Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:An efficient intracavity single-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 1.571-micron eye-safe range using a non-critically phase-matched KTP crystal is reported. The OPO is excited by a diode side-pumped electro-optic Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.064 microns. Signal pulse of 97 mJ and 3.56 ns is obtained under the input electric energy of 2.3 J, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 4.2%, and a repetition rate range of 1-30 Hz.

Abstract:We report a continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating optical vortices tunable in the ultraviolet (UV). Based on MgO:sPPLT as the nonlinear crystal, the singly resonant OPO is pumped by a cw vortex beam in the green, and deploying intracavity sum-frequency generation (SFG) between the undepleted pump and the Gaussian resonant signal in the crystal of BiB3O6, it can generate optical vortices of order, luv=1 and 2, tunable across 332-344 nm in the UV with a maximum power of 12 mW. Due to conservation of orbital angular momentum in the parametric process, the OPO also produces a non-resonant idler output beam in a vortex spatial profile of order li=1 and 2, identical to the pump vortex, with the signal beam in Gaussian distribution. The idler vortex is tunable across 1172-1338 nm with maximum output power of 1.3 W.

Abstract:A simple and high-efficiency method for direct generation of all-solid-state single- and dual-vortex lasers operating at eye-safe wavelengths is reported in a compact diode-end-pumped Nd:YAG laser cavity. By off-axis pumping of the Nd:YAG in two orthogonal directions, the original cavity mode, fundamental Gaussian mode (TEM00), is directly transformed into first-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG01) mode with single- or dual-vortex structures depending on the degree of the off-axis pumping. Moreover, the single- and dual-vortex lasers can be produced in simultaneous eye-safe dual-wavelength operation with the aid of an intracavity etalon. At the same time, a novel method to determine the handedness of achieved vortex lasers by using a plane-concave mirror with suitable coating is also proposed. This method can be perfectly applied to generate vortex lasers at other emissions bands for various applications by using different laser gain mediums. This work paves a general way to simple and efficient realization and determination of vortex lasers.

Abstract:A low-threshold continuous wave dual-wavelength mid-infrared laser is demonstrated by using an intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with a dual-wavelength pump wave. To realize a high-quality dual-wavelength pump wave, a composite Nd:YVO4/Nd:GdVO4 gain medium is applied for a linear polarized state and synchronization output. With the quasi-phase-matching OPO process, it is found that the dual-wavelength pump wave shares equal signal wave oscillation and leads to a lower OPO threshold. Finally, a diode threshold pumped power of barely 2 W can be achieved for the balanced intensity dual-wavelength watt-level mid-IR laser.

Abstract:A high energy eye-safe and mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is demonstrated. The nonlinear media is a Y-cut KTA crystal with the length of 20 mm, which is pumped by a Nd:YAG laser. Both eye-safe and mid-infrared laser are output with high energy. When the pump energy is 1 J and the pulse duration is 10 ns, we get 53 mJ idler at 3.632 mu m and 151 mJ signal at 1.505 mu m. As we know, the idler energy is the highest at the wavelength beyond 3.5 mu m and the signal energy is the highest with Y-cut KTA. The results prove that the Y-cut KTA crystal can produce the signal and idler with the energies as high as these in the paper. Abstract:A high efficiency, continuous-wave, narrow linewidth, pump-enhanced optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.8 µm was demonstrated, which was pumped by a 1064 nm fiber laser with a linewidth of 18 kHz. The low frequency modulation locking technique was employed to stabilize the output power. The wavelengths of signal and idler were 1475.5 nm and 3819.9 nm at 25 °C, respectively. The pump-enhanced structure was applied, leading to a maximum quantum efficiency of over 60% with pump power of 3 W. The maximum output power of idler light is 1.8 W with a linewidth of 363 kHz. The excellent tuning performance of the OPO was also demonstrated. In order to avoid mode-splitting and decrease of pump enhancing factor due to feedback light in the cavity, the crystal was placed obliquely to the pump beam and the maximum output power was increased by 19%. At the maximum output power of idler light, the M2 factors in the x and y directions were 1.30 and 1.33, respectively.

Abstract:A high-pulse-energy eye-safe laser at 1552 nm is effectually generated by an intracavity Nd:YLF/KTP optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with the help of the thermally induced polarization switching. The polarization characteristics of the c-cut Nd:YLF laser at 1053 nm in the continuous-wave (CW) and Q-switched operation are comprehensively investigated. We experimentally verify the thermally induced birefringence can lead to a polarization switching between the mutually orthogonal components of the fundamental pulses. Consequently, an efficient intracavity nonlinear frequency conversion can be achieved in an optically isotropic laser crystal without any additional polarization control. With this finding, the pulse energy and peak power of the compact Nd:YLF/KTP eye-safe laser under an incident pump power of 12.7 W and a pulse repetition rate of 5 kHz are up to 306 μJ and 4 kW, respectively.

Abstract:We have operated a CW triply resonant OPO using a PPLN crystal pumped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 micron and generating signal and idler modes in the 2-2.3 micron range. The OPO was operated stably in single mode operation over large periods of time with a pump threshold as low as 500 microwatts.

Abstract:An efficient intracavity KTA optical parametric oscillator (OPO) driven by diode-end-pumped acousto-optical Q-switched Nd:YVO(4) laser is demonstrated. The mode mismatch between fundamental cavity and OPO cavity caused by the thermal lens effect in Nd:YVO(4) crystal as the pump power increased was studied. To lessen mode mismatch, a thermal lens-like cavity mirror made of plane BK7 glass induced by idler absorption was introduced into the OPO cavity. Under a diode pump power of 20 W, a maximum 1535nm light output power of 3.6 W was achieved at the pulse repetition rate of 60 kHz, corresponding to a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 18%. This is the highest efficiency reported for eye-safe laser based on intracavity OPO.
Towards High-Energy Few-Cycle Optical Vortices with Minimized Topological Charge Dispersion

Abstract:A simple approach to generate high-energy few-cycle optical vortices with minimized topological charge dispersion is introduced. By means of numerical simulations it is shown that, by leveraging the intrinsic properties of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), clean transfer of topological charge from a high energy narrowband pump pulse to a broadband idler is feasible under certain particular conditions, enabling the generation of high-energy few-cycle vortex pulses with extremely low topological charge dispersion.

Abstract:Vector-vortex beams, having both phase and polarization singularities, are of great interest for a variety of applications. Generally, such beams are produced through systematic control of phase and polarization of the laser beam, typically external to the source. However, efforts have been made to generate vector-vortex beams directly from the laser source. Given the operation of the laser at discrete wavelengths, vector-vortices are generated with limited or no wavelength tunability. Here, we report an experimental scheme for the direct generation of vector-vortex beams. Exploiting the orbital angular momentum conservation and the broad wavelength versatility of an optical parametric oscillator, we systematically control the polarization of the resonant beam using a pair of intracavity quarter-wave plates to generate coherent vector-vortex beam tunable across 964-990 nm, with output states represented on the higher-order Poincaré sphere. The generic experimental scheme paves the way for new sources of structured beams in any wavelength range across the optical spectrum and in all time-scales from continuous-wave to ultrafast regime.

Abstract:A tunable femtosecond optical parametric amplifier with weak CW seeding, a compromise between OPG/OPA and strongly seeded OPA configurations, has been demonstrated. A CW Nd:YVO4 laser with sub-watt power helps to saturate and stabilize the output pulses from the OPA, and meanwhile a direct tunable range from 1.01 to 1.08 μm at the signal wavelength is obtained. Output signal energies as high as 30 μJ with pulse durations less than 250 fs within the tuning range are reported from this two-stage device.

Abstract:We report on a novel experimental scheme to generate continuous-wave (cw), high power, and higher-order optical vortices tunable across mid-IR wavelength range. Using cw, two-crystal, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (T-SRO) and pumping one of the crystals with Gaussian beam and the other crystal with optical vortices of orders, lp = 1 to 6, we have directly transferred the vortices at near-IR to the mid-IR wavelength range. The idler vortices of orders, li = 1 to 6, are tunable across 2276-3576 nm with a maximum output power of 6.8 W at order of, li = 1, for the pump power of 25 W corresponding to a near-IR vortex to mid-IR vortex conversion efficiency as high as 27.2%. Unlike the SROs generating optical vortices restricted to lower orders due to the elevated operation threshold with pump vortex orders, here, the coherent energy coupling between the resonant signals of the crystals of T-SRO facilitates the transfer of pump vortex of any order to the idler wavelength without stringent operation threshold condition. The generic experimental scheme can be used in any wavelength range across the electromagnetic spectrum and in all time scales from cw to ultrafast regime.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a picosecond pulsed, synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator producing vortex beam output with tunable wavelengths in the near- to mid-infrared range. The system utilizes a Nd:YVO4 picosecond pulsed solid-state laser emitting at a wavelength of 1.064 μm to pump a Z-shaped, singly resonant OPO which contains a MgO:PPLN crystal with a fan-shaped grating. The wavelength tuning characteristics of the OPO output are examined both as a function of the MgO:PPLN grating period and crystal temperature. The orbital angular momentum of the pump field can be selectively transferred to either the signal or idler fields by appropriately adjusting the location of the MgO:PPLN crystal within the OPO cavity. The maximum output power of the signal and idler vortex fields are 5.12 W and 3.46 W, respectively, for an incident pump power of 19 W.

Abstract:We report the generation of tunable high-order optical vortices in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) using a picosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The OPO is based on MgO:PPLN as the nonlinear gain medium and synchronously pumped by a mode-locked Yb-fiber laser at 1064 nm. Using a singly-resonant oscillator configuration for the OPO, we have achieved direct transfer of pump optical vortices to the non-resonant idler beam, with the resonant signal in the Gaussian cavity mode. We demonstrate the successful transfer of pump optical vortices of order, lp = 1 to 5, to the idler beam of the same order across the mid-IR, with an output power of 630 mW to 130 mW across 2538 nm to 4035 nm for the highest idler vortex order, li = 5. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an OPO pumped by a vortex beam of order as high as lp = 5 and generating idler vortices of high order in the mid-IR.

Abstract:We report a new type of optical parametric oscillator (OPO) cavity, i.e., a compound cavity OPO. Both the numerical simulation and experimental results show that this type of cavity is superior, in that its threshold is lower than that of a simple narrow-band cavity with dispersive elements, and its external efficiency is increased while its narrow linewidth remains nearly the same across the tunable range of the nonlinear crystals used.

Abstract:A high-efficiency technique for optical vortex（OV） generation is proposed and demonstrated. The technique is based on liquid crystal fork gratings with space-variant azimuthal orientations, which are locally controlled via polarization-sensitive alignment layers. Thanks to the optical rewritability of the alignment agent and the dynamic image generation of the digital micro-mirror device, fork gratings can be instantly and arbitrarily reconfigured.Corresponding optical vortices carrying arbitrary azimuthal and radial indices are demonstrated with a conversion efficiency of 98.5%, exhibiting features of polarization control and electrical switching. The technique may pave a bright road toward OV generation, manipulation, and detection.
