Abstract:A single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The FOPO operates fundamentally by resonating the nondegenerate signal and idler in two separate optical cavities independently, combined with a subring cavity inserted inside the signal cavity as a mode restricting device. The proposed structure is first reported, to the best of our knowledge, which reduces the threshold pump power at a ratio of 38% compared with the usual singly resonant FOPO, and achieves an SLM oscillation with sidemode suppression ratio of greater than 51 dB.

Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:The development of fiber optical parametric oscillators (FOPO) based on highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber is reviewed in this paper. Firstly, the background and motivation are introduced, and it is pointed out that the FOPO is promising to act as optical source in non-conventional wavelength bands. Subsequently, the context focuses principally on the problem of inherent multiple-longitudinal-mode characteristic of FOPO and the corresponding solutions to it. The primary technique is by locking the phase of multiple longitudinal modes. The first reported actively mode locked FOPO is also presented in this article. However, it is not probable to realize passively mode locked FOPO because of the random phase dithering of the pump required for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering. Furthermore, a regeneratively mode locked FOPO is demonstrated, which can generate wide band tunable radiation in nonconventional wavelengths. Besides mode locked FOPO, the single-longitudinal-mode FOPO is also introduced. Finally, potential future directions are discussed.

Abstract:We report a new type of optical parametric oscillator (OPO) cavity, i.e., a compound cavity OPO. Both the numerical simulation and experimental results show that this type of cavity is superior, in that its threshold is lower than that of a simple narrow-band cavity with dispersive elements, and its external efficiency is increased while its narrow linewidth remains nearly the same across the tunable range of the nonlinear crystals used.

Abstract:We demonstrate active mode locking of a fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO). By inserting an amplitude modulator (AM) into a continuous-wave pumped FOPO loop, intracavity loss is varied periodically. When the modulation frequency of AM coincides with the harmonics of longitudinal modes spacing of the loop cavity, stable 10-GHz pulse train can be obtained. By adjusting the intracavity filter, the wavelength of the pulse train can be tuned over 21 nm.

Abstract:A wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology at wavelength around 1 mu m is demonstrated. A continuous wave single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium doped fiber laser with a line-width of 0.05 nm is modulated through a LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator to be a pulsed source with variable repetition rate. The pulsed source is amplified with a two-stage ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) to a mediate power and a high power YDFA to peak power higher than 40 W. And a homemade 50-m photonic crystal fiber (PCF) which provides the optical parametric gain is pumped by the pulsed source. The optical modulator is driven by a frequency-swept electrical clock signal with frequency ranges from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus the FOPO generates a wavelength-swept light source with a range of 80 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. Through careful customizing the sweeping rate of the driving clock signal, the sweeping rate of the parametric oscillator can be up to 10 kHz, which is limited by currently used electrical sweeping source. The generated pulses train are with pulse width of about 110 ps. For the electrical scan is used instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method in conventional wavelength-swept sources, it performs better stability under prolonged operation. The wavelength-swept FOPO is potential to be applied in OCT systems for its good stability and advantaged wavelength band.

Abstract:The stable operation of a high-repetition-rate dispersion-tuned harmonically mode-locked fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The experimental results match well with the theory. By introducing large cavity dispersion, the round-trip delay can vary with wavelength. Thus the cavity can be synchronized with the modulation frequency of an external clock passively. The FOPO can be tuned simply by adjusting the modulation frequency. A stable 10-GHz pulse train is obtained over 6-nm tuning range for each of the signal and idler.

Abstract:A low-threshold continuous wave dual-wavelength mid-infrared laser is demonstrated by using an intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with a dual-wavelength pump wave. To realize a high-quality dual-wavelength pump wave, a composite Nd:YVO4/Nd:GdVO4 gain medium is applied for a linear polarized state and synchronization output. With the quasi-phase-matching OPO process, it is found that the dual-wavelength pump wave shares equal signal wave oscillation and leads to a lower OPO threshold. Finally, a diode threshold pumped power of barely 2 W can be achieved for the balanced intensity dual-wavelength watt-level mid-IR laser.

Abstract:A novel double-pumped ring cavity multiwavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) with tunable wavelength spacing is proposed. In the MW-FOPO, we utilize a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber as the gain medium and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as the comb-like filter. Twenty-four-wavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO with a ripple less than 4.3 dB and a wavelength spacing of about 0.8 nm in a wavelength range from 1541 to 1558 nm is experimentally demonstrated. The wavelength spacing can be continuously tuned and multiwavelength lasings with wavelength spacings of 0.08, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 nm are demonstrated, respectively. We discussed the power stability of the multiwavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO. A comparison of the output spectra among the double-pumped MW-FOPO, the single-pumped MW-FOPO, and the multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:A wide-tunable, low-threshold, extra-cavity singly resonant optical parametric oscillator(OPO) has been reported, which is based on periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 (PPMgLN). The OPO system, compact and simple, adopts a passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the pump source and realizes quasi-phase-matched optical parametric oscillation at room temperature. The threshold value of the OPO system is only 0.27 W (single pulse energy of 4.5 μJ, pulse duration of 35 ns) at 1 064 nm. When the pump power is 1.35 W (pulse energy of 8.2 μJ, pulse duration of 35 ns), an idler output power of 161.9 mW at 3.202 μm, and a signal output power of 98.5 mW at 1.594 μm have been achieved, and this corresponds to a whole (idler+signal) optic-optic conversion efficiency of 19.3%. Abstract:A compact and flexible dual-wavelength eye-safe intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) configuration driven by a coaxially end pumped laser was proposed. Two fundamental waves were provided by a coaxially end pumped Q-switched dual-wavelength laser with combined two laser crystals, and the OPO cavity was placed inside the laser cavity for efficient conversion. Theoretical simulations showed that the power ratio for each signal wave, as well as the time interval between two pulses at different wavelengths, were both tunable by tuning the pump focusing depth or pump wavelength. Experimental results were performed with combined laser crystals (Nd: YAG and a-cut Nd: YLF) and a nonlinear crystal (KTA), demonstrating coincident conclusions. The maximum OPO output power was 724 mW (388 mW at 1506 nm and 336 mW at 1535 nm) with the LD pump power of 10 W at 6 kHz, corresponding to the optical-optical conversion efficiency of 7.24%. As there was no gain competition between two fundamental waves, stable signal output could be obtained. Moreover, various wavelength pairs can be generated by using different laser crystal combinations. It is believed that this is a promising method for simultaneously generating dual-wavelength eye-safe lasers pulses.

Abstract:We demonstrate a picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator with an ultrawide tuning range pumped by a relatively low-cost intensity-modulated pump. The tuning range of the oscillator is from 1320 to 1520 nm and from 1580 to 1820 nm, which is as wide as 440 nm, with a wavelength span of 500 nm. A 40-m dispersion-shifted fiber is employed inside a cavity as the parametric gain medium. In the wavelength region from 1320 to 1395 nm and from 1720 to 1820 nm, the linewidth of the sideband is less than 1 nm without the use of any wavelength-selective element inside the cavity. Pulses with pulsewidths from 7 to 17 ps are generated.

Abstract:A high efficiency, continuous-wave, narrow linewidth, pump-enhanced optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.8 µm was demonstrated, which was pumped by a 1064 nm fiber laser with a linewidth of 18 kHz. The low frequency modulation locking technique was employed to stabilize the output power. The wavelengths of signal and idler were 1475.5 nm and 3819.9 nm at 25 °C, respectively. The pump-enhanced structure was applied, leading to a maximum quantum efficiency of over 60% with pump power of 3 W. The maximum output power of idler light is 1.8 W with a linewidth of 363 kHz. The excellent tuning performance of the OPO was also demonstrated. In order to avoid mode-splitting and decrease of pump enhancing factor due to feedback light in the cavity, the crystal was placed obliquely to the pump beam and the maximum output power was increased by 19%. At the maximum output power of idler light, the M2 factors in the x and y directions were 1.30 and 1.33, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber and continuously wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology around 1 μm. The alignment-free FOPO is pumped by a pulse train light, driven by a frequency-swept electric pulse source with a repetition rate ranging from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus, the FOPO demonstrates a wavelength-swept output with a sweeping range of 100 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. The sweeping rate can be improved up to 100 kHz, while the cumulative speed exceeds 1000 000 nm s−1. Since the electric scanning is used in an all-fiber setup instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method, it demonstrates better stability under prolonged operation, which is promising to be applied in biomedical imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems and other applications.
