Abstract:We probe the thermodynamic structure of gravity at local scales. In any general curved spacetime, it is possible to transform to a local inertial frame at any point such that the metric is flat up to quadratic order where the curvature at that point comes in when the metric is written in Riemann normal coordinates. We consider local Rindler observers in that patch and hence the local Rindler horizon. In doing so, we find that the local horizons are also hot provided the $aL>>1$ which can always be satisfied.

Local Limit of Nonlocal Gravity: A Teleparallel Extension of General Relativity

Abstract:We describe a general constitutive framework for a teleparallel extension of the general theory of relativity. This approach goes beyond the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) by broadening the analogy with the electrodynamics of media. In particular, the main purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail a local constitutive extension of TEGR that is the local limit of nonlocal gravity (NLG). Within this framework, we study the modified FLRW cosmological models. Of these, the most cogent turns out to be the modified Cartesian flat model which is shown to be inconsistent with the existence of a positive cosmological constant. Moreover, dynamic dark energy and other components of the modified Cartesian flat model evolve differently with the expansion of the universe as compared to the standard flat cosmological model. The observational consequences of the modified Cartesian flat model are briefly explored and it is shown that the model is capable of resolving the H_0 tension.

Non-locality of the C- and D-theories

Abstract:Apparent similarities between non-local theories of gravity and the so-called C-theories are pointed out. It is shown that some simple C-theories can be mapped exactly into a previously considered type of ghost-free nonlocal gravity. This may introduce a useful tool to tackle some infinite-order derivative theories and raises the possibility of describing renormalisable gravity in a new context of D-theories.

Localised Gravity and Resolved Braneworlds

Abstract:Deriving an effective massless field theory for fluctuations about a braneworld spacetime requires analysis of the transverse-space-wavefunction's second-order differential equation. There can be two strikingly different types of effective theory. For a supersymmetric braneworld, one involves a technically consistent embedding of a supergravity theory on the worldvolume; the other can produce, in certain situations, a genuine localisation of gravity near the worldvolume but not via a technically consistent embedding. So, in the latter situation, the theory's dynamics remains higher-dimensional but there can still be a lower-dimensional effective-theory interpretation of the dynamics at low worldvolume momenta / large worldvolume distances. This paper examines the conditions for such a gravity localisation to be possible. Localising gravity about braneworld spacetimes requires finding solutions to transverse-space self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville problems admitting a normalisable zero mode in the noncompact transverse space. This in turn requires analysis of Sturm-Liouville problems with radial singular endpoints following a formalism originating in the work of Hermann Weyl. Examples of such gravity-localising braneworld systems are found and analysed in this formalism with underlying "skeleton" braneworlds of Salam-Sezgin, resolved D3-brane and Randall-Sundrum II types.

Abstract:A novel structure-preserving algorithm for general relativity in vacuum is derived from a lattice gauge theoretic discretization of the tetradic Palatini action. The resulting model of discrete gravity is demonstrated to preserve local Lorentz invariance and symplectic structure.

Abstract:This essay's title is justified by discussing a class of Yang-Mills-type theories of which standard Yang-Mills theories are special cases but which is broad enough to include gravity as a double field theory. We use the framework of homotopy algebras, where conventional Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \frak{g}$ of a `kinematic' algebra ${\cal K}$ with a color Lie algebra $\frak{g}$. The larger class of Yang-Mills-type theories are given by the tensor product of ${\cal K}$ with more general Lie-type algebras of which ${\cal K}$ itself is an example, up to anomalies that can be cancelled for the tensor product with a second copy $\bar{\cal K}$. Gravity is then given by ${\cal K}\otimes \bar{\cal K}$.

Energy and equations of motion in a tentative theory of gravity with a privileged reference frame

Abstract:Based on a tentative interpretation of gravity as a pressure force, a scalar theory of gravity was previously investigated. It assumes gravitational contraction (dilation) of space (time) standards. In the static case, the same Newton law as in special relativity was expressed in terms of these distorted local standards, and was found to imply geodesic motion. Here, the formulation of motion is reexamined in the most general situation. A consistent Newton law can still be defined, which accounts for the time variation of the space metric, but it is not compatible with geodesic motion for a time-dependent field. The energy of a test particle is defined: it is constant in the static case. Starting from 'dust', a balance equation is then derived for the energy of matter. If the Newton law is assumed, the field equation of the theory allows to rewrite this as a true conservation equation, including the gravitational energy. The latter contains a Newtonian term, plus the square of the relative rate of the local velocity of gravitation waves (or that of light), the velocity being expressed in terms of absolute standards.

Abstract:We explore the cosmological implications of the local limit of nonlocal gravity, which is a classical generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation within the framework of teleparallelism. An appropriate solution of this theory is the modified Cartesian flat cosmological model. The main purpose of this paper is to study linear perturbations about the orthonormal tetrad frame field adapted to the standard comoving observers in this model. The observational viability of the perturbed model is examined using all available data regarding the cosmic microwave background. The implications of the linearly perturbed modified Cartesian flat model are examined and it is shown that the model is capable of alleviating the $H_0$ tension.

Abstract:Inspired by the similarities between quantum field theory and general relativity, in that each theory encompasses two universal constants and a local symmetry, we set out to construct a non-relativistic theory of quantum mechanics and gravity based upon two assumptions: quantum system remains invariant to local modulus transformation, and physical laws reduce to those of conventional quantum mechanics in small enough region, i.e. a modified version of the equivalence principle. Imposing local modulus symmetry brings a number of changes, including the replacement of the complex conjugate of the wave function by a new scalar function with the same phase but different modulus, and particle momentum operator built on covariant derivative, with a connection of purely imaginary velocity field that is identified as the gravitational escape velocity. Three quantum metric functions are defined to signify the kinematic change of quantum state brought by gravity. The modified equivalence principle enables us to relate the escape velocity field with the quantum metric functions. Equation of motion and field equation that are covariant to local modulus transformation are constructed. New features in these equations offer potential mechanisms to account for the dark energy, the mass discrepancies in the universe, and the quantum state reduction of macroscopic objects.

Local symmetries as constraints on the motion of freely-falling extended bodies

Abstract:Different extended objects can fall in different ways, depending on their internal structures. Some motions are nevertheless impossible, regardless of internal structure. This paper derives universal constraints on extended-body motion, both in Newtonian gravity and in general relativity. In both theories, we identify a weak notion of "local symmetry" which precludes certain force and torque combinations. Local symmetries imply that certain components of a body's quadrupole moment cannot affect its motion. They also imply that some forces arise only in combination with appropriate torques. Many of these symmetries are shown to be determined by the algebraic structure of the tidal tensor. In general relativity, we thus relate qualitative features of extended-body motion to the Petrov type of the spacetime. Doing so shows that local symmetries are in fact ubiquitous. In general relativity, there are at least two in all algebraically-special spacetimes. Some of these are generated by Killing vectors and some by conformal Killing-Yano tensors. However, many local symmetries do not fall into either of these classes.

Uniqueness of Galilean and Carrollian limits of gravitational theories and application to higher derivative gravity

Abstract:We show that the seemingly different methods used to derive non-Lorentzian (Galilean and Carrollian) gravitational theories from Lorentzian ones are equivalent. Specifically, the pre-nonrelativistic and the pre-ultralocal parametrizations can be constructed from the gauging of the Galilei and Carroll algebras, respectively. Also, the pre-ultralocal approach of taking the Carrollian limit is equivalent to performing the ADM decomposition and then setting the signature of the Lorentzian manifold to zero. We use this uniqueness to write a generic expansion for the curvature tensors and construct Galilean and Carrollian limits of all metric theories of gravity of finite order ranging from the $f(R)$ gravity to a completely generic higher derivative theory, the $f(g_{\mu\nu},R_{\mu\nu\sigma \rho},\nabla_{\mu})$ gravity. We present an algorithm for calculation of the $n$-th order of the Galilean and Carrollian expansions that transforms this problem into a constrained optimization problem. We also derive the condition under which a gravitational theory becomes a modification of general relativity in both limits simultaneously.

Nonlocal Massive Gravity from Einstein Gravity

Abstract:We present a top-down construction of a three-dimensional non-local theory of massive gravity. This "Non-Local Massive Gravity" (NLMG) is obtained as the gravitational theory induced by Einstein gravity on a brane inserted in Anti-de Sitter space modified by an overall minus sign. The theory involves an infinite series of increasingly complicated higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the quadratic term coinciding with New Massive Gravity. We obtain an analytic formula for the quadratic action of NLMG and show that its linearized spectrum consists of an infinite tower of positive-energy massive spin-2 modes. We compute the Newtonian potential and show that the introduction of the infinite series of terms makes it behave as $\sim 1/r$ at short distances, as opposed to the logarithmic behavior encountered when the series is truncated at any finite order. We use this and input from brane-world holography to argue that the theory may contain asymptotically flat black hole solutions.

Rethinking the Effective Field Theory formulation of Gravity

Abstract:General relativity is highly successful in explaining a wide range of gravitational phenomena including the gravitational waves emitted by binary systems and the shadows cast by supermassive black holes. From a modern perspective the theory is not fundamental though, but constitutes the lowest order term in an effective field theory description of the gravitational force. As a consequence, the gravitational dynamics should receive corrections by higher-derivative terms. This essay discusses structural aspects associated with these corrections and summarizes their imprint on static, spherically symmetric geometries. Along these lines, we critically reassess the common practice of using local field redefinitions in order to simplify the dynamics at the danger of shifting physics effects into sectors which are beyond the approximation under consideration.

Abstract:We discuss the conditions under which 4D gravity is localized on domain walls in 5D anti-de Sitter spaces. Our approach is based on considering the limits in which the localized gravity decouples. We find that gravity is localized if the wall is located a finite distance from the boundary of the anti-de Sitter space and has a finite tension. In addition, it has to be a $\delta$-function source of gravity.
Non-local effective field theory in general relativity

Abstract:Motivated by known facts about effective field theory and non-Abelian gauge theory, we argue that the post-Newtonian approximation might fail even in the limit of weak fields and small velocities under certain conditions. Namely, the post-Newtonian approximation might break down for wide extended bodies with angular momentum, where angular momentum spans significant spacetime curvature. We construct a novel dimensionless quantity that samples this breakdown, and we evaluate it by means of existing analytical solutions of rotating extended bodies and observational data. We give estimates for galaxies and binary systems, as well as our home in the Cosmos, Laniakea. We thus propose that a novel effective field theory of general relativity is needed to account for the onset of nonlocal angular momentum effetcs, with significant consequences for gravitational physics and cosmology at large.

Abstract:In this paper, it is argued that in gravity theories the local Lorentz group can not be considered as a gauge group in the sense of Yang-Mills theories, the Lorentz connection is not a gauge potential but an artificial force, the inertial force. A genuine gravity theory should be a translation gauge theory, though a unnormal gauge theory. All the three theories of the Geometrical Trinity of Gravity are translation gauge theories. A real gravity theory should get rid of "gauging" Lorentz group. The covariantization of the teleparallel gravity is not necessary physically.
