Abstract:AbstractThe high-catalytic bifunctional Co nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in N- and S-codoped carbon (Co@NSC) with precisely regulated electronic structure due to sulfur dopant were simply and successfully synthesized to facilitate intrinsically sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR and OER). The Co@NSC electrocatalysts with relatively high defected structure display high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.858 V, low OER overpotential (ηOER) of 339 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and excellent stability originating from core–shell structure, exceeding the performance reported in most literatures. Expectedly, the assembled zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with Co@NSC as cathode catalysts show high power density (141 mW cm−2), low charge–discharge voltage gap and superior cycle reversibility. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculation verifies S dopant can tailor charge density and p-band center. More importantly, the ORR and OER overpotential (ηORR and ηOER) of Co@NSC is greatly reduced via DFT calculation. Consequently, the strengthened bifunctional catalytic activity originates from the redistribution of charge density and more positive p-band center via S dopant. This investigation provides an experimental and theoretical guidance for designing and synthesizing high-active transition metal-containing heteroatoms-doped carbon electrocatalysts.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Accelerating the sluggish anode reaction in a Zn–air battery can improve its energy efficiency, but the large-scale development of this battery is hindered by the lack of bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we designed a one-step carbonization strategy for synthesizing monodispersed Co nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotube (Co/CNT), which shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with long-term durability for oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction. The formation of carbon substrates from the carbonization of nitrogenous organic molecules are benefit to capture more Co nanoparticles though strong metal–substrate interaction, then construct high-density effective active sites of the Lewis base for accelerating the electrocatalytic reaction process. To verify its superior performance, a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a Co/CNT air electrode was subsequently constructed. The battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a specific discharge capacity of 835.2 mAh/gZn, which can be continuously charged and discharged with good cycle stability. Our study provides a new strategy for developing various practical carbon-based non-noble metallic bifunctional electrocatalysts with promising performance in electrocatalysis and batteries to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Construction of high-efficiency, low cost and stable non-noble metal catalyst on air cathode is of great importance for design and assembly of rechargeable Zn-air battery. Eriochrome black T (EBT) has phenolic hydroxyl and -N=Ν- groups, which provides multiple coordination sites for metal ions. Herein, Co9S8 nanoclusters implanted in Co/Mn-S,N multi-doped porous carbon (Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC) are fabricated with the mixture (i.e. EBT, metal precursors and dicyandiamide) by a coordination regulated pyrolysis strategy. Specifically, EBT effectively chelates with the Co and Mn ions, resulting in multiple incorporation and fine modulation of the carbon electronic structures. Meanwhile, its sulfonic acid groups are reduced at such high temperature, accompanied by simultaneously embedding S element in the carbon, ultimately in situ forming Co9S8 nanoclusters. The Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC performs as an effective bifunctional oxygen catalyst, displaying a positive half-wave potential of 0.85 V and a large limiting current density of 5.89 mA cm-2 for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, coupled with a small overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm-2 towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER), outperforming commercial Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery with Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC exhibits the much better charge/discharge performance and long-term durability (210 h, 630 cycles). This research opens an instructive avenue to develop high-efficient and stable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts in energy transformation and storage devices.

Abstract:To achieve broad commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries, the development of non-precious metal-based bi-functional oxygen electrocatalysts is critical. In this study, we prepared N,S co-doped porous carbon materials containing Co9S8 nanoparticles (Co9S8/NSC) through a one-step pyrolysis process. The process involved the pyrolysis of polydopamine (PDA) coated Co-formic acid framework (Co-FF) derived Co3O4 and thiourea. The improved catalyst Co9S8/NSC-1 exhibited satisfactory long-term durability and superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, the half-wave potential (E1/2) of ORR reached 0.83 V, and the OER overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) was 300 mV. The zinc−air battery (ZAB) based on Co9S8/NSC-1 assembly had a maximum power density of 102.0 mW cm−2 and the cycle life has reached 500 cycles. The material preparation method was simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive, providing a feasible strategy for the development of non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts (SACs) with unique structure gain much interest in the field of electrocatalysis and show a broad application prospect in long-life rechargeable Zn-air batteries. However, ingenious design and preparation of bi-metal SACs is still difficult to further enhance the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity. Herein, modified zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (SiO2@Fe-ZIF-8/67) was facilely designed to preparation atomically dispersed Fe and Co doping 3D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (). The Fe or Co single atoms are identified to be coordinated with N atoms and form FeN4, CoN4 or N3Fe-CoN3 anchored on 3D defect carbon, which act as reactive sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Through synergetic coupling effect, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with ORR/OER potential gap of 0.80 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate the synergistic effect between Fe and Co in towards the enhancing ORR activity. The as-prepared catalyst assembled Zn-air battery shows a maximum power density, and superb cycling stability, surpassing that based on commercial Pt/C+IrO2. Results from this study may provide a facile method for precious control of dual-metal single sites doped carbon with highly activity and durability for bifunctional electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Interface modification is an effective and promising route for developing functional electrocatalysts. However, researchers have not created a reliable method to optimize the interfaces of components existing in electrocatalysts, although it is very crucial for the technological development of high-performance electrodes. Here, we develop a strategy aiming at the in situ anchorage of Co9S8 nanoparticles into a nitrogen (N), sulfur (S) co-implanted three-dimensional carbon matrix (Co9S8@NSCM) as a highly active and durable nonprecious metal electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium. This strategy offers an opportunity to optimize the interface interaction and affords high activity for the ORR and OER in terms of low overpotentials and high current intensities. In addition, by confining Co9S8 nanoparticles into a N,S-doped carbon matrix, corrosion and aggregation can be effectively prevented, and thus the catalyst exhibits nearly unfading ORR catalytic performance after 100 000 s testing, a low discharge-charge voltage gap (0.81 V) and a long cycle life (up to 840 cycles) in Zn-air batteries. The present work highlights potentially powerful interface engineering for designing multi-component heterostructures with advanced performances in oxygen electrochemistry and related energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts with remarkable catalytic activity and long-cycling lifespan toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction (OER) is especially important for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, monodispersed Co9S8 nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous hollow carbon spheres (Co9S8 NPs/NHCS) are synthesized through a template-assisted strategy followed by a co-assembly, thermal annealing, and sulfurization process. Benefiting from larger specific surface area, hierarchically porous hollow structure, and carbon nanotubes self-growth, the obtained Co9S8 NPs/NHCS-0.5 electrocatalyst exhibits decent performance for ORR (E-1/2=0.85 V) and OER (E-10=1.55 V). A rechargeable ZAB assembled using the Co9S8 NPs/NHCS-0.5 as air cathode delivers a maximum power density of 116 mW cm(-2), high open circuit voltage of 1.47 V, and good durability (no obvious voltage decay after 1200 cycles (200 hours)). Such a hierarchically porous hollow structure of Co9S8 NPs/NHCS-0.5 provides a confined space shell and an interconnected hollow core to achieve outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity and cycling stability, which surpass the benchmark Pt/C-RuO2.

Abstract:Developing transition-metal based bifunctional electrocatalysts to efficiently drive oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction is an urgent demand for the implementation of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Transition-metal sulfides are emerging as alternatives to precious metal-based electrocatalysts, however, their bifunctional activities are usually restricted by inferior electrical conductivities and limited electrochemical active sites. Herein, we highlight a novel metal-organic frameworks derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber coupled FeS2–CoS2 (FeS2–CoS2/NCFs) by a combination of electrospinning and atomic-layer-deposition approach. Benefiting from the large exposed surface active sites of hierarchical structure and the abundant interfacial vacancies in FeS2–CoS2 heterointerface, the FeS2–CoS2/NCFs integrated electrocatalyst delivers a high bifunctional activity together with a good durability in alkaline medium. Notably, the liquid Zn-air battery assembled with this FeS2–CoS2/NCFs electrode displays a considerable peak power density of 257 mW cm−2, a high specific capacity of 814 mA h g−1 and a long cycling life of 250 h, superior to precious metal based Zn-air batteries. Moreover, the flexible solid-state Zn-air battery using such FeS2–CoS2/NCFs electrode can stably power LED panels even under twisting state, demonstrating practical potentials in wearable and portable electrochemical devices.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen electrocatalysis reactions on cathodes significantly suppresses the energy efficiency of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, by coupling in situ generated CoS nanoparticles rich in cobalt vacancies (VCo) with a dual-heteroatom-doped layered carbon framework, a hybrid Co-based catalyst (Co1-xS@N/S-C) is designed and synthesized from Co-MOF precursor. Experimental analyses, together with density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, demonstrate that the facilitated ion diffusion enabled by the introduced VCo, together with the enhanced electron transport benefiting from the well-designed dual-heteroatom-doped laminated carbon framework, synergistically boost the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of Co1-xS@N/S-C (ΔE = 0.76 V), which is much superior to that of CoS@N/S-C without VCo (ΔE = 0.89 V), CoS without VCo (ΔE = 1.23 V), and the dual-heteroatom-doped laminated carbon framework. As expected, the further assembled ZAB employing Co1-xS@N/S-C as the cathode electrocatalyst exhibits enhanced energy efficiency in terms of better cycling stability (510 cycles/170 hours) and a higher specific capacity (807 mA h g-1). Finally, a flexible/stretched solid state micro-ZAB (F/SmZAB) with Co1-xS@N/S-C as the cathode electrocatalyst and a wave-shaped GaIn-Ni-based liquid metal as the electronic circuit is further designed, which can display excellent electrical properties and long elongation. This work provides a new defect and structure coupling strategy for boosting the oxide electrolysis activities of Co-based catalysts. Furthermore, F/SmZAB represents a promising solution for a compatible micropower source in wearable microelectronics.
"Fence" Effect Enabling a Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Single-Atom Co-N-C Catalyst for High-Performance Zn-Air Batteries

Abstract:It offers bright prospects to develop non-Pt group metal (non-PGM) electrocatalysts in the area of energy storage and conversion. Herein, we reported a simple spatial isolation strategy to synthesize Co-based electrocatalysts, using partially substituted Zn atoms in a ZnCo-ZIF precursor. The "fence" effect that originated from the partially substituted Zn atoms can yield a better isolation of Co atoms, achieving selective loading of Co species on nitrogen-doped porous carbon varying from nanoparticles to single atoms. The low boiling point of Zn enables abundant porous structures to the N-doped carbon substrate after pyrolysis. The best performing single-atom Co catalyst (Co-SAs/N-C) exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity in alkaline media. As an illustration, the rechargeable liquid Zn-air battery incorporating the Co-SAs/N-C catalyst demonstrates a substantial open circuit voltage of 1.49 V, a high specific capacity of 689.3 mAh g-1, and remarkable cycling stability over 200 h. This study paves the way for the strategic development of non-PGM electrocatalysts in battery applications.
Confinement synthesis of bimetallic MOF-derived defect-rich nanofiber electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Abstract:Zn-air batteries with high energy density and safety have acquired enormous attention, while the practical application is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) defect-rich bifunctional electrocatalyst (CoFe/N CNFs) comprising irregular hollow CoFe nanospheres in N-doped carbon nanofibers is presented, which is fabricated from CoFe ZIFs-derived (ZIF: zeolitic-imidazolate framework) polymer nanofibers precursor. The CoFe ZIFs with tunable particle size and composition are constructed using a confined synthesis strategy. Moreover, the Kirkendall diffusion process is available for forming the irregular hollow CoFe nanospheres, and the decomposition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) results in forming the defective carbon nanofibers, which provide more efficient active sites and enhance the electrocatalytic properties toward both OER and ORR. The optimized CoFe/N CNFs exhibit superior bifunctional activities, outperforming that of the benchmark Pt/C + RuO 2 catalyst. As a result, the CoFe/N CNFs as an air-cathode endow the rechargeable Zn-air battery with an excellent power density of 149 mW·cm −2 , energy density of 875 Wh·kg −1 , and cycling stability. This work provides a new strategy to develop bifunctional electrocatalysts with desired nanostructure and regulated performance toward energy applications.

Abstract:Rational design and exploration of highly efficient nonprecious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are vital for metal-air batteries. Herein, a folic acid based metal–organic gels (MOG) is synthesized based on coordination induced self-assemble strategy, which affords well-defined dispersion cobalt implanted into N-doped porous carbon (CoNC-MOG-x) via pyrolysis. The as-obtained CoNC-MOG-x possesses well distributed Co nanoparticles and larger accessible surface areas than the CoNC without self-assemble process. Taking advantage of the unique structure, the CoNC-MOG-9 exhibits good oxygen reduction reaction activity, and the half-wave potentials for oxygen reduction reaction is 0.815 V. In addition, it also displays high oxygen evolution reaction activity with overpotential of 0.40 V at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 76 mV dec-1. Furthermore, integrated CoNC-MOG-9 cathode in an all-solid-state zinc-air battery exhibits a high specific power of 63 mW cm−2 as well as excellent stability and durability.

Abstract:The development of economical and energy-efficient electrocatalysts is essential for the wide-scale application of secondary zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we prepared Co9S8 and FeS2 nanoparticles inlaid on N-doped carbon nanofibers (Co9S8-FeS2@N-CNFs), which were derived from the in situ growth of Fe-doped ZIF-67 nanosheet arrays on electrospun nanofibers and a subsequent sulfidation process. The Co9S8-FeS2@N-CNFs display excellent electrocatalytic performances for OER (Ej=10, 330 mV) and ORR (E1/2, 0.80 V) as well as a smaller charge and discharge gap (ΔE, 0.76 V) in KOH electrolyte, allowing it to be employed as an attractive air cathode bifunctional catalyst for secondary ZABs. The electrocatalytic performance of the composite materials (Co9S8-FeS2@N-CNFs) is obviously better than that of the single-component materials (FeS2@N-CNFs and Co9S8@N-CNFs). The improved catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the two transition-metal sulfides and the optimization of the structure. Furthermore, the peak power density of the assembled aqueous/solid-state ZABs based on Co9S8-FeS2@N-CNFs can reach 214 and 91 mW cm-2 with excellent stability, respectively, which outperforms the ones based on commercial precious-metal-based catalysts. We anticipate that our work will provide new inspiration for the design of MOF-derived sulfides as multifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:The realization of durable and efficient oxygen evolution reactions (OER) at large current densities and low overpotentials is of significant importance but remains a great challenge. In this study, a CoFe/Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 /CC (CF//CC) heterogeneous structure was fabricated by isolating CoFe/Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 S (CF/CFS) particles locked in nitrogen/sulfur codoped carbon nanotubes (NS-CNTs). Appreciable oxygen evolution reaction activity and durability was achieved with an ultralow overpotential of 110 mV at 10 mA•cm −2 . The operation was stable for 300 h at a current density of 500 mA•cm −2 . The structure was then assembled into a zinc-air battery (ZAB), which delivered a high power density of 194 mW•cm −2 , a specific capacity of 837.3 mAh•g Zn -1 , and stable operation for 788 h without obvious voltage attenuation and altered morphology. The electronic interactions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which revealed that both the bimetal components and the synergistic effect at the interface stimulated the transfer of Co and Fe sites to higher chemical valence states. Theoretical calculations indicated that the synergistic effect of the bimetal components, build-in interfacial potential, and surface chemical reconstruction adjusted the Fermi level to optimize the thermodynamic formation of O* to OOH*, thus enhancing the intrinsic activity.

Abstract:Earth-rich, durable, and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vitally important for the wide application of zinc-air batteries in the future. However, due to the single active site, traditional commercial benchmark catalysts typically exhibit selective activity in only one of the two reactions (ORR or OER), making it difficult to meet the dual functional catalytic requirements. Developing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts that achieve diverse active sites on a single catalyst and understanding their internal synergistic reaction activity remain a challenge. Herein, spherical hollow porous carbon matrix composites (s-Co/CoNC) with the coexistence of diverse intrinsic active sites including Co-N x and Co-O x species and metal Co nanoparticles were prepared by pyrolysis with oxygen-enriched Co-MOFs as precursor in the presence of melamine. Owing to the combined advantages of the catalyst including the great specific surface area, good conductivity, abundant diverse intrinsic active sites towards ORR and OER, and the electronic interaction among active sites and the optimized the adsorption/desorption process of oxygen species at the catalyst surface, s-Co/CoNC exhibits desirable electrocatalytic activity for both ORR and OER with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.81 V, an OER potential of 1.53 V(vs. RHE at 10 mA cm −2 ), providing a small reversible potential difference of 0.72 V, superior to the commercial noble-metal catalysts and the most reported cobalt based ORR/OER catalysts. The assembled s-Co/CoC-based rechargeable Zn-air batteries possess high peak power density of 101.7 mW cm −2 . This work provides a significant strategy for constructing high-performance dual functional catalysts for secondary Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:The exploitation of high-efficiency and cheap bifunctional cathode electrocatalyst is of significant importance to rechargeable zinc–air batteries. In this paper, a bimetallic sulfide coupled with a CNT ((Co, Mg)S2@CNTs) hybrid catalyst is developed via a proposed vulcanization process. The (Co, Mg)S2@CNTs) with controllable Mg substitution has a tailored crystal structure (amorphous and crystalline), which catalyzes the oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER). The active sites of CoS2@CNTs are activated by doping Mg ions, which accelerates the kinetics of the oxygen adsorption for ORR and oxygen desorption for OER. Meanwhile, the hybrid catalyst exhibits a unique hierarchal morphology and a "catalytic buffer", which further accelerate the mass transfer of catalytic processes. In addition, the outer wall of CNTs as substrate effectively avoid the agglomeration of (Co, Mg)S2 particles by reasonably providing adsorption sites. The inner and outer walls of CNTs form a high-speed conduction pathway, quickly transferring the electrons produced by oxygen catalytic reactions. As a result, the (Co, Mg)S2@CNTs exhibit an ORR performance comparable with commercial catalyst Pt/C-RuO2 and remarkable OER performance (Ej=10 = 1.59 V).
