitate the modulation of charge state of adjacent Bi sites and improve the adsorption of *OCHO intermediate, thereby enhancing the selectivity of eCO2RR 2 RR towards HCOOH. The Ca-modified defect-rich Bi catalyst exhibits a maximum HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of 94.3 % at an industrially relevant current density of 400 mA cm(-2) , together with high stability/reproducibility of 55 h. This work proposes a new strategy for construction of Bi-based catalysts and explores its structural reconstruction mechanism during the electrocatalytic process, opening a new window for design of eCO(2)RR 2 RR catalysts.

Abstract:The high‐efficiency N⊂CoTe1‐x/ZnTe1‐y@NC electrocatalyst is rationally designed for Li–S batteries. Both experimental and theoretical results substantiate that the integration of dense heterointerfaces and rich defects (Te vacancy‐induced N‐doping) can synergistically accelerate the sulfur conversion and protect the lithium anode from corrosion. This study provides an innovative strategy for constructing high‐performance sulfur electrocatalysts with transition metal tellurides. Rechargeable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have received ever‐increasing attention owing to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their practical application is critically plagued by the sluggish reaction kinetics, shuttling of soluble polysulfide intermediates, and uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites. Herein, a bimetallic telluride electrocatalyst with dense heterointerfaces and rich defects embedded in hollow carbon polyhedron bunches (N⊂CoTe1‐x/ZnTe1‐y@NC, abbreviated as NCZTC) is rationally designed to simultaneously address the S cathode and Li anode problems. Both experimental and computational results substitute the integration of dense heterointerfaces and rich defects can synergistically modulate the electronic structure, enhance the electrical conductivity, promote the Li+ transportation, strengthen the polysulfides adsorption and improve the catalytic activity, thereby significantly accelerating the redox conversion kinetics and prevent the dendrite growth. Consequently, Li–S batteries with NCZTC‐modified separators demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance including high specific discharge capacity, remarkable rate capability, good long‐term cycling stability, and competitive areal capacity even at high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte conditions. This study not only provides valuable guidance for designing efficient sulfur electrocatalysts with transition metal tellurides but also emphasizes the importance of heterostructure design and defect engineering for high‐performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemical products has become a dramatic research area because of the efficient exploitation of carbon resources and simultaneous reduction of atmospheric CO2 concentration. Herein, we report the bismuth-based catalyst in the efficient electroconversion of CO2 for the formation of formate with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 91% and partial current density of ∼8 mA cm–2 at −0.9 V vs RHE. Experimental and theoretical results show that the bismuth–oxygen structure of bismuth oxides is beneficial for a higher adsorption of CO2 and the rate-determining route switching from the initial fast pre-equilibrium of electron transfer process to the subsequent hydrogenation step, accompanied by a lower free energy of intermediate. This work may offer valuable insights into crystal structure engineering to achieve efficient electrocatalysts for selective CO2 reduction toward generation of valuable products.

Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) with maximum atom‐utilization efficiency and distinctive properties are emerging as a new frontier in the field of catalysis. Herein, a new strategy for synthesizing stable Co single atoms with content of about 1.52 wt% on defective bimodal mesoporous carbon materials (A‐Co@CMK‐3‐D) is reported. The dispersion and coordination structures of atomic Co species at carbon defect sites are confirmed by both aberration‐corrected high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (AC‐HRTEM) and X‐ray absorption spectrometry, respectively. The obtained catalyst exhibits efficient electrochemical performance on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an alkaline electrolyte with a half‐wave potential (0.835 V vs RHE), which is comparable to that of Pt/C (0.839 V vs RHE). Furthermore, the Zn–air batteries (ZABs) fabricated by this electrocatalyst display a superior discharging and charging performance with long‐term durability. This work provides a new approach on optimizing SAC‐based carbon materials from multiscale principles (simultaneous regulation of electronic structure and hierarchical morphology) to boost ORR reactivity. Atomic Co‐doped hierarchical mesoporous carbon as an efficient and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst is successfully fabricated via defect engineering. The obtained catalyst exhibits Pt comparable activity for ORR, and the assembled Zn–air battery shows excellent discharge capacity and cycling stability. This work may guide the design of single‐atom catalysts under multiscale regulation, including electronic modulation, metal‐defect coordination, and morphological characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to formate is economically attractive but improving the reaction selectivity and activity remains challenging. Herein, we introduce boron (B) atoms to modify the local electronic structure of bismuth with positive valence sites for boosting conversion of CO 2 into formate with high activity and selectivity in a wide potential window. By combining experimental and computational investigations, our study indicates that B dopant differentiates the proton participations of rate-determining steps in CO 2 reduction and in the competing hydrogen evolution. By comparing the experimental observations with the density functional theory, the dominant mechanistic pathway of B promoted formate generation and the B concentration modulated effects on the catalytic property of Bi are unravelled. This comprehensive study offers deep mechanistic insights into the reaction pathway at an atomic and molecular level and provides an effective strategy for the rational design of highly active and selective electrocatalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Zn-CO2 batteries are excellent candidates for both electrical energy output and CO2 utilization, whereas the main challenge is to design electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions with high selectivity and low cost. Herein, the three-phase heterojunction Cu-based electrocatalyst (Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15) is synthesized and evaluated for highly selective CO2 reduction to CO, which shows the highest faradaic efficiency of 96.3% at -1.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, exceeding the previously reported best values for Cu-based materials. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical analysis indicate that the Sb incorporation into the three-phase heterojunction Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15 nanomaterial promotes the formation of key *COOH intermediates compared with the normal Cu/Cu2O composites. Furthermore, the rechargeable aqueous Zn-CO2 battery assembled with Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15 as the cathode harvests a peak power density of 3.01 mW cm-2 as well as outstanding cycling stability of 417 cycles. This research provides fresh perspectives for designing advanced cathodic electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-CO2 batteries with high-efficient electricity output together with CO2 utilization.
Regulating the Electronic Structure of Bismuth Nanosheets by Titanium Doping to Boost CO2 Electroreduction and Zn–CO2 Batteries

Abstract:In this work, the ultrathin nanosheet structure of titanium‐doped bismuth nanosheets (TiBi NSs) can accelerate mass transfer, while the electron‐rich properties can accelerate the production of *CO2− and enhance the adsorption strength of *OCHO intermediate. TiBi NSs can achieve high selectivity and high current density for CO2 electroreduction to produce formate and also facilitate the development of Zn–CO2 batteries. The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (E‐CO2RR) to formate is a promising strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the global energy crisis. Developing low‐cost and environmentally friendly electrocatalysts with high selectivity and industrial current densities for formate production is an ideal but challenging goal in the field of electrocatalysis. Herein, novel titanium‐doped bismuth nanosheets (TiBi NSs) with enhanced E‐CO2RR performance are synthesized through one‐step electrochemical reduction of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12). We comprehensively evaluated TiBi NSs using in situ Raman spectra, finite element method, and density functional theory. The results indicate that the ultrathin nanosheet structure of TiBi NSs can accelerate mass transfer, while the electron‐rich properties can accelerate the production of *CO2− and enhance the adsorption strength of *OCHO intermediate. The TiBi NSs deliver a high formate Faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of 96.3% and a formate production rate of 4032 μmol h−1 cm−2 at −1.01 V versus RHE. An ultra‐high current density of −338.3 mA cm−2 is achieved at −1.25 versus RHE, and simultaneously FEformate still reaches more than 90%. Furthermore, the rechargeable Zn–CO2 battery using TiBi NSs as a cathode catalyst achieves a maximum power density of 1.05 mW cm−2 and excellent charging/discharging stability of 27 h.

Abstract:Defect-engineering in transition-metal-doped carbon-based catalyst plays an essential role for improving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Herein, we report a ball-milling induced defect assisted with ZnCl2 strategy for fabricating defect-rich iron/nitrogen co-doped graphene-based materials (Fe-N-G). The substantial mechanical shear forces and the constant corrosion to the carbon matrix by ZnCl2 lead to the creation of abundant defects in graphene-based materials, which facilitates doping for heteroatoms. The defect-rich Fe-N-G catalyst with abundant Fe-Nx active sites displays excellent ORR performance. For OER, the over potential for Fe-N-G outperforms that of RuO2 in 1 M KOH at 10 mA cm−2. The Density Functional Theory calculations unravel that the impressive OER performance is attributable to the introduction of abundant defects. Additionally, the liquid and all-solid-state zinc-air batteries equipped with the prepared material as the air cathode demonstrate high power density, high specific capacity, and long charge–discharge stability. This work offers a practical method for manufacturing high-performance electrocatalysts for environmental and energy-related fields.

Transition metal oxide nanocatalysts are expected to help address the above issue, but their low conductivity and cumbersome synthesis process limit their application. Here, we propose a defect engineering strategy to induce electron rearrangement by heteroatom doping. Boron-doped spinel-type oxide (B-ZnCo2O4‑x) is synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method for separator modification. The boron-produced oxygen vacancy (OV) increases unsaturated sites by changing the electron cloud density, and therefore, the B-ZnCo2O4‑x nanocatalyst can reduce the reaction energy barrier and accelerate the nucleation and activation rate of Li2S. Meanwhile, the unique pore defects effectively increase the Li+ flux and ensure battery performance at a high rate and high sulfur loading. The battery equipped with a B-ZnCo2O4‑x-modified separator delivered an initial specific capacity of 1108 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C and a capacity retention rate of 80.4% at 0.5 C after 200 cycles. In particular, at a high sulfur loading of 10.0 mg cm–2, the battery yielded a first-cycle capacity of 1321.9 mAh g–1. This work demonstrates that boron-doping-enabled defect engineering is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity of transition metal oxides for application in Li–S batteries.

Ultrathin Bismuth Nanosheets as a Highly Efficient CO2 Reduction Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to value-added products is an important and challenging reaction for sustainable energy study. Herein, bismuth nanosheets with thickness of around 10 nm were prepared through the electrochemical reduction of Bi3+ . Ultrathin Bi nanosheets with numerous low-coordination sites can efficiently reduce CO2 to formate in aqueous solution. Within the potential range of -0.9 to -1.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), the faradaic efficiency of formate is over 90 %, outperforming many Bi catalysts. At -0.7 V, the Bi nanosheets exhibit much higher current for formate generation than that of bulk Bi, attributed to a high surface area and also modified intrinsic electronic properties brought about by the ultrathin structure. DFT calculations demonstrate that Bi nanosheets have much higher density of states at the Fermi level compared to bulk Bi, favoring improved CO2 reduction on Bi nanosheets. At -1.0 V, Bi nanosheets exhibit high selectivity for formate and excellent stability during 5 h of electrolysis.
Steering Geometric Reconstruction of Bismuth with Accelerated Dynamics for CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:Bismuth-based materials have emerged as promising catalysts in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate. However, the reasons for the reconstruction of Bi-based precursors to form bismuth nanosheets are still puzzling, especially the formation of defective bismuth sites. Herein, we prepare bismuth nanosheets with vacancy-rich defects (V-Bi NS) by rapidly reconstructing Bi19Cl3S27 under negative potential. Theoretical analysis reveals that the introduction of chlorine induces the generation of intrinsic electric field in the precursor, thereby increasing the electron transfer rate and further promoting the metallization of trivalent bismuth. Meanwhile, in situ Raman and ex situ XRD tests verify that Bi19Cl3S27 has a faster reconstruction rate than Bi2S3. The formed V-Bi NS exhibits up to 96% HCOO- Faraday efficiency and 400 mA cm-2 HCOO- partial current densities, and its ECSA normalized formate current density and yield are 2.2 times higher than those of intact bismuth nanosheets (I-Bi NS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that bismuth vacancies with electron-rich aggregation reduce the activation energy of CO2 to *CO2- radicals and stabilize the adsorption of the key intermediate *OCHO, thus facilitating the reaction kinetics of formate production.
