Abstract:Saliency extraction has become a popular topic in imaging science. One of the challenges in image saliency extraction is to detect the saliency content efficiently with a full-resolution saliency map. Traditional methods only involve computer calculation and thus result in limitations in computational speed. An optical imaging system-based visual saliency extraction method is developed to solve this problem. The optical system is built by effectively implementing an optical Fourier process with a Fourier lens to form two frequency planes for further operation. The proposed method combines optical components and computer calculations and mainly relies on frequency selection with precise pinholes on the frequency planes to efficiently produce a saliency map. Comparison shows that the method is suitable for extracting salient information and operates in real time to generate a full-resolution saliency map with good boundaries. Abstract:This feature issue of JOSA A and Applied Optics is dedicated to the fourteenth OSA Topical Meeting "Digital Holography and 3D Imaging" held 22-26 June 2020 in a virtual meeting. The conference, taking place every year, is a focal point for global technical interchange in the field of digital holography and 3D imaging, providing premier opportunities for people working in the field to present their new advances in research and development. Papers presented at the meeting highlight current research in digital holography and three-dimensional imaging, including interferometry, phase microscopy, phase retrieval, novel holographic processes, 3D and novel holographic displays, integral imaging, computer-generated holograms, compressive holography, 3D holographic display, AR display, full-field tomography, specific image and signal processing, and holography with various light sources, including coherent to incoherent and x-ray to terahertz waves. Techniques of digital holography and of 3D imaging have numerous applications, such as the state-of-the-art technological developments that are currently underway and have also stimulated further novel applications of digital holography and 3D imaging in biomedicine, deep learning, and scientific and industrial metrologies. Abstract:The Optica Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 14–17 August 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting was organized co-jointly with the Optica Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. Since 2017, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) have presented a feature issue in each journal. This feature issues includes 17 papers in AO and 9 in JOSA A. Together they cover a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH Conference (DH 2024) will be held from 3 to 6 June in Paestum, Italy.

Abstract:The OSA Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 25-28 July 2016 in Heidelberg, Germany, as part of the Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. This year, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) jointly decided to have one such feature issue in each journal. This feature issue includes 31 papers in AO and 11 in JOSA B, and covers a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH meeting (DH 2017) will be held from 29 May to 1 June in Jeju Island, South Korea.

Abstract:Computational imaging technology (CIT), with its many variations, addresses the limitations of industrial design. CIT can effectively overcome the bottlenecks in physical information acquisition, model development, and resolution by being tightly coupled with mathematical calculations and signal processing in information acquisition, transmission, and interpretation. Qualitative improvements are achieved in the dimensions, scale, and resolution of the information. Therefore, in this review, the concepts and meaning of CIT are summarized before establishing a real CIT system. The basic common problems and relevant challenging technologies are analyzed, particularly the non-linear imaging model. The five typical imaging requirements–distance, resolution, applicability, field of view, and system size–are detailed. The corresponding key issues of super-large-aperture imaging systems, imaging beyond the diffraction limit, bionic optics, interpretation of light field information, computational optical system design, and computational detectors are also discussed. This review provides a global perspective for researchers to promote technological developments and applications.

Computational Imaging: the Improved and the Impossible

Abstract:While the performance of optical imaging systems is fundamentally limited by diffraction, the design and manufacture of practical systems is intricately associated with the control of optical aberrations. The fundamental Shannon limit for the number of resolvable pixels by an optical aperture is generally therefore not achieved due to the presence of off-axis aberrations or large detector pixels. We report how co-called computational-imaging (CI) techniques can enable an increase in imaging performance using more compact optical systems than are achievable with traditional optical design. We report how discontinuous lens elements, either near the pupil or close to the detector, yield complex and spatially variant PSFs that nevertheless provide enhanced transmission of information via the detector to enable imaging systems that are many times shorter and lighter than equivalent traditional imaging systems. Computational imaging has been made possible and attractive with the trend for advanced manufacturing of aspheric, asymmetric lens shapes at lower cost and by the exploitation of low-cost, high-performance digital computation. The continuation of these trends will continue to increase the importance of computational imaging.
