Abstract:The discovery of unidirectional invisibility and its broadband realization in optical media satisfying spatial Kramers-Kronig relations are important landmarks of non-Hermitian photonics. We offer a precise characterization of a higher-dimensional generalization of this effect and find sufficient conditions for its realization in the scattering of scalar waves in two and three dimensions and electromagnetic waves in three dimensions. More specifically, given a positive real number $\alpha$ and a continuum of unit vectors $\Omega$, we provide explicit conditions on the interaction potential (or the permittivity and permeability tensors of the scattering medium in the case of electromagnetic scattering) under which it displays perfect (non-approximate) invisibility whenever the incident wavenumber $k$ does not exceed $\alpha$ (i.e., $k\in(0,\alpha]$) and the direction of the incident wave vector ranges over $\Omega$. A distinctive feature of our approach is that it allows for the construction of potentials and linear dielectric media that display perfect directional invisibility in a finite frequency domain.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve broadband directional invisibility in optical media. Specifically, the authors provide an accurate characterization method for the sufficient conditions to achieve this effect in scalar - wave scattering in two - and three - dimensional spaces and in three - dimensional electromagnetic - wave scattering. They are concerned with how to make the scattering medium exhibit a perfect (not approximate) invisibility effect within a specific range of directions when the given incident wave number \(k\) does not exceed a certain positive real number \(\alpha\). ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Conditions for broadband directional invisibility**: - Given a positive real number \(\alpha\) and a series of unit vectors \(\Omega\), the authors provide specific conditions for the scattering potential (or the dielectric constant and magnetic permeability tensors in electromagnetic scattering) such that when the incident wave number \(k\) does not exceed \(\alpha\) and the incident wave vector direction is within \(\Omega\), the scattering medium can exhibit a perfect directional invisibility effect. 2. **Multidimensional extension**: - The authors explore the multidimensional extension of the one - way invisibility effect known in one dimension and propose the conditions for achieving broadband directional invisibility in two - and three - dimensional spaces. 3. **Specific conditions**: - For scalar - wave scattering, the authors give specific conditions for the scattering potential to achieve invisibility within a given wave number range \(R\) and a set of incident directions \(\Omega\). - For electromagnetic - wave scattering, the authors consider specific conditions for the relative dielectric constant and relative magnetic permeability tensors to achieve invisibility within a given wave number range \(R\) and a set of incident directions \(\Omega\). ### Main contributions 1. **Accurate conditions**: - Provide accurate conditions for achieving broadband directional invisibility, which are applicable not only to scalar waves but also to electromagnetic waves. 2. **Practical applications**: - Through specific examples, show how to construct a scattering medium with gain and loss regions to achieve broadband directional invisibility. 3. **Combination of theory and experiment**: - The paper not only provides theoretical derivations but also discusses the possibility of experimental implementation, especially the influence of frequency dispersion on achieving broadband directional invisibility. ### Formula explanations - **Scattering amplitude condition**: \[ f(\mathbf{k}_s, \mathbf{k}_i)=0 \quad \text{for} \quad k \in R \quad \text{and} \quad \hat{\mathbf{k}}_i \in \Omega \] This condition indicates that within the given wave number range \(R\) and the set of incident directions \(\Omega\), the scattering amplitude is zero, that is, the invisibility effect is achieved. - **Fourier transform condition**: \[ \tilde{v}(\mathbf{p}) = 0 \quad \text{for} \quad \hat{\mathbf{u}} \cdot \mathbf{p} \leq \alpha \] This condition indicates that within a specific momentum - space region, the Fourier transform of the scattering potential is zero, which is one of the key conditions for achieving invisibility. ### Conclusion Through accurate mathematical and physical analysis, this paper provides a theoretical framework for achieving broadband directional invisibility and verifies its feasibility through specific examples. This provides an important theoretical basis for future experimental research and practical applications.
