Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSB) have received increasing attention as a next-generation energy storage technology due to their potential in delivering superior energy density, power density and safety compared to commercial Li-ion batteries. One of the main challenges limiting their practical implementation is the rapid capacity decay caused by the loss of contact between cathode active material and solid electrolyte upon cycling. Here we use the promising high voltage, low-cost spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) as a model system to demonstrate the importance of the cathode microstructure in SSBs. We design Al2O3-coated LNMO particles with a hollow microstructure aimed at suppressing electrolyte decomposition, minimise volume change during cycling and shorten the Li-diffusion pathway to achieve maximum cathode utilisation and improve areal capacity. When cycled with a Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte and a Li-In anode, we demonstrate capacity retention above 70% after 100 cycles with an active material loading of 27 mg/cm2 (2.2 mAh/cm2) at a current density of 0.8 mA/ cm2.

Abstract:The semi-solid flow battery is one of the promising energy storage technologies in the future energy systems, especially for the applications that require high energy densities. Compared to the other redox flow batteries, the semi-solid flow battery provides a higher solubility of active material and relatively higher voltage window by employing the suspension of active lithium materials and conductive additive, which can offer around 5-20 times greater volumetric capacity. In this regard, its energy density is no longer limited by the solubility, but rather the allowed fraction of active lithium material solids in the flowable suspension. Some previous studies have attempted to optimize the proportion of active lithium material solids and conductive additive to balance the trade-off between the conductivity and viscosity of the suspension. However, few of them considered the influence of the particle sizes of the active lithium materials and conductive additive. Considering that the particle sizes can have significant impacts on the percolated conductive network and rheological properties of the electrolyte suspension, their effects on the performance of the semi-solid flow battery are explored in the present study. Specifically, different particle sizes of active lithium materials and conductive additive are prepared, respectively, based on the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (LNCM)-based suspensions for the semi-solid flow battery. The resistance and electrochemical performance, as well as the rheological properties are investigated through single-cell experiments. Furthermore, the stabilities of the suspension with varying particle sizes are also investigated in the present study.
Optimization of slurry stability for lithium ion battery

Abstract:The effect of the mixing process, solid content, viscosity of slurry and stabilizer on the stability of lithium ion battery slurry was studied by the stability tester, paste viscosity meter and other test methods. The results show that the CMC(carboxyl methyl cellulose) with higher degree of substitution and viscosity is helpful to improve the stability of the battery slurry. To achieve the best performance of slurry stability for anode formula of A1, the optimized mixing process is high viscosity mixing process; the optimized CMC is B; the optimized solid content is 46%; the optimized slurry viscosity is 4 000 m Pa·s.

Abstract:SiO, with a high theoretical specific capacity and acceptable volume variation, is considered one of the most promising next-generation anode materials. However, there is limited research on the effect of SiO particle size distribution on the electrochemical performance of LIBs. In this study, we investigated the impact of the ratio of submicron particles (0.1 mu m to 1 mu m) on the electrochemical performance. It found that a combination of micron and submicron particles with the ratio of submicron particles (RoS) in processed SiO at around 90 % resulted in optimal enhanced capacity and cycling stability, while the remaining 10 % of micron particles mitigate the side reactions caused by excessive surface area. This work is believed to provide a new perspective for inspiring longspan life SiO-based LIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium slurry flow battery represents a promising energy storage technology that combines high energy, affordable price, long life, easy maintenance and improved safety. Catholyte is a key component of lithium slurry flow battery, and its charge transport properties and rheological behaviors show a major influence on the electrochemical storage performances of lithium slurry battery. Herein, catholytes based on LiFePO4 cathode particles with different low-dimensional nanostructures (i.e., 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanorods and 2D nanosheets) were prepared to study the dimensional impacts on the electronic conductivity and rheological behaviors of the catholytes. Highest electronic conductivities of the three catholytes were measured at a LiFePO4 mass content of 20 wt.% regardless of particle dimension. The catholytes prepared by 2D nanosheets showed the maximum static viscosity and yield stress because of their smaller sizes. Furthermore, it also demonstrated much improved electrochemical storage performance in a lithium slurry flow battery, by reversibly outputting a discharge specific capacity of >150 mAh g−1 in an intermittent test and stably operating for over 70 h in a continuous flow model. This work sheds lights on reasonable design of catholytes towards practical realization of high-performance lithium slurry flow batteries.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the rheology of electrode slurries for lithium-ion batteries is critical both for improving their manufacturing efficiency and for achieving desirable battery performance. Here, we show drastic "slurry-preparation-dependent" rheology in an anode slurry for lithium-ion batteries, focusing on the behaviour of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is the most popular dispersant for graphite particles in anode slurries. Slurry preparation with dry-state mixing, where water is added to a dry mixture of graphite and CMC powder, results in much higher viscosity, yield stress, and elastic modulus than those achieved with conventional wet-state mixing, where graphite is added to a CMC solution. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy reveals strange CMC "clumps" formed among the graphite particles in the slurry prepared with dry-state mixing. We attribute the increases in viscosity, yield stress, and elastic modulus for the slurries prepared with dry-state mixing to these clumps of CMC, which can enhance the adhesion between graphite particles and thereby constrain their motion. We also show that pre-shearing irreversibly decreases viscosity, yield stress, and elastic modulus, suggesting that the clumps of CMC are irreparably broken down by applied shear. The influence of the slurry preparation method on the rheological properties of anode slurries has not received attention in previous studies. Hence, we believe that our results might provide new strategies for controlling the rheology of the anode slurry in the manufacturing process for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The electrode fabrication process, i.e., mixing the particles of active material and conductive additive in a binder solution, casting and drying, and calendering, play an important role in the electrode microstructure and electrochemical performance of lithium-ion (LiB) batteries. In this study, we demonstrate the influence of the solvent added to the graphite-based anode slurry during processing, and then investigate the synergistic effect of calendering on electrode morphology, coating density, and electrochemical behavior for use in high-performance LiB. The dispersion state of the electrode particles and the amount of effective mass charged per unit volume are strongly influenced by the amount of solvent added to the slurry. We have verified the uniformity and stability of the slurry prepared from aqueous graphite electrodes and found that it also has a remarkable effect on the electrode microstructure and electrochemical performance, which is synergistic with the help of calendering. The precision of this work could enable researchers to fabricate their own high-quality lithium-ion battery electrodes at laboratory scale and with high reproducibility.

Abstract:The manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) cathodes typically employs poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as a binder. This work aims to demonstrate the impact of mixing procedures on rheological properties of battery slurry and the electrochemical performance of the coated cathode. Key factors like solid content, mixing speed, and duration significantly impact the slurry preparation for LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC 622), which in turn affects coating quality. The initial assessment of rheological and electrochemical data suggests a correlation between mixing parameters like shear viscosity, storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and the electrochemical performance of the coating. This correlation is further fortified by analyzing the coating's physical appearance and investigating surface morphology, potentially bolstering the correlation between rheological findings and electrochemical performance. The ideal electrode is fabricated using 1.5 wt% binder, is achieved with a slurry prepared with relatively high solid content at low mixing speed and mixing time, resulting in approximately 80% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1C in a full cell configuration. This study lays a foundation for enhanced comprehension and optimization, benefits both researchers and industry professionals.

Temperature-dependent rheological behavior of cathode slurry for lithium-ion battery under steady and dynamic tests

Abstract:The rheological property of cathode slurry is commonly influenced by coating speed and mixing temperature, thereby leading to its storage stability and coating uniformity. In this study, the effect of the temperature of slurry on the rheological behaviors is investigated under various shear rates and temperatures based on steady and dynamic tests as well as theoretical models. In the flow experiments, the thixotropic behavior of the slurry is observed at all temperatures tested, and it is reduced with the increase in temperature. The experimental data is captured well by rheological models, and the model parameters are evaluated under the combined effects of shearing and temperature, resulting in two generalized state equations for the description of the flow properties of the slurry. In addition, microstructural rearrangement and polymeric entanglement at high temperatures cause viscosity and modulus to change, giving rise to complex rheological behavior in creep and oscillatory shear. Compared with slurry at 25 and 40 °C, both storage and loss moduli are dependent on oscillatory strain in the range of 0.1–1000% at 65 °C. The difference in characteristic strain corresponding to yielding and strain stiffening behavior is only observed at high temperatures, whereas relaxation times were independent of temperature in the oscillatory shear test. Understanding the effect of the temperature of slurry on rheological behaviors will be useful for improving the manufacturing efficiency of electrodes.

Abstract:The rheological properties of electrode slurry are mainly influenced by the concentration, which further affects the Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) quality and manufacturing processes. In this work, various methods including steady-state shear, creep, rheological model fitting, hysteresis loop, and small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) measurement were employed to investigate the concentration-dependent rheological behaviors of slurry, in particular its yield stress, thixotropy, and viscoelasticity. Results show that the difference in yield stress obtained from varying methods is observed, in which the yield stresses measured by the SAOS test are closer to the steady-state value due to its advantage that non-destructive property at small deformations only causes minimum disturbance. The improvement of slurry concentration enhances the bonding strength between particles, thereby resulting in an increase of yield stress and thixotropy, and a decrease of the time scale of transient behavior during the creep process. In oscillatory shear measurement, both storage and loss modulus are concentration-dependent, while yielding and strain stiffening corresponding to critical strains exhibit concentration-independent. In addition, the increase in concentration leads to a more pronounced strain stiffening behavior and a lower characteristic frequency as well as a longer relaxation time. Understanding the relationship between concentration and rheological behaviors will be helpful for material design, preparation, and production in different stages.

Abstract:The rheological properties of the electrode slurry significantly influence the manufacturing process of solid-state batteries (SSBs), affecting coating quality and the resulting cathode microstructure. The correlation between slurry attributes and final electrode characteristics is analyzed using particle size and solid content as key metrics. The performed coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations closely fit experimental viscosity, indicating the model's suitability for predicting slurry behavior. Then the microstructural properties of the dry and calendered electrodes are calibrated with the experiments. The simulation workflow is fitted completely using only two sets of force fields, one for the slurry and the other for the dry state of the electrode. The effective electronic conductivities are contingent on the particle size, without showing significant limitation on cathode rate capabilities. This comprehensive study highlights the intricate interplay between slurry solid content, microstructure design, and manufacturing processes in optimizing SSB performance. Consistent slurry characteristics are crucial for uniform electrode coating while optimizing particle size and solid content improves electrode porosity. The findings provide valuable insights for enhancing SSB design and manufacturing processes for the adaptation of already established scaling up technologies.

Abstract:We aimed to determine the relationship between surface chemistry and the rheological properties of silicon anode slurries in lithium-ion batteries. To accomplish this, we investigated the use of various binders such as PAA, CMC/SBR, and chitosan as a means to control particle aggregation and improve the flowability and homogeneity of the slurry. Additionally, we utilized zeta potential analysis to examine the electrostatic stability of the silicon particles in the presence of different binders, and the results indicated that the conformations of the binders on the silicon particles can be influenced by both neutralization and the pH conditions. Furthermore, we found that the zeta potential values served as a useful metric for evaluating binder adsorption and particle dispersion in the solution. We also conducted three-interval thixotropic tests (3ITTs) to examine the structural deformation and recovery characteristics of the slurry, and the results demonstrated that these properties vary depending on the strain intervals, pH conditions, and chosen binder. Overall, this study emphasized the importance of taking into account surface chemistry, neutralization, and pH conditions when assessing the rheological properties of the slurry and coating quality for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The synthesis of solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and the design of electrode interface with preferable compatibility are critical to realize the bulk-type application of all-solid-state batteries. In order to realize the superior electrochemical performance, argyrodite Li6PS5Cl is a promising solid electrolyte in all-solid-state batteries due to high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. Meanwhile, the solution reprecipitation is a valid process providing intimate ionic contact between electrodes and electrolytes to mitigate the interface incompatibility. Here, a wet-slurry process by dispersing active material (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2), solid electrolyte (Li6PS5Cl), binder (ethyl cellulose) and conductive additives (carbon black) in anhydrous ethanol is developed to fabricate cathode. The effect of different contents of the binder in the composite cathodes on the electrochemical performance is investigated. The all-solid-state battery with a composite cathode containing 1 wt% of ethyl cellulose shows a reversible discharge capacity of 111.7 mAh g(-1) at 30 degrees C and its capacity retention is approximately 89.7% after 100 cycles. This work demonstrates that the fast ion migration and stable interface between active particles and solid electrolyte enabled by optimum content of chemically compatible binder are critical to the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A special six‐stage constant current (SS‐CC) charging protocol for lithium slurry battery is developed based on Li+ diffusion coefficient under different state of charges. Comparing with other charging protocols commonly used in lithium‐ion batteries, such as constant current–constant voltage, the LSB charged by SS‐CC protocol not only shows higher energy efficiency, but also enhances cycle stability. With flowable slurry electrode architecture, lithium slurry battery (LSB) has the advantages of high energy density and independent energy and power, which can be used as an excellent energy storage device. However, its practical application is still hindered by multiple factors, including prolonged ion/electron passage, serious interfacial parasitic reactions, low energy efficiency, et al. The special electrode structure can influence the charge percolation pathway, reduce the apparent Li+ diffusion coefficient (DLi+ ), and further impact the battery performances. Herein, a special six‐stage constant current (SS‐CC) charging protocol for LSB is developed based on DLi+ under different state of charges, that is, higher charging rate at larger DLi+ . Comparing with other charging protocols commonly used in lithium‐ion batteries such as constant current‐constant voltage, the LSB charged by SS‐CC protocol not only shows higher energy efficiency, but also enhanced cycle stability. This is attributed to the better synergy between lithium desertion and plating, which kinetically reduces the parasitic reactions such as solid–electrolyte interphase accumulation, dead lithium, or dendrite generation. It is believed that this charging protocol design strategy can also be applied in other LSB systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the effects of both poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/carbon black (CB) ratio ( m PVDF : m CB ) and mixing time t on the dispersion mechanism of the cathode slurry of lithium-ion battery (LIB). The dispersion mechanism is deduced from the electrochemical, morphological and rheological properties of the cathode slurry by using Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and rheology methods, respectively. From the perspective of EIS method, static simulation models are established in COMSOL Multiphysics software, meanwhile, the simulated results are used to verify the correctness of the electrochemical properties of the cathode slurry. As a result, the following conclusions are able to be obtained. Firstly, in the case of the mass ratio m PVDF : m CB =5:10, LiCoO 2 particles are completely coated by the mixture of CB and PVDF to form a stable polymer gel structure. Higher or lower m PVDF : m CB leads to the larger impedance and worse dispersion status for the cathode slurry. Secondly, when t =6 min, a good gel-like conductive network structure is formed by coating the thinner evenly dispersed CB-PVDF double layer around LiCoO 2 particles. Finally, a strategy regarding to both m PVDF : m CB and t in experimental scale is proposed, which has the capability of improving the performance of LIB.

Abstract:In depth understanding the evaluation behaviors of conductive percolation networks and rheological properties is important for developing high performance suspension electrodes. Herein, three kinds of conductive additives, Ketjen Black, multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets, are utilized to systematically investigate the impacts of dimension and content on the rheological and electrochemical properties of LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 suspensions. The percolation threshold ranges are found to be 0.5–0.6 wt.%, 0.2–0.3 wt.% and 2.3–2.4 wt.% for KB, MWCNT and GNP-based suspensions, respectively. The inflection points for electronic conductivities of different conductive additives based suspensions are situated at 1.0 wt.%, 0.5 wt.% and 2.5 wt.%, respectively, and the static viscosities and yield stresses of KB and MWNCT-based suspensions possess the same inflection points as those of electronic conductivities. Nevertheless, GNP-based suspensions deliver a distinguishing tendency due to their relatively poor dispersion. Electrochemical characterizations indicate that 1.5 wt.% KB-based suspension delivers superior cycle and rate performances. Especially, the successful application of LMFP suspension to lithium slurry battery was demonstrated by a relatively stable cycle over 230 h. Our findings will be helpful for the development of lithium slurry batteries with robust conductive networks and high energy density.

Effects of the mixing sequence on the graphite dispersion and resistance of lithium-ion battery anodes

Abstract:The performance of lithium-ion battery electrodes is influenced by particle dispersion in the slurry used for their production. In this study, we elucidate the effects and mechanism of the binder mixing sequence on the characteristics of the slurry used in the production of negative electrodes. Therefore, we optimize the preparation of the negative electrode slurry by evaluating the electrode characteristics resulting from changing the binder mixing sequence. During the preparation of the electrode slurry, the state of the adsorption of the binder to the particle changes when the sequence of binder addition is changed. The change in the adsorption state of the binder influences the particle dispersion in the slurry, rheological properties of the slurry, and packing characteristics of the particles. Under the influence of the aforementioned changes, electrodes possessing identical compositions exhibited different performances. The slurry in which the particles were dispersed produced an electrode possessing a low volume-resistivity, whereas the slurry in which the particles were agglomerated produced an electrode with a high volume-resistivity. Evidently, controlling the adsorption state of the binder by altering the binder mixing sequence is essential for fabricating electrodes possessing a low volume-resistivity.

Abstract:ABSTRACT:Lithium-rich cathode materials have become one of the most promising cathode materials for high-energy-density lith-ium-ion batteries. However, the electrochemical properties of lithium-rich cathode materials are highly sensitive to the local struc-ture in the bulk and at the surface, which is closely associated with the synthesis process. In the present work, we provided new in-sights into the structural properties and corresponding electrochemical performance of Li1. 2x Mn0. 54 Ni0. 13 Co0. 13 O2 materials as a func-tion of x ( Li content) from a synthesis point of view. The spinel and Li2 CO3 species in the bulk and at the surface arising from the varying amounts of lithium ions would result in the local compositional change within the as-prepared particles and provoke a change in the voltage-capacity profile as determined by electrochemical analysis, XRD, Raman, and XPS observations. Our results re-vealed that the as-prepared sample with 5% excess of Li in molar ratio utilized for the material synthesis showed better electrochem-ical performance in terms of discharge capacity ( ~270 mAh/g) and voltage in comparison to other as-prepared samples with differ-ent Li contents.

Abstract:Lithium-substituted LixMn2O4 (x = 0.98, 1.03, 1.08) spinel samples were synthesized by solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the prepared samples have a spinel structure with a space group of Fd (3) over bar m. The cubic lattice parameter was determined from least-squares fitting of the XRD data. Li0.03Mn2O4 shows high capacity at both low and high current densities, while Li1.08Mn2O4 shows good cycling performance but relatively low capacity when cycled at both room and elevated temperatures. A variety of electrochemical methods were employed to investigate the electrochemical properties of these series of spinel LixMn2O4.

Abstract:Recently, many research groups have reported the effect of lithium content on the structure and electrochemical performance of cathode material, su ch as layered structure LiNi 0.5Mn0.5O2, spinal structure LiMn2O4 and also olivine family member, LiCoPO 4[1-4]. Meanwhile, Li 3PO4 also worked as a good SEI film on the cathode surface which may prevent the contact betwe en electrolyte and LiCoPO 4 avoiding side reactions between them at high charge and discharge voltage. All of t he reported results showed that appropriate excess lit hium could contribute to the electrochemical performance of the above cathode materials to some extent for diff erent mechanisms. In this article, we have reported the synthesis and electrochemical characterization of LiMnPO 4 material prepared via a citric acid-assisted sol–gel route w ithout any additional treatment, investigated and discusse d th effects of the amount of Li relative to the pristin e composition LiMnPO4 on the structure and electrochemical properties for the first time.
