Abstract:We consider a setting where a bounded set with a piecewise smooth boundary in Euclidean space is identified with a body with a mirror surface, and the billiard in the complement of the set is identified with the dynamics of light rays outside the body in the framework of geometric optics. Abstract:This work is related to billiards and their applications in geometric optics. It is known that perfectly invisible bodies with mirror surface do not exist. It is, therefore, natural to search for bodies that are, in a sense, close to invisible. We introduce a visibility index of a body measuring the mean angle of deviation of incident light rays, and derive a lower estimate for this index. This estimate is a function of the body’s volume and of the minimal radius of a ball containing the body. This result is far from being final and opens a possibility for further research.

Abstract:We consider a body in a parallel flow of non-interacting particles. The interaction of particles with the body is perfectly elastic. We introduce the notions of a body of zero resistance, a body that leaves no trace, and an invisible body, and prove that all such bodies do exist.

Abstract:In this paper the authors report that perfect invisibility cloaking could be achieved in a medium designed by a non-Euclidean conformal transformation. Wave behaviors could be controlled as well as the cloaking device configured by the general Euclidean approach dealing with the full Maxwell's equations. The cloaking medium proposed here is totally isotropic and can work in waves without the geometry and polarization limits; thus it is very promising for applications to build a device to hide large objects.

Abstract:Invisibility cloaking based on optical transformation involves materials singularity at the branch cut points. Many interesting optical devices, such as the Eaton lens, also require planar media index singularities in their implementation. We show a method to transmute two singularities simultaneously into harmless topological defects formed by anisotropic permittivity and permeability tensors. Numerical simulation is performed to verify the functionality of the transmuted conformal cloak consisting of two kissing Maxwell fish eyes.

Abstract:We consider the problem of mirror invisibility for plane sets. Given a circle and a finite number of unit vectors (defining the directions of invisibility) such that the angles between them are commensurable with $\pi$, for any $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists a set invisible in the chosen directions that contains the circle and is contained in its $\varepsilon$-neighborhood. This set is the disjoint union of infinitely many domains with piecewise smooth boundary.

Abstract:The discovery of unidirectional invisibility and its broadband realization in optical media satisfying spatial Kramers-Kronig relations are important landmarks of non-Hermitian photonics. We offer a precise characterization of a higher-dimensional generalization of this effect and find sufficient conditions for its realization in the scattering of scalar waves in two and three dimensions and electromagnetic waves in three dimensions. More specifically, given a positive real number $\alpha$ and a continuum of unit vectors $\Omega$, we provide explicit conditions on the interaction potential (or the permittivity and permeability tensors of the scattering medium in the case of electromagnetic scattering) under which it displays perfect (non-approximate) invisibility whenever the incident wavenumber $k$ does not exceed $\alpha$ (i.e., $k\in(0,\alpha]$) and the direction of the incident wave vector ranges over $\Omega$. A distinctive feature of our approach is that it allows for the construction of potentials and linear dielectric media that display perfect directional invisibility in a finite frequency domain.

Abstract:We consider the problem of camouflaging for bodies with specular surface in the framework of geometric optics. The index of visibility introduced in [Plakhov 2017] measures the mean deviation of light rays incident on the body's surface. We study the problem of minimal visibility index for bodies with fixed volume contained in the unit sphere. This problem is reduced to a special vector-valued problem of optimal mass transfer, which is solved partly analytically and partly numerically. This paper is a continuation of the study started in [Plakhov 2009], [Plakhov 2017], and [Plakhov and Roshchina 2011].

Exterior Optical Cloaking and Illusions by Using Active Sources: a Boundary Element Perspective

Abstract:Recently, it was demonstrated that active sources can be used to cloak any objects that lie outside the cloaking devices [F. Guevara Vasquez, G. W. Milton, and D. Onofrei, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 073901 (2009)]. Here, we propose that active sources can create illusion effects so that an object outside the cloaking device can be made to look like another object. Invisibility is a special case in which the concealed object is transformed to a volume of air. From a boundary element perspective, we show that active sources can create a nearly "silent" domain which can conceal any objects inside and at the same time make the whole system look like an illusion of our choice outside a virtual boundary. The boundary element method gives the fields and field gradients, which can be related to monopoles and dipoles, on continuous curves which define the boundary of the active devices. Both the cloaking and illusion effects are confirmed by numerical simulations.
Virtual Mirrors: Non-Line-of-Sight Imaging Beyond the Third Bounce

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging methods are capable of reconstructing complex scenes that are not visible to an observer using indirect illumination. However, they assume only third-bounce illumination, so they are currently limited to single-corner configurations, and present limited visibility when imaging surfaces at certain orientations. To reason about and tackle these limitations, we make the key observation that planar diffuse surfaces behave specularly at wavelengths used in the computational wave-based NLOS imaging domain. We call such surfaces virtual mirrors. We leverage this observation to expand the capabilities of NLOS imaging using illumination beyond the third bounce, addressing two problems: imaging single-corner objects at limited visibility angles, and imaging objects hidden behind two corners. To image objects at limited visibility angles, we first analyze the reflections of the known illuminated point on surfaces of the scene as an estimator of the position and orientation of objects with limited visibility. We then image those limited visibility objects by computationally building secondary apertures at other surfaces that observe the target object from a direct visibility perspective. Beyond single-corner NLOS imaging, we exploit the specular behavior of virtual mirrors to image objects hidden behind a second corner by imaging the space behind such virtual mirrors, where the mirror image of objects hidden around two corners is formed. No specular surfaces were involved in the making of this paper.

Abstract:The concept of an invisibility cloak is a fixture of science fiction, fantasy, and the collective imagination. However, a real device that could hide an object from sight in visible light from absolutely any viewpoint would be extremely challenging to build. The main obstacle to creating such a cloak is the coupling of the electromagnetic components of light, which would necessitate the use of complex materials with specific permittivity and permeability tensors. Previous cloaking solutions have involved circumventing this obstacle by functioning either in static (or quasi-static) fields where these electromagnetic components are uncoupled or in diffusive light scattering media where complex materials are not required. In this paper, we report concealing a large-scale spherical object from human sight from three orthogonal directions. We achieve this result by developing a three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous polyhedral transformation and a spatially invariant refractive index discretization that considerably reduce the coupling of the electromagnetic components of visible light. This approach allows for a major simplification in the design of 3D invisibility cloaks, which can now be created at a large scale using homogeneous and isotropic materials.

Abstract:We extend the design of radially symmetric three-dimensional invisibility cloaks through transformation optics to cloaks with a surface of revolution. We derive the expression of the transformation matrix and show that one of its eigenvalues vanishes on the inner boundary of the cloaks, while the other two remain strictly positive and bounded. The validity of our approach is confirmed by finite edge-elements computations for a non-convex cloak of varying thickness.

Abstract:An invisibility cloak that can hide an arbitrary object external to the cloak itself has not been devised before. In this Letter, we introduce a novel way to design a remote cloaking device that makes any object located at a certain distance invisible. This is accomplished using multi-folded transformation optics to remotely generate a hidden region around the object that no field can penetrate and that does not disturb the far-field scattering electromagnetic field. As a result, any object in the hidden region can stay in position or move freely within that region and remain invisible. Our idea is further extended in order to design a remote illusion optics that can transform any arbitrary object into another one. Unlike other cloaking methods, this method would require no knowledge of the details of the object itself. The proposed multi-folded transformation optics will be crucial in the design of remote devices in a variety of contexts.

Abstract:The illumination problem is a popular topic in recreational mathematics: In a mirrored room, is every region illuminable from every point in the region? So-called \enquote{unilluminable rooms} are related to \enquote{trapped sets} in inverse scattering, and to billiards with divided phase space in dynamical systems. In each case, a billiard with a semi-ellipse has always been put forward as the standard counterexample: namely the Penrose room, the Livshits billiard, and the Bunimovich mushroom respectively. In this paper, we construct a large class of planar billiard obstacles, not necessarily featuring ellipses, that have dark regions, hidden sets, or a divided phase space. The main result is that for any convex set $\mathcal{H}$, we can construct a convex, everywhere differentiable billiard table $K$ (at any distance from $\mathcal{H}$) such that trajectories leaving $\mathcal{H}$ always return to $\mathcal{H}$ after one reflection. This billiard generalises the Bunimovich mushroom. As corollaries, we give more general answers to the illumination problem and the trapped set problem. We use recent results from nonsmooth analysis and convex function theory, to ensure that the result applies to all convex sets.

A Third Way to Cloak an Object: Cover-Up with A Background Object

Abstract:Based on a space folding transformation, we propose a new way to hide an object in full space, namely, to cover-up the scattering of the hidden object with the scattering of a background object so that only the scattering of the background object can be detected by an outside observer and the hidden object disappears electromagnetically (a very weak "ghost image" or perturbation may appear inside the strong background object image in an experiment). The present method is essentially different from previous methods of cloaking an object, namely, the optically isolated cloak and the scattering cancellation cloak, and thus provide a third way to cloak an object. Unlike all the previous methods of cloaking, the present full-space omni-directional invisibility simultaneously has the following features: (i) the hidden object can "see" the outside world without being detected; (H) the cloak can still work when some characteristics (e.g., shape and medium) of the hidden object change; and (Hi) there is no need to know the information of the incident wave in advance. The present work furthers efforts to achieve invisibility and conceal an object in a real environment in full space.
