Abstract:Micro-and nano-photonics are advanced research topics of the 21st century right in the center of attention of the world's major developed countries, and will have significant and far-reaching impact on the future high-tech, national security, green energy and other areas. In recent years, the United States, European Union and other developed countries and regions have set up many major research plans for Micro and nano-photonics. Chinese scientists have also called on the government to establish relevant research programs to strengthen and improve the micro-and nano-photonics research in Chi-na.Micro-and nano-photonics combine the advanced research results of photonics and nano-technology, and is an indispensable science and technology discipline of the 21st century.Chinese scientists have achieved sig-nificant amounts of world-class research results in this field.In order to further investigate the impact of funda-mental theories and related key applications of Micro-and nano-photonics on the national economy in terms of advanced manufacturing and strategic resources, the Departments of Information Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Engineering Material Sciences, and the Policy Bureau of National Natural Science Founda-tion of China ( NSFC ) co-sponsored the 115 “Shuan-gqing forum”on“Micro-and nano-photonics”.38 scien-tists from 26 institutes and universities participate in this forum. Through in-depth discussions, the scientists summarized the key scientific problems in this field and explored the forefront research topics and funding strate-gy.A review on the forums is published in this special issue.

Abstract:The emergence of silicon photonics over the past two decades has established silicon as a preferred substrate platform for photonic integration. While most silicon-based photonic components have so far been realized in the near-infrared (near-IR) telecommunication bands, the mid-infrared (mid-IR, 2–20-μm wavelength) band presents a significant growth opportunity for integrated photonics. In this review, we offer our perspective on the burgeoning field of mid-IR integrated photonics on silicon. A comprehensive survey on the state-of-the-art of key photonic devices such as waveguides, light sources, modulators, and detectors is presented. Furthermore, on-chip spectroscopic chemical sensing is quantitatively analyzed as an example of mid-IR photonic system integration based on these basic building blocks, and the constituent component choices are discussed and contrasted in the context of system performance and integration technologies.

Abstract:This special issue combines 13 invited and 35 contributed papers, offering a unique perspective on the most recent developments in integrated photonics over the last few years. The invited papers, authored by world-renowned research groups and promising scientists from all over the world, present extended reviews on recent progresses and significant perspectives on future research directions. Heterogeneous integration of dissimilar materials for integrated photonics remains one of the most active and promising areas of research, with both traditional semiconductor materials such as amorphous Si, germanium, and III-V quantum dots on silicon, as well as emerging materials such as thin film lithium niobate, nitride, silicon carbide, diamond, etc. Device structures are being explored for new functional applications, from traditional Datacom/telecom to optical, RF and nonlinear signal processing, nonreciprocal optics, midwave infrared sensing, etc. Integration schemes and system architecutures are being pursued for quantum computing, signal processing, machine learning, energy efficient neuromorphic computing, etc.

Abstract:Microwave photonics is an interdisciplinary subject of microwave engineering and photonics technology. It is a fused microwave and optical system that studies the interaction between optical and microwave signals in the medium and the generation, processing, transmission, and receiving of microwave signals in the optical domain. Integration is an inevitable trend of microwave photonics since the performances of current discrete devices-based microwave photonic systems are poor in terms of size, power consumption, stability and cost. The main scientific and technical issues of integrated microwave photonics were discussed, its development status and frontier research progresses were summarized, and an outlook of its future prospects was given.

Abstract:The tremendous demand on low cost optoelectronic systems that may be used for high-density data communications, real time sensing/detection and high-speed control/actuation has heated up the research and development in silicon photonics, which studies the principles and technologies of merging electronics and photonics into the silicon platform. To make a silicon photonic system reality, the compatibility in device size and integration processing between the photonics and electronics is essential. Over the past years, unprecedented advancement on individual silicon photonic devices, such as waveguide, beam splitter, light source, modulator, and detector, have been reported, yet the progress in size and processing issues are still under development. To overcome the size incompatibility of the photonic devices and the electronic devices, the localization characters of the plasmonics and photonic crystal, and the high efficient smaller devices are brought into the play. On the other hand, the efforts in producing better coupling devices, better matched material systems are increased for tight integration of photonics and electronics. It is our intention to bring the research community’s attention to these particular research areas. In this ‘Special Issue on Silicon Photonics’, 5 review articles and 11 research articles focusing on relevant subjects by internationally active groups in the field are specially presented. More specifically, Prof. Ran of Peking University reviewed the transition from photonics to plasmonics from the point of view of the on-chip light source; Prof. Sun of Nankai University talked about the highly efficient silicon light emitting diodes through doping engineering; Prof. Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented his view on germanium quantum dots light-emitting devices; Dr. Li’s group in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), presented their progresses on infrared two-dimensional silicon photonic crystal slab devices; and Dr. Cheng’s group in the Institute of Semiconductor, CAS, summarized the recent development in photonic devices application of Ge-on-Si. Among the research articles, Prof. Zhou’s group and Prof. Huang’s group showed their results on surface plasmon involved emissions. The following papers are aimed to improve the device performance and efficiency: Prof. Zhang’s group and Dr. Yang’s group targeted better and smaller waveguides; Prof. Zhou’s group researched the binary blazed grating-based polarization-independent filter on silicon on insulator (SOI); Dr. Hou’s group and Dr. Li’s group reported their results on modulators by using quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) and Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). From materials, integration, and system performance point of view, Prof. Su’s group showed a compact all-optical differential-equation solver based on silicon microring resonator; Dr. Huang’s group spelled their vision on design of unidirectional emission silicon/ III-V laser for on-chip interconnects; Prof. Xu’s group and Dr. Huo’s group researched on the annealing effect on the optical and electronic properties of non-stoichiometric amorphous silicon carbide films and the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of tensile-strained Ge quantum wells and quantum dots to obtain best conditions for on-chip hetero structured light sources. Overall, articles in this special issue showcase the exciting achievements of silicon photonics, particularly in the interests of better devices and better integration. We hope the readers will find them inspiring and enjoyable. Finally, we would like to express our appreciations to authors for devoting their precious time to write the intriguing articles and to reviewers for their helpful comments.

To break the bottlenecks (power consumption,bandwidth and volume) of current information networks,several outstanding advantages of silicon photonics including low power consumption,high speed and very compact size are introduced in this paper. Comparing with the development of the microelectronics industry,the features and the major challenges of silicon photonics are analyzed,and the opportunities in the future are also pointed out.

Abstract:Recent progresses in materials design, synthesis and characterization, together with emerging methods for device fabrication and system assembly, have lead to high performance photonic materials, devices, and systems in bio-adaptable and/or bio-compatible formats, thereby enabling advanced bio-related photonic platforms. In this feature issue, 10 papers represent the most recent progress in various aspects of bio-inspired and bio-integrated materials from silicon, perovskites and organics, devices like photodetectors, plasmonic sensors and light emitters, and their diverse applications in areas including sensing, prosthesis and therapy. Although this feature issue only provides a glimpse of the vast field of bio-related photonics, we hope that it can offer a guideline for researchers involved in this emerging area.

Abstract:AbstractThe purpose of this article is to review the key emerging innovations in laser and photonics systems as well as their design and integration, focusing on challenges and opportunities for solutions of societal challenges. Developments, their significance, and frontier challenges are explained in advanced manufacturing, biomedicine and healthcare, and communication. Abstract:We review the emergence and development of integrated photonics and its status today. The treatise is focused on information and communications technology (ICT) applications, but the technology is generically employable for a wealth of other applications, such as sensors. General properties of the waveguides that form the basis of integrated photonics are reviewed, and several examples of integrated photonics based on silicon and plasmonics are presented. The all-important development of integrated low-power nanophotonics is discussed and current challenges and prospects of the field are elucidated. The treatment is focused on the photonic fabric between source and detector.

Abstract:As the transistor’s feature scales down and the integration density of the monolithic circuit increases continuously,the traditional metal interconnects face significant performance limitation to meet the stringent demands of high-speed,low-power and low-latency data transmission for on-and off-chip communications.Optical technology is poised to resolve these problems.Due to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor（CMOS） compatible process,silicon photonics is the leading candidate technology.Silicon photonic devices and networks have been improved dramatically in recent years,with a notable increase in bandwidth from the megahertz to the multi-gigahertz regime in just over half a decade.This paper reviews the recent developments in silicon photonics for optical interconnects and summarizes the work of our laboratory in this research field.

Abstract:Welcome to the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics (JSTQE) Special Issue on Photonic Electronic Co-Integration and Advanced Transfer Printing . Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the establishment and adoption of integrated photonic platforms which allow the design and fabrication of chips that can contain a few dozen up to even hundreds of photonic components. These so-called photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are manufactured at wafer-scale, potentially allowing similar high-volume and low-cost fabrication that has been driving the electronics industry for over half a century. A first main platform is the Indium Phosphide process which allows manufacturing of PICs that contain passive devices (waveguides, optical filters etc.), active opto-electronic devices (detectors and modulators) and optical gain elements (optical amplifiers and lasers). The second process that has emerged is Silicon Photonics, which here refers to both the SOI (Silicon-on-insulator) and the SiN (Silicon Nitride) processes. The SOI-based platform allows for integration of both passives and active devices, however monolithic integration of optical gain elements remains a difficult challenge due to Silicon's indirect bandgap. SiN platforms originally only included passive functionality, although recently monolithic platforms that include both SOI and SiN waveguides have started to emerge. A few Silicon Photonic platforms that monolithically integrate both photonics and electronics have also been established by both academia and industry.
