Abstract:The end-to-end (E2E) optimization of optics and image processing, dubbed deep optics, has renewed the state-of-the-art in various computer vision tasks. However, specifying the proper model representation or parameterization of the optical elements remains elusive. This article comprehensibly investigates three modeling hypotheses of the phase coded-aperture imaging under a representative context of deep optics, joint all-in-focus (AiF) imaging and monocular depth estimation (MDE). Specifically, we analyze the respective trade-off of these models and provide insights into relevant domain-specific requirements, explore the connection between the spatial feature of the point spread function (PSF) and the performance trade-off between the AiF and MDE tasks, and discuss the model sensitivity to possible fabrication errors. This study provides new prospects for future deep optics designs, particularly those aiming for AiF and/or MDE.(c) 2022 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in illumination design. It liberates designers and engineers from restrictions of optical surface geometry, enabling them to achieve compact, lightweight, and efficient illumination systems with excellent optical performance. Freeform optics is currently used widely for both fundamental research and practical applications. This Review focuses on the design of freeform illumination optics, which is a key factor in advancing the development of illumination engineering. The design methods of freeform illumination optics can be divided into two groups: zero-etendue algorithms based on ideal source assumption and design algorithms for extended light sources. The zero-etendue algorithms include ray mapping method, Monge-Ampere equation method, and supporting quadric method. The algorithms for extended sources include illumination optimization, feedback design, and simultaneous multiple surfaces method. The characteristics and limitations of these design methods are illustrated and a summary of these methods with future outlooks is also given.
Flat Optical Lens by Use of 90-Degree Volume Holographic Grating Recording Geometry and Nonvolatile Thermal Fixing in LiNbO3:Fe Crystal

Abstract:A new design and fabrication of flat optical lens by use of 90-degree volume holographic grating recording geometry is presented. It is recorded by the interference of a plane wave and a spherical wave in a Fe-doped LiNbO3. The flat optical lens can laterally transfer and focus the plane wave which perpendicularly incidents on the planar crystal surface. The optimal switching from recording to thermal fixing is taken into consideration in order to obtain the nonvolatile hologram with maximum fixing efficiency. The flat optical lens with different recording and reconstructing wavelength has also been discussed. The flat optical lens has the advantages of light weight, laterally transferring and focusing, small duty ratio, and easy for the microstructure integration. The testing results measured verify that the flat optical lens can successfully be used for the free space optical communication.

Abstract:Flat optics has emerged as a key player in the area of structured light and its applications, owing to its subwavelength resolution, ease of integration, and compact footprint. Although its first generation has revolutionized conventional lenses and enabled anomalous refraction, new classes of meta-optics can now shape light and dark features of an optical field with an unprecedented level of complexity and multifunctionality. Here, we review these efforts with a focus on metasurfaces that use different properties of input light—angle of incidence and direction, polarization, phase distribution, wavelength, and nonlinear behavior—as optical knobs for tuning the output response. We discuss ongoing advances in this area as well as future challenges and prospects. These recent developments indicate that optically tunable flat optics is poised to advance adaptive camera systems, microscopes, holograms, and portable and wearable devices and may suggest new possibilities in optical communications and sensing.

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in beam shaping. Most of the current beam shaping systems are elaborately tailored for fixed optical properties, which means the output light distribution of a beam shaping system usually cannot be changed. What we present here is a class of beam shaping systems, the optical properties of which can be changed to meet the requirements for different applications. The proposed beam shaping system is composed of a freeform lens and a non-classical zoom system which is designed by ray aiming and the conservation of energy instead of aberration control. The freeform lens includes two elaborately designed freeform optical surfaces, by which both the intensity distribution and wave-front of an incident light beam are manipulated in a desired manner. The light beam after propagating through the non-classical zoom system produces an illumination pattern on a fixed observation plane with a variable pattern size and an unchanged irradiance distribution at different zoom positions. Two design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beam shaping systems.

Abstract:This feature issue of JOSA A and Applied Optics is dedicated to the fourteenth OSA Topical Meeting "Digital Holography and 3D Imaging" held 22-26 June 2020 in a virtual meeting. The conference, taking place every year, is a focal point for global technical interchange in the field of digital holography and 3D imaging, providing premier opportunities for people working in the field to present their new advances in research and development. Papers presented at the meeting highlight current research in digital holography and three-dimensional imaging, including interferometry, phase microscopy, phase retrieval, novel holographic processes, 3D and novel holographic displays, integral imaging, computer-generated holograms, compressive holography, 3D holographic display, AR display, full-field tomography, specific image and signal processing, and holography with various light sources, including coherent to incoherent and x-ray to terahertz waves. Abstract:The Optica Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 14–17 August 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting was organized co-jointly with the Optica Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. Since 2017, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) have presented a feature issue in each journal. This feature issues includes 17 papers in AO and 9 in JOSA A. Together they cover a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH Conference (DH 2024) will be held from 3 to 6 June in Paestum, Italy.
