Abstract:The thixotropic properties of electrode slurry used in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries affect the coating processes. Understanding the relationship between its structural parameters and microstructure evolution will be helpful for slurry preparation and coating processes. In this work, a structural kinetics constitutive model is proposed to describe the thixotropy of slurry, in which the structural parameter λ\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\lambda$$\end{document} is utilized to assess the evolution of the microstructure. The results show that the proposed model is in good agreement with experimental data for steady-state flow, and the degree of structure can be well described by the structural parameter λ\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\lambda$$\end{document} for different cathodes slurries, indicating that coarse Li(Ni,Mn,Co)O2 (NMC) powder forms an extremely brittle network structure with no significant yield stress, while fine LiFePO4 (LFP) powder presents a robust network structure. Besides, the strength of the structure is distinctly improved by adding the high-molecular polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as binder and carbon black as conductive agent.
