Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.
Slow and fast nonlinearities in microfiber resonators

Abstract:Nonlinear optical properties of microfiber resonators are investigated. First, a miniature optical resonator standing in air is realized out of a silica microfiber, and measurements of the intensity transfer function show a wide variety of hysteresis cycles obtained at low scanning frequency of the input power. The results are satisfactorily interpreted through the action of thermally-induced nonlinear phase shifts. Secondly, we discuss the conditions under which the fast Kerr nonlinearity can be used efficiently in microfiber resonators under pulsed optical operation.

Abstract:When its diameter goes close to or below the wavelength of the guided light, an optical microfiber/nanofiber (MNF) exhibits favorable properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, and excellent mechanical strength, which offers plenty of choices for combining a variety of functionalized materials ranging from semiconductors and metals to laser dyes; opens up plenty of opportunities for developing microphotonic or nanophotonic devices; and inspires new opportunities for near-field optics, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics.

Although the basics of thermal radiation have been well understood for more than a century, engineering of thermal radiation is an active research field, in part because of applications to energy harvesting, lighting, and thermoregulation. The rapidly evolving research base sits at the intersection of materials science, photonics, and thermal physics. In eight research papers and one opinion paper, this feature issue of Optical Materials Express advances the multidisciplinary field of engineering of thermal light.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Integrated Ultra-High-Q Optical Resonator

Abstract:Optical microcavities are essential in numerous technologies and scientific disciplines. However, their application in many areas relies exclusively upon discrete microcavities in order to satisfy challenging combinations of ultra-low-loss performance (high cavity-Q-factor) and cavity design requirements. Indeed, finding a microfabrication bridge connecting ultra-high-Q device functions with micro and nanophotonic circuits has been a long-term priority of the microcavity field. Here, an integrated ridge resonator having a record Q factor over 200 million is presented. Its ultra-low-loss and flexible cavity design brings performance that has been the exclusive domain of discrete silica and crytalline microcavity devices to integrated systems. Two distinctly different devices are demonstrated: soliton sources with electronic repetition rates and high-coherence Brillouin lasers. This multi-device capability and performance from a single integrated cavity platform represents a critical advance for future nanophotonic circuits and systems.
