Abstract:LAST MONTH , a group of senior scientists from Eli Lilly & Co. started working out of an office in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. Rather than do research themselves, they are there to provide scientific leadership to the Chinese firms that Lilly has tasked with a steadily expanding range of R&D activities. “Large multinational drug companies conduct research in China either by building their own brick-and-mortar R&D centers or by building relationships with contract research organizations,” says Robert W. Armstrong, a Lilly vice president in charge of global external R&D. “We are in the second camp.” Non-U.S. pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis, AstraZeneca, Roche, and GlaxoSmithKline, have built or are in the process of building their own R&D centers in China. U.S. drug firms such as Lilly, Pfizer, and Merck & Co. have generally opted to take advantage of China’s scientists by collaborating with third parties there. Abstract:It presents the gap of pharmaceutical RD between the world's leading companies and Chinese companies. It argues that Chinese pharmaceutical companies can not be compared with the leading companies in resources investment. The successful experience of some Japan companies and west companies showed that good innovation management could offset this gap. Abstract:IN A MEETING ROOM in a building resembling a residential home in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park , Li Chen and John Choi describe the business plan of their new company. Called Hua Medicine, the firm will launch breakthrough drugs within four years, they predict. Hua will manufacture the compounds and sell them with its own sales force. It will also license its internally developed drugs to multinational companies. Yet right now, Hua is a modest operation that employs eight people. Hua doesn’t have an R&D lab yet, let alone a manufacturing facility. It operates in a loaned building formerly used by the administrators of the industrial park. Most entrepreneurs excel at talking convincingly about their new ventures. Abstract:This study takes the "New Silicon Valley" Hangzhou to discuss the relationship about the resources and development. The resource-based view provided a systematic approach for analyzing the role of Hangzhou in terms of its potential sustained competitive advantage in technology development. In this study, we suggest that each resource can enhance the technology development, but the potential of each resource should not be viewed in isolation. Two intervening variables are talents and capabilities. We not only integrate three resources, but also study at their interface. Thus, we put forward eight propositions include the interplay, isolated impact and combined affect.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To provide reference further development of hospital pharmacy in China. METHODS:Innovative pharmaceutical care method of hospital pharmacy was summarized in 32 medical institutions from Zhejiang area,including 18 third-level hospitals,8 special hospitals,6 third-level TCM hospitals and integrated traditional and western medicine hospitals. RE-SULTS & CONCLUSIONS:Medical institutions provide innovative pharmaceutical service to guarantee the safety of drug use,ex-pand medical service space,enrich the connotation of pharmaceutical care,and provide reference for pharmaceutical care in medi-cal institutions of other regions,such as establishing satellite pharmacy of anesthesiology department,opening outpatient depart-ment of pharmaceutical care (elderly comprehensive evaluation and multidisciplinary outpatient pharmaceutical care,anticoagula-tion consultation outpatient department and endocrine consultation outpatient department managed by pharmacists,comprehensive pharmacy consultation outpatient department,outpatient pharmaceutical care of pharmacy unit mode),formulating pharmaceutical ward round mode under multidisciplinary cooperation,developing clinical pharmaceutical care based on pharmacy scientific re-search(drug monitor,gene detection)and evidence-based medicine.

Expert Opinion on Drug Discovery

Abstract:Introduction: Virtual reality (VR) environments are increasingly being used by researchers in various fields in addition to being increasingly integrated into various areas of human life, ranging from videogames to different industrial uses. VR can be used to create interactive and multimodal sensory stimuli and thus offers unique advantages over other computer-based approaches for scientific research and molecular-level applications. Consequently, VR is starting to be used in novel drug development, such as in drug discovery, and rational drug design. Areas covered: In this review, the authors discuss the basic development of VR technology, including the available hardware and software. The latest advances of VR technology in novel drug development are then detailed, and the VR programs that can be applied in relevant studies are highlighted. Expert opinion: VR will lead to a revolution in pharmaceutical development. However, there are still obstacles to the successful and extensive application of VR to drug development, including the demand for further improvements to the available hardware and software and the various limitations described with regard to accuracy and precision. As technology continues to improve, the barriers to the widespread adoption of VR will diminish and VR technologies will play an increasingly important role in novel drug development.

Abstract:We discuss a famous Hi-tech park for biopharmaceutical firms in Shanghai, China, whose formulation and growth are all sponsored by the government. After the background analysis of the biopharmaceutical industry, we focus on this park, known as Pharmacy Valley. With detailed analysis, we believe that although under the intensive support of government, the cooperation network among firms is still far from well set up, the financing channel is under-built, and the aggregation is in the primary stage. For all the firms in Pharmacy Valley, the gap is large on the scale of the industry, innovative capability and industrialisation level compared with multinationals.

Abstract:With the slowing down of the global new drug RD rate,and the increasing cost and the lower returns,China is attracting more interesting because of a growing number of multinational pharmaceutical companies with its cost and resource advantages.China is taking an important and indispensable part in the global new drug RD.However,the backward knowledge,and the lacking of professional drug RD talents have become the bottle neck of Chinese drug innovation capacity as a long period of generic drug history in China.To establish new drug RD training platforms to deliver the advanced knowledge and to train top level professionals who understand the whole chain of the new drug RD is the critical way for China to improve its drug innovation capacity,and become a strong innovative country in drug RD.

Abstract:Rising to the challenge of increased scrutiny of drug quality and safety, seizing the opportunity for development, manufacturing, and distribution of pharmaceuticals for the global network and anticipating the rapid growth of the domestic pharmaceutical market in the years to come, China, with support from the international community, has been making sweeping changes to improve its environment for pharmaceutical R&D. The government, industry, and academia are joining together to improve the regulatory framework, industrial capacity, and human resources that will be needed. A brief summary of these changes is provided in this perspective article with a focus on government efforts, the driving force behind these sweeping changes.

Abstract:As the second largest pharmaceutical market with a great potential for future growth, China has drawn much attention from the global pharmaceutical community. With an increasing government investment in biomedical research, the domestic biopharmaceutical (biotechnological) companies in China are turning their attention to the development of innovative medicines and targeting the global market. To introduce innovative products to Chinese patients sooner, to improve the efficiency of its review and approval processes, and to harmonize its regulatory science with international standards, the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has initiated a series of major changes to its policies and regulations. This paper presents a snapshot of China’s pharmaceutical market, and research and development status, and introduces technical guidelines pertaining to clinical trials and new drug applications. The recent wave of ground-breaking reforms in CFDA’s regulatory science is discussed. Examples of clinical trials and new drug applications are provided throughout the discussion.

Abstract:Long-acting Injectable PLGA microspheres have gained more and more interest and attention in the field of life cycle management of pharmaceutical products due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. So far, a multitude of trial-and-error experiments at lab scale have been used for establishing the correlation relationship between critical process parameters, critical material attributes and critical quality attributes. However, few published studies have elaborated on the development of PLGA microspheres from an industrial perspective. In this review, the scale-up feasibility of translational technologies of PLGA microspheres manufacturing has been evaluated. Additionally, state-of-the-art of technologies and facilities in PLGA development have been summarized. Meanwhile, the industrial knowledge matrix of PLGA microspheres development and research is establishing which provides comprehensive insight for understanding properties of PLGA microspheres as controlled/sustained release vehicle. There is still big gap between fundamental research in academic institute and product development in pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the difference and connection between them should be identified gradually for better understanding of PLGA microspheres development.

Abstract:Research & Development (R&D) plays an increasingly important role in China's pharmaceutical industry. To gain a competitive edge in the global pharmaceutical market, the current national strategy of China forcefully pushes for independent drug innovations. This article investigates the historical, legal, and institutional contexts in which China's drug R&D has evolved. Based on an analysis of the drug R&D evolution and national policies in China, it predicts the future trend of China's policies relevant to drug innovations. This paper helps to understand the impact of national policies on drug R&D in China, which can be used to inform decision-making on investments in China's pharmaceutical market or conducting technology trade and international cooperation with Chinese partners.
