Abstract:Some recent advances in photonic integrated circuits are presented, including an InP-based monolithically integrated optical channel monitor, an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) triplexer and a novel design of polarization insensitive AWGs. The optical channel monitor comprises a flat-field echelle grating and a slab photodetector array. The channel passband is flattened and widened without loss penalty. The shape of the slab waveguide detectors and the layer structure are optimized to obtain low crosstalk and low polarization dependence. It also has a smaller size due to the elimination of output waveguides. For triplexers in fiber access networks, a cross-order AWG design is proposed to overcome the device layout difficulty due to the wide spectral range of the wavelength channels. The spectral periodicity of the grating is utilized to reduce the free spectral range requirement. Consequently, the AWG can operate at a higher diffraction order with a smaller overall size. Finally, a novel design of a polarization insensitive arrayed waveguide grating is presented. Unlike conventional AWGs where the optical path length difference is obtained only in the arrayed channel waveguides, we design the star coupler regions according to Rowland circle construction with an oblique incidence/diffraction angle. As a result, the optical path length difference is produced in both the channel waveguides and the slab waveguide regions. By using the birefringence difference between the channel waveguide and the slab waveguide, a polarization dispersion compensated AWG is realized without any additional fabrication step.

Abstract:With the development of novel optoelectronic materials and nanofabrication technologies, integrated photonics is a rapidly developing field that will promote the development and application of next‐generation photonic devices. In recent years, emerging two‐dimensional materials (2DMs) including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), black phosphorus (BP), and ternary compounds show many complementarities and unique characteristics over those of traditional optoelectronic materials including broadband absorption, ultrafast carrier mobility, strong nonlinear effects, and compatibility for monolithic integration. Herein, the recent progress on waveguide‐integrated active devices for a full photonic circuit based on 2DMs is reviewed. Both the development of nanofabrication techniques and the working mechanism of active photonic components based on 2DMs containing integrated light sources, waveguide‐integrated modulators, photodetectors, as well as some advanced 2DMs‐based optoelectronic devices are illustrated in detail. In the end, the existing challenges and perspectives on novel 2DMs‐integrated photonics are summarized and discussed.

Abstract:The monolithic integration of optical components with different functionalities on a single semiconductor wafer requires spatially selective control of bandgap energies. We have developed a simple, post-growth technique based on quantum well intermixing using ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing, which allows multiple selective area bandgap tailoring. Waveguide absorption spectra demonstrate that the bandgap energy can be shifted as much as 90 nm without any excess loss. By depositing a SiO2 layer of different thicknesses in different regions as the implantation mask, quantum wells in different sections of a wafer can be intermixed to different degrees in a single implantation and annealing process. It has also been shown that the heavy-hole and light hole states in the quantum wells can become degenerate at a certain degree of intermixing, which allows the fabrication of polarization insensitive optical amplifiers and electro-absorptive switches. The performance of both active (laser, amplifier, modulator) and passive (waveguide) components produced using this technique will be presented.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate light propagation sets the foundations for optical communication and information processing systems. With the ever-growing data capacity and data rate, photonic integrated circuits have attracted increasing attentions of researchers owing to their large-volume integration capacity and fast operation speed. In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new wavefront shaping method using waveguide arrays with hyperbolic secant refractive index profiles. Through theoretically analyzing the diffraction and coherence properties, we found that a single waveguide array can perform both imaging and phase transformation, which are the two primary functions of optical lenses. We further expanded this function and fabricated the corresponding devices on a silicon nitride waveguide platform. Deterministic beam shaping, such as focusing, expansion, collimation, and steering, is successfully realized. This wavefront control method exhibits the potential for on-chip optical routing, ranging, sensing, etc., with high integration density and scalability.

Abstract:Based on polymeric materials, the possibilities of monolithic integration of various optical waveguide components are discussed and, especially, the efforts to realize the functions of optical modulation and amplification on a single optical chip are made. Exploration of more capabilities of optical waveguides is also emphasized. The work on exploring functions of optical waveguides for the applications in WDM components and photonic phased-array radar systems are presented and multifunctional optical waveguide chips with the explored functions are fabricated.

Abstract:The emergence of silicon photonics over the past two decades has established silicon as a preferred substrate platform for photonic integration. While most silicon-based photonic components have so far been realized in the near-infrared (near-IR) telecommunication bands, the mid-infrared (mid-IR, 2–20-μm wavelength) band presents a significant growth opportunity for integrated photonics. In this review, we offer our perspective on the burgeoning field of mid-IR integrated photonics on silicon. A comprehensive survey on the state-of-the-art of key photonic devices such as waveguides, light sources, modulators, and detectors is presented. Furthermore, on-chip spectroscopic chemical sensing is quantitatively analyzed as an example of mid-IR photonic system integration based on these basic building blocks, and the constituent component choices are discussed and contrasted in the context of system performance and integration technologies.

We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/InP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically-integrated Rowland circle waveguide grating fabricated using chemically-assisted ion beam etching. The design incorporates ten wavelength channels at 1.55 /spl mu/m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm and multimode output waveguides to flatten channel response and reduce sensitivity to polarization.

Abstract:In wavelength-division multiplexing systems, it is important to develop various wavelength-selective components to have flexible and reconfigurable nodes. When using conventional optical waveguides with low index contrast, the sizes of these wavelength-selective components are usually several cm(2), which is too large to integrate more components in a single wafer or chip. In order to improve the integration density and reduce the cost, it is desirable to minimize the component sizes. In our case, two kinds of strongly-confined optical waveguides on silicon wafer are considered for compact wavelength-selective devices. One is the popular silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire and the other is SU-8 strip optical waveguide with an air cladding and a SiO2 insulator layer on a Si substrate. In this paper, we give a review of our recent work on wavelength-selective photonic integrated devices based on these two kinds of silicon-based optical waveguides with strong-confinements. Arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) and microring resonator (MRR), which are two typical wavelength-selective components are included. First we give a review for several new layouts for SOI-nanowire AWG to have a further size-reduction and our novel designs for diminishing the polarization dependency of AWGs. Secondly we present the design and fabrication of multimode interference (MMI) couplers for MRRs. A novel design method for tapered MMI couplers is presented and the diminishment of polarization in a MMI coupler is proposed by optimizing the tapered MMI section. We also present our experimental results on optical sensor combining MRRs and micro-fluid channel. The measured sensitivity is about 180nm/RIU.

Abstract:A technique, based on quantum well (QW) intermixing, has been developed for the post growth, spatially selective tuning of the QW bandgap in a semiconductor laser structure. High energy (MeV) ion implantation is used to create a large number of vacancies and interstitials in the device. During high temperature processing (rapid thermal annealing), these defects enhance the intermixing of the QW and the barrier materials while being annealed out, producing a blue shift of the QW bandgap. Increases in bandgap energy of greater than 100 nm at 1.55 mu m in InGaAs/lnGaAsP/InP structures can be achieved. Absorption spectroscopy in the waveguide geometry is used to quantify the losses in the structure. Using a simple masking scheme to spatially modify the defect concentration, different regions of a wafer can be blue shifted by different amounts. This allows the integration of many different devices such as lasers, detectors, modulators, amplifiers and waveguides on a single wafer using only a single, postgrowth processing step. The performance of both passive (waveguide) and active (laser and amplifier) devices produced using this technique will be described, as well as the practicality of this technique in the production of photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Silicon photonics is an enabling technology that provides integrated photonic devices and systems with low-cost mass manufacturing capability. It has attracted increasing attention in both academia and industry in recent years, not only for its applications in communications, but also in sensing. One important issue of silicon photonics that comes with its high integration density is an interface between its high-performance integrated waveguide devices and optical fibers or free-space optics. Surface grating coupler is a preferred candidate that provides flexibility for circuit design and reduces effort for both fabrication and alignment. In the past decades, considerable research efforts have been made on in-plane grating couplers to address their insufficiency in coupling efficiency, wavelength sensitivity and polarization sensitivity compared with out-of-plane edge-coupling. Apart from improved performances, new functionalities are also on the horizon for grating couplers. In this paper, we review the current research progresses made on grating couplers, starting from their fundamental theories and concepts. Then, we conclude various methods to improve their performance, including coupling efficiency, polarization and wavelength sensitivity. Finally, we discuss some emerging research topics on grating couplers, as well as practical issues such as testing, packaging and promising applications.

Abstract:The performance of silicon photonic components and integrated circuits has improved dramatically in recent years. As a key enabler, heterogeneous integration not only provides the optical gain which is absent from native Si substrates and enables complete photonic functionalities on chip, but also lays the foundation of versatile integrated photonic device performance engineering. This paper reviews recent progress of high-performance silicon photonics using heterogeneous integration, with emphasis on ultra-low-loss waveguides, single-wavelength lasers, comb lasers, and photonic integrated circuits including optical phased arrays for LiDAR and optical transceivers for datacenter interconnects.

Abstract:The research field of photonic crystals (PhCs) remains active on a global scale. PhCs, which are periodic optical nanostructures with the characteristics of excellent light field confinement and numerous varying degrees of freedom, provide a solid foundation for controlling the movement of light. Periodic variation of the index of refraction in two or three spatial dimensions with a substantial high-to-low ratio generates a number of intriguing phenomena and enables a variety of potential functionalities. Recently, intriguing devices based on PhCs, such as Y-branches, small-diameter bent waveguides, and miniature resonator cavities, have been proposed and extensively utilized. PhC waveguides are considered ideal candidates for a variety of applications, such as in power splitters, logic gates, sensing and communication fields, etc. These exceptional characteristics may facilitate the development of a dense integrated circuit. However, PhC technology is still relatively new and therefore requires additional effort to fully exploit it. This paper reviews the most popular and essential optical components based on PhCs, including power splitters, modulators, polarization maintaining devices, sensors, and lasers, to summarize the most recent developments relating this hot topic. These devices have superior performance and a smaller footprint compared to conventional photonic devices.

Silicon photonics for high-speed communications and photonic signal processing

Abstract:Abstract Leveraging on the mature processing infrastructure of silicon microelectronics, silicon photonic integrated circuits may be readily scaled to large volume production for low-cost high-volume applications such as optical transceivers for data centers. Driven by the rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence and the resultant rapid increase in data traffic in data centers, new integrated optical transceivers will be needed to support multichannel high-capacity communications beyond 1.6Tb/s. In this paper, we review some of the recent advances in high performance optical waveguide grating couplers (WGC) as a key enabling technology for future high capacity communications. We describe the novel use of shifted-polysilicon overlay gratings on top of the silicon grating that enabled foundry manufactured chips to have fiber-chip coupling losses of under 1 dB. The use of mirror symmetry and resonant cavity enhancement in the design of gratings can increase the 1-dB optical bandwidths of grating couplers to over 100 nm. Multimode waveguide grating couplers (MWGC) may be designed for the selective launch of different modes channels in multimode fibers for mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) communications. The use of different modes or polarizations in optical fibers for high capacity communications requires the unscrambling of data lanes which are mixed together during the optical fiber transmission. We describe how silicon photonic circuits can be used to perform unitary matrix operations and unscramble the different data lanes in multichannel optical communication systems. We also describe recent advances on high-speed silicon modulators for enabling data rates of individual data lanes in an integrated optical transceiver beyond 300 Gb/s.

Abstract:The main objective of the research towards high density optical integration is to realize ultra-dense optical planar integrated circuits that combine passive and active optical functionalities as well as electronics playing control and logic functions. The most desirable output would be to have available for a designer a set of monolithically integrated building blocks incorporating all the necessary optical and electronic functions upon a single silicon substrate. Here we will present some of the contributions made towards highly integrated photonic circuits by a collaborative groups of the Joint Research Center of Photonics of the Royal Institute of Technology and Zhejiang University: directional coupler wavelength selective filter based on dispersive ID Bragg reflection waveguide, vertically coupled photonic crystal filter], compact arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexer based on amorphous silicon nanowires and polarization beam splitter based on two-dimensional photonic crystal of pillar type.

Abstract:Silicon photonics has drawn increasing attention in the past few decades and is a promising key technology for future daily applications due to its various merits including ultra-low cost, high integration density owing to the high refractive index of silicon, and compatibility with current semiconductor fabrication process. Optical interconnects is an important issue in silicon photonic integrated circuits for transmitting light, and fiber-to-chip optical interconnects is vital in application scenarios such as data centers and optical transmission systems. There are mainly two categories of fiber-to-chip optical coupling: off-plane coupling and in-plane coupling. Grating couplers work under the former category, while edge couplers function as in-plane coupling. In this paper, we mainly focus on edge couplers in silicon photonic integrated circuits. We deliver an introduction to the research background, operation mechanisms, and design principles of silicon photonic edge couplers. The state-of-the-art of edge couplers is reviewed according to the different structural configurations of the device, while identifying the performance, fabrication feasibility, and applications. In addition, a brief comparison between edge couplers and grating couplers is conducted. Packaging issues are also discussed, and several prospective techniques for further improvements of edge couplers are proposed.
