Abstract:In 2014, the Kyushu University Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR) established a program to develop collaborations and harmonization strategies for translational science in the Asia-Pacific region. The program utilized connections between academia, industry and government in Japan to act as hosts to talented medical innovators who can contribute to developing new innovations in the region. The CCTR called 51 participants from ten Asia-Pacific countries to take part in an intensive program to visit facilities on the front line of medical innovation in Japan so that they may take the knowledge back to their countries and make fruitful collaborations between their institutions and Japan counterparts.

Abstract:Purpose Innovation is vital for sustainable regional development. Government is generally not a source of innovation per se, but the authors shows that by establishing and funding an industrial innovation ecosystem, it can create fertile conditions for research institutions to introduce innovative technologies into industry and for industry to introduce its gaps and needs to motivate and direct academic research. This paper aims to present a case study of the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) as a "triple helix" collaboration model engaging Industry-University-Research (IUR) institutions. The authors aim to provide a fresh perspective on constructing innovation ecosystems, promoting value creation and advancing the adoption of industrial technology. Design/methodology/approach Taking JITRI as a case study, this research examines its innovative approaches to interfacing with IUR organizations within China's Yangtze Delta region. The authors propose a multilayered framework where JITRI serves as the core, facilitating the formation of a robust innovation ecosystem with diverse IUR entities. Findings This framework comprises three layers: core, platform and support. JITRI acts as the central nexus, binding these elements together and fostering a cohesive innovation ecosystem. By analyzing the operational mechanisms of the Jiangsu Provincial innovation system, the authors gain valuable insights into how JITRI bridges the gap between academia and industry. This facilitates the efficient commercialization of technologies. The success of the JITRI approach presents a compelling model for emulation by other provincial innovation ecosystems seeking to enhance their innovation capabilities. Research limitations/implications This study enriches the ongoing conversation on innovation ecosystems, proposing novel avenues for further research. However, the field requires continuous monitoring through longitudinal studies. Given the long-term nature of such initiatives, the full impact of this approach might only be realized over several decades. Practical implications JITRI aims to create a robust and innovative provincial innovation ecosystem through its focus on IUR collaboration. This unique approach offers valuable insights and ideas for fostering the development of thriving innovation ecosystems in other provinces. These insights encompass new perspectives on innovation ecosystem development, value creation and industrial advancement. Originality/value This study pioneers the use of the JITRI system as a case study, offering valuable insights with potential application to innovation ecosystems across China and globally.

Abstract:Asia-Pacific is a region of fast growing opportunity for biomedical research and marketing of new health products by pharmaceutical and medical device companies. While national regulatory authorities have the responsibility to ensure timely access to innovative, effective, and safe therapies, many face capacity and resource constraints that limit their ability to guarantee a robust regulatory system capable of licensing and monitoring novel medicines and medical devices, and tackling substandard and falsified products. The region's regulatory landscape is also fragmented with country-specific requirements that create barriers to entry for new health products. To help address these challenges, the Duke-National University of Singapore's (Duke-NUS) Centre of Regulatory Excellence (CoRE) was established in 2014 with the strategic goals to strengthen the region's regulatory agencies through capacity development, regulatory convergence, work sharing, and nurturing networks for leadership and systems innovation. A smart and mature regulatory system in Asia-Pacific is pivotal to promote biomedical innovation and enhance equitable, sustainable access of populations to quality health products that are safe and efficacious.

Abstract:The Asian region has passed a long and rocky road during the past several decades to establish itself as the second leading regional biotech market globally. China has become the second largest pharmaceutical market while Japan holds a strong second position as the global hub for medical devices development and innovation. Pharmaceutical expenditure continues to outpace real GDP growth in most of these countries. The trend is likely to be continued for a decade ahead, driven by a myriad of factors ranging from aging populations, rapidly growing welfare and increased citizen expectations raising demand for novel medicines and technologies. Satisfaction of these unmet needs in terms of supply is coming from the large multinational companies in wealthier among these societies. Domestic born and largely state-owned manufacturing industries continue to play a crucial role in an array of middle-income countries. Global biotech hub of Singapore is hosting over 1.5 times more headquarters of large pharmaceutical companies than Beijing, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong combined together. Japanese Takeda, Astellas, Daiichi Sankyo and Otsuka and Chinese Sinopharm, Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals Corporation, SPH and Yunnan Baiyao are now enlisted in leading Top 25 pharmaceutical companies rankings as per their annual net revenues in 2020-2021. Global industry landscape is evolving with ever more Asian companies obtaining the sharp innovative competitiveness leading development of cutting-edge medical technologies. Asian societies demand for pharmaceuticals and medical services continue to be characterized with unmet needs and striving to increase supply capacities. Financial obstacles of affordability of life saving medicines to the ordinary citizens shall be gradually overcome with an array of reimbursement strategies and extended insurance coverage policies. Observing the broad landscape throughout Asian region, we may witness that optimism in terms of domestic real GDP growth and consecutive biotech industry forecasts remains firmly rooted in years to come. Biosimilars are not a focus of the paper.

Abstract:Authors argue that the technology-based innovation model in China has passed through three stages. The first stage is Secondary innovation. The second stage is Portfolio innovation. The third stage is Total Innovation Management (TIM). Briefly present the construction of TIM as well as the three aspects of TIM: All Elements Innovation (AEI), High Involvement Innovation (HII) and All Time-Space Innovation. Abstract:In recent decades, multinational enterprises (MNEs) have increasingly harnessed local knowledge through various customer involvement practices implemented by their foreign subsidiaries. Our study, using a multi‐informant survey of 230 MNE subsidiaries in China, explores how these subsidiaries manage customer involvement in new product development (NPD). We specifically focus on two practices: using customers as an information source (CIS) or as a co‐developer (CIC). We posit that the two types of customer involvement have distinct effects on a subsidiary's innovation capability, which in turn impacts two critical NPD outcomes: innovativeness and speed to market. Moreover, we suggest that the roles that customers play in CIS and CIC, as well as their contribution to the subsidiary's innovation capability, depend on whether the specific knowledge is derived from the parent headquarters or local partners. Our findings reveal that technological knowledge transfer from the parent headquarters enhances CIS's effect on innovation capability, yet diminishes that of CIC. In contrast, knowledge sharing from local partners exerts the opposite effects. By elucidating the underlying mechanisms and contingencies, our study fosters a deeper understanding of customer involvement in NPD and provides insightful guidance for MNEs seeking to leverage local knowledge for successful innovations in foreign markets.

Innovation Centers in Health Care Delivery Systems: Structures for Success

Abstract:The need to support innovation in health care delivery was prompted by payment reforms and access to digital tools and has been accelerated by the shift to virtual care as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Prior to the pandemic, a growing number of health systems set up innovation centers to focus on creating new services and exploring new business models relevant to value-based care. This is distinct from process improvement or implementation science, and often needs a different set of incentives to succeed within a large organization. We used a national survey to identify a diverse sample of innovation centers, and interviewed leaders to describe their aims, organizational structures, and activities. They all aim to improve patient outcomes and experience while reducing costs, but their strategic focus may differ. The centers also vary in their reporting structure, how they build internal capacity, and how they measure success. We highlight the range of strategies through examples of projects that improve quality, reduce costs, and generate new revenue. While the optimal forms and impact of innovation centers are still emerging, the fiscal pressures and the rapid uptake of digital technologies present opportunities for the redesign of health services in the postpandemic era. The experiences of these centers illustrate a set of approaches to increase any organization's capacity for innovation.

Abstract:In the fast-evolving landscape of business and marketing, Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) have emerged as transformative catalysts, reshaping collaboration dynamics. The innovation hub, like incubators, R&D labs, and impact hubs, designates a physical space dedicated to fostering innovation within an organization or community. Defining an innovation hub proves challenging, as it is often linked to an open co-working space with a stylish design and tools for creative thinking. However, it extends beyond being merely a physical space for idea generation. A well-designed physical space facilitates in-person collaboration, while a digital platform enables global collaboration, transcending geographic constraints. Innovation hubs embody a distinctive entrepreneurial culture marked by a global perspective and values that often prioritize social behavior. Particularly in regions with conservative politics and cultural norms, these hubs can function as a secure environment for embracing culturally unfamiliar behaviors and mindsets. A Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) serves as an all-encompassing structure, empowering organizations to enhance competitiveness through the optimization of processes and the innovation of products and services using innovative digital technologies. Abstract:Taking Thailand Huachiew TCM Hospital as an example, this paper discusses the function of Neo-Schumpeterian theory and its application in the development of TCM Hospital from organization structure, production and cross-industry collaboration. The study finds that, those aspects, including introducing the modern personnel system, exploring new supply channels of Chinese medicine, improving services, expanding the existing business and cooperating with government authorities, Chinese communities as well as education institutions, can accelerate steady development of overseas TCM hospitals. Expansion of overseas TCM hospitals will enhance Chinese culture overseas communication.

Abstract:There is a real need for innovation in health care delivery, as well as in medicine, to address related challenges of access, quality, and affordability through new and creative approaches. Health care environments must foster innovation, not just allowing it but actively encouraging it to happen anywhere and at every level in health care and medicine-from the laboratory, to the operating room, bedside, and clinics. This paper reviews the essential elements and environmental factors important for health-related innovation to flourish in academic health systems.The authors maintain that innovation must be actively cultivated by teaching it, creating "space" for and supporting it, and providing opportunities for its implementation. The authors seek to show the importance of these three fundamental principles and how they can be implemented, highlighting examples from across the country and their own institution.Health innovation cannot be relegated to a second-class status by the urgency of day-to-day operations, patient care, and the requirements of traditional research. Innovation needs to be elevated to a committed endeavor and become a part of an organization's culture, particularly in academic health centers.
