Abstract:Diazo compounds had been widely employed as a class of environment friendly and highly efficient coupling reagents in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bonds insertion reactions.Recently, C-H alkylation of various arenes and heteroarenes has been achieved enormous successes using diazo compounds as the alkylation reagents under a new catalytic model.The recent progress in diazo compounds mediated transition-metal-catalyzed C-H alkylation and tandem C-H alkylation/cyclization is reviewed, including reaction mechanism and synthetic applications.Furthermore, the prospects of this reaction are also discussed.

Abstract:Given alkynyl group is an important functional unit, a variety of efficient methods have been developed to construct alkynyl-containing compounds. Among them, the alkynylative difunctionalization of alkenes is one of the most straightforward and efficient strategies for preparing these compounds and so has made great progress in recent years, including the catalytic asymmetric manner. However, there is no comprehensive review to summarize these studies. This review is aimed at comprehensively summarizing the alkynylative difunctionalization of alkenes, which is presented in terms of alkynylation-initiated and alkynylation-terminated difunctionalizations of alkenes. We hope that this review will help to encourage more researchers to further explore in this field.

Abstract:Visible light promoted difunctionalization of alkynes is reviewed. The difunctionalization reaction is achieved by different reagents. Radicals such as carbon (sp3), carbon (sp2), and other heteroatom (P, S, N, Se, O, and halide) radicals initiated by visible light can undergo radical addition to a carbon-carbon triple bond. Upon further transformation, the desired difunctionalized products are obtained. Some organometallic complexes can be activated by visible light; the difunctionalization of alkynes is catalyzed by these species. Other reagents like 1,3-dipole precursors could also react with alkynes to give difunctionalization products; here, the 1,3-dipole derivatives are obtained by visible light photocatalysis. So far, the strategy has been succeeded in the formation of C–C bonds and C–X bonds. Several valuable chemical skeletons have been constructed under mild conditions. However, high regio- and stereoselectivities in some direct difunctionalization methodologies are yet to be achieved.

This review discloses recent progress in the transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective functionalization of enamides, including the Heck reaction, hydrofunctionalization, and difunctionalization, with a focus on the general scope, current limitations, stereochemical reaction control, and mechanistic aspects.

Abstract:Amide, as a ubiquitous functional group, is essential in various aspects of chemistry and biology. Although the history of studying amide is rich and fruitful, the synthetic application of amide is very limited due to the inertness of amide C–N bond. Recently,significant advances have been achieved towards the nickel-mediated C–N activation of amides. This approach allows a facile generation of acyl-nickel intermediates, and a number of unique transformations have been designed and realized based on the amide C–N bond activation. Focused on the catalytic transformation, this review summarizes and categorizes the recent advances on the synthetic applications of Ni-mediated C–N bond activation of amides.

Abstract:The amino group is one of the most prevalent functional groups present in a wide range of organic molecules, which has been widely applied in various organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals. Alkyl amines could be converted in a single step into Katritzky salts which could serve as alkyl radical precursors to construct C‐C bonds and C‐X bonds via C(sp 3 )‐N cleavage. This deaminative functionalization could be carried out under transition‐metal catalysis, photocatalysis, carbene catalysis or base. In this paper, recent developments in the deaminative functionalization of alkyl amines were covered. This review was categorized into four parts according to the nature of the bond formation. Some representative examples and corresponding reaction mechanisms were also summarized.

Abstract:During the last two decades, impressive advancements have been achieved in transition metal‐catalyzed chelation‐assisted C—H functionalization reaction. While reactions in this field are still dominated by precious 4d or 5d metals (e.g., Pd, Rh, Ir), the 3d base metals (e.g., Ni, Co, Cu, Fe) have made significant headway partially due to their relatively large abundance, low cost, low toxicity as well as their occasionally occurred novel reactivity when compared to their noble cousins. This review will give a comprehensive summary on Ni‐catalyzed functionalization of inert C—H bonds assisted by chelation groups. For clarity, the content is classified by the newly formed chemical bonds, namely C—C, C—N, C—chalcogen and C—halogen bond formation.

Various carboxylic acids and amines could react smoothly with alkenes to give dioxygenation and oxyamidation products, respectively. In the past decade, a multitude of new transformations and new directing groups have been explored, and several recent reviews have discussed directing group approaches for C-H functionalization. This review focuses specifically on the use of monodentate nitrogen-based directing groups published during the past two years, with the aim of covering a body of literature that is complementary to existing reviews.

Abstract:Alkenes are highly valuable materials in organic synthesis, and their three‐component reactions offer a promising method for C‐C bond formation and carbon chain elongation. This approach not only reduces the number of reaction steps but also minimizes waste generation, enabling the preparation of polysubstituted alkanes from simple starting materials. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advancements in this field from 2013 to 2023. We have classified the developments into three main categories: (1) reactions triggered by C‐radicals or heteroatom‐radicals; (2) cascades involving three‐membered ring intermediates; and (3) transformations catalyzed by metals. We will discuss a wide range of reactions that involve diazoium salts, arylhydrazines, acids, aldehydes, 1,3‐dicarbonyls, diazo compounds, amines, malononitriles, diacyl peroxides, ethers, 1,3‐dithiane, arenes, CuSCF3, selectfluor, Et3N•3HF, TBHP, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, CO2, CO, KCl, H2O, and other reagents. These reactions lead to alkylation, arylation, or carbonylation products. We believe that this review will be helpful for future research in this area.

Abstract:The difunctionalization of alkenes represents a powerful tool to incorporate two functional groups into the alkene bones for increasing molecular complexity and has been widely utilizations in chemical synthesis. Upon the catalysis of the green, sustainable, mild photo-/electrochemistry technologies, much attentions have been attracted to the development of new tactics for the transformations of the important alkene and alkane feedstocks driven by C-H radical functionalization. Herein, we summarize recent advances in the photo-/electrocatalytic difunctionalization of alkenes enabled by C-H radical functionalization. We detailedly discuss the substrate scope and the mechanisms of the photo-/electrocatalytic alkene difunctionalization reactions by selecting impressive synthetic examples, which are divided into four sections based on the final terminated step, including oxidative radical-polar crossover coupling, reductive radical-polar crossover coupling, radical-radical coupling, and transition-metal-catalyzed coupling.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, transition-metal catalyzed direct functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds has emerged as an efficient and straightforward strategy for the construction of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds.It provides access to complex molecules via the direct cleavage of C-H bonds without the need of prefunctionalization, rendering this strategy more step-economical and environmentally benign.Recently, tremendous attentions have been devoted to the use of first row-transition metals as most of those metals are naturally abundant, readily available, and inexpensive and have low toxicities in comparison with precious metals.In addition, the exploration of new catalytic systems might lead to the discovery of new mode of reactions.The aim of this review is to give an overview on recent advances in nickel-catalyzed direct functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds, without the discussion of the cleavage of acidic C-H bonds.Firstly, nickel-catalyzed functionalization of C(sp 2 )-H to form new C-C and C-heteroatom bonds is reviewed.Secondly, an overview of Ni-catalyzed C(sp 3 )-H functionalization is provided.In addition, mechanistic hypothesis and general aspects of these reactions have also been summarized.Finally, the limitations and perspectives on nickel-catalyzed C-H functionalization are discussed.

Abstract:N‐Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) catalysts have been employed as effective tools in the development of various reactions, which have made notable contributions in developing diverse reaction modes and generating significant functionalized molecules. This review provides an overview of the recent advancements in the chemo‐ and regioselective activation of different aldehydes using NHCs, categorized into five parts based on the different activation modes. A brief conclusion and outlook is provided to stimulate the development of novel activation modes for accessing functional molecules.

Abstract:The activation and functionalization of C-F bonds for the construction of C-C and C-X bonds have drawn significant research attention in recent years. However, the chemo-and stereoselective control of dual C-F bond functionalization of gem-difluoroalkenes remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a Ni-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling of gem-difluoroalkenes with alkenyl-electrophiles and D2O that allowed the generation of C(sp2)-C(sp2) bonds and C(sp2)-D bonds in one pot by successive defluorination is described. This methodology offers facile access to various deuterated 1,3-dienes with broad functional group compatibility and (E)-selectivity under mild conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that alpha-alkenyl-substituted monofluoroalkenes might be intermediates in this protocol.

Abstract:Functionalization of C-H bonds has emerged as a powerful strategy for converting inert, nonfunctional C-H bonds into their reactive counterparts. A wide range of C-H bond functionalization reactions has become possible by the catalysis of metals, typically from the second row of transition metals. First-row transition metals can also catalyze C-H functionalization, and they have the merits of greater earth-abundance, lower cost and better environmental friendliness in comparison to their second-row counterparts. C-H bond alkylation is a particularly important C-H functionalization reaction due to its chemical significance and its applications in natural product synthesis. This review covers Ni-catalyzed C-H bond alkylation reactions using alkyl halides and olefins as alkyl sources.
