Abstract:CuFeO2, the structure prototype of the delafossite family, has received renewed interest in recent years. Thermodynamic modeling and several experimental Cu-Fe-O system investigations did not focus specifically on the possible nonstoichiometry of this compound, which is, nevertheless, a very important optimization factor for its physicochemical properties. In this work, through a complete set of analytical and thermostructural techniques from 50 to 1100 °C, a fine reinvestigation of some specific regions of the Cu-Fe-O phase diagram under air was carried out to clarify discrepancies concerning the delafossite CuFeO2 stability region as well as the eutectic composition and temperature for the reaction L = CuFeO2 + Cu2O. Differential thermal analysis and Tammann's triangle method were used to measure the liquidus temperature at 1050 ± 2 °C with a eutectic composition at Fe/(Cu + Fe) = 0.105 mol %. The quantification of all of the present phases during heating and cooling using Rietveld refinement of the high-temperature X-ray diffraction patterns coupled with thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses revealed the mechanism of formation of delafossite CuFeO2 from stable CuO and spinel phases at 1022 ± 2 °C and its incongruent decomposition into liquid and spinel phases at 1070 ± 2 °C. For the first time, a cationic off-stoichiometry of cuprous ferrite CuFe1- yO2-δ was unambiguous, as evidenced by two independent sets of experiments: (1) Electron probe microanalysis evidenced homogeneous micronic CuFe1- yO2-δ areas with a maximum y value of 0.12 [i.e., Fe/(Cu + Fe) = 0.47] on Cu/Fe gradient generated by diffusion from a perfect spark plasma sintering pristine interface. Micro-Raman provided structural proof of the existence of the delafossite structure in these areas. (2) Standard Cu additions from the stoichiometric compound CuFeO2 coupled with high-temperature X-ray diffraction corroborated the possibility of obtaining a pure Cu-excess delafossite phase with y = 0.12. No evidence of an Fe-rich delafossite was found, and complementary analysis under a neutral atmosphere shows narrow lattice parameter variation with an increase of Cu in the delafossite structure. The consistent new data set is summarized in an updated experimental Cu-Fe-O phase diagram. These results provide an improved understanding of the stability region and possible nonstoichiometry value of the CuFe1- yO2-δ delafossite in the Cu-Fe-O phase diagram, enabling its optimization for specific applications.

Abstract:By using the low temperature x-ray diffraction (LTXD) we investigated several phase transitions which accompany with the crystal distortion. In our present report we will mainly discuss the integrated intensity (I.I.) of the x-ray spectrum. The temperature dependence of I.I. can be expressed by the Debye-Waller factor. As a precursor effect of the crystal phase transition, the softening of the lattice occurs. Due to the softening of the lattice, the I.I. drastically decreases down to the crystal phase transition temperature. We observed this effect in many materials. Here we will show some of them, iron pnictide superconductor SmFe0.925Co0.075AsO, and magnetic ordering compounds PrCu4Ag and Nd2Ti2O7.

Abstract:The influence of Fe content on the structural and optoelectronic properties of Fe-doped CuAlO2 films was studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that all annealed films had a pure delafossite phase. Optical transmittance spectra showed that Fe-doped films exhibit an obvious change in the 340-380 nm region compared to undoped CuAlO2, and optical band gap analyses confirmed the formation of impurity band levels within the bandgap. The average transmittance of CuAl1-xFexO2 is around 45-55% in the visible range, and transmittance in this region decreases with increasing Fe concentration. Increased conductivity was observed due to the introduction of Fe and subsequent carrier concentration enhancement. The conductivity in a CuAl0.85Fe0.15O2 film was maximized at 1.10 x 10(-2) S cm(-1).

Abstract:The powder specimen of CuFeO2 delafossite was synthesized by a hydrothermal method at 453 K. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that the obtained pure delafossite phase was a mixture of the 3R and 2H polytypes, predominantly the former. Mössbauer spectral analysis revealed the paramagnetic state of the copper ferrite at room temperature. Below 12 K the spectra had complicated shapes of Zeeman sextets. Changes in the character of the hyperfine interactions did not correspond to the data reported for the single-crystal CuFeO2. Magnetization measurements revealed that magnetic transition occurred at Néel temperature (TN) = 12.5 K.

Abstract:A series of LaBa 2 Cu 3-x Fe x O y (LBCO) samples with 0.0≤x≤0.75 have been synthesized. As the iron content increases, the ferric ion prefers to occupy Cu(2) sites instead of Cu(l), and T c of LBCO decreases more rapidly than that of YBCO. This means that the action of Cu(2) on superconductivity is greater than that of Cu(l). Crystal structures of the series show an anomalous structural phase transition depending on Fe contents. As the Fe content increases, the structure changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal, and then the orthorhombic phase is regenerated from the tetragonal phase. By least squares fitting with the X-ray diffraction data, the structural transitions can be determined from the changes of the cell parameters a and b . The relation of the lattice parameters a, b , and c as a function of both the Fe content and the oxygen content y supports the fact that the excess oxygens may occupy the (0 0 1/2) and (0 1/2 0) sites of the crystal cell.

Abstract:LiCu_2O_2 single crystals were studied in the temperature range 300-1100 K by means of heating-cooling curves of differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray powder diffraction and electrical measurements. A reversible first-order phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was found to take place at 993 K. At the transition, a peak is observed in the DTA curves, as well as jumps of the unit cell parameters and electrical resistivity. Considering the crystal structure of LiCu_2O_2 and the entropy change associated with the phase transition, it is concluded that the phase transition is related to processes of order-disorder of the Cu2+ and Li+ cations onto their crystallographic positions.

Abstract:We use neutron scattering to study the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the iron pnictides CeFeAsO1-xFx as the system is tuned from a semimetal to a high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductor through Fluorine (F) doping x. In the undoped state, CeFeAsO develops a structural lattice distortion followed by a stripe like commensurate antiferromagnetic order with decreasing temperature. With increasing Fluorine doping, the structural phase transition decreases gradually while the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed before the appearance of superconductivity, resulting an electronic phase diagram remarkably similar to that of the high-Tc copper oxides. Comparison of the structural evolution of CeFeAsO1-xFx with other Fe-based superconductors reveals that the effective electronic band width decreases systematically for materials with higher Tc. The results suggest that electron correlation effects are important for the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in these Fe pnictides.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of the low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO)-high-temperature tetragonal (HTT) structural phase transition in 1% iron-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) (x = 0.2). The superlattice (032) peak intensity and the width are investigated in detail for a wide temperature range. We found that the structural phase transition is not sharp and the tilt ordering of the CuO(6) octahedra persists above the transition temperature T(S) (≈77 K). Even at room temperature, the superlattice peak is still observable. The structural phase transition is identified as an order-disorder type phase transition. We found that the tilt ordering in our iron-doped material is always short-ranged, and in the HTT phase the correlation between the tilts along the b axis is better preserved than that along the a axis. Moreover, we identify the role of the Fe as the nucleation centers of the LTO domains in the structural phase transition.

Abstract:Delafossite CuFeO2 is a p-type oxide semiconductor with a band gap of ∼1.5 eV, which has attracted great interests for applications in solar energy harvesting and oxide electronics. However, there are still some discrepancies in the literature regarding its fundamental electronic structure and transport properties. In this paper, we use a synergistic combination of resonant photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to directly study the electronic structure of well-defined CuFeO2 epitaxial thin films. Our detailed study reveals that CuFeO2 has an indirect and d–d forbidden band gap of 1.5 eV. The top of the valence band (VB) of CuFeO2 mainly consists of occupied Fe 3d states hybridized with Cu 3d and O 2p, and the bottom of the conduction band (CB) is primarily made up of unoccupied Fe 3d states. The localized nature of the Fe 3d states at both CB and VB edges would limit the carrier mobility and the dynamics of photoexcited carriers. In addition, Mg doping at Fe sites in CuFeO2 increases the hole carrier concentration and leads to a gradual shift of the Fermi level toward the VB. Abstract:Microstructures, defect characteristics, optoelectmnic, and magnetic properties of polycrystalline delafossite Ca1-xCaxFeO2 (x = 0.00-0.08) samples have been systemically investigated. Our investigation results distinctly show that divalent Ca2+ ions can successfully substitute partial Cu+ ions and prompt the grain size and induce the partial Fe3+ valence variation to Fe2+. The positron annihilation lifetime spectra signifies that the cation vacancy clusters exist in all samples, the size and concentration of vacancy defects are redistributed with increasing Ca2+ ions content, while the overall defect environment of CuFeO2 system is not changed. The Hall-effect measurement results indicate the transition of semiconductor type from p-type to n-type. The UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy results indicate that the calculated band gap of the prepared samples is estimated to be 3.42-3.58 eV, indicating the series can be applied to the transparent conductive oxide materials. The magnetic measurements reveal that the transition temperature T-N1 and T-N2 are independent of Ca2+ content x, while the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism for all the doped samples are observed. A moderate Ca2+ content, i.e. x = 0.02, can distinctly promote weak ferromagnetism. The above internal mechanism is probably relevant to the evolution of lattice structure and defect characteristics caused by Ca2+ ions doping.

Abstract:The intrinsic ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity (κL) of high performance thermoelectric Cu2S may arise from its multiform complex crystal structures while the further sharp drop of κL observed at elevating temperatures close to the phase transition to hexagonal high-chalcocite is of considerable interest. In this work, in-depth in-situ transmission electron microscopy investigations have been performed by either heating or electron irradiation to analyze the structural evolution of Cu2S. Multiple including new phase structures have been observed in Cu2S. Upon increasing the temperature, drastic structural changes took place including phase transition among different phases, formation of an intermediate phase, switching of crystal orientation and inverse phase transitions, which indicate multiple forms of Cu ordering with high temperature-sensitivity. Such tremendous structural evolution along with formation and movement of phase boundaries are believed to strongly scatter the phonons.

Abstract:Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanofibers were fabricated using the electro-spinning technique and followed by an annealing process in air. The crystalline structure and morphology of the nano-fibers were studied using XRD, SEM, Raman spectra and high-resolution TEM. Zero-field-cooled (ZFC), field-cooling (FC) and field heated (FH) type temperature dependence of magnetization curves of alpha-Fe2O3 nanofibers are measured in the temperature range 15-390 K. Two kinds of magnetization steps were observed in the temperature dependence of magnetization curves, one is at 300 k which is very weak and the other is in the temperature range of 245-257 K with large thermal hysteresis (12 K). The tiny step at 300 K can be attributed to normal Morin transition in alpha-Fe2O3 and this was suppressed by the consequent alpha- to beta- phase transition, which caused the pronounced step in the temperature dependence of magnetization curves. This alpha- to beta- phase transition in Fe2O3 nanofibers was further confirmed by in situ TEM observations. This is the first study to describe novel alpha- to beta-phase transition upon cooling.

Abstract:Delafossites are promising candidates for photocatalysis applications because of their chemical stability and absorption in the solar region of the electromagnetic spectrum. For example, CuAlO2 has good chemical stability but has a large indirect bandgap (~3 eV), so that efforts to improve its absorption in the solar region through alloying are investigated. The effect of dilute alloying on the optical absorption of powdered CuAl1-xFexO2 (x = 0.0-1.0) is measured and compared to electronic band structures calculations using a generalized gradient approximation with Hubbard exchange-correlation parameter and spin. A new absorption feature is observed at 1.8 eV for x = 0.01, which redshifts to 1.4 eV for x = 0.10. This feature is associated with transitions from the L-point valence band maximum to the Fe-3d state that appears below the conduction band of the spin-down band structure. The feature increases the optical absorption below the bandgap of pure CuAlO2, making dilute CuAl1-xFexO2 alloys better suited for solar photocatalysis.

Abstract:Microstructural properties, phase transitions, and charge ordering of LuFe2O4 have been extensively investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in a large temperature range from 20 to 550 K. The experimental results demonstrate that the LuFe2O4 crystal is commonly modulated by charge ordering (CO), which is often recognizable by superstructure reflections. The (001) twinning domains as a common defect often appear in the LuFe2O4 crystals along the c-axis direction, with the crystals across each (001) boundary rotated by 180 degrees with respect to one another. The in situ cooling TEM observations from 300 K down to 20 K reveal remarkable alternations of the superstructures, suggesting a complex CO process in the present system. Careful analysis shows that the CO in the frustrated ground state is characterized by a modulation with a wave vector of q(1)=(1/3 1/3 2). In situ heating TEM observations from 300 to 550 K clearly reveal that the CO modulation in LuFe2O4 becomes invisible above a critical temperature of about T-C=530 K. These facts suggest that the CO should be the essential driving force for the structural transitions and ferroelectricity observed in this kind of layered material. Experimental measurements on the ferroelectricity show that the LuFe2O4 material, in general, has a large dielectric constant of about 10 000 at room temperature. In order to understand the properties of low-temperature phase transitions, the magnetization and specific heat from 300 to 4 K have been briefly discussed.
Temperature-Induced Hexagonal-Orthorhombic Phase Transition in Lutetium Ferrite Nanoparticles

Abstract:The X-ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopies and magnetic measurements were used to explore the correlated changes of the structure, lattice dynamics and magnetic properties of the LuFeO3 nanoparticles, which appear in dependence on their sintering temperature. We revealed a gradual substitution of the hexagonal phase by the orthorhombic phase in the nanoparticles, which sintering temperature increases from 700 C to 1100 C. The origin and stability of the hexagonal phase in the LuFeO3 nanoparticles is of the special interest, because the nanoparticle in the phase can be a room-temperature multiferroic with a weak ferromagnetic and pronounced structural and ferroelectric long-range ordering, while the antiferromagnetic and nonpolar orthorhombic phase is more stable in the bulk LuFeO3. To define the ranges of the hexagonal phase stability, we determine the bulk and interface energy densities of different phases from the comparison of the Gibbs model with experimental results. Using the Gibbs model parameters, we predict the influence of size effects and temperature on the structural and polar properties of the LuFeO3 nanoparticles. Analysis of the obtained results shows that the combination of the X-ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and theoretical modelling of structural and polar properties allows to establish the interplay between the phase composition, lattice dynamics and multiferroic properties of the LuFeO3 nanoparticles prepared in different conditions.

Abstract:In order to study the relationship between local lattice distortion and superconductivity, we performed temperature dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) on Sr2CuO3+delta powder sample (single phase with T-c = 48 K). The temperature dependent Debye-Waller factor of Cu-O pair appears an anomalous upturn at 90 K and becomes drop around the superconducting transition temperature of similar to 50 K. It means that local lattice distortion appears at 90 K. Furthermore, the analysis of temperature dependent X ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) shows that the R factor, which denotes the inhomogeneous charge density distribution, shows a sharp drop at 90 K. According to previous reports on other doped 214 cuprates, the above experimental results reveal that the local lattice distortion at Cu site in CuO2 plane occurs with the inhomogeneous charge density distribution at 90 K. It indicates that the inhomogeneous charge density distribution may be caused by the local lattice distortion at Cu site before superconductive order formation, implying that electron-lattice interaction play a key role in superconductivity of Sr2CuO3+delta.
