Abstract:Using O2 as an oxidant, developing a non-noble metal catalyst for the selective catalytic C-H bond oxidation of pchlorotoluene is desirable and challenging. In this work, a series of Co, Cr co-doped OMS-2 (Octahedral Molecular Sieve-2) catalysts were prepared by a conventional refluxing method. It was found that the incorporation of Co and Cr improved the catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of p-chlorotoluene to p-chlorobenzaldehyde. Among these catalysts, CoCr/OMS-2 (Co: Cr = 1: 1, mass ratio), the best catalyst, shows that the conversion and the selectivity of p-chlorobenzaldehyde is 94.8 % and 94.3 %, respectively. The enhanced catalytic activity was due to the larger specific surface area and even dispersion of active components. The characterization results also disclosed that the co-doping of Co and Cr increased the oxygen vacancy and enhanced the ability to activate the surface lattice oxygen. Additionally, density functional theory calculations demonstrated that co-doping of Co and Cr promoted the adsorption of p-chlorotoluene and O2, and decreased the energy barrier of rate-determining step (the conversion of p-chlorobenzyl alcohol to p-chlorobenzaldehyde). Besides, when H2O was added to the reaction system as the second solvent, the activation and dissociation of O2, and the formation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde were facilitated, in agreement with the experimental results. This work demonstrated the promotional effect of Co, Cr co-doped into OMS-2 catalyst and the role of H2O for the selective oxidation of p-chlorotoluene.

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, developing robust catalysts and preventing the metal leaching during the reactions still remain challenging. Herein, a porous honeycomb-like nanostructure with bimetallic Ce–Cr oxide supported on N-doped carbon was prepared via a facile in-situ pyrolysis method. The prepared catalyst was highly active, selective, and stable in the transformation of cyclohexane to KA oil with H2O2 as the oxidant. The N-doped carbon served as an excellent support for the metal nanoparticles and greatly promoted their dispersion, and displayed a comparable or superior catalytic activity compared to the other traditional supports. It was found that the pyridinic N and pyrrolic N species of N-doped carbon were the main active sites for the metal immobilization, and the strong electronic interaction between N-doped carbon and Ce–Cr oxide was formed. The results revealed that the increased low-valence metal species might be responsible for the improved catalytic activity, and EPR analysis indicated that the hydroxyl radicals played a crucial role during the oxidation process. Besides, the catalyst can be easily separated and still remained stable after recycling seven times, making it a promising candidate for the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane to KA oil under mild conditions.
Low temperature catalytic combustion of chlorobenzene over cobalt based mixed oxides derived from layered double hydroxides

Abstract:Cobalt based mixed oxides were synthesized by a thermal treatment of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with molar ratio of Co/M = 3 (M = Al, Fe, Cr) and characterized by various techniques such as XRD, N2 sorption, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, NH3-TPD-MS and so on. The results indicated that the mixed oxides derived from LDHs possessed high specific surface area and uniform morphology. Meanwhile, the elements in the mixed oxides were homogenously dispersed. The addition of a second metal (Al, Fe or Cr) enhanced not only the acidity but also the basicity, moreover, Fe and Cr notably improved the reducibility at low temperature and the oxygen mobility of pristine Co3O4. The results of chlorobenzene catalytic combustion showed the addition of Cr or Fe promoted the apparent activity of pristine Co3O4 at low temperature and suppressed the formation of polychlorinated by-products. Among mixed oxides, CoCr catalyst possessed the highest activity and more obvious inhibition of dichlorobenzene formation, which was ascribed to its high redox ability, superior acidity and rapid removal of adsorbed inorganic chlorine species in the form of Cl2. In addition, the CoCr catalyst showed high catalytic stability.

Abstract:The development of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts that can realize the aerobic oxidation of C–H bonds at low temperature is a profound challenge in the catalysis community. Here we report the synthesis of a mesoporous Mn 0.5 Ce 0.5 O x solid solution that is highly active for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons under mild conditions (100–120 °C). Notably, the catalytic performance achieved in the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol (100 °C, conversion: 17.7%) is superior to those by the state-of-art commercial catalysts (140–160 °C, conversion: 3-5%). The high activity can be attributed to the formation of a Mn 0.5 Ce 0.5 O x solid solution with an ultrahigh manganese doping concentration in the CeO 2 cubic fluorite lattice, leading to maximum active surface oxygens for the activation of C–H bonds and highly reducible Mn 4+ ions for the rapid migration of oxygen vacancies from the bulk to the surface.
Boosting Chlorobenzene Oxidation over MIL-101(Cr) Derived CrOx Catalysts: the Stepwise Regulation of CrOx Clusters and Oxygen Species by Calcination Atmospheres

Abstract:In this work, CrOx catalysts derived from MIL-101(Cr) were prepared for the oxidation of chlorobenzene (CB). The atmosphere of calcination had great effect on the physical and chemical properties of the catalysts. Only the atmosphere of Ar could carbonize and preserve the organic ligands in the structure, retaining the micropore structure and high surface area of MIL-101(Cr). Therefore, the aggregation of CrOx clusters was prevented, forming abundant coordinative unsaturated Cr3+ and oxygen vacancies. They would transform to abundant Cr6+ as the active sites in the treatment of 10%O2/Ar, and acid sites composed with OH and surface adsorbed oxygen were formed around Cr6+, which played an important role on the adsorption/activation of CB and the oxidation of the intermediates. Through the oxygen vacancies, the surface lattice oxygen could migrate and replenish the oxygen consumed around Cr6+. Thus, MIL-101(Cr)-Ar-T, synthesized by MIL-101(Cr) stepwise calcined in Ar and treatment of 10%O2/Ar, exhibited the highest catalytic activity for CB oxidation with the T90 at 233°C, and the selectivity to COx and HCl at 240°C could reach 95.85% and 97.61%, respectively, with a high stable performance in the 5-day catalytic activity test.

Abstract:The development of economical catalysts that exhibit both high activity and durability for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) elimination remains a challenge. The oxidizing and acidic sites play a crucial role in the oxidation process of CVOCs; herein, praseodymium (Pr) was introduced into CrOx catalysts via in situ pyrolysis of MIL-101(Cr). With the decomposition of the ligand, a mixed micro-mesoporous structure was formed within the M-Cr catalyst, thereby reducing the contact resistance between catalyst active sites and the 1,2-dichloroethane molecule. Moreover, the synergistic interaction between chromium and praseodymium facilitates Oβ species and acidic sites, significantly enhancing the low-temperature catalytic performance and durability of the M-PrCr catalyst for 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) oxidation. The M-30PrCr catalyst possess enhanced active oxygen sites and acid sites, thereby exhibiting the highest catalytic activity and stability. This study may provide a novel and promising strategy for practical applications in the elimination of 1,2-DCE.
Metal-Site Dispersed Zinc-Chromium Oxide Derived from Chromate-Intercalated Layered Hydroxide for Highly Selective Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a crucial approach for propylene production. However, commonly used CrOx-based catalysts have issues including easy sintering at elevated reaction temperatures and relying on high acidity supports. In this work, we develop a strategy, to strongly anchor and isolate active sites against their commonly observed aggregation during reactions, by taking advantage of the net trap effect in chromate intercalated Zn-Cr layered hydroxides as precursors. Furthermore, the intercalated chromate overcomes the collapse of traditional layered hydroxides during their transformation to metal oxide, thus exposing more available active sites. A joint fine modulation including crystal structure, surface acidity, specific surface area, and active sites dispersion is performed on the final mixed metal oxides for propane dehydrogenation. As a result, Zn1Cr2-CrO42--MMO delivers attractive propane conversion (~27%) and propylene selectivity (>90%) as compared to other non-noble-metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:A core?shell catalyst which consists of a Co3O4 core and ZSM-5 shell, was prepared by microwave hydrothermal method and subjected for dichloromethane (DCM) oxidation. Chromium, cerium, niobium, and manganese species were separately introduced into the core-shell catalyst using the wet precipitation method and denoted as M-Co@Z (M = Cr, Ce, Nb, Mn). The catalytic activity of the Cr-Co@Z catalyst was significantly increased due to the interaction between Cr2O3 and Co3O4. The results of Raman spectra indicated the incorporation of chromium into the Co3O4 lattice and revealed the existence of the interaction between Cr2O3 and Co3O4. The synergistic effect between Cr2O3 and Co3O4 might be conducive to the generation of highly defective structure and increase the ratio of Co3+/Co2+ of the sample, leading to its better oxygen mobility. The dechlorination ability of CrCo@Z was also promoted due to the enhanced mobility of lattice oxygen. Based on in situ DRIFT studies, a possible reaction route of CH2Cl2 oxidation over Cr-Co@Z catalyst was proposed.
Core-shell CoCuOx@MOx (M Nb, Ti and Ce) catalysts with outstanding durability and resistance to H2O for the catalytic combustion of o-dichlorobenzene

Abstract:Configuring Co-based catalysts with excellent activity, durability, anti-H2O capability and superior chlorine resistance is an effective strategy for catalytic combustion of CVOCs. In this work, we elaborated a CoCuOx catalysts with the same core but different shell. The CoCuOx dodecahedron surface was successfully coated with shells of Nb2O5, TiO2, and CeO2 using a range of conventional synthesis methods. The prepared core-shell catalysts (CoCuOx@TiO2 and CoCuOx@Nb2O5) were found to generate plentiful acid sites and abundant lattice oxygen species, indicating a strong interaction between the core and shell layers that resulted in a significant enhancement of catalytic activity. Additionally, by-products generation was successfully controlled by acid sites and lattice oxygen species. More importantly, the core-shell structure design significantly improved the thermal stability and anti-H2O capability of the catalysts. Furthermore, the possible formation pathways and reaction mechanisms were proposed based on in-situ FTIR and selectivity analysis.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized novel three-dimensional (3D) cross-flowered Co-Ni metal–organic framework (Co-Ni-MOF) precursors using the chemical precipitation method. Subsequently, we obtained Co-Ni-Fe layered double hydroxides (Co-Ni-Fe-LDHs) through an ion exchange strategy, which preserved their original morphology while consisting of ultrathin layered hydroxide nanosheets. The interlayer spacing of the LDH lamellar structure was finely tuned by varying the ratios of Co to Ni. The results demonstrated that Co-Ni-Fe LDHs, characterized by a unique three-dimensional cross-shaped structure and an optimal composition ratio of Co 2+ :Ni 2+ = 2:1, exhibited increased interlayer spacing. This structural characteristic contributed to their excellent electrochemical performance, positioning them as optimal electrode materials for catalytic oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Our observations revealed that Co-Ni-Fe-LDHs exhibited remarkable OER activity, characterized by a low Tafel slope of 41.82 mV dec −1 , a low overpotential of 322 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and outstanding stability over a 48-hour period. In-situ Raman spectroscopy results indicated that the active site of the composite was γ-CoOOH. Additionally, the room temperature stirring and standing strategy employed in this study is easier to scale up and yields a higher quantity of reaction products compared to traditional high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. This investigation provides novel insights into the design and fabrication of Co-Ni-Fe-LDHs catalyst with 3D cross-flower structures, demonstrating enhanced electrocatalytic activity and commendable stability. These findings suggest promising applications in the field of electrolyzed water.

Abstract:A series of porous CeO2–CrOx mixed oxides are synthesized using different precipitants (NaOH, NH4OH, (NH4)2CO3 and urea) and evaluated for deep oxidation of various chlorinated VOCs (CH2Cl2, C2HCl3, C2H4Cl2 and C6H5Cl). The results show that all these materials represent porous structures and small particle sizes (2–8nm). Part of Cr element can go into the lattice of CeO2, resulting in the formation of Ce–Cr–O mixed oxide. Compared with pure CeO2 and Cr2O3, the amount of Cr6+ species and oxygen vacancies in CeO2–CrOx mixed oxides are significantly increased, due to the strong interaction between CeO2 and CrOx. Thus, all the CeO2–CrOx mixed oxides exhibit high catalytic activity and good durability for deep oxidation of chlorinated VOCs, especially the CeO2–CrOx prepared using (NH4)2CO3 as precipitant. Moreover, only slight chlorinated byproducts are detected in the process of chlorinated VOCs oxidation, and the surface accumulation of coke and Cl species as well as the loss of Cr element is slight during the long-term reaction at 265°C, indicating that these CeO2–CrOx materials possess interesting fundamental result, deserving more research before conclusion on practical value.
Insights into the catalytic performance of LDHs-derived CoAlO oxides with different anions intercalation for propane total oxidation

Abstract:Constructing effective and stable non-noble metal catalysts is of great significance and prospect for catalytic oxidation of stable light alkanes at low temperature. Herein, the CoAlO oxide catalysts derived from the CoAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with CO 3 2– , CH 3 COO – (Ac), SO 4 2- , NO 3 – and citrate (CA) anions were prepared, and their catalytic performances for propane oxidation were investigated. Among all CoAlO catalysts, the CoAlO-Ac-3 catalyst (CH 3 COO – anion intercalation) exhibited better catalytic activity for propane oxidation (T 90 = 300 °C), with the highest reaction rate (2.79 × 10 -7 mol g −1 s −1 ) and TOF value (0.13 × 10 -3 s −1 ) at 240 °C. Characterization results revealed that the interlayer anions affected the valence distribution of metals and surface active oxygen species, and CH 3 COO – anion intercalation CoAlO-Ac catalyst showed the highest Co 3+ /Co 2+ molar ratio and active oxygen species. Combining with Raman and in-situ DRIFTS results, the lattice distortion of catalyst caused by the interlayer anions promoted the migration of active oxygen species, thus accelerating the propane adsorption and activation. Meanwhile, CoAlO-Ac-3 catalyst exhibited excellent stability and water resistance for propane oxidation.

Abstract:Core-shell structured Co3O4@ZSM-5 catalysts were successfully synthesized by a simple two-step microwave hydrothermal method and used for the catalytic oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM). Co3O4@ZSM-5 catalysts exhibited better CO2 yield and lower byproduct yield than pristine Co3O4 and ZSM-5. For pure ZSM-5 and Co3O4, dechlorinated byproducts CH3Cl formed more readily over ZSM-5 due to its higher acidity and lower redox property, while polychlorinated byproducts (CHCl3 and CCl4) formed more readily over Co3O4 due to its lower acidity and higher redox property. Thanks to its core-shell structure, Co3O4@ZSM-5 exhibited appropriate redox ability and a suitable distribution of acid sites, possibly explaining its lower byproduct yields and more efficient formation and desorption of HCl and Cl2. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis indicated that formaldehyde, formate and methoxy species were the main intermediates of the catalytic oxidation reaction. A pathway for the catalytic oxidation of DCM on 1.5-Co3O4@ZSM-5 was proposed based on the DCM degradation performance and physicochemical property analysis. The addition of water vapor to the DCM degradation process on core-shell structure Co3O4@ZSM-5 was shown to promote DCM conversion and CO2 yield. In addition, we concluded that core-shell catalysts exhibited good thermal stability and durability for DCM oxidation.
Multi-metal composite layered materials derived from ZIF-67 for enhanced toluene oxidation

Abstract:Amidst the increasing concerns regarding the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the pressing task at hand is the development of effective and environmentally benign technologies for catalytic VOC reduction. In the context of this research endeavor, the distinct attributes of zeolite imidazoline framework (ZIF-67), known for its high yield, absence of deleterious by-products, and rapid synthesis, are harnessed. In pursuit of this goal, a series of ZIF-67-derived layered double oxides (LDO) multimetallic composite shell materials for toluene combustion were successfully synthesized: CoNi-LDO and CoNiM-LDO (M = Ce, Cu, Mn and Fe).The experimental results show that due to the uniform dispersion of Co, Ni, and Cu atoms within the CoNiCu-LDO catalyst, the prevalence of oxygen vacancies, a significant specific surface area, and robust interactions among these constituents, a synergistic formation involving O v - Cu 2+ - O 2 - Co 3+ - O 2 - Ni 3+ emerges, the CoNiCu-LDO exhibits an excellent catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, through Density Functional Theory (DFT), the adsorption energies and the projected density of states (PDOS) for toluene, O 2 , H 2 O, and SO 2 on the catalysts have been meticulously computed. Ultimately, the intricate mechanism underpinning the catalytic oxidation of toluene on CoNiCu-LDO has been unveiled through in situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS).

Abstract:A series of Cu n CoO x bimetallic oxides were synthesized by calcination of xCu/ZIF-67 precursors pre-impregnated with Cu 2+ . The Cu 7 CoO x catalyst demonstrated remarkable reactivity, reaching about 90 % conversion of toluene and ethylene at 194 °C and 162 °C. Additionally, Cu 7 CoO x was deemed suitable for applications at high space velocities, and also displaying superior stability. The physicochemical properties of Cu n CoO x were investigated by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, Raman, TG, O 2 -TPD, H 2 -TPR and XPS characterizations. The excellent catalytic performance of Cu 7 CoO x is attributed to the strong interaction of the two metal oxides, excellent redox ability, abundant lattice defects, more reactive oxygen species and higher concentrations of Co 2+ and O Latt species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed CuO/Co 3 O 4 (2 2 0) (E ads,O 2 = −0.92 eV, E ads,toluene = −1.52 eV) displayed lower adsorption energy for toluene and oxygen molecules than Co 3 O 4 (2 2 0) (E ads,O2 = −0.30 eV, E ads,toluene = −0.90 eV), which was favorable for the catalyst to catalyze the oxidation of VOCs. The possible degradation mechanism of toluene on Cu 7 CoO x was revealed using in situ DRIFTS. Thus, this work provides a non-noble metal catalyst with great application potential in VOCs treatment.

Hydrogen-controlled structural reconstruction of palladium-bismuth oxide cluster to single atom alloy for low-temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) has been widely regarded as a high-performance catalyst for various oxidative reactions, however, the actual structure of active site remains controversial due to structural evolution under operation conditions. Herein, we prepared a series of bismuth (Bi)-doped silica-supported Pd catalysts and found a hydrogen-controlled structural reconstruction mechanism of palladium-bismuth oxide cluster to single atom alloy to efficiently catalyze low-temperature CO oxidation. The formation of Pd x Bi y O z clusters with unique Pd−O−Bi coordination structure could enhance the sinter-resistance ability of Pd species. This structural evolution of active site is clearly uncovered by in-situ XAFS results, in which metallic Bi−Pd shell gradually generates as the increase of reduction temperature without any metallic Bi−Bi bond. More importantly, PdBi 1 single atom alloy exhibits a good CO oxidation activity with a CO 2 production rate of 413 μmol CO2 ·g Pd −1 ·s −1 at 100 °C and excellent catalytic stability. Density function calculation (DFT) results indicate that there are geometric and electronic effects between Bi and Pd atoms, which favor total linear-CO adsorption, activate CO and O 2 molecules, and reduce the barrier for the formation of OO-CO intermediates in PdBi 1 single atom alloy.

Abstract:Here, a metal–organic framework (MOF)-templated strategy was applied to synthesize the CoCeO x bimetallic catalysts by calcining Co partially-substituted Ce-UiO-66. It is indicated that the substituted Co limited Ce cations in Ce-UiO-66 framework, which affects its growth and structure crystallinity to some extent. After pyrolysis treatment, the derived bimetallic oxide (CoCeO x -M) can basically keep the octahedral structure and the surface area is much higher than the bulk metal composite oxide (CoCeO x -B) prepared by traditional coprecipitation. Results reveal that CoCeO x -M performs the best chlorobenzene degradation capacity, superior stability and vapor tolerance compared with those of CeO2-M (derived from Ce-UiO-66) and CoCeO x -B. At the same time, it is favorable to inhibit the formation of CO during the oxidation reaction. The superior catalytic performance of CoCeO x -M is attributed to a good dispersion of metal cations, high surface area and active oxygen concentration, and good redox property. Moreover, the formation of organic byproducts especially chlorinated organics can be obviously prohibited over CoCeO x -M compared with that of CeO2-M. Mechanism study reveals that chlorobenzene dissociates on the surface of CoCeO x -M to form carboxylates such as acetate species, maleate and phenolate before finally oxidized into CO2, H2O, and HCl. The present work poses new insights into the fabrication of efficient catalysts for industrial CVOC purification.
